Kids rely on candy. Here at Culver, I can see that. I can tell because there is so much candy, and so many kids want it constantly. We get lots of candy after permit, too. There are all sorts of candy, but there are some that are more popular than others. Here are some I have noticed: Laffy Taffy, Sour Patch Kids, Twix, Gummy Worms, and Skittles. There is also a snack called Takis, that people treat like candy.

The Candy Bins By: Sara Read

I also asked her: When can they have it and why? Her answer was that they can have it on permit and when they earn it. So it becomes a privilege.

I asked her if she had any advice and I interviewed B2 cabin counselor, Lt. she said that candy bins are really important. We live in the woods so Feldman, with this question: How there are a lot of bugs and mice. When much candy does your cabin have candy is left out or there are crumbs, and why? it attracts the bugs and mice, so make Here was her answer, “Too much sure you have candy bins. because their parents won’t stop sending it, and they won’t stop buying it. Half of my room is filled I wanted to compare Butterflies and Cardinals, so I asked Lara Houssais, with candy.” from C2: How much candy do Cardinals have compared to Butterflies I also asked her: What do you do and why? with the candy and why? Her answer was, “I put it in candy bins and give it to them when they pass inspections or win honor cabin.” She says, “it’s because they need to earn it, I can’t just always give them a bunch of junk food.” I also interviewed Maj. Kelly, of B1, to compare this to the butterfly units. I asked her: How much candy does your unit have and why? She said, “Yes, they have a ton of candy.Returning campers bring it, and then new campers bring it back from permit. It’s like the cool thing to have.”

The Vedette // Culver Summer Schools & Camps

Her answer was, “Not a lot compared to Butterflies because we have more stuff to do. We are more about snacks than candy. When you become older, you want less candy.” I wanted to know what is more popular and why? And she said, “Takis. They are really popular here because there are a lot of people here who like spicy snacks.”

Lastly, I interviewed Lorena Nieto and Gala Chedraui from B2 with the question: When you write letters, do you ask for the candy you get and why? Lorena said that sometimes she does because she likes candy. If she doesn’t get the candy she asked for, she does not care. Gala said, “Yes, because candy is a part of life, and you can die if you don’t have it.” My second question for them was: Do you get enough candy partoes and why? Gala said, “No, because I never get to eat my candy.” Lorena said, “ Yes, because it is for when we work hard, and we get rewarded.” Gala also agrees with that. What I have learned is that kids like the candy so much for many different reasons. One, because it is thier reward. Another is because it becomes like a neccesity for them. Also, it reminds them of home, and it helps them connect and fit in with other campers. Candy is more important than you would have thought. Candy can help cope with home sickness or can be another reason to write home. Anyway, kids rely on candy.

When I asked about what it’s like having a sibling at Culver, Maj. Maes B2 said, “it’s fun; all we do is laugh!” Maj. Maes of D3 said “I don’t just have a sibling, I have a best friend.” I also asked about what they do together here at Culver, and they By: Zoe Young both said that they have breakfast with their unit, run errands together, plan activities together, do a book club together with Have you ever wondered about the Maes’ lives? both their units, and give each other ideas. Another question I interviewed Maj. Maes from B2 and Maj. Maes I asked was “What makes you different from the other Maj. from D3 to see what it was like in their life here Maes?” Maj. Maes from B2 said that she is older and that in camp. Both Maj. Maes’ were not campers, but she’s more sensitive. Maj. Maes from D3 said that, when he Maj. Maes of B2 was a junior counselor, cabin was younger, he was more organized. He also said that their counselor, and a major in C2 before becoming differences don’t matter because they balance out. Maj. Maes the major of B2. Meanwhile, Maj. Maes of D3 of B2 continued by saying that his strengths are his sister’s was a cabin counselor in D&B, then a major in weaknesses and her weaknesses are his strengths; that’s why D7, he worked in activities, and then he became they make the perfect team. Cardinals vs. Butterflies

