MA Literature Romanticism and the english lake district

MA in Literature, Romanticism, and the English Lake Disctrict University of Cumbria's Ambleside campus.

The landscape of the English Lake District has been a source of inspiration to generations of poets, novelists and writers. This taught MA offers you a unique opportunity to study literary texts from the 18th to the 21st Century within the landscape and environment that inspired them, at the University of Cumbria’s beautiful Ambleside campus, in the heart of the Lake District National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The MA will consider the powerful role played by literature in our conceptualisation of place, and in both the development and evolution of this Cultural Landscape.

The course develops advanced skills in literary and cultural analysis and provides opportunities to study a variety of material, from Romanticera poetry and travel writing to a range of postRomantic texts and contexts. Throughout the course, you will engage with a range of critical debates on issues to do with culture and the environment which have increasing importance within our society in the twenty-first century. The course can enhance prospects in a range of careers that demand high level analytical and interpretative skills, as well as advanced skills in written and oral communication. Specific career pathways might include work in publishing or in the creative or cultural heritage industries. The course can also support students wishing to go on to study at MPhil/PhD level.

structure and delivery The programme runs for 11 months from October to August. You will study six 20-credit modules across semesters one and two. You will also complete a 15,000-word dissertation (60 credits) over the summer on a course-related topic area of your choice. Teaching will predominantly take place through seminars and there will be some opportunities to visit local sites of cultural relevance. Students will be assigned an individual tutor for their dissertation with whom they will meet for one-to- one tutorials. "The MA course in Ambleside has been really inspiring. Learning about 'green' criticism and writing at a time when ecological concerns are everywhere has equipped me with the tools I need to address those concerns in my own life. Studying Romanticism in the heart of the Lake District, a landscape with such a rich literary legacy, brings you really close to the work that you do on the course. With incredible opportunities to study manuscripts at places like the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere, there's really nowhere better to learn about our natural literary heritage." Leo Finighan
