Eastside Culture Crawl Program 2024

Page 1

The Eastside Arts Society (EAS) operates on the traditional, unceded ancestral territories of the x wməθk wəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwwú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

The EAS is grateful to gather on these lands and waters, and we work from a place of respect and responsibility to this gift.

“Art at its most significant is a Distant Early Warning System that can always be relied on to tell the old culture what is beginning to happen to it.”

Welcome to the 28th edition of the Culture Crawl Visual Art, Design and Craft Festival! Time flies so quickly from year-to-year and it’s always exciting when we hit the first week of September and we hit the ground running with this years’ preparations. Planning did start earlier in the year, but this is the time when artists start to really consider what they will exhibit at this year’s Crawl. It is an exciting time as we start to see the new artwork being presented and also the 92 new artists submitting to their first ever Crawl. It's heartwarming to see so many artists committed to the success of this event. We are equally enthusiastic to see them back.

For those new to the Culture Crawl, we continue to provide several events leading up to the Crawl, including curated exhibits at the Pendulum Gallery, the CULTCH, Alternative Creations Gallery, and the Charles Clark Gallery at Strange Fellows Brewing; Talking Art featuring artists discussing their work; and, Moving Art which presents video/film artists in the Eastside Arts District. These events further deepen the connection between the artists and you, the public, and we hope illuminate on how artists create their amazing work.

I am passionate about the Culture Crawl Festival and dedicated not only to showcasing diverse artistic talent but also committed to making the arts accessible and engaging for everyone. By showcasing both established and emerging artists, the festival not only highlights local talent but also encourages new dialogues and collaborations. I strongly believe that the arts as a means of bridging cultures and disciplines reflects a deep understanding of their power to connect people and broaden perspectives. The Culture Crawl is a fantastic platform for nurturing artistic growth and community engagement.

My role as Artistic & Executive Director allows me to foster connections between artists and audiences, facilitating a richer, more inclusive cultural experience. I believe the

arts should be accessible to everyone, so the Crawl offers a variety of no-cost, engaging and vibrant arts programming opportunities for people of all ages.

Behind the scenes, we have been working on launching the Eastside Arts District (EAD). There is tremendous support from all levels of government, and a great deal of enthusiasm and momentum from the community to advance this initiative. I remain convinced the EAD will further the goals we have for artist space retention and development; for increasing awareness of the arts; and for providing the public with a unique experience and engagement with the arts.

Special thanks to our incredibly hard-working team, Erin, Kris, Sierra, and Steph. Huge thanks to members of our Spaces and Development committees and our committed Board of Directors, who contribute greatly to advancing our vision and our programs and initiatives. I am truly grateful for your support.

Last but not least, a huge thank you to all of the artists who continue to be creative regardless of the many and varied challenges they are confronted with. It is a privilege and inspiring to work with you.

Enjoy and help us celebrate our 28th year!

ART HAPPENS HERE!

ART IS FOR EVERY WELCOME!

Welcome to the 28th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl Festival

On behalf of the Eastside Arts Society, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 28th annual Eastside Culture Crawl Festival!

As you explore the studios, galleries, and local businesses, we hope you’ll be energized and inspired by the remarkable range of artwork on display. Your participation helps support artists and strengthens the cultural economy of the Eastside Arts District.

This festival would not be possible without the incredible support of the artists, members, partners, and community. Together, you all contribute to making art happen here in the Eastside Arts District.

Green 2024 Exhibit

Opening Reception November 7 th Runs to November 29th

We are thrilled to be presenting once again, a multi-venue, salon-style curated exhibition at the Cultch, Alternative Creations Gallery, Strange Fellows Gallery, and the Pendulum Gallery. The exhibition will feature 90+ Eastside Arts District artists and a variety of mediums include painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture.

The theme of this year's juried Crawl exhibition is “Green”. We looked for works that interpret this wide-reaching word. The exhibition gives artists the opportunity to contemplate what "green" means to them, explore personal reactions, and look back on their history.

5 Senses, 4 Elements

11TH ANNUAL EASTSIDE CULTURE CRAWL

FILM AND VIDEO EXHIBITION

“The

earth has music for those who listen." Scott Cunningham

"5 Senses, 4 Elements" explores the profound relationship between our shared humanity and the four classical elements of Earth, Water, Fire and Air, inviting viewers to experience how contemporary artists reinterpret these fundamental aspects of existence through the lens of digital media — fostering a dialogue between nature, technology, and emotion. This year’s selections emphasize the dynamism with which we experience the world: the joy of water, the wonder of air, the fire in our bellies, and the ground that sustains us all. Concrete whispers, conservatories are written, webs are unraveled, and a serpent devours the moon. An equilibrium of elements connects us all.

