Culver Military Discipline by: Kim Bandyopadhyay In Culver’s summer camp all woodcraft campers are required to participate in military drills and marching. Culver’s woodcraft camp is heavily based off the military. Every week campers have the chance of earning different banners such as the marching banner, the military achievement banner, and etc. But, in order to achieve this, the campers have to follow the honor card. Honesty, leadership, self-discipline, consideration, and cooperation are five of the principles on the honor card that everyone should apply to their daily lives in order to reach such goals. What do you think of Culver’s Military Discipline(C.M.D.)? How do you think it is beneficial? “I think C.M.D. is very tough”, says China Marzette from C1. “It is a good learning process. You get respect and toughness”, she says.
I agree with China, Culver military drills and discipline is hard. Woodcraft campers have to work hard to do a good job here at Culver. They have to persevere and stay determined. Culver military has benefits, it teaches campers life lessons and discipline. How has C.M.D. affected you? Do you think Culver is doing the right thing making Culver memorize the Honor Card? “Culver makes you a better person; it helps throughout your life”, says Renata Balderama-Carillo from B1. “I think they are right, because even when you’re not in camp you need to be cooperative, fair, and nice to everyone”, she continues. Renata shows how even though Culver is strict with military discipline, it teaches campers important lessons. So far, the honor card has helped me in many ways. For example, my cooperation skills have improved since my first year of Culver.
How has C.M.D. helped campers? “Culver military drills make campers more disciplined and structured. They take the Honor Card really serious to the point the Honor Card’s principles become a part of the campers. The strict discipline helps campers become more confident and more knowledgeable”, said Major Dewald. “Culver teaches campers to look after each other and to feel empathy to others,” she adds. The process of Bronze C’s(learners) turning into Silver C’s(listeners) and them turning into Gold C’s(leaders) teaches campers many positive things. Such as, Bronze C’s have a goal to achieve or something to work up to. Silver C’s have two jobs, to listen and to sometimes lead. Gold C’s have the responsibility to lead and to help out the Silver C’s and the Bronze C’s. What are your thoughts on C.M.D.? Are there any downsides to this? On a scale of 1-10, how stressful/over whelming is it?
By: Villarreal Mrimieves Everyone thinks that Upper school is better than Woodcraft because of the better food and more free time, but is it really better? We wanted to find out. We had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Green, the Director of Upper Schools, and some upper campers to tell us some differences between Woodcraft and Upper School. In Woodcraft, there are more campers than in Upper School, which has about 600 campers. The boys in Upper Schools must choose between the School of Aviation, the Naval School and the School of Horsemanship for classes, where in Woodcraft boys can take whatever classes they want. In both Woodcraft and Upper School, girls can take any class they want.
“I think that they’re good and professional,” says Paris Marzette. “No, the marching helps keep track of everyone and at breakfast we are all orderly”, continues Paris. “On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 1, because it’s good for you, it’s rewarding, and gives you good habits”, explains Paris. Some campers struggle with Culver’s Military drills and some people are okay with it. But, it is good to stay positive like Paris. Overall, Culver Military Discipline (C.M.D.) defines Culver and makes it unique. At first, campers have a hard time getting used to the strict rules of Culver. Gradually, campers become more confident at Culver and excel. It is easy to get discouraged, stressed out, and overwhelmed at Culver, but campers have to use the Honor Card, be determined, and hard work hard to truly have a fun time at Culver.
Upper School In Upper School, every camper has only one roommate instead of 11 or 12. Some of the newer rooms even have air conditioning! In every dorm, there is a phone that can use to call outside Culver every day. Upper campers also have more time to hang out with their friends and go the bookstore. There is also more free time for Upper campers, but they are stricter about what time to be at classes, formation, etc. Something that is not so good about Upper Schools, is that they have retreats twice a week, one on Tuesday and another on Thursday. They also have stricter uniform requirements. There are more military restrictions in Upper Camp than here at Woodcraft.
In Woodcraft we are divided by Gold”C” , Silver”C” , and Bronze”C” and in Upper Schools, they divide by classes, depending on their number of years at camp: First Class, Second Class, and Third Class. They go to the movies on Wednesday, and it’s optional. You can stay and take a nap, but they have more classes than us. They have six classes in one day, but they don’t have the fun classes like we do here at Woodcraft! In our opinion, we think that no matter if you are in Woodcraft or in Upper Schools, here at Culver, you will make memories that you will never forget in your lifetime.

