CHATTER

I

was 16 years old when my aunt gifted to me a book on Medieval Art. For the next X years, that one gesture, has given me a lifetime filled with Art. Late summer is my favorite time of year to travel. Most of the tourists have gone and the museums become once again sacred places. And when you revisit museums like the Louvre you can count on the The Winged Victory of Samothrace to again make your heart race. With all the real life goings-on these days, now is the perfect time to explore old and new cultures through the eyes of art—in or out of museums. Couple that with a country that is on top of your bucket list—as Jackie Gleason used to say on the Honeymooners, ‘“and awaaay we go.” I choose Scotland and specifically Glasgow’s The Hunterian— Scotland's oldest public museum and home to one of the largest collections outside the National Museums. Now through January 14, 2018, the major exhibition reveals masterpieces from the Bute Collection—The Art of Power: Masterpieces from the Bute Collection. And if that’s not for you, just click on the ‘MUSEUM’ tab found on the Contents page of this magazine or the ‘MUSEUM’ tab on the CL website CulturedLifestyle.com. There you can explore museums around the world— tick one country off the bucket list, and experience art and museums that you might not have thought to visit. Wishing you the grandest of Summers; and until the August/September issue of Cultured Lifestyle arrives please visit us weekly for updates on LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. See you on the Internet. James Barra 6

BLUESTOCKING Born and raised in Mississippi, interior designer Meg Braff, who's own design shop is in Locust Valley, New York, has been praised extensively for her ingenious use of color and pattern. Meg Braff Interiors is known for its work in top resort locations including Bermuda, Palm Beach, the Hamptons, and Newport. Braff owns her own design shop in Locust Valley. n

EVERYONE WANTS A HOUSE FILLED with grace and charm. Classic yet cheerful, Meg Braff’s style has a formality that is never studied, an elegance that is approachable and pretty. In seven chapters that cover the basics of her look, Braff shares advice on creating rooms that are both livable and attractive. In the first two chapters, she explores the key elements of her look—color and pattern—and how to employ them for maximum impact in your home. She discusses the essential elements of stylish bedrooms (hint: bring back the dressing table), explores the fundamentals of inviting baths and breakfast rooms, and gives tips on making chic outdoor spaces. Finally, Braff explains the importance of finishing touches, the little extras that elevate a room’s decor from good to great. All of her advice comes together in an overall theme of gracious living welcomed by readers looking to impart polish, color, and grace to their home. Lushly illustrated with vivid images of Braff ’s lively work, The Decorated Home is an inspiring, ideafilled resource.

MATERIAL OBESSION

COUTURE LIGHTING While researching the company FUSE and its creator, Kevin Kolanowski, a line of copy popped-up: “Fuse Lighting, founded in 2000 by designer Kevin Kolanowski, offers a distinctive brand of exclusively hand crafted lighting designs.” Yes, in truth that is what they do today, but the larger narrative goes something like this:

VICTORIA PENDANT

Kolanowski, like many entrepreneurs, had a drive— to create extraordinary works of light. As the story goes, after heading up Marshall Field's furniture display group and earning an interior design degree from Chicago's Harrington Institute, by1985 Kolanowski was L.A. bound, determined to open his own firm. In L.A., Kolanowski, with his modest size staff, started work on several major projects as an interior designer. After a time it became apparent for Kolanowski that there was a gap of interesting LONDON SCONCE

contemporary lighting that would incorporate unique materials, semi-precious stones and shells. Unable to find lighting that exemplified Kolanowski’s reflections, the idea of a FUSE lighting line was created. Today FUSE creates amazing works of light that continue to surprise and delight clients as well as Kolanowski. “There exists such an abundance of visual poetry in nature, in the realm of light and color—it’s only natural to aim to integrate our joyful appreciation of it,” says Kolanowski. Here are some of our favorite FUSE lighting creations. n

CARYN SCHACHT AND DAVID FOX fell in love wth New York City’s landmark Studio Building long before they bought this apartment. They lived in a spacious loft space in the Flatiron district with their newborn daughter when they realized that the layout was not conducive to their lifestyle going forward. They decided to move uptown to be closer to both of their offices and to school. They recognized the fabulous bones of this pre-war home but there were still changes which needed to be made. There was a very small kitchen, Caryn loves to cook and wanted a large family room where everyone could gather at days end to regroup and relax. Fortunately the kitchen was connected to a library conveniently making a family room/kitchen.

Caryn has spent the last thirty years shopping around the world—Continental Europe, China, Japan, Thailand, Scandinavia— for her showroom Lorin Marsh and has a very specific point of view which is a comfortable tailored approach with the elegance of today. She loves varied textures and earth tones and the certain mix of transitional style and modern style. Caryn wanted to use many of her favorite vintage pieces and her many custom resources the world over to fabricate both comfortable and stylized pieces. Although Caryn has tremendous experience with furniture and accessories, she needed her longtime friends and designers, Michael and Leonard, to use their decorating expertise to merge with her ideas for a completed project—a collaboration that was natural and easy—making a home that is both beautiful and relaxed. n

THE WESTERN SHORES OF LAKE MICHIGAN are dotted with some of the most lyrical examples of midcentury prairie style architecture in America, and this jewel of a home, recently restored by Milwaukee’s Schlagenhaft Studio, is no exception. Located on a gentle clearing near the water’s edge, the house was built in 1955 and while neither large nor extravagant, was built with an eye towards gracious efficiency. Typical of the period, the overall composition is decidedly low-slung, hugging the flat terrain. Rooms are generous but tempered by low ceilings. Ample overhangs further emphasize the linear aspects of the massing. Clearly well-maintained over the decades, the house still needed a complete overhaul to accommodate the needs of the new owners, empty nesters who downsized from a 6000 sq. ft. house in which they raised their family, to this 2000 sq. ft. residence that would join their real estate portfolio.
