Class Organization By: Eleanor Erwin

It’s the same thing every year. You tell your councilor what you want your classes to be, and that gets written down and organized in programming. Two weeks later, you get your schedule back. Nothing special. Or so it seems. Now, I have a few questions. [thank you Amy Prlchaska, Lucia Arreola, Alexa Norman, Taylor Wagoner, Eduardo Chen, Lucia Gonsalez, and Majer Cordle ] How much time does programming have to organize hundreds of kid’s schedules done? For the first week, you can sign up for classes as early as January, so programming gets a pretty good head start. For the second and third week, programming sometimes has only a few days. Is there an order to what units get first pick? Sort of. It works like this: the first unit who enters there class wish list is the unit who gets first pick. If B3 entered theirs first, and 6 kids from that unit wanted Spanish, then the kids would most likely get that class. Fun Facts: A lot of kids I interviewed thought that they’re classes were too far apart. Here is my suggestion for that. Get a map of Culver. Circle an area of classes. Try to pick the classes from that area. That way, it would be closer together.

The Cooking Class fun while doing it all. I asked a big question like what do you like about Cooking class.

By: Grace Nelson

I got a lot of interesting answers. The interesting answers like you get to make new food you’ve never made before, to eat, trying and making new stuff, you can get to make different food from everyone else each day, every day you get to have fun.

Woodcraft started having Cooking Classes in 2016.

The two people that gave there quotes to me were Haley Melberger and Katy Barrnet.

The Cooking Class is only for Gold “C”. I went to the Cooking Class and asked questions made food, and had

The Golf House By: Owen Hart

The design of the golf house is quite interesting. 4 members of Augusta National had some ties to Culver and wanted to help pay for the house. But they wanted to model it after the golf house at Augusta National were the Masters are played. The names of the donors are Mr. and Mrs. Miles D. White ’73 Mr. and Mrs. Robart C. Vaughn ’74.

The Woodcraft Choir by: YiXuan Zhang The woodcraft choir was initiated founded more than 50 years. It was only for the purpose of serving for the chapel. It was formal required that all the campers in the woodcraft, whether they were willing to participated singing or not, had to sing during the church service. In addition, the core singing content of the choir was about the chants for the chapels. They used to hold rehearsals in the chess room, which was also the same class destination of camp play and drum lessons. However, great changes have taken place in several decades. Choir becomes an optional course, opens to the whole woodcraft. More various and marvelous chants, taps and chapels are added on the list of singing. Library is choose to be the rehearsal place because of the rapid increasing population of choir members. The goal of choir is to have fun, be joyful and get to know more campers form diverse divisions and wings in different age. For the campers who

haven’t join choir before, which will be the first time for them, it is a good opportunity to tap your potential and challenge yourself what you haven’t ever done before. Thus, the choir, in fact, is an incredible mixture of age group. Moreover, singing in the choir will assist you to develop vital and necessary ability of corporation and leadership by compromising with other choir members in daily rehearsals. Captain. Pare, who has a music education degree from Indiana University, is the recent new choir person. She took over the woodcraft choir from 1987 to 1988 and from 2015 to 2017, due to the request from Colonel Spahn, the director of woodcraft. She has a book of diverse songs collected from local by a sir. Some of the songs are good. Thus, she phone that sir and got permission of using the songs. Furthermore, she has been looking for the suitable songs, which the choir is able to sing, for years. They are de-

manded to be easy enough to remember quickly and have to sound good. Hence, the choir members will be confident about themselves. They can be different in speed and words, with a diversity of resources. Heart and Soul and Blue Moon are songs from videos. It is amazingly marvelous when various songs are song simultaneously by distinctive choir members, due to the same chord. The highest achievement of choir is to sing in the council fire for the taps in 2016 and 2017. Coun-

cil fire is always unchangeable and it is considered as one of the traditions which belongs to the ancient and mysterious Indians. Therefore, it can be a big deal. Captain. Pare and all the choir members wish they were to sing in the parade in 2018. The rehearsal time of the choir is Monday to Friday from 8:40 to 9:10, while the advanced choir is at Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 13:00 to 13:30. It used to be 45 min-

utes of rehearsal time. However, it is reduced in 2017. The advanced choir is only allowed to the cardinals and beavers. Thus, they can do some complicated songs, which may be overwhelming for butterflies and cubs. It is said that the advanced choir is going to give the woodcraft a surprising and accomplished performance. What is it? Let’s wait patiently and figure it out.

