Schmuck 2013

(see Saturday for more dates/timetable) Schmuck 2013 exhibition is the event this whole week revolves around. Jewellery designer, Bernhard Schobinger, hand chose the 58 artists that will be seen at the International Handwerksmesse during the Handwerk & Design Fair, the traditional site of exhibition. Each artist is showing a distinct and well developed style and trade, and although we sometimes need to explain ourselves in our field, these works have unarguably received the label 'jewellery'.

Schmucks' longstanding history also tells us that these pieces will soon become our future icons; at least, the shrines the pieces are presented in make us want to believe it so. The famous Herbert-Hoffman Prize will be awarded to one Schmuck artist at 17.00 on March 9.

Talente is about the appreciation of young (up until the age of 33) design talent. The show presents handpicked designers, not only from the jewellery world, but various other disciplines like glass and ceramics. It's the perfect place to see what’s new from your favourite up-and-coming contemporary jeweller and to get inspired! Contributing designers can only be selected once in their entire career, so now is their chance to shine.

Like each year, the winners of the Talente Prize 2013 will be awarded. See who they are on March 9 at 15.30.

17:00–19:00 From Brescia, Italy, Maurer Zilioli Contemporary Arts will be showcasing two artist/goldsmiths deemed legends of the field. The work of Bruno Martinazzi (IT) and Manfred Bischoff (DE) converge on grounds beyond that of noble material preference, but also through their shared geographical territory and subtle reference points.

Turin-born Martinazzi inherited a devotion to Italy’s visual history, while Bischoff’s references are chosen and interpreted more freely. Dr. Ellen Maurer-Zilioli, gallerist and president of MZ Contemporary Arts, comments on the pair: "For all this complex artistic directionality, what ultimately emerges into the focus of perception are idiosyncratic pieces of jewellery, bearing witness to an irresistibly fragile yet stunningly evident beauty that is on occasion presented with an absurd or ironic twist."

The exhibition will boast a perfectly digestible amount of work between the two artists. If you’re new to contemporary jewellery, be sure to stop here at the very least (!); it’s a prerequisite to what else is out there, a must see, contemporary jewellery 101, if you will.

And the best part is that the exhibition is hosted by the contemporary art gallery, Kunstbüro Reillplast, representing a school of young, but very able artists. CO is excited to see what kind of fresh fine-art eyeballs will land on this work consequently. Maurer-Zilioli always aims to bridge the gap between contemporary jewellery and contemporary art; after all, the gallery doubles as a Cultural Association aimed to do to just that, and we are oh- so thankful! Part of FRAME galleries, the large-scale project, Handshake, unites students and aspiring designers from New Zealand with their idols. Imagine getting to meet your jewellery hero and call them by their first name, let alone get to design a piece with them. A dream. They also produced a book publication where all of their pieces are shown and their stories told. CO is just as excited as the young designers must have been and is keen to see the results of this brave overseas endeavour. On Wednesday at 13.30 pm the curator will introduce us to the artists and heroes from which we hope to hear some more.

CO chose to write about Manon van Kouswijk’s delicate new work for our magazine’s first issue themed The Archetype.

Why? She has long been obsessed with everything that resembles the beaded necklace. Van Kouswijk has now found an almost prehistoric link to her long line of work to which she shows a very personal and rooted connection. Amsterdam’s Gallery RA will present a great retrospective of her work, where her series of necklaces,'Perles d' Artistes,' especially ask to be held, worn and be perceived by other makers. Her series of brooches, “Ornamental Residue,” will also show a new direction taken by the artist.

Hannah Joris, Agnes Larsson, Mia Maljojoki, Mikiko Minewaki, Jorge Manilla, Ruudt Peters Text: Branching out from their online platform into the physical world, Jewellery Sessions 2013 have invited 17 contemporary jewellery artists to collaborate with a photographer of similar artistic visions, so that together they can work towards creating new photographic work. “The project is an artist initiative to investigate in and reflect on ‘crossover thinking’ in applied and visual arts.” CO really supports any kind of trans-disciplinary exploration, and so should you! THIS IS WHERE THEY MET will be represented by Stockholm’s Galerie Platina. Don’t miss the artist meeting at the Messe’s Schmuckbar, Saturday 11.00–15.00.

