OUR TAKES It is our position that property tax relief cannot come too soon. Recently, it was announced, the state of Indiana saw an increase in the number of foreclosures. This abysmal statistic comes following several years where Indiana was a leader in this unenviable regard. There is a silver lining in that we have actually moved down the list as states like California, Nevada and Michigan are suffering from extraordinarily high rates of foreclosure. Our state legislature is working furiously to achieve some compromise that will reduce, at least in part, the astonishing challenge of home ownership during what is increasingly being called a

recession. That said, property tax reduction plans being proposed by the governor’s office would ultimately call for a reduction in services in some municipalities. In a principled way, we support the concept that while the citizens are tightening their belts, so should their government. We encourage our leaders to spend as much time focused on how to reduce costs in a way that has the lowest impact on those who might need services in these difficult economic times; and not to focus their energies on attempting to replace tax dollars to feed bloated programs and staffs.
PERCENTAGES OF SUCCESS It is our position that our fine city should revisit its decision to reduce the overall funding for the arts as a percentage of the cities budget. Our City Council recently decided to reduce arts funding, formally 1 percent annually in the city budget, to a capped amount. This week the city of Carmel announced recommendations from the Carmel Arts Advisory Committee for the distribution of the 2008 arts funding category. While we believe that the committee did good and thoughtful work and distributed money equitably among a number of highly deserving entities, Carmel’s significant investment in civic
space and in the Arts & Design District will require more capital during its initial years of existence. We are concerned that city leadership might be penny-wise and pound-foolish. In other words, saving thousands today could ultimately cost us hundreds of thousands in tax dollars. Given the significance of the capital invested in buildings and infrastructure, nourishing a fledgling community to support them only seems prudent. Certainly we are not recommending irresponsible distributions of cash, but we urge the city to reinstitute the 1 percent guideline and adequately invest in building the community to its fullest potential.

What would Dr. Phil say? ••• About that library teaser from last week, here’s the partial scoop: Current Publishing and Woodys Library Restaurant are teaming to help raise some dough-re-mi for the Carmel Clay Public Library. The idea: a day-long Mini-marathon, Woodys-style. The eatery serves the most kick-tail mini-burgers, and we’re gonna see how many can be sold on a sunny, warm Saturday in late April or early May. We’re looking at having a flat fee to eat and partake of beverages all day, dance to some music and raise as much cash possible for the CCPL. We’ll keep you posted.

I’m confident a rapist is breaking into our house every night at 1 a.m., 2:38 a.m., and 4:12 a.m. So yes, parenting without my husband is hard, and my first reaction when I hear about an upcoming trip is always, “Ah s@#*!” On the other hand, I do enjoy the freedom that comes along with being the sole-decision maker and the last person in bed at night. I get the remote and can watch whatever fluff, non-political/science TV show I want. I’m not asked for a foot rub or back scratch at 10 p.m. I can hide in my office and play Spider Solitaire for hours if I choose. I can read my juicy smut novel in silence and not feel guilty about ignoring my spouse. Basically, he’s one less person who needs anything from me. Mostly though, and I think this is the main reason why I function a little less bitterly when he’s gone, I have no expectation of help. In other words, I know that if I want the dishes done or the coffee made, I have to do it myself. Since I’m not expecting the trash with the dirty diaper to be taken out while I’m asleep, I’m not upset when I wake up in the morning and find it still sitting in the kitchen. When I get frus-
trated with my husband, it’s usually because he didn’t fulfill an expectation of mine. When he’s gone, I have no expectations, and therefore, no disappointments. Not that I’d like him to travel more. (Please see third paragraph.) I’m fairly confident that I’d be in therapy by the second week. After all, it’s one thing to know I’ve only got to survive until Saturday, and quite another to realize no help is ever coming. I’m just saying that occasionally it’s refreshing to have a break from the demands of marriage. Not only do I have the chance to test out my single-parent survival skills, but I am reminded that my husband is an amazing father and that I, along with our children, really do need him in our lives. Plus, by the time he does return home, I could care less about what chores haven’t been done or if the kids haven’t had a bath in seven days. Daddy’s back! Daddy’s back! And that’s all that really matters. Peace out.

