Walking & Cycling

The Lake District is known for its walks, and there are plenty to enjoy in and around Hawkshead – whether you’re looking for a gentle family stroll or something more challenging. The beautiful Tarn Hows is not to be missed, while panoramic views await on Latterbarrow.

For a great day out, head to Grizedale Forest: standing just above Hawkshead, it’s home to nature trails, an outdoor sculpture collection, Go Ape, and more.

Bike hire is available at the Tourist Information Centre and in Grizedale Forest, with cycling routes passing through stunning landscapes and fascinating heritage attractions. You can even bike or walk to the shores of Windermere, England’s largest lake.

Getting Here

Hawkshead is easy to get to via a range of transport options.

• By car: Hawkshead is located along the B5285. There is a pay & display car park in the village; parking is also available at the school during holidays for a donation.

• By bus: The Stagecoach 505 bus service runs between Kendal and Coniston, via Windermere and Ambleside.

• By boat: Windermere Ferry is a car and passenger boat which operates between Bowness-on-Windermere and Far Sawrey. From here, it’s a 10-minute drive or a four mile walk/bike ride to Hawkshead.

• By boat & bus: A seasonal Mountain Goat bus connects Far Sawrey with Hawkshead. Dates vary; check website before travelling.

Welcome to Hawkshead Village

Welcome to Hawkshead: a picturesque village in the heart of the Lake District. Steeped in history and surrounded by stunning landscapes, it offers plenty to see and do.

Dotted with whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, courtyards and squares, Hawkshead is packed with character and charm. Discover independent shops and eateries or immerse yourself in the area’s history – the village has connections with William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. The Parish church, St Michael & All Angels, stands proud on a hill in the village centre.

The surrounding countryside offers walking and cycling routes for all levels, from challenging hikes to accessible paths and lakeshore bike rides.

Literary Connections

Did you know? Hawkshead has literary connections with some of the Lake District’s most famous writers.

William Wordsworth attended school in the village; visit the Hawkshead Grammar School Museum to see where he was educated.

Beatrix Potter spent much of her life here: see the places that inspired her ‘little tales’, and explore her former home of Hill Top - just a stone’s throw from Hawkshead.

Food & Drink

Hawkshead boasts a great variety of places to eat and drink. Cosy country pubs offer hearty, warming fare; traditional tea rooms and cafes serve up delicious home cooked food; while there are quirky options for something a bit different!

Grab a bite to eat as you explore with take away snacks from delis and local shops - there’s everything from sandwiches, cake and freshly baked pies to handmade ice cream. Want to take something home with you? You’ll also find locally made jams, chutneys, gingerbread and more.

See & Do

Hawkshead is the perfect base to explore the Lake District, with lots to see and do in the village and surrounding areas.

Delve deeper into a rich history and culture. As well as Hawkshead’s literary connections, striking church, and historic buildings, there’s also nearby Wray Castle and the village of Coniston, which offer a look into the area’s past.

Enjoy excellent independent shopping, with everything from handmade gifts to outdoor clothing; local food & drink to fine art. Get hands on with a chocolate workshop, make your own soap or candles, or go fishing on Esthwaite Water at the local fishery.