10:00–19:00 Galerie Wittenbrink’s newest location, FUENF HOEFE, is conveniently more connected to Munich’s art scene and aims to host the latest in contemporary art as well as works by modern masters. Positionen is on this year’s Schmuck agenda, but we can’t quite tell you much about it, because we haven’t heard a thing! Perhaps the mystery is an intentional one, a simple reflection of the obscure communication practices that sometimes coincide with the world of contemporary jewellery itself. Who and what should we expect to see?

Shari Pierce and Jorge Manilla together discuss unrequited love, violence, passion and human nature. We aren’t quite sure what to expect from Pierce with, “He loves me, he loves me not,” yet if the new work is anything like what we’ve come to expect, it’s sure to be powerful to say the least. We’re also looking forward to how the two artists will overlap; for Manilla, “in the end, my objects are no longer merely materials and distorted shapes but rather dissected feelings, broken memories, and dry organs that reveal a naked soul and the fragility of our situation.”

Five Men

Five Men offers five different opinions of ripe artists who are passionately concerned with geometry. This approach has an impact on their ability to contribute to the new morphology and ‘emanations’ in metal structured jewellery. CO is quite excited about René Hora’s brooches made from duralumin, a kind of aluminium alloy.

11:00–19:00 (Monday closed) Claudia Betancourt, Ricardo Nano Pulgar Text: The MATADOR series, presented by Claudia Betancourt and Nano Pulgar of WALKA STUDIO in Chile, South America, “reflects on matters such as death, the relation between body and ornament, and the primal origin of corporal ornament and its sacred meaning, associated to the cultures from Latin America and the Pacific Basin.”

The five members of the kunst.wirt.schaft present their own individual work, as well as a ten-year retrospective of the gallery’s activities. When this description was written, the team, made up of Esther Engele, Gigi Haubenhofer-Salicites, Eva Schmeiser-Cadia, Anna Waibel, and Andrea ZahlbrucknerJaufer, wasn’t quite sure where the venue would be, as they planned a mobile presentation around the city. See if you can find them!

Two young talents, Melanie Nützel and Bernhard Simon have organized a duo exhibition at Galerie Artefakt, a place that seems to feature jewellery (both art jewellery and more sellable goodies) with high quality apparel. What’s on show by the two is a bit of a mystery yet we’re prepared to be impressed.

— 19:00 Steinheilstraße 16 Rgb. Choonsun Moon, Heejoo Kim, Hyorim Lee, Yeonsoo Kim. 6.3.–12.3.

10:00–19:00 Schmuck malen will feature the work of three jewellers: Hyorim Lee, Heejoo Kim, and Choosun Moon, as well as painter, Yeonsoo Kim, all from Korea, each with various training in Germany which brings them together for this exhibition. Lee’s work should overlap quite nicely with that of Heejoo Kim, both visually and concept wise, speaking of growth, life cycles, and change. Together, their work meanwhile compliments the absentness present in Yeonsoo’s paintings of interior spaces as if they are waiting to be filled with some similar vitality found in the jewellery pieces. Although not super similar aesthetically, the repetitive feeling found in Moon’s work mimics life’s potential redundancy in the most delightful of ways, echoing the sentiment of the other three artists indirectly. The exhibition will take place at an artist’s atelier open to the public that hopes to radiate a "private yet liberal atmosphere."

11:00–20:00, Sun 11:00–16:00 Akiko Kurihara will be exhibiting new pieces of contemporary jewellery alongside the geometric sculpture of artist, Go Segawa in, Was it a cat I saw? Kurihara’s work aims to highlight a real choice; her decision to use jewellery as another type of creative medium, the size of which just happens to suit her best. And if you look closely, you can see this, as the artist uses irony to make clever yet subtle one-liner pieces. They speak directly to the physical connection as the work bears a very physical weight, humorously rationalizing itself. Her honest and direct approach to jewellery keeps us interested.

— 19:00 Museum Villa Stuck, Prinzregentenstraße 60, Schmuck aus Oslo und München S.Bronger, E.Chun, I.Resell Elieson, S.Heuser, R.Vethal Stølen, L.Walker, N.Weber, R.Ziegle 7.3.–7.4 (Tue–Sat) 11:00–18:00 Norwegian “jewellery engineer,” Sigurd Bronger, initiated this project by bringing together some of the most innovative contemporary jewellery artists practicing today, four from Oslo and four from Munich*.

