Cafe La Rue Brings La Jollan’s Back to La Valencia

EATING OUT |food & drink

Changing of the Guard La Jollans are very proud of their quaint, bustling little town by the sea and change is not always met with enthusiasm as management at La Valencia knows. In mid-2013, a mid-westerner from Detroit was handed the reigns of The La Valencia Hotel’s culinary renovation. The renovations were both conceptual and physical but award-winning, molecular gastronomy chef, Daniel Barron, was excited for the challenge. As part of his new position, Chef Daniel Barron was to oversee the renovation of all three food and beverage outlets; the Mediterranean Room, The Sala and The Whaling Bar and to rejuvenate the menu offerings for the famed landmark. The task of renovating an historical building in La Jolla can be a logistical and operational nightmare but once the plans were set in motion there was no turning back. The moment news of the closing of The Whaling Bar hit the streets, many community members were outraged. Since the 1950’s The Whaling Bar had long been recognized as a Prospect staple, the neighborhood watering hole for artists, writers and other creatives and of course, for visiting guests too. The dark, enveloping atmosphere of The Whaling Bar was replaced by a light, casual bistro concept that opens onto Prospect, luring in passersby to partake in cocktails and a jovial conversation at the bar or indulge in one of the flavorful, California style, farm to table creations from the Cafe La Rue kitchen. Chef Daniel Barron is best known for his mastery of molecular gastronomy, where his restaurant menus have been named as one of the best of the category alongside Chicago’s famed, Alinea. The menu at the new Cafe La Rue, though, takes on a much less structured feel to the food, less confined and restricted. Cafe La Rue is an experience that La Jolla has been lacking for a very long time. The staff in

the casual dining arm of the luxury hotel is friendly and strive to make La Rue a go-to choice for locals. The menu consists of incredibly flavorful indulgences like Brussel Sprouts and Pancetta, a Lamb Shank Pot Pie and a Smoked Cheddar Bratwurst stuffed with IPA cheese. Chef Daniel and his crew bring the artisanal skills of food preparation directly to the plate without pretension. After an invitation to interview the chef, he delighted me with a tour behind the scenes and it was pretty impressive. Chef’s pride lies in the bowels of the hotel which houses a curing closet and aging fridge. There is word that there is a super secret meat locker which is accessible only under the strict supervision of Chef Daniel who is the master key holder. Maybe next time, he will show it to us. ;-)

My Thoughts… The Whaling Bar was a landmark with plenty of history. I have been inside the new Cafe La Rue now several times and on occasion have heard people walk in surprised that The Whaling Bar is no longer; some are rather perturbed. These are my thoughts. If these anguished patrons had visited The Whaling Bar more often, perhaps there would have been no reason to close it down. I do remember The Whaling Bar but it was not a destination consideration for me. The Mediterranean Room had symbolized familial gatherings such as Mother’s Day brunch growing up in La Jolla. This is all very lovely and many people have cherished memories at the La Valencia and I look forward to the La V becoming an integral part of inviting the local community back through its doors. There is history here. A new facade does not erase that. Hopefully, with the welcoming of the new Pink Lady, management and the community will keep alive its rich history and allure while returning it to a vibrant spot for locals to frequent.