The Eastside Arts Society’s ongoing commitment is to build and strengthen capacity for artists and arts organizations within the geographic region of Vancouver’s Eastside and to enhance and promote the connectivity of the arts with the public. Vancouver’s Eastside is home to the highest concentration of artists in any neighbourhood across Canada and the birthplace of the annual Eastside Culture Crawl , which this year celebrates its 28th anniversary. EAS has advanced the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in BC and provides artists, designers, craftspeople, and the public a forum for exchanging ideas. EAS strives to develop programming and initiatives that are open and inclusive to all artists, from emerging to established. It has done this by developing one of the first visual art, design and craft festivals, the Eastside Culture Crawl, and in doing so has been a groundbreaker for the visual arts to break away from traditional models governing the visual arts.

Following three incredible years of growing our new summertime art-making event, we were thrilled to welcome back the newly expanded Eastside Arts Festival. The addition of performing artists and pop-up arts workshops in breweries was a creative and engaging way to showcase the diverse talent

and vibrant arts community of Vancouver's Eastside. By embracing and celebrating this diversity through our festival programming, we are not only providing opportunities for artists and participants to engage with different art forms but also fostering a sense of community and connection within the Eastside Arts District. Events like ours play a crucial role in promoting cultural exchange, creativity, and inclusivity, enriching the social fabric of the community.

This year, EAS furthered the development of the soon to be launched Eastside Arts District (EAD) by building a pilot website; the first phase of many public engagement tools to educate and engage the community with the visual and performing artists, venues, arts organizations and events of Vancouver’s Eastside. Providing resources, opportunities, and platforms for artists to showcase their work not only empowers individual creatives but also enriches the cultural landscape of the Eastside.

Located in Vancouver’s Eastside, we anticipate the EAD to be: an inclusive and collaborative neighborhood, a hub of artistic creation, innovation, economic activity, production and presentation; a driver of affordable, accessible permanent infrastructure and facilities designed for arts and cultural activities; and, uniquely branded and promoted to reflect its diverse communities.

Celebrating the Arts of the Eastside Arts District

On June 19 th , 2024, the Onni Group and the Eastside Arts Society presented an evening of art, wine and canapés in celebration of the Arts in the Eastside Arts District. The event was held at David Robinson Studios in the iconic Parker Street Studios with special guest speaker, Dan Mangan, and arts supporters from across Vancouver. In addition to celebrating the Arts in the Eastside Arts District, the EAS was thrilled to kick off the 2nd annual Art raffle featuring stunning artwork by celebrated artists Ian Wallace, David Robinson, Richard Tetrault and Carla Tak. This event raised funds to support the Eastside Arts Society and our ongoing development of the Eastside Arts District to ensure that Art Happens Here for decades to come.

Art, Bike, Beer, Crawl Fundraiser 2024

Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Art, Bike, and Beer Crawl fundraiser in support of the Eastside Arts Society and its programming! We were thrilled to deliver this super fun event in conjunction with our 2024 Eastside Arts Festival. Attendees were treated to a walk or bike tour of 3 of 10 participating breweries for tastings and art. The event capped off at the Eastside Arts Festival site where participants enjoyed a pint from our festival beverage hosts, Strange Fellows Brewing, as well the opportunity to explore the festival’s Art Zone to engage with our public art, art demo exhibits, our art shop and take in live music on our festival stage. New this year, our first ever Balloon Pop offered attendees a chance to win some amazing prizing from our community partners!

The Art, Bike, and Beer Crawl fundraiser helps support the Eastside Arts Society’s initiatives promoting local arts and culture through community engagement. The Art, Bike Beer Crawl pairs two of the best things about our neighbourhood - art and beer - in a fabulously fun event that connects Eastside art with beer lovers in our community!

Studio 101

Studio 101 is an Eastside Arts Society program dedicated to supporting diverse and engaging artistic experiences for East Vancouver’s youth.

Many Eastside schools have limited exposure to professional artists and arts experiences beyond the classroom. Studio 101 brings school children into participating Eastside Culture Crawl artist studio spaces for free, hands-on workshops. For many participants, it is their first time connecting with professional artists. The program provides students insights into the various phases of the creative process, while promoting creative confidence and fostering an appreciation of the visual arts. This year, over 200 youth from Xpey Elementary, Seymour Elementary, Britannia Elementary and Strathcona Elementary schools will be participating in Studio 101. New this year, we are expanding Studio 101’s program at Xpey to a week-long residency connecting students with Indigenous artist Jay Groening for a series of art workshops.

