RETURN TO THEIR ROOTS Carmel High graduates – and brothers – Nick and Zach McLean bring new band Beautiful Lies to the site of their earliest concerts. By Tia Nielsen For Current In Carmel

P

laying in the church band during elementary school was just the musical beginning for Zach and Nick McLean, both Carmel high school graduates, 2003 and 2005 respectively. Now living in Boston, Nick attends, and Zach is a 2007 graduate of, the premier Berklee School of Music. Saturday, the pull of past community support will bring them and their latest band, Beautiful Lies, to Ben & Ari’s in Fishers, where the brothers helped get Student Band Night launched. The McLean brothers have started multiple rock-style bands over the years. This new band is headed to Europe for a tour in March. Now touring the East Coast, they are making a brief swing through the Midwest to home territory. Ben & Ari’s is a family-friendly activity center that began hosting student band nights in 2001. Co-owner John DeLuca says that they work hard to create a place where kids can have fun, hear good bands and be in a safe environment. He notes that it is not unusual to see as many parents in the audience on student band nights as teens. To perform, bands must agree not to use foul language, lyrics or gestures. Security is provided by a Fishers Police officer. Zach and Nick’s latest alternative/Indie/rock band will play Birdy’s Zach, 2003 in Indianapolis tonight, senior photo too, but Zach is particularly happy to be back at Ben & Ari’s, a regular venue for them during high school. Zach, 22, is happy to perform where all ages can experience Nick, 2005 live music. They are “the senior photo most fun shows,” he adds. The connection with the audience is energizing. Zach and Nick, 20, were founders of the four-member band Crash that performed the first time Ben & Ari’s presented local high school bands. De Luca heard Crash play for a fundraiser, liked the sound and asked them to appear for the band night. De Luca admits he was uncertain if student bands would be good enough to draw in an appreciative crowd. The first night was so successful that they added several nights over the course of the school year. Groups with the McLean brothers have appeared there about a dozen times over the years. De Luca notes he misses the caliber of

the band and the brothers. Their PA system, too. They regularly let every band use it on student nights while their dad Chris ran the sound system. SIGNS OF A PROBLEM It is our position that Commercial Real Estate Leasing Agents should be required to adhere to the same signage rules as all other businesses. Up and down every major corridor in our commercial-space-rich community, one sees the nearly billboard-sized advertisements offering space in this building or that. While we certainly understand the need to keep these buildings fully leased on the tax rolls, this form of signage is being grossly misused by brokers seeking to see their names and the names of their firms prominently displayed on Meridian Street

day-in and day-out. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to post the name of the leasing company in a formal way on the signage introducing the building? Any potential tenant would need to find the name of the property to contact the agent and show interest in the building, so it is safe to assume that this potential tenant has seen the building’s naming markers. We are not advocating for an elimination of commercial leasing advertizing, but rather a more reasonable and consistent approach to the phenomena of “permanent” billboards now in place.

PICKING THE ‘BEST OF’ FROM AMONG THE WORST

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

22 4

I

’ve always wanted to write one of those year-end columns, where I pick my favorite this and least favorite that. But now that I actually have the opportunity to do so, I’m having a little difficulty. I can’t pick my favorite and least favorite television programs, because I don’t watch enough TV anymore to have any opinions. I can’t give you my least favorite movie, because I don’t have time to see the “clunkers” anymore. Andy Besides, I have a personal rule that if a movie comes out with a superhero in it, I pass. I can’t give you my favorite song of the year, because I haven’t heard one I liked since Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day,” but that was 2006. In fact, that may be the only song I’ve liked so far this millennium, but I’d have to think about it for a while. Now, I can give you my least favorite song. I’ve certainly heard plenty of contenders. With the help of my kids, I’ve narrowed my choice to two rap songs, if you can believe that. One is “This Is Why I’m Hot” and the other is “Party Like A Rockstar.” Both are annoying and incessantly repetitive. But if I had to choose one over the other, I’d have to go with “This Is Why I’m Hot.” At least it sounds kinda fun to party like a rock star. Whereas, I’m guessing if I ever met the guy who does “This Is Why I’m Hot,” I most likely would not find him to be “hot,” as I understand the current vernacular.

