ISSUE 3 SUMMER 2013

After last year’s success on the roof of the Printworks, this year is looking to be even bigger and better. High up on the roof, there is activity of a green fingered nature. A concept which started last Summer 2012 of growing organic vegetables, which are available for tenants to use in their dishes, Henry J Bean’s used the mint in their Mojitos. The crop was so good last year they were able to feed entrants for the Manchester Sleep out which is held annually, in association with Manchester Cathedral and the Booth Centre, to raise awareness and money to work with the homeless living on the city streets. Henry J Bean’s made a delicious soup using the fine ingredients which received an overwhelming thumbs up. This year there are 10 boxes of vegetables planted,

all growing really well, despite the miserable Summer weather. With the few days of glorious sunshine, plus all the rain recently, it is obviously a perfect combination and environment up there. The crops this year include carrots, peas, rhubarb, leeks, chilies, sweetcorn, pumpkin, sage, mint and rosemary. It is expected this year’s crop will be in abundance, so again the Printworks will be looking to support a charitable cause that could benefit from the vegetables grown. They are asking if you know of any local charity that could make good use of these vegetables to please let them know. You can also post your suggestions on Twitter and they can add your suggestion to their list. Post your suggestions on Twitter @The_Printworks and hashtag #rooftopgarden

Printworks Unsigned winners The eight finalists from the open auditions of the Printworks Unsigned competition took to the stage on the 8 April 2013, each hoping to win the prestigious first prize. The winner of the 1st prize ‘The Morgans’, from Wythenshawe walked away with the £250 cash prize and a recording session to produce their own E.P. The Morgans. Fred Booth, the Printworks Director, commented, “We are delighted for the Morgans, they did an incredible performance and deserved to be crowned winners. The second place contestant Georgia Brown proved a worthy contender and at only 14 years’ old we’re sure she will go on to amazing things. Celebrity judge Ashley Taylor Dawson, (Darren Osborne in Hollyoaks), and former member of pop band Allstars in 2001, who now also produces music himself stated, “I was impressed by the Printworks Unsigned, I’ve had a fantastic day and it was a lot harder to judge than I thought it would be. It was uplifting to see the Manchester talent in the competition and nice to seem someone is backing future musicians. I really think the winners of the competition, the Morgans, will go onto great things”.

Redhead Day UK The Printworks are proud to announce the first ever Redhead Day UK 2013. On Saturday 29th June, 2013 the Prinworks will be filled with redheads, ranging from strawberry blonde to Auburn to 100% ginger. Even the mere individuals without a trrace of red in their genes are invited. So, whether you have red hair, or just love red hair, join others to celebrate what it means to be a redhead and take part in the first ever event here in the UK for a fun filled, exciting day. Help turn the Printworks RED. Redheads are thought to make up only 2% of the world’s population. The percentage gathered in the Printworks is guaranteed to be far higher on the 29 June 2013, why not join in and be included in the statistics on this first ever Redhead Day Event in the UK. You may wonder how and who every thought up the idea of gathering together these specific red-headed individuals. The first redhead gathering came about by accident in 2005 when a local Dutch painter was recruiting 15 gingerhaired models for a painting. When he received 10 times the number of responses he decided to amass them all for a photo

