LET US WORSHIP Second Sunday of Advent • 11:00 am • December 6, 2020

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS VOLUNTARY

To God Alone on High Be Glory — Johann Sebastian Bach

GREETING INTROIT

City of God — Dan Schutte We are sons of the morning; we are daughters of day. The One who has loved us has brightened the way. The Lord of all kindness has called us to be a light for his people to set their hearts free. Let us build the city of God, may our tears be turned into dancing! For the Lord, our light and our love has turned the night into day!

CALL TO WORSHIP

O come to us, abide with us, our Lord, Emmanuel! God with us, You came to us long ago as a helpless babe, as one in need of human love and care. You taught us how to love and care for one another. Help us to hold on to child-like wonder, amazement, and love, and help us to love one another all year long. Guide our feet into the way of peace, as only the Prince of Peace can lead us, by laying down our lives for one another and serving one another. In the name of Christ, Emmanuel, God with Us, we pray. Amen.

HYMN (found on page six) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

#203 Hail to the Lord's Anointed — ELLACOMBE I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

LIGHTING OF ADVENT WREATH PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD'S PRAYER

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE

In the Bleak Midwinter — arr. Mark Shepperd In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away, when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; but his mother only, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him: give my heart.

SCRIPTURE Luke 2:4-7

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON

"Follow the Star — The Gift of Hospitality"

WE RENEW OUR COMMITMENT INVITATION TO OFFERING

OFFERTORY

Infant Holy, Infant Lowly (Polish Caro) — arr. Mack Wilberg Infant Holy, infant lowly, for his bed a cattle stall; oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Swiftly winging angels singing, Nowells ringing, tidings bringing, Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true. Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing, greet the morrow; Christ the Babe was born for you.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Almighty and most merciful God, from you comes every good and perfect gift. We give you praise and thanks for all your mercies. Your goodness has created us, your bounty has sustained us, your discipline has chastened us, your patience has borne with us, your love has redeemed us. Give us a heart to love and serve you, and enable us to show our thankfulness for all your goodness and mercy by giving up ourselves to your service, and cheerfully submitting in all things to your blessed will; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

WE GO AS GOD'S PEOPLE INTO THE WORLD HYMN (found on page seven)

#219 What Child Is This — GREENSLEEVES

BENEDICTION

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.

BENEDICTION RESPONSE

Morning Star, O Cheering Sight — HAGEN Morning star, thy glory bright far excels the sun's clear light. Jesus be, constantly, more than thousand suns to me.

VOLUNTARY

Toccata in F Major — Johann Sebastian Bach