By: Starla

Some campers would like to know the difference between the Cardinals and Butterflies. There are quite a few differences, as well as a few similarities. One of the obvious differences is that Butterflies are the younger girls while the Cardinals are the older ones. I asked the Cardinals and Butterflies the different games and events that they have. The Cardinals have both cabin games and wing games just like Butterflies. The cabin games that Cardinals play are mushball, basketball, and nuckem. Then, for wing games there is kickball, volleyball, and soccer. On the other hand, for Butterflies, their cabin games are whiffle ball, volleyball, and soccer. The wing games for Butterflies are soccer and kickball. When asking Maj. Bowers (C-1 Major) how disrespectful she thought the Cardinal campers were, she happily explained what her opinion was on the Cardinals’ disrespect. “I wouldn’t think they’re disrespectful,” she said. “I think that, especially in the first week of camp, the campers don’t trust their counselors.” She says that the Cardinal campers aren’t disrespectful. When C-1 camper, Elizabeth Bauer was asked the same question, she said that her fellow Cardinal campers could be a little disrespectful when it comes to cleaning, other than the little disrespectfulness when it comes to cleaning, she said that they were very respectful. Asking the Butterflies the same question, they said that the other Butterflies were respectful. It’s just that the Gold C’s could sometimes be a little bossy when the Bronze C’s fold wrong or don’t clean the right way. Some of the activities that the B-2 Butterflies have include card games, tetherball, and gaga ball. In Cardinals C-1, the activities we do include socials with other wings/divisions, cleaning, and just hanging out around the unit. I decided to ask a few of the Cardinals which they preferred: Cardinals or Butterflies. All the Cardinals that were asked this question said that they preferred Cardinals over Butterflies because, in Cardinals, they are given more freedom. Overall, I have learned that there are many differences when it comes to Cardinals and Butterflies, as well as similarities. In the end, hopefully you can decide what unit you think would be better to be in at Culver Woodcraft Camp. 3

Woodcraft or Upper School A lot of people say that Upper Camp is better than Woodcraft. We went out to interview campers and Upper School students to see if this was true. We went to HQ to find Col. Spahn, the director of Woodcraft, and asked her some questions. We asked her, “Why do we go to Upper Camp after Woodcraft?” She said that Upper Camp was actually made 10 years before Woodcraft! Another question we asked her was, “Would you work part-time at Upper Camp and Woodcraft?” She said that she would love to stay at Woodcraft because she likes the age group, and it would be harder to get Upper School students from point A to point B. Some Gold C Cardinals want to go to Upper Camp, but some just want to attend Winter School. Brighton Bird, from C2, said that she wants to go to Upper Camp because she thinks that Upper Camp has more freedom than Woodcraft. Also, her friends are going to Upper Camp too.

By: Lily, Meaghan, Ghalia

We asked other questions about Woodcraft and Upper Camp. We asked Meghan Gifford, from B2, if Woodcraft should be more like Upper Camp. She said that Woodcraft should be more like Upper Camp because they have dorms instead of cabins, plus they have more freedom and better food there. Next, we went to Upper Camp and asked students some questions. We asked them if dorms were better than cabins. One person said that they like dorms because you have more space to put your stuff in and because they are more modern. We also asked, “How many years have you been in Woodcraft and Upper Camp?” They said that they have been in Woodcraft for four years and in Upper Camp for one year. All of the people we interviewed seem to like Upper Camp more! But I believe that some people like Woodcraft more. If you are a Gold C Cardinal/Beaver, you must be sad that you have to leave Woodcraft and move on to a new path in your life. I hope you have a fun time learning new stuff at Upper Camp or Winter School! Kayla and Eemer

Top Notch Patches By: Kayla and Eemer

Lily, Meaghan, Ghalia

The Patches On your sash or coat there are patches, and you may have a lot or you may have a little. When it comes to the time when you’re a Gold C Cardinal or Beaver, then you get to take special classes called Top Notch. Top Notch is for more advanced students who know how to handle things like making a rockets or using a glue gun. They can make an ojo into incredible things, and they can make a city filled with people and restaurants. They can speed as fast as the wind on a horse, and they can dance gracefully in council fire. Scouting One Top Notch patch is scouting. In Top Notch scouting you learn how to carve wood, build fires, camp, make different types of knots, and much more. To get your Top Notch patch you need to have a patch and bar in normal scouting. We interviewed Maj. Foersch, the teacher of top Notch scouting, says, “In Top Notch scouting, each day we have a different topic we learn about. We made a Dutch oven out of a pizza box and tin foil; we went camping and made a monkey bridge. The students learn how to make different types of knots, and we teach them the different strokes of wood. We teach them how to build a fire. When one of my campers went to a different camp, and they were trying to see who could build a fire, since we taught him how to do that, he and his brother won.” 5