shoot. The following year the numbers almost doubled, hence the start of Redhead Day. The Printworks has a day planned that you will remember for a long time. With appearances from redhead entertainers, including musicians, personalities, comedians. With special offers for redheads from the Printworks, photo opportunities and product and service demonstrations suitable for redheads. The day will also include a discussion, led by the maker of the documentary “Being Ginger”, Scott Harris, on the love of redheads. Waxy O’Connor’s will also have a range of Redhead inspired cocktails on offer, including ‘Flaming Redhead’, ‘Red Rocket’, and a non-alcoholic option a refreshing ‘Nash’s Red Lemonade’. Get access to special offers by registering for you free ticket (www.redheadday.co.uk), including discounts on Redhead Day UK t-shirts, accommodation at the Park Inn Hotel and venues within the Printworks. Work is usually a necessity for most people, but how many truly enjoy what they do for a living? I immediately get the impression from speaking to Jack Barton, Conference and Events CoOrdinator at the ODEON that he loves his job. Jack has worked at the ODEON for six years, three of these spent as a part-timer whilst still at University. During the first three years he undertook various jobs, including cashier, delivery duties, stock control, in fact anything that was available. He now holds the full-time post of Conference and Events Co-Ordinator. It would be a nice thought to think that Jack spends his working day watching all the new releases, but sadly not. His job is not a typical 9-5 working day,. His primary duty is to organise and co-ordinate conferences for external clients, who hire out the Auditorium for various reasons, such as presentations and private screenings of up-coming film releases. “Its my obligation to make clients feel comfortable and look after them throughout the day. I get the chance to meet many interesting people, having worked with the likes of Apple, Microsoft, The Co-operative and Manchester United.” I asked Jack if he meets many celebrities. He said, “we occasionally have VIP’s onsite to promote their new movie with advanced screenings and Questions and Answers afterwards.” He mentioned that he had recently met ‘Women in Black’ Director, James Watkins, and also gave Gareth Evans, Director of ‘The Raid’ a tour around the ODEON. The biggest star jack has met is Kevin Smith when he attended to promote ‘Red State’. Jack said, “He sold out our biggest screen of 500 seats through his Twitter feed”. I asked Jack if he gets to view the new films first? Jack says, “the technicians get that luxury as they have to check each film as they come in.

Jack talked about the newly refurbished Gallery which they are all excited about, I must admit it looks amazing, I know where I will be heading for in the future when I next visit the ODEON for the evening. He explained that the potential is immense for conferences, events and presentations. We also discussed the ability to screen live feeds of opera, plays, sporting events and concerts in 2D and 3D. Jack says, “It gives the people of Manchester the chance to virtually sit with the audience at the Royal Opera House and National Theatre, without having to incorporate a costly trip to London.” On the 18 June 2013, The British Museum will be doing a live tour of Pompeii. It is a world premiere, the first live cinema event produced by a museum. There will also be a special morning showing for shcools on 19th June 2013 as the film can be recorded and cut down to an hour long. One of the most popular satellite feeds at the moment is ‘The Audience’ with Helen Mirren. “In fact”, says Jack, “we have had to programme two encore screenings to cope with demand. The most popular satellite feeds to date, however, was Danny Boyles’ ‘Frankenstein’, so popular we had to cancel regular shows to fit it in”. On a personal note, I asked Jack to tell me more about the football team he is involved with. “It all started when I was a pupil in Lancaster and we started a football team called ‘AFC Pandas’ - the name came about due to a photograph from a school trip when a friend sat under a panda”, says Jack. Not a real panda, obviously! They are now called the ‘Inter Pandas’, a play on Inter Milan. The team who includes himself, Chris Hopkins from the Printworks, some of the Managers at the ODEON and also some of Jack’s original friends from Lancaster who now work and live in Manchester. They play twice a week, Tuesday against the old

Conference Manager’s team and a 6-a-side league on a Sunday at Platt Fields Park. So are you good, I asked? “Still waiting to get to full fitness”, Jack replied. So guess Inter Milan are safe at the moment. After taking me on an interesting tour of the ODEON, including where the Flashbacks and IMAX films are shown and behind the scenes peek of how it all operates, also the new refurbed Gallery suite. I have to say that Jack knows his technical stuff, both old and new, and it goes without doubt that he could probably talk to you about it for as long as you could spare the time to listen. He also speaks very highly about all the staff at the ODEON, saying, “the staff are great here and everyone connects really well”. You can see that Jack is very much at home at the ODEON and it is obviously a place he loves to be. He has learned on the job, which always gains respect from your peers, working his way up from a part-timer as a student and gaining experience in all the different aspects of the job along the way to a full time and professional Conference and Events Co-Ordinator at one of the biggest IMAX cinema complex outside London. Not bad at 24 years’ old!

