Discover the Lake District, Cumbria, through the eyes of some of our food & drink heroes.
I believe that the best meal is the one that's grown right outside your doorstep - and here in Cumbria, I find the push towards local food and local producers really exciting. It's brilliant to see and be part of a new wave of food producers growing and creating everything from rapeseed oil to seasonal veg to pasta. It inspires me a lot in my baking practice and recipe development, and there's something so special about using strawberries in a cake that were grown only a handful of miles away!
With a host of Michelin stars and top-notch pubs, including four of the UK’s top 100, there’s no doubt that the Lake District is the UK’s leading food destination.
There’s been a dramatic increase in awareness around sustainability across the Lakes in recent years - something which forms an integral part of what we are about as a business. We grow a wide range of specialist produce on Our Farm, and source ingredients from trusted local suppliers, keeping quality high and food miles low.
We’re fortunate that the region is home to dedicated farmers, artisan producers and food businesses, who are all flying the flag for Cumbria and helping put the county on the UK food map.
The diversity and growth of Cumbria’s food & drink scene never fails to amaze me. As a proud son of the area and alumni of the hospitality sector I’m always cheerleading for our producers, business owners and service superstars. As well as some of the country’s finest natural backdrops, we are regularly recognised as having some of the leading foodie haunts and products. Is there a better accompaniment to a day in the lakes, an afternoon on our coastline or time spent exploring the area’s history than some freshly prepared fodder and a Cumbrian welcome? You’d be hard pressed to find one.
With a galaxy of Michelin stars, as well as a whole host of cosy country pubs, friendly cafes, excellent restaurants, and outstanding food and drink producers, you’re sure to find something to tempt your tastebuds here in the Lake District, Cumbria. As well as two national parks, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and three National Landscapes, our region is also home to a culinary scene which is fast becoming one of the best around. Discover a tapestry of flavours amidst our breathtaking landscapes, packed with talented chefs and producers creating award-winning food and drink.
Home to the most Michelin stars outside of London, as well as numerous AA Rosette awarded restaurants, Cumbria is the place to be for creative fine dining. Our vibrant menus take you on a tour of the Lakes, with chefs bringing innovative approaches to dishes starring locally foraged ingredients and flavours both classic and experimental.
There are also cosy country pubs, cafes, bars and bistros offering a warm welcome and menus packed with local flavour. Warm up after a countryside walk with hearty dishes, drink in the view with afternoon tea overlooking a lake, enjoy handcrafted cocktails in a vibrant city…there’s so much to choose from, to suit all tastes.
Local produce takes centre stage, from catch of the day overlooking the sea to Cumberland sausage and mash in a country pub. If you’d like to take something home with you, there’s plenty to choose from - including home made jams and chutneys, and locally brewed spirits and ales.
Craving a taste of Cumbria, delivered right to your door? Not a problem! Whether it’s a hamper of fresh produce sent straight to your holiday accommodation, or classic Lakeland treats for you to enjoy at home, we’ve got you covered.
