s Fall turns to Winter, this is the time of
year when we feast on the new products for designers by designers, artisans and
purveyors new and old. A time to see what the creatives bring
to market. And perfect timing to see the work of Kara Mann, designer extraordinaire. Her creative maturity—blending the elements of time, place and culture—is exceptional. On a more traditional note, Wade Weissmann's take on a project that I would give my eye-teeth for is no folly—but then again, it is. Weissmann's FOLLY is on one of Nashville’s most beautiful estates. A place on the property where one can go all year long, for any reason, and be in a comfortable deeply lush environment where only the atmosphere is your outlook and attitude. Material Obsession takes a first look at the new Kenzo
Takada collection for Roche Bobois and in L’OBJET architect Luca Andrisani’s about-to-be launched tabletop for Lenox. It’s off to the markets and new discoveries. See you on the Internet. James Barra

PIED-ATERRE: MAGD ALENA KECK PIED-A-TERRE by MAGDALENA KECK Author: TIZANA PROIETTI
The danger with minimalism is that, by stripping out excess or ornamentation, spaces can feel cold and unlivable. Although this works for some, many who appreciate clutter-free living crave something warmer—it takes a certain skill to pare back an interior and maintain a welcoming ambiance. But this is exactly what New York-based designer Magdalena Keck has achieved during her years of working experience applying her philosophy across a varied portfolio that includes residences, retail, and offices. Whether it’s the staircase enclosed by white vertical slats that cuts through tech company Square NY’s offices in the city’s Cast Iron district or walls of cardboard columns at 80/20’s Manhattan workspace, Keck manages to bring drama to minimalism. It is a quiet drama that sings rather than shouts; a choir of harmonies rather than a bold solo. Feature elements in her designs integrate seamlessly 14
CULTURED LIFESTYLE
into their surroundings, while providing just enough interest to catch the eye. This is even more evident in Keck’s residential work, for which she has deservedly received the most attention and praise. Sticking to a strict palette and set of rules for each project allows her concepts to permeate throughout a space— from a one bedroom pied-à-terre to a threestory penthouse. What impresses me most about Keck’s work is that, through careful material choices and selection of both hard and soft furnishings, she manages to make even the most sparse home feel homely. And it’s not just by using the mid-century furnishings typically associated with this interior style that the effect is pulled off. The atmosphere of a restrained yet cozy Scandi loft is easily enough evoked with abundance of palewood and a set of
BLUESTOCKING
Wegner’s wishbone chairs. But Keck achieves the result with contemporar y pieces, often sourced locally, creating that look that remains quintessentially New York. In the twenty-first century, when all are glued to screens and forever touching cold, hard surfaces, it is this kind of minimalism that one craves. Gone are the days of sleek and shiny finishes, we increasingly desire a tactility that comes from textiles and woods. The importance of these materials is not lost on Keck, who has the ability to integrate these textures into rooms in a way that preserves a crisp, clean aesthetic while still feeling soft and sultry. In her hands, less can still be warm n From Forward by Dan Howarth

KENZO TAKATA & ROCHE BOBOIS
Luckily for world the of fashion, designer Kenzo Takada got his first break from the Bunka Fashion College, which for the first time allowed male students. He was also part of the first wave of Japanese stylists to try their luck in the fashion capital of the world, Paris. Since then Takada has traveled the road of women's fashion, men’s fashion, and perfume. Keepi ng to fo r m and i n novative s t y l e, h i s branching out into the interior design and decor scene is a natural fit. For Roche Bobois, Takada reimagined the iconic Mah Jong sofa, furnishings, fabric and ceramics that showcase his signature style of graphic and cultural references. To accomplish this Takada blended origins, a master palette of colors and delicate patterns, reinterpreting them creating three expressions of gentleness, vivacity and depth for the three times of day—ASA morning, HIRU midday, YORU evening.
T he fab r ics Takada p rod uced a re a su i generis collection where ancient kimonos are the inspiration. Says Takada, “The new fab r ics, a lthoug h made i ndust r ia l l y, sti l l respect the spirit of the old kimonos, paying par ticular attention to the jacquards and materials used. From the outset, I wanted to use inspiration from the patterns found on kimonos, specifically the weaving that was used. These designs and patterns were the guidelines of this collection for Roche Bobois, but I wanted to completely change their colors and interpret them in a new way. Every effort has been made to ensure that these new fabrics, although made industrially, still respect the spirit of the old kimonos, paying par ticular attention to the jacquards and materials used.” Fabr ic and ceramics showcase Takada’s s i g nat u re s t y l e of g ra ph i c a nd cu lt u ra l references. For a touch of the contemporary, the collection incorporates new ceramics a l ong w ith match i ng occasiona l tab l es. Each version is a per fectly balanced and coordinated scheme, including the handtufted rugs designs by Kenzo Takada. The ceramics were inspired by the Japanese spirit and savoir faire in the art of fire pottery. Aka Hanawa vases, for example, are vases in hand-turned San Sepolcro clay, from Italy. RECOGNIZED FOR HER UNIQUE TASTE SENSIBILITIES, Mann
was inducted as a member of the VOGUE 100, an influential group of leaders known for their distinctive taste in fashion and culture. The list of influential publications and books having featured her work is long: Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Traditional Home, &C. A native of Chicago, today she's bi-city, with an office and residence in New York—and a person with a rocket in her pocket. Let me explain. Prior to her own business, Mann conquered many areas of the design field. Fashion, Art, Design, a student, a stylist, a have at being an employee with both residential and commercial firms, then lastly her own gig, Kara Mann Design, which she established in 2005 in addition to her own fabric and furniture lines. Today, Mann is at the vanguard of a new emphasis in design—one with deeper substance and depth. CULTURED LIFESTYLE