Lloyds No. 1 have much to offer, in fact far too much to mention. The piece de resistance though is their Real Ales, with six pumps all year round changed regularly every few days.

Every quarter they play host to a Real Ale Festival, the last one held in April. Inviting three different brewers to talk about their brews which feature 50 international Real Ales from around Britain and Northern Ireland, with a range of tastes, strengths and styles. Real Ales come in many flavours from golden ales, bitters, porters and stouts and specialty beers, all of which you will find at Lloyds No. 1 at the Printworks. Plus it is not just Ales on the menu, there are also plenty of other choices, including ciders and perry, such as Kopparberg from Sweden, alongside traditional English and Irish favourites. But don’t think that Lloyds insist you drink their ales, they are also quite happy to serve you with delicious Italian Lavazza filter coffee, freshly brewed specially for a time when you want to relax and enjoy. At the beginning of the year Lloyds No. 1 introduced their ‘Most Wanted’ offer which has proved so successful it

is still going strong. The offer is available between Monday to Wednesday nights from 8.00p.m. with selected drinks costing only £1.50. Certainly an offer not to be ignored. Why not take advantage of an early weekend offer with ‘Fish Friday’. A Club Deal offering freshly hand battered cod and chip with peas, including a soft drink, all for £4.99, or choose an alcoholic drink with the meal deal and pay just £5.99. Not to be left out on the Summer cocktail craze that is so prominent at the Printworks at the moment, Waxy’s, just to be a bit different, have added a little Irish twist to their cocktail menu, very much themed to fit their Irish personality. For example, at £6.99 each you can try a Wild Irish Rose, a Fiona MacCool, or maybe a Blonde Bobbie, but whichever you choose you will not to be disappointed. With ingredients like Baileys, Jamesons, Mickey Finns Apple Whiskey, I am sure you get the gist that these are no ordinary cocktails. A selection of shots are also featured on the new menu, and again include some familiar Irish ingredients. Just £3.50 each and with names like, Squashed Frog, Broken Down Cart, Irish Pirate, Irish Potato and Baby Guinness and the Pickleback you want to try them for curiosity alone. You already know they will provide you with a quality drink let alone an Irish kick. So if you are looking for a true Irish atmospheric get together, guaranteed good food with traditional ingredients to share as you catch up with mates, or experience a cheeky twist on a cocktail or two, then head your way to Waxy O’Connor’s.

Boomin Bands Hard Rock Rising 2013 – the GLOBAL Battle of the Bands competition was a great success for Manchester, with an impressively high standard of bands making it through to the live final which took place on 28th March. Wigan

Check out www.hardrock.com/manchester for event listings and further information.

In a special one off intimate concert organized for 400 lucky Real Radio listeners, boy band Blue wowed a packed crowd at Hard Rock Cafe Manchester performing a selection of their greatest hits. Selling over 15

million albums worldwide, the pop favourites have seen huge come back success after going on tour with ‘The Big Reunion’ earlier this year and are currently touring their sell out tour.

ALL RISE for BLUE

Hard Rock is 42! No one had ever done anything like it – a Rock ‘n’ Roll restaurant. And back in 1971, our first landlord in London thought it so improbable that he’d only give our shaggy-haired founders a three month lease. That was 42 years ago. But from day one, we were serious about serving fresh, handmade, classic American cooking with a Southern flair that couldn’t help but reflect co-founder Isaac Tigrett’s Tennessee roots. Even as our menu expands to encompass the best of local cuisines around

the World, serving up the good stuff is still and forever our gig. To celebrate Founders’ Day, on Friday 14th June, we’re offering the first 71 people through our doors a burger for just 42 pence, it’s our way of saying thank you for all your support over the years. And throughout June, tweet @hardrockcafemcr #nomnom with a photo of yourself eating a burger at Hard Rock Cafe Manchester for your chance to win a meal for two at the cafe when you next visit!