The Vedette // Culver Summer Schools & Camps

Indian crafts In Indian Crafts, the Top Notchers make their own patches. They also get to make leather bracletes, and they use a hot glue gun by themselves. Maj. Kamrow says, “The students can have the size of their crafts as big as they want. I did Top Notch Indian dance and Arts and Crafts. The hardest one was Arts and Crafts. I wasn’t very artsy, and I made a dear on the wall head.” The kids in Arts and Crafts get to make whatever they want on their own. Rocketry In Top Notch Rocketry, the kids have their own instructions. They get four of the biggest engines, and they can make them look like anything and paint them any color they want. The rockets are allowed to be six ft. tall! Maj. Peppers says, “We have a mark by the door that says the rockets can be six ft. tall.” Conclusion Top Notch patches seem so much more special and meaningful than all the normal, regular patches. When I was interviewing, I expected to have to ask more questions in order to get elaborate answers. They gave a lot more information to me than expected.

Uniforms are a big part of Culver, so we decided to write about how this impacts the culver community. Since this camp By: Maria Annya is based in military ideas, uniforms help provide order to the units. In an effort to Lani: “Dress A’s” explain our idea, we decided to interview Stella: “Dress A’s” campers and their thoughts on uniforms. Bosco: “Athletics”

Uniforms

Question 1: Do you like the uniforms? Lani Dye from C1: “Yes, but sometimes they can get hot.” Stella from C3: “Sort of, I think, for the girls’ uniforms, the shorts should be different.” Bosco Fox from D&B: “Yes, but they are a little too simple.” Question 2: Are uniforms helpful? Lani: “Yes, it helps distinguish who is who.” Stella: “Yes, they allow you to find your unit faster.” Bosco: “Yes because you can see your division easier.” Question 3: Which of the uniforms is your favorite? The Vedette // Culver Summer Schools & Camps

Question 4: Why do you think we use them? Lani: “Because the camp is military, and it makes us look the same.” Stella: “It makes us all look the same.” Bosco: “To know the divisions and represent Culver.” In conclusion, uniforms help us to identify our unit and have control of the campers. Having three different uniforms means we use them for different occasions and events. Our opinion about uniforms is that they are a good way to distinguish us, but at the same time, make us all look the same. Our favorite uniform is our Dress A’s because it makes us look fancy, and we get to show of our patches and ranks.

Gold C’s Q & A By: Lara

Being a Gold C is a lot of responsibility, yet really fun at the same time! This is a fun question and answer interview to see what Gold C’s do. I interviewed some Gold C Cardinals that have been here a long time. Q: What pushed you into wanting to be a Gold C? A: “The leadership opportunities and being the top dog to show everybody else how to be a better camper.”-Taylor Brewer (C2) A: “Since my first year of butterflies, I always saw Gold C’s graduating and getting positions, and my dream was wanting to be them.” -Maya Moussa (C3) A: “As a Silver C, I always looked up to Gold C’s, and I wanted to be a leader. I knew my Gold C year would help me achieve that as a 6 year camper, and this is my second time being a Gold C. Just the feeling of being a Gold C and helping my peers is always fun.” -Caroline Cox (C1) Q: What went through your mind the first time you heard of a

Gold C?

A: “They were very intimidating because they have been here for more years, and you want to be just like them.” -Taylor Brewer (C2) A: “I wanted to be one of them, and I wanted their positions. I asked how I could get them, and they said I had to be a Cardinal Gold C.” -Maya Moussa (C3) A: “Personally, I think I was scared of them; they were so much bigger than me, and they hold so much power, so it was a little intimidating as a 9 year old.” -Caroline Cox (C1) Q: Was Top Notch the reason you wanted to be a Gold C? A: “No, because you have more opportunities as a Gold C than in Top Notch classes.” -Taylor Brewer (C2) A: “Yes, because I saw the Top Notch Indian Crafts projects, and I wanted to make one so badly.” -Maya Moussa (C3) A: “Not really, I mean, yeah, Top Notch is neat since you get another patch, and you have a lot more freedom than others taking the class. My urge to be a Gold C was the fact that I can lead my own peers by example due to all my experience.”-Caroline Cox (C1) Q: How do you feel about being a Gold C? A:”I like it because you have more opportunities, but I’m sad because it’s my last year at Camp.” -Taylor Brewer (C2) A: “I waited to be here in this position, and you feel on top of everything” -Maya Moussa (C3) A: “Kind of depressing because it really hits you the last two weeks that you won’t be attending woodcraft. I mean, next year we have the opportunity to go to upper camp, but I feel that woodcraft will always be my second home even though I’m not there. Caroline Cox (C1)