An aim of the exhibition is to discuss what might be the future direction of the field. Lisa Walker is among the eight participants; a solid choice, as she has been known to constantly push the notion of what can be worn by stimulating such inquisition and her quip pieces. The beyond-unique material choice fellow participant, Stefan Heuser employs in combination with strong conception and selfreference makes this young artist someone to keep a definite eye on… while Eun Mi Chun will too present work of peculiar materiality not to be missed. CO expects this show to be comprehensive, satisfying and delightfully diverse; a true taste of the times and perhaps a clue as to future trends in the world of contemporary jewellery.

And with a name like, New Jewellery for the Gods, it shouldn’t be anything but. Represented by Galerie Handwerk, pieces made by this dazzeling cast of 18 contemporary jewellery seasoned veterans will be exhibited in a venue sure to match the high-caliber group of international artists: the Staatliche Antikensammlungen, or the State Collections of Antiques Musuem.

The title of the show is allegedly meant to reference the musuem’s collection of Etruscan gold jewellery, and CO thinks this list of contemporary masters can easily live up to their ancient predecessors. If you don’t know one damn thing about contemporry jewellery and are looking for a crash course, this is the show for you. And if it’s gold you’re after, be sure to keep your eye’s peeled for a Italian Maestro or two…

(Thu-Sat) 11:00–21:00 Eight artists and designers of diverse backgrounds come together for this three-day event, not only to exhibit work that converges ideas of exchange and the trade of goods, knowledge and ideas, but also to initiate that very action within the audience of the exhibition. “Great attention will be paid to the space definition and concept in order to invite the audience to linger a little longer… to stimulate conviviality through informal lectures in combination with specially conceived food-related experiences…” Prang Lerttaweewit and Kartrin Spranger come together to explore this relationship (surely not to be missed!), while Spranger’s new body of work from her previous series, Best Before, will also be exhibited. Nicolas Cheng will similarly present a new series about beauty and nothingness, which should complement Hilde De Decker’s contribution, as this has been a reoccurring theme for the artist. Jewellery artist, Beatrice Brovia; recent Rietveld Jewellery graduate Richard Elenbaas; and MFA jewellery graduate from Konstfack, Tzu-Ling Lee, will each present work discussing the different avenues of value. Industrial designer, Friederike Daumiller will also be contributing to the exhibition’s concept and design.

This “inter-cultural, trans-disciplinary and trans-generational” exhibition is sure to not only be thought-provoking, but a personal investment of the viewer-turned-participant.

—13:00 Das Geschäft, Rothmundstraße 6 Henriette Schuster 7, 8 and 10.3, (Thu, Fri, Sun) 13:00–18:00 Munich based jeweller, Henriette Schuster’s solo show is a bit of a mystery to us as well, but her quiet and delicate jewellery pieces - often featuring hands, houses, and other sentimental forms - intrigue us quite a bit, as well as her equally innocent and almost childlike drawings. We hope to see both at this event, but we’ll have to show up to find out. We hope to be charmed.

Tue-Fri 11:00–19:00, Sat–Sun 10:00–18:00 The solo presentation of Babette von Dohnanyi’s work, located in the boutique, Saffeel’s, is sure to get the average shopper interested in contemporary jewellery on the sly! Not a bad idea. Babette trained with the Italian maestro, Babetto, and one can see he must have been the one to instil in her a strong devotion to the geometric form.

23 Lusitania

Thirsty? Perhaps you need to take the edge of a long day of jewellery pursuing? This might just be the show for you. Four Portuguese Jewellery artists have taken over the Muschelkalk wine shop to exhibit their latest works, part of a unique partnership between the towns of Porto and Lisbon. The shop will meanwhile be hosting a Portuguese wine tasting, for those of you sick of drinking beer!

We are looking forward to seeing what this enthusiastic bunch has to show us, whether it’s an installation of 200 Chinese porcelain rings, or a pair of boxer shorts-turned-neck

SCHMUCK-Show 2013

— 19:00-21:00 Goldbergstudios, Müllerstr. 46A Live-Präsentation über die Ausstellungen der kommenden Tage, www.schmuck-show.com Kinga Zobel is at it again with her jewellery catwalk show that she debuted in 2012. After always being surrounded by art jewellery (her mother is Olga Zobel at Galerie Biró), it was only natural for Kinga to develop quite an interest in showcasing the interaction between jewellery, wearer and observer.

