All systems go for our latest campaign
With the cost-of-living squeezing budgets and fierce competition out there, we know we need to work harder than ever as a destination to attract visitors and spend
To help us stand out against the competition, CT has developed a fresh new destination campaign, called Let’s Go, to inspire new and regular audiences It was incredibly well received at the recent Yorkshire Show and takes up the mantle from the award-winning #theplacetobe campaign
We will be rolling out ‘Let’s Go’ across a wide range marketing channels as we build towards autumn and winter
We’re also carrying out an extensive online visitor survey to examine motivations to visit, places visited, spend levels, satisfaction rates, intention to visit,
and much more All the insights will help directly inform and shape how the campaign develops
Look out for news of a member webinar in early autumn, focusing on how to target visitors in the quieter winter months and offering practical support to get involved in the campaign when it s officially unveiled in October Plus we ’ re teaming up with our Strategic Partner LocaliQ to create a 30-page destination supplement for newspapers across the North West
i Let us know if you have strong hi-res imagery and/or video showcasing Cumbria as a year-round-destination which you are happy to share as part of the ‘Let’s Go’ campaign: campaigns@cumbriatourism.org
New smart travel planner for visitors
We’ve launched a new online travel planner funded by the European Space Agency, to help visitors plan their trip in the most efficient way.
CT is at the forefront of this pilot project, using the latest satellite technology powered by You Smart Thing, which enables businesses to send out personalised travel plans to customers before they visit and notify them of travel updates
Visitors can search venues and places to visit across the county and are given personalised journey routes to help them experience new places Think of it as Google Maps Plus!
CT’s Senior Digital Marketing Executive, Rob Cowley said: This new technology will help improve the visitor experience by letting them create their own personalised travel plans for getting here and getting around In turn, that promotes and supports sustainable and active travel, helping visitors choose the best lowcarbon options by mixing travel by train, bus, car, cycle, walking and so on On a Cumbria-wide level, it means we are gathering important data about user travel trends which will help shape future destination planning too
The travel planner is free to use and easy to embed on your own website You can even add your EV charge points to the map and help increase the network
We’ve created individual travel assistants’ for all members listed on visitlakedistrict.com If you ’ ve chosen to embed the travel planner, visitors can then access the service on your own website
i Download our ‘Quick Start’ guide here and start using the travel planner as a tool in your marketing now. CT’s web team is on hand to help you at website@cumbriatourism.org.

Are you ready for new rules on tipping?
Expert view
The Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 is set to take effect on 1 October. Here Chief Executive of CT Strategic Partner Lamont Pridmore, GRAHAM LAMONT (pictured), offers his advice to businesses around the introduction of significant changes to tipping practices in the hospitality sector.
This legislation mandates that all tips and service charges collected via card payments must be distributed to staff fairly and transparently, with no deductions other than for taxes.
The allocation of tips needs to be carefully considered to create a fair method of allocation of tips based upon hours worked rather than allocated on the amount of salary paid
Be aware that cash tips given directly to servers are not covered by this Act
Businesses that previously used a portion of tips to cover staff expenses, such as meals during shifts, will need to find alternative methods to manage these costs
Meanwhile, establishments lacking a tronc system – a pooled arrangement for collecting and distributing gratuities – may need to consider the creation of such a fund to create a robust system of paying pooled tips
You would need to find a troncmaster who manages the tronc They must be independent of the business’s management to ensure unbiased tip distribution This role can play a useful part in maintaining compliance with the Act’s requirements but isn’t mandatory if the correct systems are put in place
includes, but is not limited to:
• Transparent policies: Develop clear, accessible policies outlining tip distribution methodologies
• Payroll adjustments: Adapt payroll systems to handle tips separately, ensuring that non-tax deductions are not applied Mismanagement could lead to penalties from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
• NIC considerations: Tips managed through an independent tronc are not subject to National Insurance Contributions unless paid directly by the employer
Taking proactive steps to comply with the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 is essential for legal compliance and can also enhance the financial health of your business
i For further help in navigating the new regulations smoothly, reach out to Lamont Pridmore’s tourism and hospitality sector experts on 0800 234 6978 or info@lamontpridmore.co.uk lamontpridmore co uk
New legislation to govern food waste disposal
It’s already estimated than hospitality and food service businesses throw an average of £10,000 of wasted food in the bin every year.
New legislation set to come into force in March 2025 means any organisation with 10+ staff will have to separate out and dispose of food waste separately from other waste, meaning the cost could rise even further
However, if you ’ re a SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) based in the Westmorland and Furness Council area, help is at hand! Cumbria Tourism has teamed up with the Westmorland and Furness Green Enterprise Hub to provide a free, personalised approach to food waste reduction
The scheme involves waste monitoring to identify key areas of waste and produce a personalised report, along with expert face-to-face or online sessions to develop a practical action plan to take your business forward