Camper Thoughts on Indian Crafts By: Eduardo Culver Summer Schools and Camps have an immense variety of different classes, one of them being American Indian Crafts. It’s one of the most favored activities in Camp! So, I interviewed some people to see what they think about American Indian Crafts! Carolina Comerlatti, from B3, stated that she chose Indian Crafts because a lot of people did Indian Crafts in her cabin, and they came back with a lot of cool projects such as dream catchers, ohos, shields, and much more! Her favorite thing about Indian Crafts was that the things that they do are more unique than the things from Arts and Crafts, more creative, and overall more interesting. The most challenging thing for her were the Dream Catchers because they take a very long time, and sometimes she doesn’t have a lot of patience. She would definitely recommend it to someone because you learn new, completely original crafts, and the process and the finished product can look stunning! Jonathan Primiano, from D3, said that he chose Indian Crafts because his friends did it, and the things they said about it and what they did were cool. His favorite part about Indian Crafts was that there were a lot of types of things to do, such as ojos, shields, Dream Catchers. The hardest thing for him was sharing all the materials with other people when there wasn’t a lot of resources and in the beginning of the shield making process (if you have a hard design). He would also undoubtedly recommend it to someone because you would learn how to share resources, how to work individually and as a group, and have a blast overall! So, although I only interviewed 2 people about their perspectives about American Indian Crafts, I believe that other people would say the same and it is indeed, a much loved activity in Culver Summer Schools and Camps, and one that will be a memory that we will remember forever. Why Do People Come Back to Culver? By: Lorena and Gala People come back to camp because Culver is an incredible place where you can learn how to be a leader, also because it’s a place where you can demonstrate what you want to be. The girls’ director, Maj. Arvelo, said she comes back to Culver every summer because, “there are a lot of opportunities, and at the start of camp it may be difficult for the girls, but by the end they’ll have a great time.” People come back to Culver because at their home there is no such thing as Culver, and you can learn many things even if you didn’t know that they existed. Also, at Culver you can make great memories with friends that you’ll never forget. Lt.Feldman said that, to her, Culver is a home away from home. After interviewing Lt.Feldman, she seems like she had great experiences in Culver, and I feel really happy because I can see that Lt.Feldman had great experiences back when she was a camper. I think that Culver is a happy place even though there are things that may be very hard.

Horse Stables By: Scarlett

Scarlett

Scarlett

The horse stable is a big part of Culver. I interviewed Miss Lambert, who is a trainer for woodcraft equitation basic. I went and asked her a couple questions. What is your favorite horse at the stables? She said, “Galatea because she is a very good horse and listens well.” Why do you like riding horses? She said, “I have been riding horses since I was five. Also, when I get stressed out I think of horses.” What it is like being a horse trainer? She said that it is cool because she was at woodcraft and now she is a trainer. “Also, I can ride whenever I want.” Why are horses so special to you? She said that, when she would get picked on for liking horses, she would always think of them. Finally, I asked Miss Lambert if she is scared of being on an animal as big as a horse. She said, “Sometimes, but it just depends on the horse.” This is Miss Lambert’s first year working with woodcraft, but she has been riding for four years. She said the two fastest horses at Culver are Reckless and Autumn. Reckless is also the toughest horse to ride. The tallest horse at Culver is Albi, and the shortest horse at Culver is Angel. The heaviest horse at Culver is Mena. There are many horses that have different body colors, this includes Frankie—he has one blue eye and one brown eye—and Clyde, a flea-bitten grey Aspen-Palomiono. Miss Lambert said the oldest horse at the barn is Eve. At Culver there are ninety-four horses at the stables. There are 12 horse trainers at Culver, including Upper School. The five horses that are in the front for Parade are Jonkers, Thomas, Dom Perignon, Galatea, and Brent. The Culver Black Horse Troop started in 1897. Culver Without Military By: Alexa and Andrea