The Schmuck-Show does just that, while also inviting new, potential collectors and appreciators of contemporary jewellery into her world. Kinga says, “Showing the pleasure of wearing jewellery is the best promotion!”

CO is pleased to feature a more in-depth interview in the first edition of our printed magazine.

Britton’s jewels will be delightfully scattered and displayed amongst large drawings also by the artist, welcome component that compliments the jewellery in a fresh manner.

Christian Pixis, seems to like to host cross-disciplinary exhibitions, and we think this might be one of them.

(Thu–Sat) 10:00–18:00 This show features the new collaborative project, Biquin, created by Katharina Baur and Sabine Roth, the name is abstracted from mathematics and numeral encoding.

From what we’ve seen, the jewellery label is comprised of two-toned highly entangled chain pieces. Jasmin Hess is also showing her “re.in.car.nated toys,” in the exhibition, pieces made from old tin car parts. The trio has come together to showcase “no jewellery in triangular shapes. In other words, the Pythagorean theorem is the interface of the exhibitors.”

Antje Stutz and Linda Pieri are the duo that Galerie Felix Almstadt presents this year, a gallery that prides itself on facilitating a relaxing and personal exchange for its visitors.

Pieri’s articulated hand pieces made of slate evoke the same feeling of closeness, an interesting juxtaposition to the lightness present in Stutz’s work.

Thought provoking environments are fundamental to the group, and this exhibition is meant to bring people together through interactive events. The artist utilizes photography as means of clearer expression to illustrate the relationship her objects might have with the physical body. CO is quite curious to see how the innovative photos will work with fellow exhibitors, Karin Johansson, Benedikt Fischer and Sophie Hanagarth, all three on the rise.

Pictured is Hanagrth’s Braid-trophy, a bracelet forged from pure iron. Imagine wearing that thing around your wrist!

Show’s statement: “Let’s fall over – falling over/revolution desired,’ is the concept shared by nine jewellers. Bowling as a principle of life? The ball is rolling, pins are falling and people are cheering.

Patrícia Correia Domingues’ (Portugal) Reflections of Landscapes are lusciously simple, while Barbora Dzurakova’s (Slovakia) brightly colored brooches offer a strikingly playful balance. Together with Katharina Dettar (Germany) and Edu Tarín (Spain), the four artists make up the Plateus Group, what they call a continuous process, here to grow.

Heisse Happen

Sarah Lierl, co-founder of the Tragbar in Munich shows knitted and crocheted bracelets and necklaces from rubber bands as her latest work. Anna Lang goes in three-dimensional computer designed jewellery objects, which are marked down into two-dimensional ball pen sketches, still giving a whimsical impression of their origin.

Isabelle Enders shows new peppermills from the “PfefferMarsch!” line, in which she takes old faucet handles and puts them in an entirely new context, also a small version of her temporary “Café Heißluft”, an eating concept which can be tried on Saturday evening.

14:00–18:00 In this body of work Draper uses three types of materials and their manipulations to create final pieces: she applies heat and pressure to form the plastic, paints thin layers of cashew lacquer on wood, and uses braiding and weaving techniques on copper. These methods, despite the differences, seem to be always directed towards achieving a unique result through a long and repetitive process of creation and a certain set of rules.

Rittlinger’s work (shown in the photo) is inspired by geometrical and natural forms while using new technologies/materials with traditional handcraft, in a way the artist describes as a bohemian. Hölscher’s RUHR Collection on the other hand was inspired by a fascination with the industrial heritage of the monumental architecture in the ‘Ruhrgebeit’, a densely populated urban area in Germany.

Twenty years ago the class of Otto Künzli at the Academy of Arts in Munich organized a huge jewellery event called - GOLD OR LIFE. All of the participants of the current Weitblick/93/13 show were a part of it at the time. They thought it would be a good idea to reunite and explore the similarities and differences in their work twenty years later.

Each participant will present a piece from 1993 and 2013. Artists themselves are curious and do not know what the others might show! It will surely be a surprise and a lot of fun.

