The Marriage of Figaro by W. A. Mozart

Friday, October 21, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, October 23, 2 p.m. Tickets start at $14 Mozart’s charming classic about sex, love, intrigue, and marriage has delighted audiences since its scandalous premiere in 1786. Based on a play by Pierre Beaumarchais, this four-act opera buffa is a continuation of the story that began in The Barber of Seville. Figaro is now on the eve of his marriage, but the Count wants the favors of his beautiful wife-to-be, Susanna. Will the servants succeed in tricking their master into falling in love all over again with the Countess, and win the chance to wed? Complex plotting, a sophisticated and intricate score, and timeless questions about marriage and fidelity make Figaro a cornerstone of the modern operatic repertoire.

Gianni Schicchi & Suor Angelica by Giacomo Puccini

Friday, March 16, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2 p.m. Tickets start at $14

/ CU Opera

Macky Auditorium Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica are two parts of a trilogy of one-act operas composed by Giacomo Puccini in 1917-18. Suor Angelica is a drama of desire set in a 17th century convent; Sister Angelica longs to reconnect with her noble family and make peace for her sins, but has hidden a terrible secret from the sisters with whom she lives. When her aunt comes to the convent, Angelica must face the truth of her past. By contrast, Gianni Schicchi is a farce based on an incident in Dante’s Divine Comedy. When Buoso Donati dies without leaving a will favorable to his relatives, they connive to inherit the property by deceiving the townspeople with the help of Gianni Schicchi, a newcomer to the town. Yet Schicchi has plans of his own regarding his daughter’s marriage and Buoso’s wealth. These two operas show the breadth of Puccini’s work, from his haunting melodic talent to his comic skill.

Rossini’s La cambiale di matrimonio In collaboration with Italy’s Piccolo Festival

Thursday, April 26, 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2 p.m. Tickets start at $16 Music Theatre

La cambiale will be performed by a combination of CU-Boulder students and professional Italian singers in conjunction with the Piccolo Festival Friuli Venezia Giulia. (The students will be reprising their roles from an August 2011 production of the same one-act as part of the Piccolo Festival in the Friuli region of Italy.) It will be preceded by an original operatic adaptation penned by Patrick Mason, il Teatro del Friuli, a farcical look at the backstage life of operatic production.

/ CU Opera

Rossini’s first professional opera, La cambiale di matrimonio debuted in 1810, and heralded the arrival of a great operatic talent. (The title translates as The Marriage Contract.) In this operatic farce, true love is threatened when a visiting businessman attempts to win himself a wife as part of a contract with a miserly merchant. The merchant’s daughter wants to marry for love, and the resulting negotiations lead to comic complications.