Hi, we are Andrea and Alexa, and we are going to talk about the opinions of the military aspect in Culver. Culver is the best camp ever, one in which you can learn and practice a lot of things, and you can meet new people from all over the world and make relationships that can last forever. When we wrote this article, we realized that the military aspect can teach you a lot of things. When you tell your friends that your camp is military, they go crazy, but you know that Culver makes you a better person and wouldn’t be the same without the military part. We asked some campers and staff about their opinions about how Culver would be if it wasn’t military.

How do you think Culver would be without being military?

Kylinn Kain from B3 said: People would enjoy more because the parade lasts for a long time, but at the same time it wouldn’t be the same if there wasn’t parade or retreat. Mariangela de Leon from C3 said: Everyone would break the rules, and they would do whatever they want to, whenever they want to. Lt. Linares from C2 said: It would not be the same because the military part is a part of Culver where you can practice its values.

Would you like it if it wasn’t military?

Kylinn Kain said: I like it more since it’s military, and I think that it’s fun doing parade because all the people see me. Mariangela de Leon said: More or less because inspections sometimes are hard, but also useful. Lt. Linares said: Yes, because all the classes would still be fun and awesome, but it wouldn’t be the same.

Alexa and Andrea The Vedette // Culver Summer Schools & Camps

Alexa and Andrea

Why do you like Culver being military?

Kylinn: Marching everywhere is faster, and sometimes I feel proud because I did well in parade. Mariangela: Because it helps you become someone better in life. Lt. Linares: Because it teaches you to work in team, and here you will practice and learn new things that you can’t do at your home.

How does Culver’s military system make you a better person?

Kylinn: It teaches you how to be cleaner and to have order in life, to have self- disipline, and what to do when you have an inspection or something like that. Mariangela: It helps you to understand the importance of having disipline in your life. Lt. Linares: It teaches you how to have more disipline, help others, and do your best. Pros: -You become cleaner -Constant teamwork -More organized -Great values -Leadership opportunities -Learning how to be a leader

Cons: -Can’t scratch when you want (parade or retreat) -Can be really strict -Parade and retreat last a long time

We agree with the people we interviewed because Culver wouldn’t be the same, and it wouldn’t teach you the same ideas that it teaches you now. Even though, when marching, you can’t even scratch when you want to, we also know that Culver makes you a better person, and that Culver is awesome. The message we want to teach you is that Culver is an amazing place, and it’s our happy place. Maybe sometimes you will be homesick or sad, but Culver will be there for you.

Permit By:

Permit is one of the best activities in Culver because you can leave Woodcraft and go to the campus of the military camp and upper school of Culver. The times that you can leave on the permit are on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday: 12:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sunday: 12:00 AM - 7:00 PM We interviewed a counselor in D6, Lt. Velver, and a camper in D5, Daniel Sanchez, about permit. When we asked them why they like permit, Lt. Velver said, “Because we have the opportunity to rest after all the hard work that the counselors do.” When we asked Daniel, he said, “Because I can be outside of Culver with my family and my friends.” When we asked to Lt.Velver what he does on permit, he said, “I take out as many campers as I can.” When we asked Daniel what he does on permit he said, “The normal things that I do on permit are: eat pizza, see movies, and have fun with my favorite brother, Luis.” When we asked Lt. Velver where he goes on permit, he said, “Shack of upper camp, movies, restaurants, etc.” When we asked Daniel were he goes on permit, he said “I normally go to the movies, Bookstore, restaurants, etc.” When we asked Lt.Velver what his favorite activity that he can do on permit is, he said, “Go with my family and friends to different places.” When we asked Daniel what his favorite activity that he can do on permit is, he said, “I can pass time with my family and friends.”

The Dance

By: Charlotte and Katya

Do you like the events at culver? Well, I like all of them, but my favorite is the Cub and Butterfly dance. We interviewed Maj. Bowers, the Maj. of C1, to see what she thought of the dance. She said that she loves the dance because she likes watching all the units come together. She also said it’s really fun to see the boys and girls dance with each other. We asked Sterling Waterfeild, from B2, what she did last year at the dance. She said she didn’t have a date last year, but she had fun anyway. We also asked Zoey Young, from B2, and she said she likes the dance because it’s a way for kids to have fun after classes and get together with your date or friends. The dance was on July 9th; hope you have enjoyed the dance!

