League asks Parks Board for more support By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Officials with Fall Creek Softball and Baseball asked the City of Lawrence Parks Board Dec. 11 to help GOVERNMENT their youth league continue to provide programs at Lawrence Community Park facilities off Franklin Road. Anthony Weathers, a Fall Creek Softball and Baseball board member and coach, said the league has had trouble accessing the field house, has not been able to use a scoreboard, would like more lights installed for games that go into the evening hours and would like the bathrooms
cleaned more frequently. “Right now, our kids don’t have a scoreboard,” he said. “We have one set of lights on the field and when the seasons change and it gets dark early, we have to shut our games down early because the kids can’t even see the ball.” Weathers said the league’s goal is about more than how to play baseball or softball. “It’s to teach them how to become a pillar in the community,” he said. “I mean, a lot of the kids we get have real low self-esteem issues. You know this, and we see it, and we (are) firsthand with it, and we are already giving our time, you know? I mean, if we are giving our time, all we ask for y’all is to give us what we
need to teach these kids what they need to know.” The board directed Weathers and the league to work with Parks Department Director Eric Martin. For more about the league, visit fallcreek.org. In other matters, board chair Jeff Vest asked about upcoming projects for 2025. Martin said there will be some equipment upgrades along with a new playground and shelter at Richardt Park, 4426 N Richardt Ave. Vest asked specifically about repaving the Lawrence Community Park parking lot, which Martin said is not scheduled but is in the planning stages.

TO OUR READERS: It was with great anticipation that Current Publishing debuted Current in Geist, now Current in Lawrence/Geist, on Jan. 27, 2015. There was a gratifying amount of excitement from our audience and advertising partners. Hyperlocal news presentation was the order of the day and nothing has changed in that regard. As time passed, we grew circulation, which, concurrently, gave our editors a wider berth for pursuing meaningful and useful content. Everything was firing on all cylinders, as the saying goes. Then, in 2020, along came the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced companies everywhere, Current included, to evolve and adjust in a manner that was good for business and customers. At Current, we stemmed the tide by adjusting distribution downward some-
what as postal and newsprint pricing skyrocketed. Those were the major headwinds for Current, and they haven’t necessarily abated. After much thought and discussion, we have decided, effective, Jan. 7, 2025, to move our Geist-area coverage into Current in Fishers, rename that title Current in Fishers & Geist and discontinue Current in Lawrence/Geist. Should Lawrence news that benefits the Fishers & Geist audience arise, we certainly will pursue it. The Fishers edition will be mailed to 35,580 households each Tuesday; that distribution will include parts of Geist-area ZIP codes. Ben Weir, President and CEO, and Steve Greenberg, Executive Vice President

Lawrence officials recommend weather-proofing pipes news@geistcurrent.com The City of Lawrence Utilities Department has recommended residents take time to ensure their water UTILITIES service and meters are protected against freezing temperatures as soon as possible, to reduce possible expenses from preventable property damage. “Please remember that the cost to replace frozen and broken meters are charged to the customer’s monthly bill,” the city stated in an announcement. “A little bit of effort in preventing freezing temperatures from causing broken meters is worth it in the long run as meters are not cheap to replace, along with the inconvenience of being without water for a period of time.” If a meter is outside in a meter pit in the yard, homeowners are asked to make sure the ring and lid are seated securely and
there are no gaps that could allow cold air to get into the pit and freeze the water line and meter. “A properly sealed pit will retain the natural heat from the ground inside the pit, which helps prevent freezing,” the announcement stated. “Hot air rises and cold air descends, so gaps will allow hot air out and let cold air in.” Apartment complexes and mobile home parks have private water and sewer systems that are not maintained or repaired by Lawrence Utilities, according to the announcement. The city recommends that those residents make sure they have emergency contact information for the maintenance group that manages their water and sewer systems. The city has information and tips for homeowners online at cityoflawrence.org/ utilities/water-sewer. A plumbing contractor also can help homeowners make sure their systems are ready for winter.

FHS girls basketball player’s game grows with confidence By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Fishers High School senior forward Nevaeh Dickman admitted she has struggled with confidence in the past. “But now, I feel like I’ve grown into myself as a player and know my strengths and I believe in myself more than I ever have,” Dickman said. Fishers girls basketball coach Lauren Votaw has noticed the progress. “Nevaeh has grown tremendously in her overall poise and willingness to be aggressive through contact,” Votaw said. “Nevaeh’s role is much the same as it was last year, in that we need her to step up and defend the other team’s best scorer on many nights as well as be an active presence for us on the offensive end. She is in a new leadership role this year as her teammates are looking to her in big moments. She has handled this well and continues to grow in her confidence as a leader.” Dickman said she has grown as a leader in several ways. “Learning how to communicate on the

leader because my relationships with my teammates are stronger.” The 6-foot Dickman has been averaging per-game team highs of 16.2 points on 50
percent shooting and seven rebounds for the Tigers (8-4). She averaged 10.6 ppg last season. The Tigers graduated top scorer Talia Harris last year. “Talia was obviously a huge part of our team last year and was a large part of our scoring,” Dickman said. “This year in her absence, I wouldn’t necessarily say I feel the need to score more. I think right now I’m trying to do whatever it takes to win more games, and recently that has meant scoring more. But our team this year has a lot of great pieces that can score and create for themselves and others as well, so just doing whatever I can to win games is where I’m at.” Basketball wasn’t love at first sight for Dickman, who will play for the University of Buffalo next season. “I started playing when I was really young but didn’t like it that much, so I quit for a couple years,” she said. “But in fourth grade, I tried again and I started to fall in love with it and I’ve played ever since then.” To nominate a high school student for Athlete of the Week, contact mark@ youarecurrent.com.