One other personal award I can give you is the year’s best movie. Now, I’ll admit that I haven’t seen all the clutter of Oscar contenders that are still being released nationwide as I write. But of the movies I’ve seen this year, I’d have to go with “No Country For Old Men.” Its quirky script is easily the Coen brothers’ best since the 1996 classic, “Fargo,” and the acting is superb, especially that of Javier Bardem, who gives us the most memorable bad guy in eons. I also Ray liked Josh Brolin, who proves he’s already a better actor than his dad, and, of course, Tommy Lee Jones. With the recent trifecta of “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada,” the pitifully underpromoted war picture “In The Valley Of Elah,” and “No Country For Old Men,” Tommy Lee Jones’ career is peaking at an age when most actors are either retired or dead. And in these three recent films, he’s displayed the entire gamut of human emotion without cracking so much as a single smile. Now that’s hard to do. Next time, I’ll have some local best and worst awards. And no, spending our taxes on oil paintings of our former mayors was not the dumbest idea to come from our civic leaders in 2007. Andy Ray is a manufacturer’s representative in Carmel. You can reach him at andy46032@mail. inct.net.

SOCKS IN ’08! You’ll recall we recently took Dubya to task for fairly endorsing, albeit unwittingly, Hillary Clinton’s bid for the presidency. He spoke of her experience (what a total scam that is) in the White House, eight years of it, in fact. Well, do we have a shocker for you: There’s a new candidate. It’s Socks. The Clintons’ cat, Socks. Who possibly could have seen more than Socks during the feline’s stay at 1600? We’re sticking with Socks. As a matter of fact, “Socks in ’08” has become something of a battle cry around here. We’re joining the Socks The Cat Fan Club any moment now. ( You, too, can join by simply entering this into your Web browser: http://www.geocities. com/CapitolHill/6157/) ... Our media brethren have anointed Clinton as “the experienced” candidate for no other reason than just being there. Our position: Uh, so was Socks! So there. Remember, Socks never entered into matrimony as a means to become the ruler of the free world. Socks has always achieved on his own. Let it be understood: In many correlations, Mr. Clinton was the Nixon of the 1990s. He rose on his own, as did Tricky Dick in the ’70s. Each was the smartest guy in the room at one time. Alan Greenspan said so. Had it been Dan Rather who said it – Wait! He wasn’t THAT observant! – we’d be off in a different direction. *** You knew this was coming: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Football season is 10 times worse because all of Sunday is a wash. Forget yard work, home repairs, laundry; if it didn’t get taken care of Saturday, it ain’t happenin’ until the following week. I know some of you are saying, “But Soccer Mom, you’re a stay-at home mom; it’s your responsibility to take care of the house and kids. Do you help your husband with his work?” No, I do not. He is an IT department manager, and I am not allowed to go near electronics unless it’s to use e-mail or Word. I have an annoying tendency to just start pressing buttons until either the entire system shuts down or my fingers cramp. I can multi-task like nobody’s business, and efficiency is my middle name, but I am not superwoman. I cannot do it all on my own. Let’s get real, here. Men often work 10hour days, but their job ends around 6 every evening and they generally have Saturday and Sunday off. Even when we’re asleep, we’re on

call, and the only real “weekends” for us are during a vacation without children. The least my husband could do, in my opinion, is help me out with the damn dishes before I have to turn into a knife-wielding lunatic. It’s really quite the dilemma. Depending on the day and the time of the month, I oscillate between an understanding wife (who takes pity on her hard-working husband and does everything herself with a spring in her step until the bitterness sets in) and a controlling task-master (who drives her husband to the brink of insanity with her constant henpecking and sarcastic comments). But I don’t want to be a martyr or a nagger, I just want a little help every once in a while. Is that too much to ask? Peace out! Danielle Wilson is a Carmel resident and contributing columnist. hich is it better to be — a nagger or a martyr? That’s the conundrum I seem to face at least once a week, twice during football season. Do I pester my husband incessantly until a job gets done, or do I suffer silently and, in the end, complete the task myself? Either way, at least in my view, I get the short end of the stick. Let’s take the example of doing the dishes. After dinner, my husband generally helps clear the table and wipes down the counters. He even stacks the dishes in the sink, though he rarely loads the dishwasher. He’s then off to the couch to Danielle watch “Scrubs” reruns Wilson on Comedy Central until 8. He needs time to decompress after a tough day at the office. Fine. I get that. But then get off your butt and do the dishes. At least this is what I’m saying inside my head as I watch the dishes sit through an episode of “Dirty Jobs,” and then “Sportscenter,” and finally, “Heroes.” At 10, the dishes remain, and as I go off to bed, I know that I’ll be doing them in the morning as I wait for my blessed coffee to brew. So what should I do? Because when I say nothing, the chores don’t get done. He gets off the hook and I get stuck trying to clean dried tomato sauce from my dayware. But if I repeatedly ask him to clean the dishes, then I’m the nagging wife who can’t let her husband relax in the evening. “Uh, I did work all day, honey!”

