In the fall of 2019, I had the opportunity to move to Lawrence. At that time, I realized how amazing the Lawrence community is. Where else can you find a historic city center that both borders a 1,700-acre park and has plenty of room to grow? Housing is ample at almost every price point and ranges from cute little starter homes to lakefront estates. I love this community, and I am thrilled to be serving Lawrence as the president of the Greater Lawrence Chamber.

Keystone Group to break ground on new development in Lawrence

Keystone Group is moving forward with its mixed-use development in Lawrence with plans to break ground on Oct. 24.
The development, named The Benjamin, will have approximately 220 residential units and include a pool and luxury amenity spaces. The 24,000 square feet of retail will be a combination of restaurants and retail uses.
The Benjamin will contain market-rate rental units with one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. It is on the corner of 56th Street and Lawrence Village Parkway and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2025.
“The Benjamin will be the first mixed-use development to add luxury apartments to the neighborhood,” said Jennifer Pavlik, senior vice president and chief of staff at Keystone Group. “With sought-after retail tenants adding to the growth and excitement of the Fort Ben neighborhood, Keystone has worked closely with the Fort Harrison Reuse Authority, the mayor’s office, the Lawrence City Council and other community stakeholders to partner on a project that impacts the neighborhood with an exciting new housing development that will bring new
restaurants and retail tenants for residents, businesses,and visitors.”
The project is blocks away from Fort Harrison State Park with accessibility to many walking and biking trails, dog parks and other green and public spaces.
Keystone Group does not foresee any delays for the project but is prepared for potential slowdowns.
“There are always contingency plans in development and construction, especially now with longer-than-normal lead times, worker shortages and other typical delays such as unexpected weather and site conditions,” Pavlik said. “Keystone is excited to deliver this exciting transformational project to Fort Ben and will do everything we can to stay on schedule.”
Keystone Group has completed several development projects in the Indianapolis area, including Sophia Square, a mixed-use project in downtown Carmel; 3 Mass Condos on Mass Ave; 220 Meridian, which is a redevelopment of the old AT&T Tower in downtown Indianapolis; and is constructing the Intercontinental Hotel and Eleven Park in downtown Indianapolis.

Pendleton Pike Progress construction to start in 2024
The Indiana Department of Transportation is finalizing plans for improving safety on the busy 5-mile stretch of Pendleton Pike that goes through the City of Lawrence and is home to many businesses.
The project, called Pendleton Pike Progress, focuses on safety and traffic flow. According to INDOT, a review of crash reports over three years found multiple areas with crash rates and severity higher than the statewide average. INDOT officials say they’re planning medians to limit left turns in hopes of reducing the crash rate.
During an August public hearing in Lawrence, INDOT officials provided an update on the project. Cory Lamb of CHA Consulting said the project begins at I-465 and stretches northeast, ending at the intersection with Oaklandon Road. The 5-mile stretch has two-way traffic with no barriers, and crashes are common.
Factors contributing to crashes on the road include traffic congestion, aggressive driving and drivers needing to cross three lanes of traffic to make a left turn. Lamb said a raised median running down most of Pendleton Pike is expected to mitigate several concerns.
“INDOT has chosen to install medians because the design meets
the purpose and need in improving safety and connectivity and reduces congestion,” Lamb said.
Lamb said drivers wanting to turn left would need to use the nearest intersection or make legal U-turns. Plans call for 12 traffic signals along the roadway.
City of Lawrence Director of Engineering Sri Venugopalan said some business owners weren’t pleased with the proposal, but there also are those in support of the idea because of safety concerns.
“The aggressive driving on Pendleton Pike has been an issue,” he said. “You’ll see people flying 70 mph and then using the center line. It’s a pretty dangerous scenario out there.”
Pendleton Pike Progress is in the environmental and design stage. Construction is expected to begin no earlier than 2024 and will last up to two years.
The project also includes intersection improvements at 56th Street. Local cross streets are expected to be realigned to make it easier for drivers to turn and see oncoming traffic. The project also will connect sidewalks in the area.