Nonprofit hosts Fort Ben library event for children to help make a difference
By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com The activity room at the Fort Ben Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library was filled with the holiday spirit Dec. 14 as kids and their grownups made cards, signs and gifts. The crafts weren’t for friends and family, though — they were meant to help give warmth and a little holiday joy to strangers, some of whom might be struggling in the cold winter temperatures. Seeds of Caring Indianapolis hosted the “Acts of Kindness” event. Site Director Sarah Diaz said many area families like to include volunteer and service projects in their holiday traditions and the event provided an opportunity tailored specifically for young children. She said kids are never too young to make a difference. “A belief that Seeds of Caring holds that really shows up in all of our programming is that everybody is going to be in a position to need help at some point in their life and everybody is going to be in a position to give help at some point in their life,” she said. “And so, just this idea that sometimes we need help, sometimes we can give help, is a message that we hope kids — we hope there’s a stickiness factor with that. We hope that it sticks with kids throughout their life and we know that if it does that, it can really make a difference in the long haul.” The event offered numerous ways for the kids to make a difference, such as putting together gift packages for new immigrants who might not be familiar with Indiana’s winter weather — with distribution by the nonprofit Exodus — as well as compiling “compassion kits” for unhoused people. “Those include some supplies and cold-weather necessities for neighbors who might be experiencing homelessness this time of year,” Diaz said. “Our nonprofit partners at Outreach and SafePark will be helping us to distribute those.” Another option for the kids was putting together meal kits for families. “These will be distributed by our nonprofit partner Midwest Food Bank and will include all the supplies to make a chicken

and biscuits recipe, as well as the recipe itself,” Diaz said. “And it’ll include a wish… and a note from the kiddos who are at the event.” Other craft stations had supplies for children to make items to show appreciation for people who work outdoors. “We have a station — this is a very fun and very messy station — to create thankyou signs for garbage collectors,” Diaz said. “We have all of the supplies to make just the most dazzling signs for garbage collectors.” The kids then could take the signs home

and put them up in the yard for their garbage collectors to see. Another station included supplies for a thank-you gift for mail carriers. “These are little homemade gift packages that are actually (made) out of repurposed tubes from paper towel and toilet paper and wrapping paper,” she said. “And the kiddos will have a chance to put some sweet treats in there for mail carriers, along with a note of gratitude, and then they can stick it in their mailbox over the next couple of weeks.” The event also included a sock donation
DAY OF YOUTH SERVICE COMING UP Seeds of Caring Indianapolis is hosting a MLK Day of Youth Service, set for Jan. 20, 2025, at the Madam Walker Legacy Center, 617 Indiana Ave., Indianapolis. During the event — which has a morning and an afternoon session — the nonprofit will have multiple stations for children ages 2 through 12 and their grownups to perform various acts of
service, including assembling cleaning kits for people who have moved into their first homes, making breakfast kits for people in need and creating sun catchers for seniors. The event is free, but registration is required. For more, visit seedsofcaring. org/events/2025-mlk-day-of-youth-service-indy.
drive because, Diaz said, socks are the most needed and least donated item for people in need. The donated socks, along with handmade holiday cards, will be distributed by nonprofit Horizon House. Diaz said events like Acts of Kindness are a vehicle for families to reflect on challenging topics in ways kids can understand. “What a cool opportunity to be able to provide an event that is going to be just so full of joy and also an opportunity for families to broach topics that they might otherwise find can be kind of hard to talk about with the young kids in their life,” she said. “Our events are created with age-appropriate activities and reflection questions in mind to really help families tackle some of these tougher topics — and we also don’t mind making a mess.” For more about Seeds of Caring, visit seedsofcaring.org/indianapolis. CHS graduate pays tribute to great piano men By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Craig A. Meyer was often told that he resembled Elton John. That led Meyer to create CONCERT a tribute act 15 years ago, during which he dons replicas of some of Elton’s most famous garb. The 1981 Carmel High School graduate will return to Feinstein’s cabaret in Carmel’s Hotel Carmichael on New Year’s Eve for the third consecutive year. His “Elton, Billy & Barry — They Write the Songs” shows are set for 7:30 and 10:45 p.m. “Their catalog is so rich and so deep,” Meyer said. “Billy Joel has epic songs like ‘Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.’ Barry Manilow has thoughtful songs like ‘Mandy’ and ‘Could It Be Magic” as well as fun stuff like ‘Copacabana.’ It’s such a deep catalog of music that really is the soundtrack of at least my generation on the radio.” Meyer said he tries to split the setlist as evenly as possible between the three piano men during the 75-minute shows. “In the full two-hour version, it’s a little more even, but you try to do the best you can with the time you are given,” Meyer said. “It will cover all the greats. In addition to that, I got some really great footage from my show that I get to share in the show, talking about working with Barry and being on tour with him. It’s really fun.” Meyer was part of an ensemble of two men and three women performing with Manilow during his “Showstoppers” tour in 1991-92. “He gave each of us the opportunity to step out on our own and take the stage,” Meyer said. Meyer will recount his journey in his two Feinstein’s performances. “I have fun every time I step out on stage, but performing as myself and being able to tell my story is really fun,” Meyer said. “Getting feedback from the audience in hearing my own stories is just a lot of fun.” Based in Atlanta, Meyer said visiting

