CUMULUS
STUDIO architecture & design
Cumulus Studio Cumulus Studio is a collaboration between two of Tasmania’s most successful emerging architects, Peter Walker and Todd Henderson. The studio formed out of a desire to investigate ideas collaboratively and an understanding that great ideas are developed through sharing and workshopping with others. From the Latin word for ‘heap’ or ‘pile’, Cumulus believe that through working together a critical mass of ideas can be accumulated quickly - forming idea clouds. These ideas can take on any size or form and be manipulated to suit conditions.

Capacity Cumulus Studio’s team of 10 designers includes 5 registered architects making us one of the larger practices in the state. Cumulus has offices in both Launceston and Hobart however we run the practice as one combined studio, allocating staff to projects across the state as required. This not only gives us flexibility in the size and scope of work we undertake but also allows us to utilise additional staff and resources to workshop design ideas, review projects for quality assurance and provide contingency backup planning. Although the practice is only young, we are already working on a number of high profile projects (refer to our office profile for detail) most of which have been won through submissions, demonstrating our ability to understand our client’s requirements and satisfy their due diligence process around project delivery and control of risk. Our commercial clients include: ww ww ww ww
The Federal Group (Saffire) Simon Currant (Pumphouse Point Trust) Josef Chromy Group Brown Brothers (Devils Corner Wines)
ww ww ww ww ww
University of Tasmania Australian Maritime College Launceston City Council Australian Antarctic Division Lady Gowrie Tasmania
A variety of different design, documentation and presentation tools are used by the studio to model and test all projects, ranging from pencil sketches and physical models through to industry standard IFC compliant BIM (Building Information Model) software utilising the 3d environment to streamline project documentation. High end presentation software can also be utilised for client and stakeholder submissions.

CUMULUS
STUDIO architecture & design
Working with Us Cumulus Studio is interested in a collaborative process in which many ideas are considered during the design. Collaboration is more often discussed than it is practised. It is our experience that, like a good conversation or delicious recipe, the result of mixing good ingredients is often greater than any one of the individual components. These components, gathered through discussion and workshopping ideas, include inputs such as budget, program, site, the environment, marketing & brand advice, specialist information, feasibility, people, financial return, user requirements and time-frame. During this process Cumulus also examines how to value add to the project by interrogating the brief, analysing precedents and looking for efficiencies and value for money. All of these ingredients are then refined into a design while strategically working through issues with the client and relevant stake-holders.
Design Experience Cumulus Studio builds on the combined experience of over 30 years in the Architecture and Design industry. Both directors, Peter Walker and Todd Henderson, have an extensive portfolio of built projects. Between them, Peter and Todd have worked on a number of Tasmania’s most recognisable and successful projects. The following selection of work demonstrates significant combined experience in a wide range of projects with varying public exposure, budgets, scales, agendas and time-frames. Cumulus Studio does not subscribe to the idea of developing a particular stylistic approach. Instead, we believe each work should reflect the unique aspects of the project and engage with different forms, materials & spatial organisations which originate from ideas developed through analysis of the specific project and place. Cumulus recognises the critical importance of brand and consumer experience for commercial tourism projects. We work closely with our clients in conjunction with brand & marketing consultants to clearly understand the targeted users for the building and build an experience that accentuates the brand message. This connection between brand experience and our approach to architecture was recently recognised with the award for Commercial Architecture presented to Cumulus at the Tasmanian Architecture Awards for our work with Willie Smith’s Cider at the Apple Shed.

