HYMN

(found on page six)

God So Loved the World (from The Crucifixion) — John Stainer God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoso believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. Praise be to the Lord, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege. In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. Love the Lord, all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. #2009 O God Beyond All Praising — THAXTED

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE

Throw Out the Lifeline — Ufford, Price, Black and Black Throw out the life line! Throw out the life line! Someone is drifting away. Throw out the life line! Throw out the life line! Someone is sinking today. Throw out the lifeline across the dark wave; there is a brother who someone should save. Somebody's brother! O who then will dare to throw out the life line, his peril to share! Throw out the life line with hand quick and strong: why do you tarry, why linger so long? See! He is sinking; o hasten today and out with the life boat! Away and away!

SCRIPTURE Philippians 1:1-11

Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

An Expression of Gratitude — David Schwoebel I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always with joy in every prayer for you, in every prayer with joy, I thank my God. I thank my God for your fellowship in the Gospel, from the very first day till now, I thank my God for you. And I am sure that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound more and more, abound in knowledge, in justice, that you may approve what is excellent to the glory of God, that you may be pure and blameless, filled with the fruit of righteousness, which comes through Christ Jesus.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Holy God, we marvel at your love for all your creation. When Jesus saw the crowds that gathered, he had compassion on them, and his ministry and the church that bears his name must always remember we were born out of compassion. We offer our gifts to continue the work of compassion, but more than this, we offer ourselves, as he also commanded us to “Go!” In his holy name, we pray. Amen.
