THE COMMUNITY GATHERS VOLUNTARY

Andante sostenuto (from Suite Gothique) — Charles M. Widor

GREETING INTROIT

Ubi caritas — Ola Gjeilo Where there is charity and love, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us together. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

† CALL TO WORSHIP (Adapted from Prayers for Inclusion and Diversity. Rupert Bristow)

God of great things, help us in the small things, so we that we can grow in hope. Equip us to lead, as well as follow. Inspire us to teach as well as learn. Send your love and Spirit to help us grow as disciples, who pray without ceasing, who seek to be faithful friends and kind neighbors for one another as well as all we meet.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

#103 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise — ST. DENIO We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God’s presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.

SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM & RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS

Do you as Christ's body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ? We do. Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include Eleanor, now before you, in your care? We give thanks for all that God has already given you and we welcome you in Christian love. With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround Eleanor with a community of love and forgiveness, that she may grow in her service to others. We will pray for her, that she may be a true disciple who walks in the way that leads to life.

Please stand as you are able.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD'S PRAYER

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE

Love Is Little — Ron Barnett Love is little, love is low, love will make our spirit grow - grow in peace, grow in light; love will do the thing that's right.

SCRIPTURE 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

Christ is just like the human body—a body is a unit and has many parts; and all the parts of the body are one body, even though there are many. We were all baptized by one Spirit into one body, whether Jew or Greek, or slave or free, and we all were given one Spirit to drink. Certainly the body isn’t one part but many. If the foot says, “I’m not part of the body because I’m not a hand,” does that mean it’s not part of the body? If the ear says, “I’m not part of the body because I’m not an eye,” does that mean it’s not part of the body? If the whole body were an eye, what would happen to the hearing? And if the whole body were an ear, what would happen to the sense of smell? But as it is, God has placed each one of the parts in the body just like he wanted. If all were one and the same body part, what would happen to the body? But as it is, there are many parts but one body. So the eye can’t say to the hand, “I don’t need you,” or in turn, the head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” Instead, the parts of the body that people think are the weakest are the most necessary. The parts of the body that we think are less honorable are the ones we honor the most. The private parts of our body that aren’t presentable are the ones that are given the most dignity. The parts of our body that are presentable don’t need this. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the part with less honor so that there won’t be division in the body and so the parts might have mutual concern for each other. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part gets the glory, all the parts celebrate with it. You are the body of Christ and parts of each other. (CEB) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

OFFERTORY

For Everyone Born — arr. Tom Trenney For everyone born, a place at the table, for everyone born, clean water and bread, a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing, for everyone born, a star overhead. And God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace: yes, God will delight when we are creators of justice, justice and joy! For young and for old, a place at the table, a voice to be heard, a part in the song. The hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled, for young and for old, the right to belong. For everyone born, a place at the table, to live without fear, and simply to be, to work, to speak out, to witness and worship, for everyone born, the right to be free!

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (Prayers for Inclusion and Diversity- Rupert Bristow)

Generous God, we love to receive. Help us to love to give too. May our expereince of receiving good things, the gift of life, the gift of grace, the gift of your creation, transform our lives. And may that lead us to a desire to give to others around us the gifts of listening, learning, loving. Above all, help us to receive and give, in equal measure, the hope that your Son showed us. Amen.

#589 The Church of Christ, in Every Age — WAREHAM

BENEDICTION

Go into the world and fulfill your lives. Challenge one another so each of you may grow in wisdom. Seek to be kind to one another so each of you may grow in love with God, love for yourself and your neighbor. Hold one another in your hearts so when we meet you will always find a friend. Allow God, the source of our lives to hold and keep you now and forever. Amen.

BENEDICTION RESPONSE

A Clare Benediction — John Rutter May the Lord show his mercy upon you; may the light of his presence be your guide: may he guard you and uphold you; may his spirit be ever be your side. When you sleep, may his angels watch over you; when you wake, may he fill you with his grace: may you love him and serve him all your days, then in heaven may you see his face.