Festivals and events help provide better quality of life in Lawrence
The Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lawrence frequently join forces for a variety of fun projects within the city, including the popular Winterfest and Fourth Fest celebrations.
Winterfest launched in 2020 and has featured ice skating, music performances, carolers, visits with Santa, movies and a winter farmers market.
The 2023 Winterfest kicks off with A Lawrence Christmas Nov. 25 at Civic Plaza, 5710 Lawrence Village Pkwy. Winterfest is a monthlong celebration of the winter holidays.
Fourth Fest is all about the Fourth of July. The city and chamber host a day-long celebration that includes the only Independence Day parade in Marion County. The festival also includes a traditional fish fry, a classic car show, a dance party with live music and, of course, fireworks.
Another event that the chamber promotes is the Fort Ben Farmers Market at 8920 Otis Ave. in Lawrence, which takes place every Thursday afternoon, rain or shine, from early June through early October. The market has grown over the past few years, with more customers, vendors and attractions.
Market organizer Damaris Iraheta told Current in June that the Fort Ben Farmers Market started in 2017 in response to some area
grocery stores closing. It had about a dozen vendors at the time and took place at Civic Plaza. In 2022, it moved to the Cultural Campus, where it expanded to 40 vendors.
She said the weekly event is more than a farmers market; it’s a community resource for residents and an attraction for visitors.

Lawrence chamber and city partner for 2024 eclipse celebration

The April 8, 2024, total eclipse is months away, but plans are in the works to celebrate this rare celestial phenomenon, which is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people to the greater Indianapolis area.
Central Indiana is in the path of totality, which means this area will experience the full eclipse. City of Lawrence Chief of Staff Cori Korn said planners are not only organizing a big celebration on the day of the eclipse but also are working the eclipse theme into various events leading up to the big day to build excitement and anticipation.
“Because we know it’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for so many of our residents and (other) people, we don’t want anyone to miss out,” she said.
In December, Winterfest and the Lawrence Christmas Festival will include eclipse elements, she said, and they’re working with the public library to get the word out to younger residents.
In March, Arts for Lawrence is planning a visual arts display in its gallery, celebrating all things eclipse-related, Korn said, and on April 6, a couple days before the actual eclipse, Lawrence will host an “Outrun the Sun” 5K.
“That weekend. the Greater Indianapolis area is expecting about 400,000 visitors,” Korn said. “And so with that, we want to be a spot and destination that not only our residents but visitors alike want to come to. So we’re trying to do different activities every day of that weekend.”
In addition to the 5K on April 6, organizers are planning a pickleball tournament April 7.
April 8, the day of the eclipse, is a Monday. For central Indiana, the phenomenon starts at about 1:50 p.m., with totality at 3:06 p.m. It will end at 4:23 p.m.
Korn said the city will host a festival on April 8, with live music, special activities for kids, food trucks and vendors selling eclipse and celestial-related items.
“It will all be very eclipsed-themed,” she said. “It’s pretty exciting to know that we’re in that path of totality. The last time it was here, it was a partial, and to have the total eclipse and be on that path of totality is exciting. We really want to make it an event for all the people of Lawrence.”
Korn said they’re encouraging local restaurants to offer eclipsethemed specials, and they hope to work with an area brewery for a special eclipse beer.

Lawrence Chamber offers various networking opportunities
The Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce offers regular events for its members and the community throughout the year, providing opportunities to network, be informed and simply have fun.
Jodi Petty, marketing and events coordinator with the Lawrence Chamber, said the chamber always welcomes new sponsors to ensure these events can continue. Below are some of those membership opportunities
State of the City Luncheon
This annual event takes place in the spring, usually March or April, and features the City of Lawrence mayor providing an overview of the community. The most recent State of the City was the final one for outgoing Mayor Steve Collier, who took the opportunity to highlight success stories from the city’s different departments. Chamber President Brad Klopfenstein said the 2024 State of the City address will be unique in that the city will have a new mayor for the first time in eight years.
Chew on This Luncheon
The Chew on This monthly lunch event is a fairly new addition to the schedule, Petty said, and has been hosted by The Garrison, although others interested in sponsoring are welcome to do so. The event is the third Tuesday of each month, starts around 11:30 a.m. and lasts through 1 p.m. Featured speakers have included City of Lawrence officials, local media representatives and business leaders.
Coffee with Colleagues
The monthly Coffee with Colleagues is an early-morning event that Petty said is a more low-key networking opportunity.
Heartland Film has hosted many of the breakfast events this year, with Metronet providing donuts and Porter Books & Bread providing coffee. Those who attend can introduce themselves and network with other members from throughout Lawrence. Klopfenstein said the breakfast event is the second Wednesday of each month.
State of the Schools Luncheon
Klopfenstein said this informative annual event focuses on student achievement, the financial state of the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township and upcoming projects to enhance the educational experience. MSDLT Superintendent Dr. Shawn Smith gave the most recent State of the Schools presentation on Sept 19.
Christmas Toy Drive in conjunction with Lawrence Fire Department and NE Indy Rotary
This event benefits the Lawrence Fire Department Family Assistance Program, Klopfenstein said. Chamber members raise money and collect toys for families throughout Lawrence, and the annual drive culminates with a holiday party.

