What Splendid Rays of Truth and Grace — Karl Kroeger

GREETING INTROIT

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 29 (In Unison)

HYMN (found on page six) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Heavenly Display (from Shaker Songs) — arr. Kevin Siegfried The waves of the ocean imitate the rolls of the heavenly music that rolls in heaven. O le ul um ulla, O glory to God for this heavenly display. The wheels of a timepiece imitate the flows of the heavenly love, love that flows in heaven. The wings of an eagle imitate the seraphim that soar in the heavens of heavenly love. Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon leap like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning. The voice of the Lord shakes the desert; the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, “Glory!” The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever. The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace. #103 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise — ST. DENIO I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 3

SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD'S PRAYER

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE

Come, Gracious Spirit, Heavenly Dove — Margaret Sandresky Come Gracious Spirit, heavenly dove, with light and comfort from above; be Thou our guardian, Thou our guide, o'er every thought and step provide. The light of truth to us display, and make us know and choose thy way; plant holy fear in every heart; that we from God may ne'er depart. Lead us to holiness, the road that we must take to dwell with God. Lead us to Christ, the living way, nor let us from His precepts sway. Lead us to God, our final rest, in His enjoyment to be blest; lead us to heaven, the seat of bliss, where pleasure in perfection is.

SCRIPTURE Mark 1:4-11

And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

OFFERTORY

Living Water of Life — David Lantz III Are you thirsty for the Master, for the God of all creation? Come through Jesus to the Father, through the life sustaining vine. Drink deeply from the living water of life. Drink deeply from the endless water of life. Like the waters of the Jordan, He will nourish and sustain us. Come through Jesus to the Father, drink the life of love divine. Like the woman at the well, we are human and with sin. Come through Jesus to the Father, feel his quenching deep within. Taste the water of all life.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Receive these gifts, O Lord. May they be magnified by your Holy Spirit to teach your children about your love, to show the world your grace, to bring healing to the broken hearted, to comfort the grieving, to embrace the needy, and to praise your name. We offer ourselves as instruments of your peace to the world. We offer our talents, our time, and our gifts to you. Use us as you will. Deploy us for your benevolence. Transform our hearts as we transform the world. We pray this in your Holy name. Amen.

THE WESLEY PRAYER CHALLENGE January 17 – February 6

Today, we began the New Year with a prayer that has been used by Methodists since 1755. It is known as The Wesley Covenant Prayer. Many people around the world and through the centuries have used this prayer to deepen their faith. For some it has become a guide for their lives. It was John Wesley’s expectation that the people called Methodists would use this prayer to remember who they were by renewing their faith through fulling trusting God’s love and grace to care for and lead them. Do you want to renew your passion in 2021? Would you like to deepen your faith and grow in your understanding of how to follow Jesus in the daily movements of your life? Then, I invite you to join me on a 21-Day journey into prayer through “The Wesley Prayer Challenge” by Chris Folmsbee. We will begin on January 17, 2021. Our Senior Minister, Glenn Kinken, will use his sermons to lead and inspire us each week as we consider the words of the Wesley Covenant Prayer each day for three weeks. As we move through the prayer, we will reflect on its meaning and then consider how to respond to its guidance through our daily reflections. You can purchase the book HERE. Each daily reading includes Scripture, reflection, and a challenge for that day. Choose how you want to engage, as an individual, with your family, or by joining a weekly discussion on Zoom. Options will be Sundays at 9:30am, Mondays at 7:00pm, or on Wednesdays at Noon. If you have questions about this congregational opportunity please contact Rev. Bret Cogan. Zoom links will be available on January 11.