A 1970’s bronze Belgian Console created by artist Robert Phandeve, is ever pointing in the direction of Tracy Emin’s neon art. Off to the side is a cozy office space with a Chrome Hearts desk and credenza on a vintage Modernist rug by Elizabeth Lipton ca. 1940, from Alberto Levi Gallery. Afternoon sun drenches the living and dining rooms equally, warming up the marble wall fireplace and showcasing Mann’s curated picks— two upholstered chairs, a Fran Taubman coffee table and a custom orange Tuscan fur rug. Not to be overshadowed, the dining room plays host to a Carlos de la Puente custom crystal chandelier, a custom silk rug by Holland and Sherry. The dining table by Jordan Goodman, is an impressive compliment to the bronze dining chairs by French designer Paul Mathieu. For entertaining, Mann chose for the bar a custom Christophe Come metal and glass cabinet, highlighted by a David Wiseman pendant, and on either side are sconces by Frederik Molenschot.

ON A PICTURESQUE TREE-LINED street in one of Nashville’s most prominent historic neighborhoods, a quintessential Georgian façade of brick and local fieldstone needed refreshing. The owners who were longtime residents of Nashville, dreamed of hosting large social gatherings and events in their home, and they wanted their property to echo the historic grace of their Southern town, while also reflecting a certain “architectural correctness.” In order to accomplish this goal, they turned to architect, Wade Weissmann, and interior designer, Whitney Baldwin, both of whom had collaborated with them on previous endeavors. CULTURED LIFESTYLE
FOR THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT, Weissmann's
task was to create a focal
point beyond the confines of the classic Georgian manor that was both striking and private. Ultimately, he decided upon the design of a modest but impressive garden folly, inspired by historic French and English design. What this stand-alone building may lack in square footage is more than made up for in personality, with its exquisite interior and exterior detailing. The structure anchors the pool and courtyard, boasts a full bar and bath, and serves as a destination room year-round. Interior designer Whitney Baldwin worked closely with the clients on the magnificent interior, incorporating a favorite game table and partner’s desk with reproduction upholstery pieces by Dennis & Leen, covered in Clarence House fabrics. Additional elements from Jasper and John Rosselli, complete this elegant, timeless interior. CULTURED LIFESTYLE

I N S PI R ED BY TH E US E O F proportion and refined detail, Weissmann removed the numerous additions from the back of the home and in their stead created a resplendent formal lawn court, as well as a spacious covered porch and outdoor fireplace for casual entertaining and dining. A classic dining table and chairs rest on the outdoor patio—perfect for sunset dinner parties. Additional garden elements including a small frog pond, a stone bench, walks of sheared trees and hedges, and a square lawn define an exterior courtyard. Beyond the courtyard, a swimming pool terrace was re-designed and rebuilt with bluestone pavers, complete with a pool that reflects a darker blue-toned pigment for a dramatic touch. By incorporating a subtle level change, gated entry points were also designed to be less noticeable. Shutters, new lighting and a fresh color scheme for the main residence top off the redesign. The project has transformed the quality of life for the clients, providing a delightful place in which to regale family and friends n CULTURED LIFESTYLE

A PAD IS A PAD IS A PAD; that was then, this is now—HAP 5, designed by Karim Rashid, considered the most prolific designer of his generation. Rashid’s design reach goes well beyond products. Today his stretch includes residential and commercial interior design, such as Philadelphia’s Morimoto restaurant, and this HAP 5 residential project on Pleasant Avenue in East Harlem, New York City. Pleasant Avenue, one of the last streets to have remained and was part of the original configuration for Harlem’s Little Italy. For the benefit of Manhattanites—yes, that’s right—before Little Italy was south Manhattan, it was northeast in Italian Harlem. There are only twenty units—a variety of studio and one bedroom apartments—all claim large private terraces. According to Rashid, "We used the balcony as a design feature to generate dynamic play and variety along the façade of the building… each unit receives this large, yet intimate space that extends the senses beyond the interior, making the apartment feel bigger and brighter than it actually is. Due to the dynamic shift of the geometric play along the façade, each balcony partition is formed at a skew from the floor below. By offsetting this connection of alternating connecting balconies above and to one side, we are left with strong angular "S" geometry that is further detailed with beautiful pattern work. This pattern allows light and shade to play through the form and converts the enclosure into a soft, permeable trellis."

"In the interior, we’ve maximized the use of open space by concentrating the programmatic infrastructure, kitchens and closets, into compressed areas that delimit space but do not obstruct it from natural light. This allows for light to travel deep into the space and keep the apartments bright and well lit." Each apartment comes with designer amenities—kitchens and baths, inunit dishwasher, washer and dryer, including open city and garden views of Manhattan. East Harlem is a vibrant up-and- coming neighborhood. And Pleasant Avenue sits on a tranquil tree-lined street, steps away from the rest of the city n 66