DEADLY BUG: A presentation on the Emerald Ash Borer in Indiana will be given at 7 p.m. March 4 at Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 Fourth Ave. SE. The Emerald Ash Borer, a new exotic beetle was discovered feeding on Ash trees in Carmel/ Clay Township on Hazel Dell Parkway in January 2006. Emerald Ash Borer larvae feed below the bark of ash trees, producing galleries that eventually girdle and kill the tree.

y husband has been traveling a lot recently for work. Mostly short trips of two or three days, but occasionally a five-nighter. Women ask me, “Is that hard when he’s gone, or do you kind of like it?” An interesting question when you think about it, as most would assume that with four small kids, being a single parent for a week would be a living hell. But truthfully, the answer is “yes” Danielle to both parts. Wilson As much as I complain about my husband, he is a tremendous help and I would not survive long without him. So when he’s away, simple routine tasks turn into monumental, dreaded events. Homework, baths, bedtime — with no other adult around to assist, my patience level quickly bottoms out. Any stalling or whining on the kids’ part literally sends me over the edge of sanity and I turn into Super Mean Mommy. “No dessert!” “No Wii!” “No breathing!” Plus, I generally sleep like crap when he’s gone because

turn help with my blood pressure. I hit a MAJOR stumbling block when I injured my ankle and am not allowed to work my lower body. I was so disappointed. I HAVE to exercise to lose weight... I was at a crossroads. I was pouting one day that I was going to have a decent upper body as I could still do weights to help with that but I really needed cardio. I have discovered the pool, not that I wanted to get in a bathing suit at this juncture but you have to do what you have to do. I feel SO much better again; it is amazing what exercise can do for you mentally as well as physically. So hopefully I can start moving forward again.  I was using this challenge to help me lose weight and get in shape, and it has turned in to so much more. My children ask when are we getting regular bagels back... never, the whole grain bagels are delicious, All but one of my four kids have come to the whole grain side. I have learned so much about healthy eating and cooking new things and I feel really good knowing I am setting my kids up for healthier habits. — Maureen Nestor

