LET US WORSHIP Second Sunday after the Epiphany • 11:00 am • January 17, 2021

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS VOLUNTARY

Kum Ba Ya — John A. Behnke

GREETING INTROIT

Speak, O Lord — arr. John Ferguson Speak, O Lord, as we come to You to receive the food of Your Holy Word. Take Your truth; plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in Your likeness. That the light of Christ might be seen today in our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us all Your purposes for Your glory. Speak, O Lord, 'til Your church is built and the earth is filled with Your glory.

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18 (In Unison)

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.

HYMN (found on page eight) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

#454 Open My Eyes, That I May See — OPEN MY EYES I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 3

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD'S PRAYER

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE

Hush! Somebody's Callin' My Name — arr. Brazeal W. Dennard Hush, hush, somebody's callin' my name. Oh, my Lord, what shall I do? I'm so glad that trouble don't last always. I'm so glad I got my religion in time. Hallelujah, Lord! Oh, glory, Lord! Soon one mornin' death come creepin' in my room.

SCRIPTURE 1 Samuel 3:1-10

The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions. One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON

"Speak for Your Servant Is Listening"

WE RENEW OUR COMMITMENT INVITATION TO OFFERING OFFERTORY

4

Nearer, My God to Thee — arr. Dan Forrest Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee, even though it be a cross that raiseth me. Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God to Thee. Oh, let the way appear, leading to heaven. All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given. Thy spirit beckons me, nearer, my God to Thee. There in my Father's home, safe and at rest, there in my Saviour's love, perfectly blessed. Age after age to be nearer, my God to Thee.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Gracious God, giver of all gifts. We give you thanks for the blessings which you have given to us. Receive these gifts from the labor of our hands. May they be pleasing in your sight. Bless them and the ministries this offering will support. May they give hope, may they give comfort, may they bring peace, may they show your love to the world. We pray this in the name of Christ the Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever more. Amen.

BENEDICTION

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.

BENEDICTION RESPONSE

Hide Me Under the Shadow of Your Wings — John West Hide me under the shadow of your wings, O Lord, and give your angels charge concerning me: that I may lie down in peace, and take my rest, for it is Thou, Lord, only, that makest me to dwell in safety.

THE WESLEY PRAYER CHALLENGE

January 17 – February 6 We began the New Year with a prayer that has been used by Methodists since 1755. It is known as The Wesley Covenant Prayer. Many people around the world and through the centuries have used this prayer to deepen their faith. For some it has become a guide for their lives. It was John Wesley’s expectation that the people called Methodists would use this prayer to remember who they were by renewing their faith through fulling trusting God’s love and grace to care for and lead them. Do you want to renew your passion in 2021? Would you like to deepen your faith and grow in your understanding of how to follow Jesus in the daily movements of your life? Then, I invite you to join me on a 21-Day journey into prayer through “The Wesley Prayer Challenge” by Chris Folmsbee. We will begin on January 17, 2021. Our Senior Minister, Glenn Kinken, will use his sermons to lead and inspire us each week as we consider the words of the Wesley Covenant Prayer each day for three weeks. As we move through the prayer, we will reflect on its meaning and then consider how to respond to its guidance through our daily reflections. You can purchase the book HERE. Each daily reading includes Scripture, reflection, and a challenge for that day. Choose how you want to engage, as an individual, with your family, or by joining a weekly discussion on Zoom. Options will be Sundays at 9:30am, Mondays at 7:00pm, or on Wednesdays at Noon. If you have questions about this congregational opportunity please contact Rev. Bret Cogan. You can learn more and choose your Zoom link by clicking on the ENGAGE TAB of the church website.