Annual Membership Luncheon
The annual luncheon is an opportunity for chamber members to gather, hear about the past year, select new board members and hear from a guest speaker. The event also serves as the chamber’s annual business meeting and is the organization’s largest event of the year. The 2023 luncheon is set for Nov. 14 and will feature guest speaker Ersal Ozdemir, founder and chairman of the Keystone Group and Indy Eleven.
Annual Golf Outing
This event welcomes golfers from around the community to gather at one of the many golf courses in Lawrence to see who can take home the grand prize. Klopfenstein said the golf outing typically happens in September and is a great kickoff to fall in Indiana. He said they’re looking into launching a ninehole outing in addition to the annual 18-hole event.
Quarterly Afterhours networking social events
Approximately four times a year, chamber members get together for after-work libations as a way to relax and get to know each other. “Lawrence features several fine establishments, and we do our best to rotate around to most of them,” Klopfenstrein said.
Weekly Classic Car Cruise-in at Fort Harrison
The chamber’s weekly Cruise-in is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at VFW Post 7119 on Lee Road. “This is a free-to-attend event, so just show up with a lawn chair and enjoy the scenery,” Klopfenstein said. The VFW Post is open to the public for these events, he sa id, so participants can buy food and a beverage while there.
Ribbon cuttings
Chamber members who are celebrating a new location, a renovation or an anniversary can commemorate the event with a free chamber ribbon-cutting. Klopfenstein said they will announce the event to members, bring a ribbon and the big scissors, and promote the event on social media.
Member video features
“As an added value to our membership, we’ll occasionally do video features of our members,” Klopfenstein said. “These 1-2 minute videos are an easy way for the chamber staff to tell others who you are and what you do.”
Lawrence racing events aim to promote active, healthy habits

A series of races traveled through the Lawrence area this year, with a goal of encouraging a healthy lifestyle and staying active in the local community.
Beyond Monumental held its 28th annual Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben on Oct. 7. The race runs through historic downtown Lawrence and Fort Harrison State Park. The annual race is part of the organization’s effort to instill beneficial running habits in the community.
“Originally, it was a marathon, and now it is a half marathon, 10k and 5k,” said Jed Cornforth, executive director of Beyond Monumental. “Beyond Monumental acquired (the event) in 2016, and we’ve since added a large kids’ program to the event. Now there are about 600 Lawrence students that get to come and participate for free. That is part of what we call our APEX Benefits Monumental Kids movement, so that’s a six- to seven-week program in the schools.”
The goal of the races is to provide the community with an opportunity to create and pursue a healthy lifestyle through running.
“Our hope is it inspires the community to get healthy, whether it’s somebody who is training seriously or someone who wants to be motivated to do something active in their community,” Cornforth said. “We are a nonprofit, and all the proceeds go toward our kids’ running program to benefit youth health and wellness. Our hope is that it inspires kids to stick with it and learn that running is lifelong and can be helpful in leading a healthy and active lifestyle.”
Other race events that happen in the area throughout the year include Outrun the Sun and Run (317).
Outrun the Sun, Inc. held its annual race Sept. 30 to create awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers. Outrun the Sun, Inc. educates communities about preventative measures against skin cancer and raises funds for research. According to the organization’s website $133,727 was raised through the 2023 event.
Run (317) put on a series of races throughout the 2023 summer season, where participants ran a 3.17-mile race that ended with a party. Each race concluded with a DJ, local craft beer, food and games.