The program was conceived in 2007 and is proudly supported by the Eastside Arts Society, Opus Art Supplies and Yolks, and made possible by the generous support of Francis Caprani, Franco Ferrari and Gallery 881.

Take Flight Benefit 2024

October 8th – November 8th

In celebration of 28 years of Vancouver’s beloved art festival, the Eastside Arts Society will be holding Take Flight – a festival launch benefit for the 2024 Culture Crawl festival featuring an online silent auction, and the return of our wildly popular Art Roulette draw!

By making this benefit a success, our audiences galvanized EAS’s work in making the Eastside Arts District the vibrant neighbourhood we know and love – and will ensure we can continue to bring our community together through accessible art for decades to come. ART IS FOR EVERYONE!

In Memorium

Derek John Simons

Derek was born in Montreal and graduated with a BDFA at Concordia where the painter Molinari foundationally impacted his work and thought. In 1981, he made his way to the Westcoast where he launched his MA at SFU in Communications. It was there he met Ann and in 1995 his daughter Fiona appeared. Derek ran the Basic Inquiry life-drawing classes for 6 years and went on to curate with Richard Pinet “The Body Project “and The “Spectacular State “which garnered international attention. In 1995 he became the founding Director of the Roundhouse Arts & Recreation Centre and in 2000 began work on his PHD at SFU which was completed in 2010. In 2016, as he approached retirement, Derek reconnected with his art. As a key contributing member of the arts community, he will be greatly missed.

Jay Hamburger

Jay Hamburger was a poet, radio host, and theatre director born in New York City in 1947. At the age of 20, Jay wrote the lyrics for the song By My Side in the hit musical Godspell. He spent the next two decades writing poetry and touring with various theatre troupes across the United States. By the early 90s, Jay had relocated to East Vancouver where he founded Theatre in the Raw. The communityfocused theatre’s motto was “Giving Exposure to Voices Seldom Heard”—an ethos that defined Jay’s creative work. As artistic director, Jay staged 17 mainstage plays and over 180 original one-acts. His productions ranged from new and untold stories about Vancouver to classics such as Waiting for Godot and The Threepenny Opera. Alongside the theatre, Jay was a community drama teacher and a long-time host for Vancouver Co-op Radio. Over thirty years, he aired hundreds of unique interviews and radio plays that celebrated the diversity and strength of his community on Vancouver’s east side.

Art is for Everyone

Now in our 28t h year, the Culture Crawl has grown from a community of 45 artists, to an annual visual arts festival that directly connects thousands of art lovers such as yourself with hundreds of artists, craftspeople, and designers.

2023 was a productive year for the Eastside Arts Society (EAS), made possible in part by the support of our donors who played an integral role in helping to ensure that Art is for Everyone in Vancouver.

Because of our donors’ generous support, in 2023:

○ We welcomed over 40,000 people to the 27th annual Eastside Culture Crawl , with 515 participating artists over the 4-day festival – a return to pre-pandemic attendance!

○ 1,500 people participated in the newly expanded Create! Eastside Arts Festival art-making workshops and performing arts

○ Studio 101 gave 220 public school youth the opportunity to create art with professional artists.

○ We took important steps in the development of the Eastside Arts District by developing a communications plan and a pilot website.

For close to three decades, the Eastside Arts Society has created vibrant and lasting arts and culture programming, serving as a catalyst for meaningful community engagement. Our mandate is to continue to protect cultural spaces, build capacity for artists, and bring meaningful artistic experiences to the citizens and youth of Vancouver. In a city where the arts are continually pushed to the margins, our work is critical to ensure a future where art thrives. We want to build awareness, increase access, and advocate for the arts locally and beyond. This work is driven by the core belief that Art is For Everyone!

This year we need your support to:

○ Increase public awareness of our free and low-cost Culture Crawl and Eastside Arts Festival.

○ Scale up our pilot District-wide website that better helps to engage the community

○ Work for the preservation and protection of artist production spaces and cultural heritage.

○ Lead and collectively advocate for the sustainability of all arts and culture on the Eastside.

○ Enable equity and diversity in our programming by creating opportunities and partnerships with underrepresented artists and groups

○ Deliver enriching and life-changing arts programming for local youth

As a registered charity, we rely on donors and partners like you to be there for our community, our artists, and the youth we support . We hope you will consider making a donation to the Eastside Arts Society to ensure that we continue to produce accessible and lowcost programming because ART IS FOR EVERYONE!

Donating is Easy.

Donate online at www.culturecrawl.ca/donate or you can send a cheque to: Eastside Arts Society 108–1000 Parker Street Vancouver BC, V6A 2H2

*All donations receive a charitable tax receipt.
