†GLORIA PATRI
#71 Glory Be to the Father — GREATOREX
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED
SCRIPTURE — Matthew 26:1-13
This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.
SERMON — “Disciple: An Extravagant Heart”
WE RENEW OUR COMMITMENT
PALM SUNDAY • APRIL 2, 2023 • 11:00AM
THE COMMUNITY GATHERS
The prelude signifies the beginning of worship. You are invited to be in a spirit of prayer and meditation. Please silence all mobile communication devices.
Con moto maestoso, (from Sonata No. 3), Op. 65 — Felix Mendelssohn
OFFERTORY
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross — Gilbert M. Martin When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; love, so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all! Amen!
†DOXOLOGY
#95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow — OLD 100th Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
RECEIVING OF ELEMENTS
MUSIC AT COMMUNION
Ride on, King Jesus — arr. Moses Hogan
CLOSING PRAYER
Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
WE GO AS GOD’S PEOPLE INTO THE WORLD
†HYMN #278 Hosanna, Loud Hosanna — ELLACOMBE
†BENEDICTION
†BENEDICTION RESPONSE
Ride On, Ride On in Majesty — Howard Helvey Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die, bow your meek head to mortal pain, then take, O Christ, your power and reign. Ride on! Ride on!
†POSTLUDE
Thank you for joining us in worship today.
Santus, from Mass in C Minor — Luigi Cherubini Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. (Sung in Latin)
†CALL TO WORSHIP
Almighty and everlasting God, who, in your tender love towards the human race, sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross, grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility, and also be made partakers of his resurrection. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, we pray. Amen.
†HYMN OF PROCESSION
#280 All Glory, Laud, and Honor — ST. THEODULPH
†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare:
We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love, whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to his children’s good. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace, the ground of our hope, and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and help in time of need. We believe that this faith should manifest itself in the service of love as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth. Amen.
†PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Almighty and forgiving God, we your unworthy servants give you most humble thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness, to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. Give us such an awareness of your mercies, that our hearts may be thankful, and that we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
WE CELEBRATE HOLY COMMUNION
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess before God and one another.
CONFESSION AND PARDON
The congregation is invited to follow the communion liturgy beginning on page 12 of the hymnal.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