Boys vs. Girls By: Kaily

We all know that boys and girls have different uniforms, but have you ever wondered what else is different? I went to ask Maj. Maes of B2, what do you do as a major? Her response was, “I make sure that everybody’s uniform is taken care of. I also communicate with the parents, that’s another part of my job. And my job is to make sure all the campers are healthy.” I also asked, what do you play in Wing Games? Her response was, “Well, Wing Games are when units are divided into teams to play kickball or soccer.” Then, I went to see Mariano Murillo in D6 to ask him, what do you think of Maj. Cislak? His response was, “He is nice. He is a good person.” Then I asked him, what does your major tell you to do? His response was, “Stop moving in ranks. Go form up.” After that interview, I interviewed Corola Roman in B3 and asked her, what do you think of Maj. Ahlenius? Her response was, “I like her. She is really nice.” I also asked her what does your major tell you to do? She forgot. So I asked Mikayla Yates in B1. Her major is Maj. Kelley. Favorite Thing About Culver By: Alexander

I asked a group of people, “What is your favorite thing about Culver and why?” Culver is place where people can come together from different cultures and learn more things like new sports, new languages, and to meet new people. I thought that people would say Water Ski or Air Rifle, but they said things more meaningful. Eli Stezer, from Division 5, said, “I like the classes because you learn more things, and I like making new friends from different cultures.” Sean Coxhead, from Division 5, said, “I think that the patches and the rank is my favorite because I want people to see me in a way in which they respect me.” Ander Esteinou, from Division 3, said, “My favorite thing about Culver is playing with my friends and meeting new people because I get to make new friends from other countries and cultures.” Lieutenant Colmenares, from Division 5, said, “I think that it is all the discipline because it teaches all the kids to behave and think correctly for the rest of their lives.” I think that my favorite thing about Culver is all the classes because it gives you a chance to try new things like, Water Ski, Archery, Air Rifle, a new language, and a new instrument to play. Also, meeting new people, since many people come to Culver from different countries and states to get this chance to try new things which I think is amazing.

Everyone had really good answers. I’m very impressed with both girls and boys. I learned from this article that discipline is very They both have good majors and campers. important because it can change your life forever. I think it’s a tie. GO CULVER!!! Also, Culver teaches people to fold clothes, make a bed, and to march. Culver is a great place for everyone to enjoy and have fun in all the classes they are in. [I’m a girl]

Woodcraft Pranks By: Elizabeth, Aundrea, Sofia

Here at Woodcraft, pranks are one of our traditions. What everyone expects is that the campers do the pranks, but the staff are in on it too. Here are some of the best pranks we have had at Woodcraft. Maj. Trickey said, “Back when the girls were new, the boys would always prank them. So, the girls decided to get back at them. Two counselors named Ms. Cox and Ms. Pikes went over to the stables and saddled 3 horses, and brought them over to the girl’s side. At about 6:00 AM, they filled up LOTS of water balloons and at 6:30 they charged with the horses up Beaver Hill and threw the water balloons at all the cabins and got all the boys soaked. So, no prank has ever topped that one, and no one ever will because they will get kicked out of camp.” The next prank that we have is one of the best! Maj. Trickey said, “back when I was in my 20’s, about five other counselors and I had an idea for a prank, so what we did was we took all of the headquarters furniture and put them on the retreat field. When we were done, we parked all of our Volkswagon Beatle cars in the middle of headquarters.”

Maj. Trickey said, “Back when the male and female counselors were still at war, one of the male counselors decided to do another prank, so he took about 50 mice and painted them with glow in the dark spray paint and threw the mice in the girl’s cabin. One girl was not frightened by the mice, so she decided to get revenge and took every single mouse and put them in the counselor’s car. When the counselor was driving, he found a mouse on his shoulder. He was afraid of mice and almost got in a car accident.” In conclusion, our traditional Woodcraft pranks can be unpredictable, a fail, dangerous, or successful even though it takes a lot of hard work to pull off these pranks. In the end everyone has a good laugh. So which one of these are the best, and what will your prank be?