Gaga Ball By: Julian Cerda There are many fun things around woodcraft, but there is nothing like Gaga Ball. Unless you’ve been in your cabin all day and have avoided the outdoors, you have at least played or seen Gaga Ball. Gaga Ball is a form of dodgeball that takes place in a pit. There are around 5 pits in Woodcraft. What do people throughout camp think of Gaga Ball? I interviewed some campers to heart their opinions about Gaga. Daniel from D3 says, “I don’t think Gaga Ball is very fun because a lot of people cheat.” I asked other people

what they felt about this response. There were many mixed thoughts that I heard from them. One camper told me that sometimes the game can get too chaotic. Another person said something similar. “It’s very fun, but it can get boring after a long time.” But it’s not all negative thoughts around camp, one kid told me that it’s fun to meet new people and it is fun to play during rest period when there is nothing else to do. I asked Colonel Spahn on why they added Gaga Ball to Woodcraft, she said “ We added Gaga Ball because

we thought it would be good for kids to stay active outside and have fun during the day and the best part is that anybody can play it.” After all, there are many different thoughts and opinions in Woodcraft. If you ever want to play Gaga Ball, check around you for the nearest Gaga pit and grab some friends to play!

A Day in the Life: Gold C vs First Classmen By: Jack Duffy & Molly spencer

Gold Cs in woodcraft are known as the top of the popularity, with all of their responsibilities, classes, activities and possibilities. Have you ever wondered how it might be for a first classmen? Gold Cs are the equivalent of a 1st classmen in woodcraft. We talked to 2 gold cs one was a girl and one was a boy. The boy said that he thought leadership was showing people how to do stuff nicely not leading them the whole time but teach and learning. He also told us that he loved the gold c trips. Another thing he told us is that he thinks the hardest part about G.I is stripping and remaking the bed. The Gold c girl that we talked to told us that she thought leadership was about self-discipline and being nice to everybody. She also said that she does not find G.I hard and she said that the best Gold c trip was canoeing back from beason. All in all being a woodcraft Gold c is very fun.

1st classmen are the equivalent to a Gold c in Upper camp. “Upper camp is way funner than woodcraft “said Emily cox. We talked to 2 1st classmen girls Emily cox and Hailey Hanely. They told us that upper camp has more responsibility because the deck counselors are only there if something bad happens. Emily cox was the athletic person and she told us that her job was to sign people up for events in track and swimming for the deck. They also told us that it is more fun than woodcraft and they do not care how you fold your clothes you just have to fold them neatly. They also told us that upper camp is thinking of creating an aviation deck. In upper camp they have P.I (which is done by 1st classmen) and G.I (done by the head of the deck). They told us that in upper camp they have hot showers and a lot of the buildings have air conditioning. “The hot showers feel good every day after a long day” said Hailey Hanely. All in all Upper camp is a lot of fun and teaches you responsibility.

Girls vs Boys By: Marinieves Linden and Lucia We all know that at culver there are a lot of differences between the girls and the boys. We have decided to find the most important differences to create a comparison, and this is what we found out. We decided to interview Major Tricky, he told us that “the cabins were very different in every aspect but one of the most important aspect is that the way we fold our shirts are different than the boys, another thing is that the girls have a theme every summer so the cabins are more decorated and even more organized”. Major Camrow told us that “they expect more in AIs than

9

in GIs that’s because the problem that the boys have or some of them is that they don’t keep them clean throughout the day or week”. They also grade the cabin counselor’s room, it doesn’t have to be as organized or as clean and neatly folded but as Major Tricky said it has to be presentable for if a parent or someone wants to come in and because counselors are also part of the cabin team. At the girls side it is all very different, we are used to have our room organized and clean, normally they expect more at GIs than in AIs. Our counselors are allowed to have their

room however they want, they don’t have to follow any expectations. After analyzing every difference between the hill we came to conclusion that each side has its own qualities and expectations, that also comes with the advantages and disadvantages between each side.