Willie Smith’s CUMULUS
STUDIO architecture & design
CIDER HOUSE, TASTING BAR & CAFE, HUONVILLE Completed: 2013/ Budget: $350K Architects: Cumulus Studio (in collaboration with Futago) The project involved the conversion of an old timber apple packing shed into the home of Willie Smith’s Cider - http://williesmiths.com.au/. “Apple Shed” as it is now known, was envisaged not only as a cider house & tasting bar, but also to be an expression of the revitalisation of the Huon Valley and a rediscovery of the valley’s apple heritage. Through some simple architectural interventions - removing all of the internal walls and clutter that had built up over the years, introduction of natural light, refurbishing the industrial sliding doors and insertion of a new bar / kitchen - the original Apple Museum has been transformed into a timber shed again which has become an active social hub for the local community. Working in conjunction with Futago and our client, all of the previous memorabilia, pieces of equipment, displays and products were sorted and catalogued and an interpretation story developed. This was then presented in an informal interpretation which revolves around the new tasting bar. The project won the Tasmanian Commercial Architecture Award, 2014

15 / Love House CUMULUS
STUDIO architecture & design
PRIVATE RESIDENCE, LAUNCESTON Completed: 2013/ Budget: $Undisclosed Architects: Cumulus Studio The 15/Love House evolved from the clients desire for a home where living could happen both indoors and out and where socializing could be impromptu. By cutting away the central mass of the house a courtyard was formed, not only allowing the sun to penetrate deep into the internal living spaces. But, more importantly provide opportunities for the house to grow seamlessly and allow family life to interact. The first floor level is not immediately evident, only after you enter does its existence become clear via important visual connections achieved through the use of voids. The house consists of a subdued material palette and simple detailing, it does not announce the involvement of an architect but subtly whispers it instead. Organised around the idea of ‘Served and Servant space’ the non-habitable areas are subservient to the habitable spaces allowing the living areas to connect with both the courtyard and rear garden and to take full advantage of access to sun. The project won the Tasmanian Residential Architecture Award, 2014

ACCOMMODATION LODGE, LAKE ST CLAIR Completed: 2015 / Budget: $Undisclosed Architects - Cumulus Studio This project involves the refurbishment and adaptive reuse of Pumphouse Point into a wilderness retreat comprised of self-contained guest accommodation and communal lounge areas. Originally constructed as part of the Hydro Electric scheme the two existing heritage listed art deco buildings - The Pumphouse and The Shorehouse - had been unoccupied for over twenty years before works began. New guest suites have been constructed within the existing building envelopes. From inception we envisaged that the Pumphouse redevelopment should encapsulate rugged simplicity and unrefined comfort. In keeping with best heritage practice and the values of the World Heritage Site in which it is located, the design is focused on environmental stewardship, sustainability and minimal site impact.

MIXED RETAIL AND OFFICE SPACE, LAUNCESTON CBD Completed: Under Construction / Budget: $undisclosed Clients: Josef Chromy Group This project involves the conversion of existing warehouses in Launceston’s CBD into new office and retail spaces. Constructed in 1909 the building was original designed as a two storey motor garage and has had a number of uses since including a transport depot. Our client’s brief was to provide options for single or multiple tenancies on the ground floor with a office tenancies on the second. Key considerations include the provision of natural light, acoustic separation between tenancies and from street noise, and creation of a new shop fronts at street level. The shop fronts were seen as simple new insertions within the existing facade and particular consideration was given to the scale and pattern of the surrounding street context.

NORTH BANK MASTER PLAN, LAUNCESTON Undertaken: 2012-2013 / Budget: $6.5M Project Team - Cumulus Studio + Oculus The project initiated by the Launceston City Council shifts the city’s focus back towards the Tamar River. Both community and council recognise that a strong connection to the Tamar River is an important element in the vitality of Launceston’s Inner City areas and previously under-utilised areas of the riverfront are increasingly being re-invigorated by private and public development. The North Bank site has historically been cut off visually and physically from the public by flood levees and industrial zoning. The master plan offers the opportunity to transform the dislocated site into a place that connects and engages people. The master plan outlines strategic principles and a vision that provides clear direction to the community, stakeholders and investors. It particularly focuses on providing an important recreational space within the city for all age groups and recognises play space as a vital part of social inclusion and long term health & wellbeing.