But we’re also presenting you with some stocks you might not have considered, such as Marvel (NYSE: MVL) and IMAX (Nasdaq: IMAX). IMAX? Well, why not? According to longtime Fool contributor Rick Munarriz, 2008 could very well be IMAX’s year. The company just inked a deal to put 100 of its supersized screens into AMC’s theaters. As for Marvel, Anders Bylund reminds us that it’s coming out with selfproduced movies featuring the Hulk and Iron Man. If either of those films performs as well as its co-produced movies featuring Spider-Man and the X-Men did, Marvel will be in the green in a major way.

WEB 2.0: A BETTER VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE

et’s test your knowledge of Web 2.0. Of the following, which answer provides the best definition of Web 2.0: (a) a philosophy about open communication using the Internet, (b) social networks, (c) video on a Web site, or (d) Version 2.0 of the Internet software? While answers (b) and (c) might include some concepts of Web 2.0, the best answer is (a). In 2004, Internet guru Tim O’Reilly coined the term Web 2.0 in describing the Web’s more useful and robust second generation. The first generation of the Internet, because of the slow speed using dialup modems, was David Cain generally best suited Virtually to providing static information only. The design and features of most first generation Web sites don’t encourage any user participation or network effects. But Web 2.0 intended to encapsulate the use of the Internet as a platform to foster participation, openness and network effects. Common examples of Web 2.0 features include blogging, the ability for a user to post

a comment (including a rating or feedback), widgets/gadgets or other sharable applications, social networking, and the incorporation of wikis (which allows for the sharing of ideas). Most of these features can be integrated into a Web site to create more of a user experience. A Web 2.0 enabled site would incorporate social equity and create a user experience by incorporating features that allow the user to become involved or engaged. Notable examples include Amazon and Ebay, which

encourage participation through user feedback and user ratings. YouTube allows users to post video clips and encourages other users to rate these segments. MySpace and Facebook are both social networks that are all about user control – they provide communities where stories and experiences are shared. And these stories can change behaviors. These sites become experiences. And that’s a key component to having a Web 2.0 enabled Web site – making it less about you and more about the experience. But, for those that still believe a Web site is simply an online brochure should look at the horizon more closely. Think about your own behaviors. What causes you to visit a site more than once? Usually it is not about the site, it’s about you. Businesses that think more about the user and less about themselves are closer to providing a better virtual experience. BEEF IS GOOD? Almost half of the fat in beef is a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, also found in olive oil. Furthermore, most of the saturated fat in beef actually decreases your heart-disease risk, either by lowering bad cholesterol, or by reducing your ratio of total cholesterol to good cholesterol. And besides being one of the most available sources of highquality protein, beef provides important nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins. — Menshealth.com

One in three Americans suffers from health risks associated with obesity, yet the Bush administration has been placing the interest of businesses, particularly the sugar industry,

According to the Observer International, obesity threatens to bankrupt the U.S. economy and threaten the financial stability of the world due to lost productivity, lower quality of life, and encourages the onset of diabetes and heart disease and outrageous medical bills. Pretty heavy stuff. All together now, “a spoonful of sugar helps our health go down, down, down.” The president believes that fighting fat is a matter of the individual, not the state. CRUNCH THOSE ABS: Grab a medicine ball for an intensified crunch workout that will flatten your belly before beach season. A good weight for ab workouts is a 4 kilogram medicine ball (just shy of 9 pounds). Starting position: Lie on your back, with your hips and knees bent as shown and your feet off the floor. Rest your hands lightly on your chest. Position the ball between your knees. The move: Exhale as you lift your shoulders off the floor and bring your knees toward your chest. Grab the ball with your hands and bring it to your chest as you inhale. The finish: Return your shoulders and legs to the starting position. Transfer the ball back to your legs on the next repetition, and keep alternating ball positions for the entire set. — menshealth.com BENEFITS OF MASSAGE: It is well known that stress can age you. From a physiological point of view, aging is a direct outcome of dehydration. In youth, muscles in the face and body are designed to work independently of each other. When muscle fibers

dehydrate, the fibers start to stick together. They become stiff and ridged and don’t work the way they should. Add to that, the dehydration allows nasty toxins to stay in the tissues, an obvious aging element. Stress combined with dehydration makes a body wrinkled and even become shorter over time! To combat dehydration, you can start with drinking lots of water. Massage also helps fight both the stress aspects along with the dehydrating situation. Charlie Marsh, regional developer for Massage Envy, points out that there are hydration benefits of massage. Regular massage increases the lubrication between muscle fibers. Massage reintroduces fluids to the tissues, softening the muscle tissues. You regain flexibility. It allows the fibers in your face and body move more efficiently.