3 1 0 2 Y L U J H T 7 2 Y A D R SATU It would be difficult to top the success of The Printworks Street Dancer competition last year, but this year is already set to look even bigger and better. With acts from all over the country arriving in Manchester to battle it for the crown of Street Dancer 2013 champions, the competition has never looked fiercer. The Street Dancer 2013 Open Auditions will be held on Saturday 27th July 2013 at The Printworks, with 8 acts going through to the final on the 4th August. All you need is the passion to dance and the style to impress our esteemed panel of industry judges. The competition is open to all dancers; solos, duos and crews and the open auditions kick off at 1.00pm with registration from midday. The top 8 acts that go through will have their auditions uploaded onto www. theprintworks.com for online voting for one week. The votes cast on our website will count for 25% of the

judge’s decision during the Grand Final, where we will be joined by a special celebrity judge. Last year we were joined by “Sky 1’s Got To Dance” finalist Turbo! The winner of the final will take home the first prize of £1000, the Street Dancer 2013 trophy and the opportunity to perform at the Manchester Christmas lights Switch On event in Albert Square. Last year our winners ‘Avenue’ shared the stage with The Wanted and Misha B, performing in front of 20,000 people! To secure your place in the live auditions, simply email info@theprintworks.com. All performances must be no more than 4 minutes and tracks should be brought on a cd and tested before. Stop the press... The Printworks has now been a hive of entertainment since the year 2000. Although the outside reflects the old magnificent structure of the former printing press factory and offices constructed in 1929, the inside has been transformed into a unique complex where all ages can enjoy almost any kind of cuisine, nighclubbing and entertainment in a safe and relaxed atmosphere. There is still some indication of pre-Printworks era on the inside with some of the original features and remnants of the former newspaper office still very much intact. The former building which lay unused and derelict for over a decade and the surrounding site was bought in 1997 by Don and Roy Richardson from Shudehill Developments, a joint venture by Co-operative Wholesale Society and Co-operative Insurance Society, who owned some of the property and land adjacent to the building for £10 million. It was at this point renamed the Printworks, which reflects its past history and underwent a conversion to transform it into the entertainment venue it is today. Around eight million people now visit the Printworks every year to enjoy the great selection of eateries, cinema with the biggest IMAX screen outside London and even a state-of-the-art gym with swimming pool. ‘Stop the press’ was a frequently used expression by newspaper publishers over the years to change the content of an issue just before, or during its printing, due to the arrival of a story of such magnitude that presses had to be stopped immediately.

In the days of Kemsley House, Thompson House and then lastly named Maxwell House, newspapers were printed on machinery called printing presses. The editors and print setters would design the layout for the day’s newspapers and set the machine rolling to actually print the paper. If a ‘breaking news’ story came in and couldn’t wait until the next day’s newspaper then the press would have to be stopped quickly to make the changes. Hence, ‘Stop the press’. These days the expression is mainly used to be sarcastic. You can only imagine how many times this statement was used throughout the years, spanning from 1929 up to its final closure by Robert Maxwell in 1986 as a newspaper printing house. Historical events and stories, giving the staff jaw dropping first hand news during the course of preparing some of the front page headlines each and every day. Papers which included The Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, Daily Sketch, Evening Chronicle, The Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror. There will be many who still remember some of the historical or ground breaking news stories. A group of former employees who formed the Withy Grove Fellowship, with a membership of 300, will certainly remember one or two, some of which will still be clear in their minds today. The Fellowship formed in the mid 1980’s when a group of former employees decided to get together to keep the memories and history of the building and industry alive. The Fellowship has grown in numbers

