LET US WORSHIP Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost • 11:00 am • November 15, 2020

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS VOLUNTARY

Christians, We Have Met to Worship — Sondra K. Tucker

GREETING INTROIT

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 123 (In Unison)

HYMN (found on page six)

Open Thou Mine Eyes — John Rutter Open thou mine eyes and I shall see; incline my heart and I shall desire; order my steps and I shall walk in the ways of thy commandments. I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven. As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he shows us his mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us, for we have endured no end of contempt. We have endured no end of ridicule from the arrogant, of contempt from the proud. #368 My Hope Is Built — THE SOLID ROCK

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED SCRIPTURE 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Dona Nobis Pacem — arr. Kevin McChesney Grant us Thy peace.

Gracious God, giver of all gifts. We give you thanks for the blessings which you have given to us. Receive these gifts from the labor of our hands. May they be pleasing in your sight. Bless them and the ministries this offering will support. May they give hope, may they give comfort, may they bring peace, may they show your love to the world. We pray this in the name of Christ the Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever more. Amen.

Angel Tree is back, but like everything else in 2020, it looks a bit different. Adopting an Angel will be all digital this year. All of our angels are listed in the Google Form linked below where you can scroll through and select the angel(s) you'd like to adopt. If shopping isn't in your comfort zone this year, there's a new option to sponsor an angel. You may sponsor an angel by making a donation which will be used to purchase the gifts for that child. If the digital sign-up is out of your comfort zone, you can contact Holly Lee (336-712-9491) and she will help you select an angel. Gifts can be dropped off on Friday, December 4 from 9 am - 1 pm, Sunday, December 6 from 1 - 5pm, and Monday, December 7 from 11:30 am - 3:30 pm by coming by The Haven. Volunteers will collect the gifts from your car and bring them inside. More specifics about gift drop-off will be sent to you when you sign up for an angel. In addition to your gifts, we are looking for volunteers. Volunteers are needed to shop for sponsored angels, assist with gift drop-off and organizing, as well as getting gifts to our partner organizations. If you are interested in volunteering for any of these roles or have any questions regarding the Angel Tree, contact Jeanette Juran (jjuran@centenary-ws.org/336-724-6311 ext. 1332). We are excited to continue supporting kids in our community through this ministry.