And finally, once you get your music library imported, get an external hard drive backup system so you don’t lose all this hard work. If you still would rather pay someone to do the work, use Google to see if a local company offers the service (even if it cost more per CD) before you go through the hassle and expense of packing and shipping your collection. Also, do some homework (BBB, user forums, etc.) on the company that will be in possession of your music library, especially if you only know it from the Web site (and don’t forget to insure the package when shipping!)

ARMED AND DANGEROUS: The secret to the USB Doomsday Device is very simple: It has three levels of failsafe protection. In order to arm the device, you first need to activate switch one. Then, you need to activate switch two. Then (and stay with us here, because this is where it gets a little crazy), you need to activate switch three. Switch three is a key switch, and only authorized personnel should have a copy of the key. Once all three switches are turned on (in order) the Main light will glow red. This means the device is armed and very dangerous. All that is left to do is flip back the plastic shield and press the red button for an explosive sound effect. Oh yeah, and you can also use the USB Doomsday Device as a four-port USB hub. No one will mess with you with this baby on your desk. — thinkgeek.com

Change the option for “On CD Insert” to read “Import Songs and Eject” and while you’re there, be sure to change the “Import using” option from Apple’s proprietary AAC format to the universal MP3 format (this will allow you to use the files on any standard MP3 player down the road, just in case the iPod someday loses its luster!) Once you have changed this setting, if you have iTunes open when you insert an audio CD, it will automatically start importing the music into your library and eject the disk to let you know when it’s done. You can also set Windows “AutoPlay” to automatically open iTunes and import a CD the next time you insert a CD without iTunes open. Be sure to check the “Always do this…” box once you have made your selection. If you are a Windows Media Player fan, you can set the same option by going to “Tools,” then “Options” and click on the “Rip Music” tab. In the “Rip Settings” section, change the format from the WMA format ( Windows Media Audio won’t play on an iPod) to MP3 and put a checkmark in the “Rip CD when inserted” and “Eject CD when ripping is complete” boxes. Before you get started, however, check the amount of free disk space on your computer’s hard drive. An average CD will take 50MB

MALWARE GETTING SMARTER: If you think that the latest security suites afford complete protection against malware attacks, think again. Today’s for-profit malware pushers use dedicated test labs and other increasingly professional techniques to improve their chances of infecting your computer. And the techniques they employ to outpace security software makers appear to be working. Make no mistake — a good security program can go a long way toward keeping you in control of your system. But PC World’s recent tests of security suites found that new malware easily evaded the applications. — pcworld.com

he popularity of portable music players such as the iPod has created a new problem for many music lovers: transferring their extensive CD libraries into digital format on their computer. Most users have manually ripped a CD in iTunes or Windows Media Player, but the thought of doing it 300 or more times is overwhelming. But before you go shipping your CD collection halfway across the country and paying $1 to $2 per CD (many services have a minimum of 50 to 100 CDs), there may be an easier way. If you change the default setting for your music program, you can tell it to Gary Hubbard automatically rip a Technology CD anytime that you insert it into your machine. TOYS FOR THE RECORD

WATCH OUT, MUSIC FANS! You, too, could be sued for thousands of dollars by the major record companies — even if you’ve never once illegally downloaded music. That’s because at least one lawyer for the Recording Industry Association of America, the Big Four record companies’ lobbying arm and primary legal weapon, considers the copying of songs from your own CDs to your own computer, for your own personal use, to be just as illegal as posting them online for all to share, according to a federal lawsuit filed in Arizona. — foxnews.com