Welcome to work! News in brief
CT is running a ‘Welcome to Work in the Visitor Economy’ project funded through Westmorland & Furness Council’s Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) to help combat the recruitment issues in the area
It aims to help bridge the recruitment gap by supporting people who are unemployed into roles within our industry
Since January we have run eight Sectorbased Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs) for employers with multiple vacancies (with three more planned), giving job seekers an opportunity to learn new skills and gain tourism and hospitality experience
This includes people with disabilities,
people leaving the care system, refugees and those who have left school but haven t gone into further education or employment yet (known as NEETs) Following the programme, those taking part get a guaranteed job interview with an employer, with many securing work there and then
Over the past six months the team has supported almost 200 people looking for work, with a strong conversion rate into industry jobs
Meanwhile, we continue to work closely with local Job Centres and have visited a number of face-to-face jobs and careers events promoting live roles within the visitor economy and supporting the supply chain
Getting on board with worker transport challenges
Tourism Talent Hub
This extensive online resource has received 60,000+ impressions and 5,000+ users since its launch in December It enables people to access a wide range of training, including apprenticeships, adult training programmes, skills bootcamps and more Don t forget you can also advertise your job vacancies here for free
Furness roundtable event
Following successful roundtable events at Carlisle College, Kendal College and most recently Lakes College, we will be heading to Furness College on 10 October This will be a great opportunity for businesses and educators to talk direct about first-hand experiences and future skills needs
businesses are struggling to get their employees to work using public transport, we recently recruited a Worker Transport Coordinator to help tackle the issue.
It’s a big welcome to Natalie Fryer, who has taken on the role funded through Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership She s currently working alongside businesses to highlight gaps in provision and with council transport teams to help plug those gaps
Recent progress has seen an additional evening bus route 6 between Windermere and Barrow at 23 10, as well as more services both in the morning and evenings on Sundays
We ve also recently carried out a Worker Transport survey with businesses to delve into
n 17% of all staff working within Cumbria s hospitality industry rely on public transport to get to and from their place of work
n Only 26% of businesses agreed that their business is accessible by public transport
n 84% of businesses said that a lack of public transport limits their ability to recruit staff, while 66% say it limits their ability to retain their current workforce
Natalie is working closely with Westmorland & Furness Council and their Bus Service Improvement Plan Plus (BSIP+) consultation to feed in the findings from a worker perspective We are also sharing the findings with Cumberland Council to help shape their future plans
Email Molly at mhill@cumbriatourism org if you re interested in joining us

Taking the next step...
MICHAEL WALBY, Head of Corporate at Burnetts Solicitors, sets out his recommendations for selling or handing over your business Michael and Burnetts’ Corporate team are very active in the leisure and tourism market and have advised on the acquisition and sale of a significant number of businesses in the sector.
The latest Armstrong Watson Family Business Report found that more than 52% of leisure and tourism business owners plan to exit their business within the next five years, but a large number have no plan as how they will achieve it.
Aside from a few exceptions, most business owners only get to exit their business once, so it is important to ensure that the exit is successful, whatever form it takes
The three main routes to exit we tend to see in the sector are:
1 Passing on the business to the next generation of family
2. Sale to existing management teams (or management buy-out/ MBO)
3 Selling on the open market to a third party
To ensure a successful exit, whichever route you choose, one key theme applies –plan ahead Each route comes with its own careful considerations, and we can t
Michael Walby and Jennifer Bell
emphasise enough the importance of exit or succession planning:
• For the business – to ensure a smooth sale or handover, and to protect the legacy you have built, and
• For you – to maximise value, secure the best deal, minimise any liabilities and save tax
It is often too late to put issues right when it comes time to exit, so it is important to take the right professional advice now to avoid any unwelcome surprises That will allow you to deal with issues in advance of sale, rather than during the negotiations, which often leads to negative feeling, delay, indemnity requests, or worse – a price reduction
We have seen the same issues come up on a number of transactions in the sector, and can advise how to avoid, or at least minimise
their impact Business owners can also take advantage of significant tax benefits by putting steps in place now, but it is important to seek early advice as some steps can take time to have effect
In summary, we recommend that you start thinking about your exit strategy now, put a plan in place, and speak to professional advisers who have been there before and know the process They will certainly add value
i If you are thinking about selling your business, the Burnetts Corporate team can offer CT members a free one-hour consultation – please contact Michael Walby (Carlisle) or Jennifer Bell (Kendal).
