Accommodation options cater to all tastes, from boutique hotels and stylish B&Bs to self-catering cottages, caravan and lodge parks with sea views.
In the mid 18th century, the maritime port of Whitehaven, once the third-largest in the UK, was used as a template for the expansion of New York.
The North Pennines is a UNESCO Global Geopark and a National Landscape. As the darkest mainland National Landscape, it’s great for stargazing.
EDEN VALLEY & THE NORTH PENNINES
With unspoiled natural beauty, picturesque villages, tranquil landscapes and some of the darkest skies in England, this enchanting area offers a wide variety of things to see and do.
The Eden Valley is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with its rolling hills, meandering rivers, and network of walking and cycling trails. Hikers can traverse the circular Ullswater Way, while cyclists can explore scenic routes that wind through charming villages and countryside – like the Sea to Sea (C2C) and the Walney to Wear and Whitby (W2W).
The area is known for its country houses and castles with extensive gardens. Some even offer accommodation, so you can sleep in a castle yourself! There are family friendly activities like adventure playgrounds and cinema experiences. Absorb the tranquil atmosphere of Ullswater on board a traditional ‘steam’ boat, surrounded by dramatic Lakeland fells.
Quaint market towns like Appleby, Penrith and Alston (one of the highest market towns in England) provide a glimpse into the region’s rich history and heritage. Discover friendly villages like Askham, Melmerby and Pooley Bridge. Wander through cobbled streets, browse independent shops and galleries, and marvel at historic churches and castles. The Eden Valley is also dotted with charming tearooms, traditional pubs, Michelin-stars and local farmers’ markets, where visitors can sample local produce. Each year there is even a famous international marmalade festival!
Accommodation ranges from elegant country hotels, castles and cosy bed and breakfasts to self-catering cottages and well-equipped campsites, ensuring a comfortable and memorable stay.
With its unspoiled landscapes, charming towns, and abundant outdoor activities, the Eden Valley and the North Pennines is a captivating destination.
WHERE THE LAKES MEETS THE DALES
Did you know the Yorkshire Dales start here in Cumbria? Discover this beautiful National Park and the surrounding towns and villages. Experience a combination of unspoilt tranquillity, local charm, rich heritage, and outdoor adventure - with market towns, excellent walking and cycling trails, medieval ruins, and plenty more.
An extensive network of walking trails invites travellers to discover hidden waterfalls, ancient stone circles, and charming villages. You can also explore by bike, with scenic routes like the Lakes and Dales loop.
The area’s rich heritage is evident in its historic market towns. Between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales lies the town of Kendal: home to the ruins of Kendal Castle, as well as several museums and art galleries. In the Yorkshire Dales,
Sedbergh sits at the foot of the Howgills - great for walking and cycling - while the market town of Kirkby Lonsdale boasts a wide variety of atmospheric pubs and independent shops.

Sedbergh is England’s official book town.
Kirkby Lonsdale was the filming location for Hollywood movie, Dolittle.
CARLISLE & HADRIAN’S WALL
For city living and café culture, Carlisle is the place to be. Although a city steeped in history, there’s chic restaurants and cocktail bars to street food and thriving outdoor cafes. What’s more, the city centre has a relaxed feel and wide range of shops – from unique family-run giftshops to the big high street names you’d expect in a 21st century city. Enjoy the cities’ rich programme of events from Christmas markets to the luminary spectacle ‘City of Lights’.
Carlisle boasts a rich tapestry of architectural gems. Historic buildings and heritage attractions stand alongside modern shops, restaurants and cafes.
Carlisle is the western city of Hadrian’s Wall and just a short distance away this iconic frontier spanned the countryside on its journey that stretched all the way to the east coast and now offers the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Roman soldiers. The wall’s well-preserved remains, along with interactive museums and
excavated sites, provide a glimpse into the life and history of the Roman Empire.
The surrounding landscapes offer an abundance of nature and wildlife. Visit a farm park for a fun family day out. Talkin Tarn is a glacial lake just a stone’s throw from Carlisle, while Hadrian’s Wall National Trail Path runs all the way to the coastal town of Bowness on Solway. While here, discover the Solway Coast: officially designated a Natural Landscape, it’s home to birds like oystercatchers, lapwing and migratory waders.
When it comes to accommodation, there’s plenty to choose from, including aparthotels, country guest houses, self-catering, even Michelin Star restaurants with rooms, and more.
With its blend of history, cultural significance, and natural beauty, Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall create an unforgettable experience for travellers.

Lindeth Howe Hotel
Our beautiful hotel sits on a gently sloping hillside above Lake Windermere. It is as gorgeous inside as out. Period details that deserve a place in a building with such a great history as ours, blend seamlessly with the stunning new contemporary design of our lounges and bars.
Lindeth Howe was built as a summer holiday home in 1879. The owner rented the house out to friends for holidays amongst them were the Potter family. From 1902 to 1930, Beatrix Potter published her famous children’s stories and two of these stories, Timmy Tiptoes and Pigling Bland, she illustrated them whilst staying at Lindeth Howe. In 1915, after the death of her father, Beatrix Potter bought Lindeth Howe for her mother, Helen Potter to live in, various other owners followed Miss Potter until we came along in 1998 and here we remain.

Nestling at the foot of Shepherds Crag in the pretty Borrowdale valley at the tip of Derwentwater, the Borrowdale Hotel opened its doors in 1866 – just a year after the railway reached Keswick and Victorian visitors began exploring the Borrowdale Valley. As one of the first Coaching Inns, it gained a reputation for fine hospitality and was patronised by H.R.H. Prince Arthur, The Prince of Wales.
Today, that tradition of great hospitality and a warm welcome continues in this four star Lake District Hotel which underwent a full ground floor refurbishment in 2023 to offer guests a rejuvenated and luxurious experience with modern amenities and stylishly redesigned rooms.
From the moment you arrive, you will enjoy the unique and welcoming atmosphere created by the friendly General Manager and her team. Hawkshead Grammar School Museum
Situated in the pretty Lake District village of Hawkshead, the museum tells the story of school life since its founding in 1585. Our most famous pupil was William Wordsworth and his love of nature and passion for poetry started here.
The school building dates from 1675 and the schoolroom has not changed much in 350 years - visitors are encouraged to sit at the desk where Wordsworth carved his name and imagine how it would feel to spend their days learning Latin and Greek. Upstairs, there are exhibitions highlighting aspects of the school story including the historic school library.
All visitors are offered a short introductory talk and are welcome to explore at their leisure. Longer talks for groups or tours of the historic library can be pre-booked, subject to staff availability. We also have several activities for children, including quizzes, old-fashioned games and quill-writing.
