LET US WORSHIP Third Sunday of Advent • 11:00 am • December 13, 2020

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS VOLUNTARY

Savior of the Nations, Come (Chorale and Variations) —Hugo Distler

GREETING INTROIT (Sung in Latin) CALL TO WORSHIP

HYMN (found on page six) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Gloria in excelsis deo (from Gloria, RV 589) — Antonio Vivaldi Glory to God in the highest. Holy One, into mess you sent Perfection. Wrapped in flesh like ours, flesh that is weak, flesh that makes mistakes, flesh that has a liking for wrong even more than it does for right, you sent Jesus for your people. However, he never messed up! He never went the wrong way! He never broke your heart! May we, those whom you love more than we know how to love ourselves, strive to be more like him. We pray, God, that our lives make room for you to appear. Powerful God, we are unworthy of even unlacing your shoes, but let all we do bring you glory! In Christ’s precious name, we pray. Amen! #240 Hark! the Herald Angels Sing — MENDELSSOHN I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

LIGHTING OF ADVENT WREATH SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD'S PRAYER

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 3

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE

Ding! Dong! Merrily On High — arr. Mack Wilberg Ding! dong! merrily on high in heaven the bells are ringing; ding! dong! verily the sky is riven with angel singing. Gloria! Hosanna in excelsis! E’en so here below, below, let steeple bells be swungen, and “I-o, i-o, i-o!” by priest and people sungen. Gloria! Hosanna in excelsis! Pray you, dutifully prime your matin chime, ye ringers! May you beautifully rime your eventime song, ye singers! Gloria! Hosanna in excelsis!

SCRIPTURE Luke 2:8-20

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

OFFERTORY

How Great Our Joy! — arr. Craig Courtney While by the sheep we watched at night, glad tidings brought an angel bright. How great our joy. There shall be born, so did he say, in Bethlehem a Child today. How great our joy. There shall a Child lie in a stall, this Child who shall redeem us all. This gift of God we'll cherish well, that ever joy our hearts shall fill. Praise we the Lord in heaven on high.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

All things come from you, O God, and with gratitude we return to you what is yours. You created all that is, and with love formed us in your image. When our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You gave your only Son Jesus Christ to be our Savior. All that we are, and all that we have, is a trust from you. And so, in gratitude for all your gifts, we offer you ourselves, and all that we have, in union with Christ's offering for us. By your Holy Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

WE GO AS GOD'S PEOPLE INTO THE WORLD HYMN (found on page seven)

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.