APPLY RICHER PRINCIPLES TO YOUR CHILDREN
K
udos to the Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation Department Extended School Enrichment (ESE) Program. It’s a fee-based before- and after-school program for kids of working parents. There are 11 elementary schools with facilitators at each school providing clubs and activities for children in kindergarten to fifth grade. Unlike school programs having one grade in one classroom at a time, the ESE program Becky Kapsalis has kindergarten Ask YiaYia thru fifth graders playing, studying, cooperating and sharing with each other, within the same confines. That’s challenging. The same type of challenge we face as parents. Trying to maintain a sense of importance within our children while balancing the chronological demands and coping with the emotional divides, is, at best, a juggling act and, at worst, an emotional roller coaster. I know a little bit about the ESE program because I’m one of the privileged
facilitators at Forest Dale Elementary. We’ve been trained in the NCAA’S “R.I.C.H.E.R. principles with C.A.R.E. program.” We practice and teach “Respect, Integrity, Caring, Harmony, Excellence, Responsibility with Compromise, Attitude, Recognition, Enthusiasm.” We incorporate these principles to teach the children to accept responsibility for their actions. We get the kids to think about their behavioral choices and then we help them decide which of the “RICHER principles with CARE” they would most like to identify with to enhance or adjust their behavior. We at ESE recognize the importance of responding to the children’s needs with a level of understanding that we know will make a difference in their day. These are principles that we can apply at home
too. Using the RICHER principles we can teach our children to take care of their wants thereby helping them assume responsibility for their choices without them even realizing they are learning to be reliable, respectful and resourceful. As long as their wants are legal, affordable and beneficial – letting them achieve their wants – is the greatest of all character building skills we can give them. We know how to take care of their needs! Hugs! Have a parenting topic or question? Submit it to Ask Yiayia, aka Becky Kapsalis, Certified Parent Coach and founder of P.A.R.E.N.T. DISPATCHES GOOD NEWS FOR LILLY: Eli Lilly & Co. recently got good news regarding Zyprexa. A committee of FDA advisers said the agency should approve the company’s long-acting version of the drug for use in schizophrenia patients. The findings hold particular promise for understanding the genetic underpinnings of certain diseases like malaria. — Discovery.com
A DIET OF DEAD BARN ANIMALS – NOT SO GOOD
T
wenty years ago, I was told, “Wendell, you are going to die. Get prepared. Your resting heart rate is 155, you are in atrial fib, there is seven pounds of fluid surrounding your heart, and your heart ... it has doubled in size. A heart virus. Two weeks later, I walked out completely healed. I took charge. Flashback: In 1964, at age 17, I watched as my father died from a Wendell Fowler massive coronary. Nutrition He was dead before he hit the ground. What did we know in that era about heart disease? Not much. Dad was only 47. Our diet consisted of dead animals three times a day: bacon, biscuits and sausage at breakfast; a burger at lunch; then chicken at dinner. In the ’50s, no one pulled off the skin before they ate chicken as we have learned to do. Before my death sentence, I smoked and drank liquor abusively, so my heart was weak and resembled gelatin. I couldn’t walk across the street without becoming
winded. The heart is a muscle I never exercised. I ate red meat like someone was going to take it away from me, snarling and snapping. I did, however, get over that and now I do not miss meat at all since I found out what they do to it before it graces your diner table. I refer to carbon monoxide and Red dye #40 used by the factory farms to keep meat looking fresh even when it is rotten. My blog has an indepth story on “Why we are Exhausted. Pun intended. “You’re getting old, people would say. “I’m only 40, I’d respond. “I’ve still got half my life to live and I’m going to feel like this? No way, pal. I like the taste of life more than I like the taste of dead barn animals, was my cynical retort. Since 1988, I have lost 100 pounds,
turned into a vegetarian, and exercise my heart muscle aerobically six days a week, come rain or shine. This is why I am proud to announce the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has made me a speaker in Indiana for heart disease prevention. Their message: To avoid heart disease, become a vegan. Life tastes better than partially decomposed barn animals. Anyone wish to dispute Dr. Neal Bernard, Dean Ornish and Andrew Weil? Bon appetit. STRESS MANAGEMENT CAN HELP HEALTH
The second way to approach stress management is to work on coping skills that will better equip us to handle life stressors. Inevitably, things happen in life that we cannot control or we find ourselves bogged down by life’s responsibilities. Once we are aware that we are under stress, it is important to practice good coping skills so that the problems do not become overwhelming. It is essential to have a good social support system and to utilize it when necessary. Additionally, it is important to know ourselves and to recognize what helps us to feel better when under stress. Whether it is running a few miles, getting a massage, or going shopping with a friend, the important thing is to do what works for you. By eliminating unnecessary stressors and practicing good coping skills, we can learn to manage the stress that occurs in our lives. This will not only help to preserve our emotional health, but can also have great long-term benefits on our physical well-being. Eve Olson, M.D., is the owner and founder of the Olson Center for Wellness. For more information, please e-mail askdrolson@currentincarmel.com, or call 705.1400.

lmost all adults in America can relate to the phrase, “I am so stressed out!” In recent years, researchers have found that being under chronic stress can have even more serious consequences on our health and well-being than once thought. Research shows that it can negatively impact our sleep, weight, blood pressure, heart health, and can even contribute to developing illnesses such as cancer. Learning to manage our stress is Dr. Eve Olson something that we Wellness can all benefit from physically and emotionally. There are two key ways to approach stress management. The first is to focus on eliminating stressors from our life. Sometimes it is impossible to do this, as we do not always have total control over the things that are going on. However, many of us find ourselves simply taking on too much. If you find yourself chronically stressed and overwhelmed, it can be helpful to take an inventory of your lifestyle and simplify where you can.

GREENER GADGET: The EnerJar took top prize of the design competition — both a favorite of the judges and the crowd at the Greener Gadgets Conference in New York City. The EnerJar is an easy-to-build, DIY device that accurately measures the power draw of electrical appliances. Sitting between any wall outlet and the appliance (think blowdryer versus laptop), the EnerJar helps users gain an understanding of power draw, investing them in the knowledge, and leading them to reduce their electricity use. — gizmodo.com SIGN OF THE TIMES: The forerunner of the instant photos we get today with digital cameras is going out of business. Polaroid has announced it will cease production of film for its instant cameras by the end of the year. It had already stopped making the cameras. Those of us of a certain age might remember fondly the commercials for the Polaroid One Step in the ‘70s featuring actors James Garner and Mariette Hartley. — efluxmedia.com and pcworld.com