Editor, As a small-business owner and a citizen, I’m deeply concerned about proposals I’m hearing the Indiana Legislature may consider next year that would expand gaming in our community. In particular, I am concerned about a proposal that would allow video gaming terminals and e-pull tabs in public places like bars, restaurants and truck stops. These machines, which are similar to slot machines, will expose families across Indiana to Vegas-like gambling in our community’s common places. Indiana is a family-friendly state. I don’t want the culture of our state to expose families across Indiana to the risks of gambling. Unlike regulated casinos, many of these establishments won’t have the resources to prevent underage use or help individuals with gambling problems, which increases the risk of addiction and financial harm. This expansion won’t benefit Indiana families but will instead line the pockets of out-of-state corporations while draining local resources. As a business owner, I know how important it is to maintain a strong community. Let’s keep Indiana on a responsible path, protecting our families and neighborhoods from this harmful gambling expansion. We must oppose these changes for the sake of our future. Barcia Alejos, Lawrence

I’ll never guess what I got you for Christmas Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Each year during the holidays, I pick a favorite Christmas column from the past 25 years that I particularly liked HUMOR and thought you’d like to read again. Or read for the first time. Or maybe the second time, but you do not remember the first time. Any of these work for me. This story begins several years ago when the UPS truck pulled up to the curb at our house. We saw the driver struggle with a huge carton the size of a big-screen TV. He maneuvered it to the front porch and left it leaning against the door. I went outside to look at it. “Who’s it for?” my wife Mary Ellen asked. I checked the label, which was addressed to me, but sometimes that sticker is misleading. Some of our credit cards are in my name, some are in Mary Ellen’s, so when a delivery is made, we are not sure who ordered it and who the gift is ultimately for. If the wrong person opens it, there goes the surprise on Christmas morning. “It says it’s for me,” I told her. “But I have no recollection of ordering anything so big. Maybe you ordered it, Mary Ellen?” “Dick, I know what it is. It’s that special item I mentioned two months ago that I wanted for Christmas. You said you found it in a catalog. Don’t you remember? I am so excited! Thank you.” “I have absolutely no memory. Can you give me a hint?” “No hints. That would ruin the surprise.” “Ruin the surprise? The gift is for you! It’s supposed to be your surprise. But you already know what it is. I’m the one who doesn’t have a clue.”
“I checked the label, which was addressed to me, but sometimes that sticker is misleading.” – DICK WOLFSIE “It doesn’t seem right to tell you. That’s not in keeping with the spirit of giving, Dick.” “OK, whisper softly in my ear and I promise I won’t tell you what you said.” It scared me a little that this made sense. “Is it a high-tech item?” I asked. “Not really,” Mary Ellen said. “Do you plug it in?” “No.” “But I don’t want to play anymore. If you guess it, I’ll have nothing to look forward to on Christmas morning. I want to see the expression on your face when I open it, and you see what you got me.” Later that morning when Mary Ellen went out grocery shopping, I opened the box. Let me tell you, it was a really neat present. I don’t think I have ever been happier with something I bought my wife. Before Mary Ellen got home, I resealed it, then giftwrapped it and placed it under the tree. Of course, now we both knew what was in the package. It will still be a surprise on Christmas morning, if we can both keep a secret.

Blueprint for Improvement: Opulent primary bath in Zionsville Commentary by Larry Greene Built in 2006 in the Hunt Country Preserve section of Zionsville, this primary bathroom featured lots of great space but lacked modern style. Our team reimagined the layout to create a luxurious retreat that makes every day feel like an opulent spa day.
After
THE BLUEPRINT • Natural elements like oak, cedar, natural stone and crystal are expertly combined with man-made components like porcelain, glass and metals for a dynamic material mix that makes a statement. • The new vanity creates a dramatic focal point thanks to custom oak cabinetry, quartzite counters and arched brass mirrors. • The hardware and fixtures convey the perfect balance of classic style with modern appeal thanks to luxe gold tones and contemporary lines. • The sauna, clad in tongue-and-groove eucalyptus, provides the ultimate at-home spa experience.