BLUEPRINT FOR IMPROVEMENT By Larry Greene, Case Handyman & Remodeling Question: We would like to upgrade our existing laminate kitchen countertops. What are the pros and cons of the most popular options and what trends are you seeing in our market? Answer: As kitchens have become the “hub” of the home, it’s more important than ever that the countertops be durable but also look good. The biggest trend in today’s kitchens is the use of multiple countertop materials. The island may have a different material than the perimeter. While the most popular choices in Carmel remain synthetic solid surface materials like Corian or natural stone granite, quartz is emerging as a popular option. 1. Acrylic solid surface: Solid-surface materials like Corian are durable and cost less than granite or quartz. Solid-surface tops allow for built-in integral sinks, and suppliers have recently introduced updated colors with translucent particles that look more interesting. 2. Granite: Although the maintenance concern with granite is often exaggerated, it is true that granite is porous and does

need a sealer to be applied at least 1-2 times per year. The appeal of granite is the look of natural stone and that each slab is somewhat different. Upgrading to more detailed edges with granite is expensive since it must be done by hand labor. 3. Quartz: Quartz is rapidly gaining ground on other options. This material is typically 93 percent natural quartz and is scratch resistant. It is nonporous so it does not need sealing and is stain-resistant. A big difference between quartz and granite is the color consistency you get with quartz due to the fact that it’s man-made. Quartz is similar in cost to granite but is usually about 10 percent more than standard granite colors. Mix and match countertops: With the kitchen being used more for multiple purposes you are seeing different counter materials. As islands get larger, consider a different material for the island. This can include different shapes, colors, materials or edge treatments.

buying ANTIQUE furniture can be A ‘GREEN’ CHOICE

hile I was hibernating on the couch with the dogs, my husband handed me one of my favorite magazines, Vogue Living. On page 3 was a full-page ad with one simple statement: “Do the planet a favor ... buy antiques & vintage design.” For months, I’ve been struggling and writing articles in my mind about this very topic. Trying to find a way to explain how powerful and stylish we can be by choosing vintage over massproduced imported furniture. I would trip over terms like “ecofriendly” or “green” furniture. “Recycled ... re-purposed” ... Julie BORING! They always Shambarger sounded too utilitarian to me, strange, uncomfortable — or even worse, ugly. Shabbychic would come to mind, too. Although cute, it isn’t really the look for everyone. Part of the problem, I believe, is that a lot of “good for you/good for the planet” ideas started out with some degree of bad taste. The BellaChic_CM5.705x2.469 9/29/07 5:39 first healthy food was only for the strong at

heart. My parents made me eat carob in lieu of chocolate back in the ’70s. Scarred for life, to this day I can’t eat either. Home furnishings and clothing options were left to flea markets, thrift stores and various things made out of hemp. Vintage furniture was offered mostly its original finish, which wasn’t appealing to anyone outside of the antique trade. We didn’t consider it an option and underestimated the power of paint and faux finishing. Things have changed in a big way. Vintage is in! It made it into Vogue, and to quote one of my favorite greeting cards, “It’s true; I read it in a magazine.” The environmental impact of vintage furniture is irrefutable as well. As an example, at Bella Chic we have sold more than 500 pieces of vintage furniture. I don’t know all the stats, but I do know we have stopped at least one or two containers PM P from being imported to our country. We’ve 4.5 ft

helped save fuel and emissions by not requiring a semi to deliver those containers to our store. We’ve saved some trees along the way, too. It’s a pretty cool and simple way to look at it and in the end, it looks real cool in your home. We aren’t out to save the world at Bella or insisting on a totally green decorating culture. We are guilty of importing art and accessories from time to time. We don’t recycle everything that we can. We try. But we are suggesting an option in furniture and decorating that for once offers the style and design you are craving with the benefit of doing something positive for our planet. It’s the little choices we make that can add up. We can make a difference and look good while doing it! Julie Shambarger is an owner of Bella Chic Interiors in Carmel. preheated oven for 30 to 45 minutes, shaking pan every 5 to 7 minutes for even browning. Reduce heat when necessary to prevent burning. Brussels sprouts should be darkest brown, almost black, when done. Adjust seasoning with kosher salt, if necessary. Serve immediately.

General Manager Jay Hibbert could not settle on only one dish as the most popular at Macaroni Grill, which is at the corner of 116th Street and Keystone Avenue. Both the Pasta Milano and Penne Rustico are hugely popular, Hibbert said. The Pasta Milano features bow-tie pasta, grilled chicken, mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes in a roasted garlic cream sauce. Penne Rustico features penne pasta with prosciutto, grilled chicken and shrimp in a cheese sauce. The restaurant is operated by Brinker International, which also owns Chili’s, On the Border and Maggiano’s. The Carmel location was the first Macaroni Grill in Indiana, opening about 6 years ago. Hibbert said his restaurant is family friendly. The décor – with stone and wrought iron elements – is meant to conjure up an old Italian home. The tables are covered in paper for the kids to draw on. There’s no smoking.