Otto Künzli FOR SALE

We can only speculate about the intentions behind this show; one thought might be that the opening of this one is intentionally in contrast to the other at the Pinakothek der Moderne as an effort to counteract the grandeur of the retrospective and present an alive and available Künzli for sale! We hope so.

My Kingdom

Why should you care about how people value your work? Whatever you may put into it, can always be miles away from what may be perceived. Jewellery is a lengthy process that knows no end, but Mia Maljojoki isn’t tied up with that. Her work is ephemeral, lucid, performative and aims to reveal the physical marks on the skin and the body. It shows more about who we are than what we wear.

Otto Künzli is an exception to the rule. His reputation goes beyond that of a jeweller and has been known to be recognized as an artist outside the realm of contemporary jewellery.

His retrospective at the Pinakothek der Moderne, more or less his first retrospective, may just signify this, which in turn signifies his very status as an exception, as the man who does it all right, an artist able to transcend medium and material. The exhibition will premier in the Schaustelle of the Musuem and will include 150-200 objects and groups of objects from Künzli’s varies periods, as well as interdisciplinary conceptual works realized through photography and installation, which is what we’re the most excited about.

Each year at Schmuck, one jewellery artist is honoured in a retrospective called, Classic of the Modern. New Zealand’s Warwick Freeman has been chosen for 2013, presenting pieces "characterized by a reduced, very clean idiom and a particular reference to natural forms." Join him Sunday morning, 11.00 am at the Schaustelle outdoor, for an interesting talk surely not to be missed.

Thu–Sun 10:00–18:00, Thu 10:00–20:00 This exhibition features images of 41 pieces of jewellery and metalwork selected from the GSM&J Collection at the Royal College of Art in London. The concept of the show is to make the trees in the park surrounding the Die Neue Sammlung the site of the exhibition.

Each tree trunk presents one person’s work and all the trees together form a great chain like a necklace surrounding the ‘body’ of museum buildings. Fixed to the tree trunks are a 360° array of images and texts that tell the story of the pieces from the GSM&J Collection. Each collection item is photographed from a number of angles; it is as though we are looking at the real pieces, exploring them from every angle. (text from the press release)

For CO Volker Atrops has proved to be an inspirer. He is like an oracle when it comes down to getting questions answered with (even better) questions about the condition of contemporary jewellery. Vintage Violence is a presentation in an antiquarian bookstore, in which he and his wife will expose a not at all dystrophic view on the future of fashion, design and jewellery. Every piece on show is part of an idiom of idiosyncratic ideas that just ask to be questioned, cherished or explained. If you expect an update on the all things contemporary, be warned: this is where history is made!

Mon–Sun, Mon-Tue 14-21, Thu-Sat 14:00-21:00, Sun 14:00-18:00 Presented by Akihiro Ikeyama, Junwon Jung and Mari Iwamoto, Irony Forest is “the physical space in which the desire of modern human can be satisfied by nature.” The three students of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts have come together to show their jewellery through an imagined forest that they describe as nature’s abstracted area,uniquely having stimulated a different interpretation by each artist. Look for this delicate piece by Akihiro, Holey Holye “I have always been fascinated by the power and morphology of living things. I have transformed the life force in natural material into my jewellery so that nature and human can coexist closer together. As deer horns are constantly reborn and branching out, I hope one will be able to feel life breathing in myriad and diverse forms.” –Artist statement of Akihiro Ikeyama

This event, along with only a very few others, will be more like a grab-bag exhibtion; a mystery show if you will, as we don’t have any info to share! We have the idea that Studio K162 is Renate Scholz’s studio, an artist that has done various workshops with the likes of Stefano Marchetti and Giovanni Corvaja, just to give you a clue.

Tue–Sat 11:00–19:00 Gallery Anna Pirk is presenting the exhibition of Ludwig Menzel and his imaginative metal work. The gallery is situated 60 km outside of Munich at the lake Tegernsee in a beautiful area next to the mountains.

There is a train from Munich (CentralStation) to Tegernsee (Bayrische Oberland Bahn = BOB) every hour. Then you would need to change to a connecting bus from Tegernsee (Bahnhof) to Rottach-Egern (Post) and after a short walk you would reach your destination.