since then and still increasing today with men and women who worked in all areas within that industry. I asked some of the members of the Fellowship at their May meeting which headlines stood out in their minds during their working life in the newspaper industry. As you would probably imagine tragedy and grief always seem to dominate emotions over joyous events, even more so when you are the first recipient of that breaking news story. So it’s no surprise that the headlines remembered mostly by the former workers would be the saddest ones. One of the main shock headline stories remembered by the Fellowship group when I spoke to them, and not surprising really, was undoubtedly the Munich Air Disaster on the 6 February 1957. Not only was it a shocking tragedy, but also so close to home, involving the great team of local young talented footballers of Manchester United. A total of 23 people lost their lives on the disastrous flight back from Munich, including players, journalists, a travel agent, pilot, co-pilot and also a fan. Ted Curly, former picture maker, said, “something like this just hits you right in the gut - it was terrible”. Incredibly, on 19 February 1957 a makeshift squad of 11 United players was formed to take on Sheffield Wednesday in an emotional FA Cup fifth-round tie and actually won 3-0. June Carr, receptionist, clearly remembers the long, ongoing horror of the Moors Murders. June stated, “It had a big impact, not only on myself, but on everyone who worked here. I

Emma Fox Manchester Guided Tours u

Manchester history tours

remember everyone looking grey and nobody speaking, it was an awful time”. It must be very hard and quite a traumatic job reporting and having first hand information on such brutality and cruelty. Unfortunately the Moors Murders have been a subject that has lasted over so many years and still with some issues never laid to rest even today. One thing June does remember that is neither tragedy or sad was the start of the ‘page three models’. She says, “I remember coming into work and seeing two almost identical page three proofs, one topless and then one for the same paper but with the model wearing a bikini top. When I questioned why this was, I was told that one edition was for here and one for Ireland. Ireland was not allowed

at that time to show topless models”. It is now felt by many, especially with women now taking on some of the jobs previously only thought to be ‘a man’s job’ and ‘equal opportunities’ that newspapers should promote positive role models to inspire girls and stop treating women as objects. It would be impossible to even try to list the headline stories covering all these years, but I bet the workers in the newspaper industry always went home after work with an interesting story to tell. They say that history repeats itself, a statement proved when you see some of the recent news stories today. Margaret Thatcher for example, first lady Prime Minister love or hate her she still made the front page just recently when she passed away; The

first landing on the moon - today you can reserve your place ready to be amongst the first non-astronauts to travel into space; The marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana - this one has been regurgitated over the years, not only in the sad and tragic death of Princess Diana, but the controversial partnership of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles, then the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, with Kate now wearing Princess Diana’s engagement ring. There will always be ‘breaking news’ whether joyous, sad, tragic, political and sometimes sickening and the newspapers will continue to report these headline stories to keep the general public in touch. Although, to ‘Stop the press’ these days is a far easier, but nevertheless still a costly one.

The Printworks are pleased to introduce Manchester Guided Tours and open their doors to Manchester history enthusiasts, giving them chance to explore both the heritage and history of the grand building as it stands now and pre-Kelmsley House and the surrounding area. You will get the chance to view original memorabilia and features of the building, experience some behind the scenes activity and many other exciting information along the way. Emma Fox, professional Green Badge Guide, registered with the Institute of Tourist Guiding, will be running the next Printworks Tour on Sunday, 16 June 2013, at 11.00 am until 1.00 pm. A customer decribed the, “as informative and fun”. We discuss the story of the newspaper print days, some of the original features of the building and about the buildings that stood on the site before the Printworks

even existed and much more. It is not just an entertainment centre, it has a wealth of fascinating heritage - I am learning myself all the time more and more information leading to some fascinating stories”. The Tour begins outside Cafe Rouge, continues through the Printworks complex, stopping off at the famous Hard Rock Cafe with its walls crammed with memorabilia. Also included, amongst other things, is a tour behind the scenes of the Odeon Cinema, with a visit to the IMAX projector room, the largest IMAX Screen outside London. The cost of the tour is £7/ £6 concessions and lasts approximately two hours.