BLUEPRINT FOR IMPROVEMENT By Larry Greene, Case Handyman & Remodeling
Answer: I would use an undermount sink. These are ideal for use with granite because of the integrated look and ease of cleaning as you can wipe away spills directly into the sink bowl. There are many other choices you will need to consider including the following options: 1. Sink material: With granite countertops there are three common choices of undermount sink material: stainless steel, cast iron and composite. Stainless steel is durable and easy to clean and comes in a mirrored or brushed finish. Make sure you select 18-guage steel or heavier. Enameled cast iron is durable and comes in a wide range of colors. For example, Kohler cast iron sinks are now available in 23 different colors. Composite sinks are gaining popularity. These sinks are made with quartz compounds mixed with resin.
INSIDE & OUT
Question: We are installing new granite countertops in our kitchen and will be including a new sink. What are the best choices and options for kitchen sinks and how much do they cost in general?
2. Sink size: The interior width of your existing sink base cabinet will determine the maximum allowable sink size. 3. Basin design: The size of your kitchen and your typical activity should determine the optimum number of sink bowls you need. For families, double-bowl sinks are the most popular choice. The other option is a triple or single bowl design. A new feature by Kohler includes a lower height divider between the bowls, resulting in easier washing of large pots and pans. Remember to consider the sink configuration in relation to the dishwasher. With double bowl sinks the garbage disposal is typically installed on the dishwasher side. 4. Cost: There are many price points to choose from but expect to spend from $200 to $600 for a good quality undermount sink and from $600-$1,000 for the more top of the line models. Have a remodeling question? Ask Larry Greene, owner of Case Handyman & Remodeling. You may e-mail him at lgreene@caseremodeling.com or call 846-2600.

ANTIQUES ARE REALLY JUST COOL OLD STUFF
A
nyone who has shopped at Bella Chic should well know Leslie Roytek by now. Cute, works out, great house / great kids and shops ALL the time. You immediately want to hate her. It’s a riot! We are so different, but she has taught me a lot. Our journey has been interesting to say the least. Her house looked beautiful when I first met her. She did it herself and should be proud. But it drove me crazy! I tried many avenues with her in the beginning. How can’t she see it, too? She would go through magazines, show me pictures and ask, “Julie, why doesn’t my house look like this?” I would tell her “the magazines show the real stuff” or Julie Shambarger Design “You can’t get “high end” without touches of vintage!” Still….nothing. Then I’d try to appeal to her fashion sense. (If you know Leslie this is a big one) Would you wear fake Channels? Never! She would laugh. All the while I’m thinking to myself, “Then why in the world would you have fake architectural salvage
on your bookshelves?” Or a new piece of furniture made to look old?” (Someone please explain that one to me.) So I started with a gift, always a good disguise. I found an old statue of Mary, from a far away garden, aged to perfection. She took it home and loved it! Perfect! It made it to one of her shelves with her “fake” antiques. I finally got her attention! Next thing she knew, she had two unmatching nightstands for her new bed from Arhaus. Above the bed we put a neat architectural piece. It came off of an old piano, and she LOVES it! We weren’t done yet. Down in her basement we found the perfect spot for a vintage console to proudly hold her family photos and double as great storage. A zebra chair here, a small table there. Bella’s pieces stand side by side with others from Indy’s trendier shops. They uplift each other. Her house started beautiful and is now BREATHTAKING!

Magazine-shoot ready. We did it! It was so healthy for me to see it through her eyes. I’m probably overexposed to the trade and underexposed to modern designs and trends. She has opened my eyes to a whole new arena for vintage — I Love It!! Like many, the antique trade did not appeal to Leslie on any level. “Antiques” to her meant one style – country. Or the pieces she would see at Home-a-Ramas were in a price range that took the fun out of it. It simply wasn’t for her. That’s where our stuff can be so much fun. It’s from the 1920s not the 1820s. Yes it’s old but not old enough to conjure prices seen on “Antique Road Show.” It’s just old cool stuff! Julie Shambarger is an owner of Bella Chic Interiors in Carmel. Its menu features a variety of traditional Spanish dishes, the most popular of which are baked goat cheese with garlic bread and beef tenderloin with crumbled blue cheese. However, in the Spanish tapas bar tradition, meals are not presented all at once or in courses, but in individual plates customers share with one another. “We thrive on small gatherings of friends who come in to share two or three plates,” owner Frank Schmitz said. “Our style of service is perfect for socialization and sharing.” The restaurant came to Indianapolis last May, expanding from its original location in St. Louis and bringing with it a unique perspective on food service. An average meal costs about $30, with plates ranging between $4 and $9 each.