The Truth Behind Being a Major By: Erika Garcia Carrillo
The Culver Stables by: Addison Dollahan and Alexa Labella
Have you ever wondered what happens inside the Culver stables, or what people like most about the stables? We interviewed Elizabeth Beto from B1 and she said she loves the horses and she also loves grooming them. Next, we interviewed a riding teacher named Mrs. Haugas and she said she enjoys teaching at the stables because she loves the horses and the students. The Culver Black Horse Troop has participated in the Presidential Inauguration Parades for the past 104 years. In 2016, Culver took 80 horses with them out of the 94 horses that live in the stables. I bet that the horses used fly spray for all of the inaugurations that they have participated in. In order to be in the black horse troop you have to go to Culver Winter School which is a sleep away high school.
I’ve always wanted to know what it’s like to be a major, and I thought that this class would be the perfect opportunity to find out. I asked some majors from different wings and divisions some questions, and their responses differed.
A: “I woke up, and my golf cart wasn’t there, but it was in the gaga pit,” Major Arvelo (Girls Director) said.

The award for the top 2 fastest horses goes to… the Quarter Horse and the Thoroughbred. The Quarter Horse receives the award because it is the fastest for short-distance, but the thoroughbred would be faster for long distance. One opinion that we have and would really like to share is that the stables is our favorite place to be. The stables are extremely relaxing and peaceful because the horses inhabit the stables.

Aviation By: Jack Duffy and Nicolas Fuentes The Aviation program for Beavers and Cardinals is a very interesting program so we thought we should take a look at what they do. It is in the Dicke Math Hall and the Roberts Science Hall and you have to take a bus to get there on time. In the Aviation program in Woodcraft, they give an introduction to Upper School. Nikola Filipovic is the flight instructor in Woodcraft and told us that they cover instruments on the airplane and they don’t usually try the big simulators. Surprisingly, there has only been one person get their license since Nikola was here.
7
After the interview, we asked if we could use their mini simulators and they said yes. The aviation program is amazing for all the ages but Beavers and Cardinals are the only ones allowed. We thought we should ask the head of aviation to see what she does in the aviation program. Major Welch told us that she loved planes as a little kid so she got her private piloting license. All you have to do to get into the aviation program is to sign up. If you are an outstanding student in aviation and have a lot of respect then you may be able to do the flyover during the Garrison

Parade. After learning about what they do we wanted to know the history of the program so Major Welch said that the program started in the 1920’s and came back in 1972. The Culver airport got closed because of a person crashing in the lake and dying. Major Welch has been here as the aviation director since 2014. Each of their five planes gets used five to six times a day. Most days there can be about 30 flights a day. All in all, the staff on the Vedette recommends to you to join Culver aviation so you can get your license and fly planes.

Woodcraft Summer Movie Reviews By: Abby Cameron
Madagascar
This movie is about four animals living in the comfort of their home, a zoo in New York City. One day, they escape, wanting more from life than being caged, and accidentally get shipped off to the island of Madagascar. This adventurous story of freedom and friendship will have you leaving the auditorium laughing and satisfied. I like this movie because it is both funny and adventurous.
The Secret Life of Pets
The Secret Life of Pets is about a dog living comfortably alone, when suddenly a new “brother” comes along. The dog is forced to give up his attention from his owner. They soon get captured by animal control and they have to set aside their differences and work together to get out of that “ruff ” situation. This movie will make you learn about friendship, teamwork, and kindness. I like this movie because it is funny. In my opinion, though, the story plot is a bit all over the place.
Dolphin Tale
Inspired by a true story, a young dolphin named Winter hurts her tail in a crab trap while swimming in the ocean. She’s taken to a marine hospital, where doctors have to remove her tail and say she will never swim again. However, with the help of a dedicated young boy and a skilled doctor, Winter can be saved and learn to swim again. This great movie of caring will help you learn about friendship. I love how it’s inspired by a true story, and it shows the strength of friendship between people and animals.
Crooked Arrows
A mixed-blood Native American, Joe Rogan, returns to his family on the reservation after being away for many years. Joe wants to modernize the reservation, but he first must prove his loyalty to his tribe by rediscovering his ancestry. He becomes the head coach of the reservation’s high school lacrosse team, and faces some challenges as he prepares them to compete in the state championships against other elite lacrosse teams. Batman doesn’t want to adopt the movie, from the trailer I can him at first, but he also doesn’t want to expect great things from this movie. The movie sounds very live without a family anymore. The entire movie is done with Lego fast-paced and interesting. animation, which isn’t common in many movies. This hilarious story of acceptance and family will knock your socks off. The amazing stop-animation to the greatness to the story are great factors in this movie.