INTEGRATED CHILD & FAMILY CENTRE, SOUTH HOBART Under development: 2015 / Budget: $Undisclosed Architects - Cumulus Studio Due to the growth of the organisation Lady Gowrie, Tasmania required a new site to develop an intergrated child and family support and training centre. The design proposal is the culmination of a number of workshop sessions with the client in which we examined a variety of options to develop existing warehouse buildings in South Hobart. A new three storey building acts as an entry / reception to the centre for clients and visitors. In keeping with Lady Gowrie’s ethos of using natural materials the building has been clad in timber and is designed to reference a series of stacked timber blocks. By placing the blocks in a ‘Jenga’ like arrangement it is hoped that the building will have an element of playfulness appealing to the centre’s primary user - the children - while still fitting comfortably into the existing residential South Hobart context. Internally, the spaces are designed to enhance the integrated childcare / training aspects of the centre with a large degree of transparency between play spaces, training rooms, and resource areas. This allows passive observation to occur, so that a learning environment is created for both children and the adults alike.

Working with the company’s brand and marketing team, a design was formulated around the essence of the brand and the desired consumer experience. The building was enclosed by a creased black skin much like a unfolded premium beer carton. Contrasting this, red brick (a cost effective building material resonant of the heritage of the site) was used on the ground surface to allude to the working class providence of the beer and direct circulation through the site. Central to the design was the tasting bar that formed the heart of the project, the view from which was directed back to the original brewhouse.

COMMUNITY SPORTS FACILITY, GLENORCHY Under development: 2014 / Budget: $Undisclosed Architects - Cumulus Studio Cumulus were commissioned by the Glenorchy City Council to develop a design for new clubrooms and sports facilities for the Glenorchy Football Club. The brief required that the design consider not only the strong identity of the local club but also the use of the building by the local community and the relocation of the Migrant Resource Centre. In response we proposed that the ground floor of the building be largely transparent and highly permeable with the community activities collected around a new public lounge room which would become the social hub of the project. In contrast the upper levels - which mostly consisted of club activities - were wrapped in a facade derived from an abstracted image of the team in the club colours, standing arm in arm before a game. In this way, the building clearly identified its allegiance and lent psychological support to the local team during the battle taking place on the football ground.

AQUATIC CENTRE, GYMNASIUM & SPORTS GROUNDS, SYDNEY Concept Only: 2014 / Budget: $50M Architects - Cumulus Studio This proposal for an aquatic centre as part of the Green Square redevelopment project in Sydney, was envisaged as the displaced water resulting from a new raised outdoor pool. Conceptually, the infinite edge of the beach edge is wrapped over the urban indoor pool with water displaced (through the pools use) overflowing and running down the side of the building creating the enclosure for the spaces underneath. The theatrical and social nature of bathing is explored by elevating the outdoor pool and placing it in the prime position on the site with views to the boulevards and public spaces of Green Square. This creates a completely unique bathing experience (evocative of the urban roof bar, regional community pools, and the Bondi Beach’s baths) and provides the users with a new perspective on public life in the city.

PUBLIC ART PROPOSAL, SYDNEY Concept Only: Not Built Architects - Cumulus Studio in collaboration with Futago Wandering George street, just heading from A to B, a small piece of lush green ground catches the eye. As though some movement of the ground underneath had cleaved two steep-sided buildings apart, Abercrombie Lane is the lush fissure that remains. In the tearing apart, it is almost as though a piece of original ground is revealed - a tiny sliver of riverbank perhaps heading to a stream that is no more. This public artwork proposed to reclad the ground of a narrow, sloping lane off George Street with artificial turf. The turf undulated as it touched the buildings on either side, as if it might represent the movement of water, draining down the river bank. Originally a source of fresh water for Sydney, the Tank Stream is an invisible key to the city’s settlement. Abercrombie Lane leads down to Tank Stream Way, which is part of the line of the watercourse that Sydney was built around. While the stream itself is hidden in tunnels under the pavements and buildings, the slope of Abercrombie Lane is a place where it is still possible to read the original topography of the riverbank.

