Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool 16th October 2013 Make It in Manufacturing is a charitable, multi-platform campaign designed to create a pipeline of talent for the UK’s manufacturing industry. Delivered by The Manufacturing Institute, Make It engages teenagers and educators through a range of hands-on, practical events and shows first hand that modern manufacturing is a global enterprise that thrives on a culture of innovation, creativity and smart thinking. In partnership with businesses from across the UK, Make It’s flagship programme, the Make It Enterprising Challenge, invites local schools to compete against one another in a series of challenges designed to test their team working, creativity and enterprising skills. By highlighting the diverse range of interesting employment opportunities available in their local area, ‘Make It’ is challenging negative perceptions about the industry and driving talent towards companies throughout the supply chain.

Make It in Manufacturing Enterprising Challenge Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool
16th October 2013
Schools in Attendance Archbishop Blanch School Liverpool
About the day Eleven local schools from across Merseyside attended the challenge which took place at Aintree Racecourse. The materials used on the day were designed to specifically highlight Survitec as an advanced manufacturer of survival technology and to promote the range of interesting careers available across the group. At the start of the Challenge, each team, made up of eight Year 9 pupils, was tasked with setting up their own mini-manufacturing company and creating a rescue vehicle that could be sent into an array of disaster scenarios. There were seven key tasks to complete throughout the event, starting with each team member choosing an individual job role based on their skills, interests and abilities, and ending with the teams presenting their business plans in front of a panel of Survitec’s senior managers in a Dragon’s Den style business pitch. Along the way teams had to cross a logistics maze, design and build their prototype vehicles, produce finance plans, and develop a marketing strategy to sell their ideas. The day was facilitated by a range of Survitec’s personnel from across the UK and points were awarded throughout the various activities. Teams were scored on their team working abilities as well as their creativity, problem solving and their enterprising skills and qualities.
