WELCOME TO WORSHIP

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. (Children, kindergartners through third grade, are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Children’s Worship. Children will return to reserved pews in the Sanctuary at the close of worship.)

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED

TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST • AUGUST 20, 2023 • 11:00AM

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS

The prelude signifies the beginning of worship. You are invited to be in a spirit of prayer and meditation. Please silence all mobile communication devices.

PRELUDE Adagio and Allegro (from Sonata No. 3 in F Major) — G. F. Handel

GREETING INTROIT

O Lord, Hear My Prayer — TAIZÉ

O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer. When I call, answer me. O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer. Come and listen to me.

†OPENING PRAYER

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life. Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

†HYMN OF PROCESSION

#101 From All That Dwell Below the Skies — DUKE STREET

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

†GLORIA PATRI

#71 Glory Be to the Father — GREATOREX

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

CANTICLE

Hymn of Mercy — Dan Forrest Gracious Lord, Thy mercy filleth all the earth below; and from heaven’s throne it falleth when to Thee I go. Mercy flowing, swift pursuing like a river strong, sympathizing with my weakness; mercy suffering long. Mercy calling with compassion: “Oh, return to Me.” Wounded are the hands extended, loving is the plea. How can I refuse Thy mercy? Whither would I flee? From my idol shrine I turn, Lord, reaching up to Thee. Tender mercy of the Saviour gently drawing nigh with the blood that cleanseth sinners ready to apply.

SCRIPTURE — Romans 11:1-2, 29-32

This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON

WE RENEW OUR COMMITMENT

Thank you for joining us in worship today.

SERMON NOTES

OFFERTORY

Allegro, from Sonata No. 3 in F Major — G. F. Handel

†DOXOLOGY

#95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow — OLD 100th Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

†PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

All things come from you, O God, and with gratitude we return to you what is yours. You created all that is, and with love formed us in your image. When our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You gave your only Son Jesus Christ to be our Savior. All that we are, and all that we have, is a trust from you. And so, in gratitude for all your gifts, we offer you ourselves, and all that we have, in union with Christ’s offering for us. By your Holy Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

WE GO AS GOD’S PEOPLE INTO THE WORLD
