WELCOME TO WORSHIP

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER • APRIL 21, 2024 • 11:00AM

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS

The prelude signifies the beginning of worship. You are invited to be in a spirit of prayer and meditation. Please silence all mobile communication devices.

† Please stand as you are able

PRELUDE GREETING INTROIT

Hymn of Praise — René Clausen

Alleluia. Praise God in His holy temple. Amen, amen, alleluia, amen! (Psalm 150)

†OPENING PRAYER

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people; Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

†HYMN OF PROCESSION

#318 Christ Is Alive — TRURO

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare:

We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love, whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to his children’s good. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace, the ground of our hope, and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and help in time of need. We believe that this faith should manifest itself in the service of love as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth. Amen.

come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

(Children, kindergartners through third grade, are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Children’s Worship. Children will return to reserved pews in the Sanctuary at the close of worship.)

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED

CANTICLE

Awake, My Heart — Jane Marshall

Awake, my heart, and render, to God thy sure defender, thy Maker, thy preserver, a song of love and fervor. Confirm my deeds and guide me: my day, with thee beside me, beginning, middle, ending, will all be upward tending. My heart shall be thy dwelling, with joy and gladness swelling; thy word my nuture giv’n, to bring me on toward heaven.

SCRIPTURE — Matthew 28:16-20

This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON — “To Be the Church: To Be a Witness”

WE RENEW OUR COMMITMENT

OFFERTORY

The Call (from Five Mystical Songs) — Ralph Vaughan Williams Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: such a Way, as gives us breath: such a Truth, as ends all strife: such a Life, as killeth death. Come, My Light, my Feast, my Strength: such a Light, as shows a feast: such a Feast, as mends in length: such a Strength, as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: such a Joy, as none can move: such a Love, as none can part: such a Heart, as joys in love.

†DOXOLOGY

#95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow — OLD 100th Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

†PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

All things come from you, O God, and with gratitude we return to you what is yours. You created all that is, and with love formed us in your image. When our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You gave your only Son Jesus Christ to be our Savior. All that we are, and all that we have, is a trust from you. And so, in gratitude for all your gifts, we offer you ourselves, and all that we have, in union with Christ’s offering for us. By your Holy Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

WE GO AS GOD’S PEOPLE INTO THE WORLD

Join us every Sunday at 10:00 am on the fourth floor (@Youth Commons) for ALL youth Sunday School. As always there are breakfast snacks, coffee & drinks, and friends & fellowship before the lesson every week!

Join us for our series in Youth Sunday school, “Faith Face to Face”. This new series is all about exploring your questions of faith. We asked you what your questions are; you told us what you’re wondering about, and together we will find the answers! In 1 Corinthians 14: 33 we are reminded that “God is a God not of confusion, but of peace”. We can’t wait for you to be part of this great opportunity to take one question of faith each week and seek God’s wisdom so that we might more grow in the likeness and love of Jesus.

YOU CAN HELP MAKE VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL A SUCCESS!

This summer we will be taking our kids on a Super Cool Underwater Bible Adventure for Vacation Bible School where we hope that they will be immersed in the knowledge that God loves them and so do we! In order for that to happen we need your gifts and talent and time! There is a place for everyone at Vacation Bible School whether you want to help with crafts, or snacks or you want to be a small group shepherd or a crossing guard. Perhaps you can’t be with us in person but you’d be able to help with prep work, no matter what your gifts and talents and time commitment are you can use them at vacation Bible School! Contact Kate May (kmay@centenary-ws.org/ext. 1331) and let her know you want to be a part of the VBS team!

YOU CAN HELP FEED HUNGRY STUDENTS IN OUR AREA

Did you know that we partner with Brunson Elementary, Wiley Middle School, Reynolds High School and the Winston Salem Street School to help fill their food pantries? At Reynolds and the Winston Salem Street School, we help stock food pantries where students can “go shopping” for food at school to take home. At Brunson and Wiley, we partner with them through the BackPack Program. The school administration identifies students in need of food and enrolls them in the program. We purchase “backpacks” through Second Harvest Food Bank – each one has two breakfasts and two lunches. If you’d like to partner with us in helping these students gain access to food over the weekends, you can do so through prayer, financial support, and volunteering to transport backpacks to schools! Contact Kate May (kmay@centenaryws.org/ext 1331) and she can tell you about all the ways we need your help.

Continue to celebrate the joy of Easter! Join us to hear Francis Poulenc’s Gloria presented by the Centenary Chancel Choir, the Greensboro Symphony Master Chorale, and Piedmont Wind Symphony. This masterwork, filled with a captivating mixture of solemnity and whimsical exuberance, remains a favorite with audiences. We hope to see you there!