VISITOR & TASTING CENTRE, BOTHWELL Completed: 2008 / Budget: $0.8M Design & Project Architect - Peter Walker (at Morris-Nunn + Associates) This project, located on a remote site in central Tasmania, involved the restoration and redevelopment of the heritage listed Nant Flour Mill as a premium whisky distillery and private tasting lounge. Despite a small budget for building work it was important that the authenticity of the existing building was retained and that the new tasting lounge deliberately contrast this through form and material use - as per the best practice principles of the Burra Charter. This new social space connects the project back to the unique highland pastoral landscape to which the mill owes its origin and which continues to provide the barley for Nant’s whisky.

LUXURY TOURIST RESORT & DAY SPA Completed: 2010 / Budget $38M Design & Project Architect - Peter Walker (at Circa Morris-Nunn Walker) The client’s brief required an iconic project that would become a destination in its own right. The 20-suite resort is set in what is predominantly a natural coastal environment so the project’s visual impact on the surrounding landscape was a critical consideration. The building shapes were envisaged to deal with these issues and also to provide an iconic form that would be immediately recognisable and associated with the site and client. Furthermore a construction system of repeated (rationalised) prefabricated elements was derived to allow the organic building shapes to be constructed in a remote location. A critical part of the design was the inclusion of a Day Spa and Gymnasium ,which was to be operated independently to the hotel and had its own particular functional and design requirements. Working collaboratively with a specialist consultant, the design team created a spa that added to the relaxed and indulgent ambiance of the hotel providing massage, health treatment, steam & hydrotherapy in a private and secure atmosphere. The building has gone on to win numerous national and international design awards, most recently Best Overall Boutique Hotel in the World at the prestigious World Boutique Hotel Awards 2014 in London.

FUNCTION CENTRE & RESTAURANT, RELBIA Completed: 2011 / Budget: $4M Project Architect - Todd Henderson (at Birrelli Architects) The Josef Chromy function centre is an extension to the existing cellar door and cafe located at Relbia, Northern Tasmania. The original homestead remains as the ‘face’ of the winery, the expansion in fact only becoming visible as one moves around the building or if viewed from the west. There is a clear distinction between old and new, with the new work recognisable as distinct from the historical style of the existing building. Essentially, the new space provides a highly serviced, multipurpose flexible space that can be used for functions, performances or conferences and extends the capacity of the existing cafe/ restaurant. Oversized sliding windows accentuate the connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape of vineyard, mountains and clear skies. The southern end of the building opens up to a manicured grass bank that is used for sunday afternoon concerts. It was important the project was completed for the summer tourism wedding season and although numerous client requested design changes were made through the construction process these were managed within the time-frame and cost controlled in conjunction with the building contractor.

The study examined how to deal with the increasing demand for departures and arrivals by sea as well as place the development within the context of the recently completed Sullivans’s Cove Master-plan. The resulting design envisages the redevelopment as a new southern gateway to provide a dedicated cruise terminal for passenger arrivals (currently approx 75,000 visitors a year over the peak season) as well as a logistics base for Antarctic & Southern Ocean operations.

CONSERVATION & ADAPTATION, HOBART Completed: Under construction/ Budget: $2.8M Project Team- Cumulus / Project Architect: Peter Walker Left vacant and under-utilised for 15 years, Domain House is currently in a poor state of disrepair and decay. The project scope involves investigatory & conservation works, as well as exploring options for future alterations or additions, and establishing the parameters for these. The project objective is to not only restore the building to working order, but to reinstate the 1850’s building as one of the University’s most heralded public and ceremonial spaces. The scope of works involves understanding the complex history of the site as well as interpreting the recently proposed Domain Campus Urban Design Framework. The project required the development of a localised strategy that was consistent with the University’s future growth plan while appropriately responding to the cultural heritage of the site.
