It all started with a homework assignment given by a teacher who believed there was a special spark inside that energetic 12-year old class clown who seemed to lack talent in everything he tried from sports to mathematics. “I was bombing at everything when my speech and drama teacher encouraged me to do my Elvis impression in the talent show,” Craig Tornquist laughed as he recalled that life-altering event of his childhood. “That’s the first night I ever got a round of applause and I was hooked.” In his seventh grade year at Clay Middle School, Tamara Tudor, his teacher and mentor, lobbied to get Tornquist into an independent study program, worked with him one hour every day after school and arranged for a unique final exam; to perform a 45-minute routine in front of the entire student body. “He had such a passion for entertaining,” said Tudor. “He had amazing talent but didn’t know what to do with it.” “I’ve been blessed to be around teachers that said if you’re serious about this then we’ll help you,” said Tornquist, a 1985 graduate of Carmel High School. “If it were not for the Ambassadors, CHTV, WHJE radio and student government, there’s no way I would be doing

what I am doing today.” But, the junior high homework assignment was the key that opened the door to his future, Tudor told him to spend time at the library researching all of the great comedians of the 20th century. And to learn about his heros; what they did right, as well as what they did wrong. Then, pick a group on which to model his career. “That reading assignment led me to make all kinds of decisions. One of them was to stay completely away from drugs and alcohol,” Tornquist said. Several of his favorite comedians like John Belushi and Chris Farley died as a result of drug or alcohol addiction. “I wanted to be on the team of comedians like Bill Cosby, Jay Leno and Billy Crystal that made it and lived to tell about it.” That’s the point he wants to drive home with his young audiences. He is convinced students that have a goal and a dream will decide to stay away from the negative choices because they have something to lose. He uses his creative wit to inspire youths to follow a positive path based on what they want to do, where they want to go and who they want to be. Last week, Tornquist was in town to give a humorous presentation at Carmel High School to current 9th graders as well as incoming 8th graders and their parents on the same stage he performed as a teenager. Three days after graduating from high school, Tornquist got his first break as a standup comedian
Give ‘em Five to Thrive Craig’s laughter filled lessons for parents: 1. Believe every student is gifted and talented. 2. Recognize the school from the inside 3. Talk…without holding the remote control 4. Live by Example 5. Love in Laughter…Love in Tears
and was scheduled to perform 380 shows at Kings Island in one summer. “I got paid the ripe sum of $6.25 per show,” quipped Tornquist. “I saw the tape. I think I was overpaid.” In the 90’s he tried to play the comedy club circuit but was consistently told his act was too clean. “They said, dirty it up or get out,” remembers Tornquist. So, he started looking for other markets. In the meantime, he worked full time running an inner city teen center in Michigan. “That’s when comedy and my work with teenagers came together.” His wife, pregnant with their first child, gave him the green light to follow his dreams. “That was a really cool moment in our relationship,” said Tornquist. “I’ve been doing standup comedy full time for 11 years now.” Tornquist, who lives in Mishawaka, Indiana, travels all over the country presenting his motivational speeches and is in his 8th year as host of SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions. He performs about 200 shows a year and 70% of those are for schools. He’s compiled about 40 different routines and tailors them to meet the specific needs of the organization. But, according to Tornquist, sometimes people don’t want any special message, they just want to laugh. Tornquist credits his sense of humor to his 90 year old grandmother. “She’s got such a great zest for life.” He has put 250,000 miles on his white 13-passenger van, hauls his own equipment, acts as his own road crew, and is his own booking agent. When asked if he has any aspirations of fame and fortune his reply, “I would love to do this forever.”
OUR TAKES It is our position the recent announcement by Browning Investments of significant new development outlay at the proposed 131st Street (soon recast as Main Street) and US 31 intersection signals an important step to bridge the “great divide” currently separating west Clay Township from the now vibrant downtown Carmel. Main at Meridian will serve as an important connector of east and west and indicates a strong economy up and down this significant thoroughfare. While the future prospects are bright, there are at least two important log-jams at the State level. First,

perfectly practical
Carmel and Hamilton County are still awaiting a decision from the State of Indiana regarding the type of exchanges planned. Those who are close to the situation can recite chapter and verse on the pros and cons of a diamond interchange versus a roundabout. Regardless, neither the city nor the county can move forward until the State issues a verdict. Second, there is no firm commitment by the State as to a timeline for the decisions and actions that will allow the major move transformation. For now, we look to our local leadership to cajole if not prod the State into action and commitment on these points.
It is our position that our schools are to be lauded for incorporating learning programs like Young Authors and other practical skills experiences into the curriculum. With Young Authors, students in the 1st through 5th grades take on the role of writer and tackle the creative process from concept development to artistic illustration all the way through the production tasks of publishing a book. With each at a grade-appropriate level, children must exercise and grow their ever-more challenging project management skills as they progress through the stages in this annual activity. The connection between learning and
living is the inherent value of such programs. Young Authors emphasizes the academic aspects of reading and writing while implementing the practical skills of how books are created. In the end, the children (and their parents) absorb a third premise: why books are so important in our culture. While several schools across the county have enacted this specific program which allows the student and the family to witness the skill progression and maturation from book to book and year to year, other schools are exploiting Junior Achievement or other programs to make the academic practical and the practical academic.

FROM THE BACKSHOP NOT SO FAST, sharp says Talk on the street is that Carmel City Council president Rick Sharp is rolling out a plan to run for mayor in 2011. Speculation is that this is Mayor Jim Brainard’s last term, his fourth. So, what about it? Sharp tells us nothing could be farther from the truth, although if Brainard decided against seeking a fifth term, Sharp said he wouldn’t rule out an attempt at succeeding Brainard. Sharp isn’t campaigning, but as an observer he’s not exactly disinterested in what might happen. He said he would need to know the mayor’s exact intentions before considering anything other than that which he is doing now. ••• Here’s a thought, espoused by one of our board members: What if, come general edition time, every voter that was so inclined didn’t exercise one of the choices for president and instead wrote in “none of the above.” If an idea like that gained traction, it possibly could acquire more votes than either balloted candidate or any write-in candidate. The notion is a stunning commentary, really, on the quality of those in

His lifetime medical benefits expired when the total expense eclipsed $1 million. Hamilton County residents (and countless others) banded together – with most offering of $20 – to come up with $875,000, of which $500,000 will be needed for the transplant and recovery, we’re told. Nice job, all, and go get ‘em, Michael. Keep up the good fight!

Tea time comes to Carmel The Carmel Arts Council serves tea in style to raise money for art scholarships By Barbara E. Cohen Current in Carmel
The event starts with registration at 3 p.m. and a silent auction. Tea service for 300 guests starts at 4 p.m. “We change something every year. But we always keep to the English theme, and we try to keep the food as authentically British as possible,” Ficara said. “One thing that’s really changed – and surprised us – over the years, though, is that more men now join the ladies for afternoon tea.” The event raises money that supports graduating seniors at Carmel and University high schools who plan to pursue literary, performing, instrumental and visual arts degrees. One hundred percent of the proceeds go toward the scholarships. “Call it a delightful afternoon for a good cause,” says Bachofner. The tea menu includes Devonshire cream and scones with blueberries, cranberries, currants and other fruits, served with strawberry jam; miniature fruit tarts; egg salad and chicken salad tea sandwiches and cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches. For more information, contact Bachofner at (317) 844-6033. Tickets are $20 per person, and corporate tables are available. se

Devonshire clotted cream is being flown in from England. The pastry chef is whipping up authentic English scones and finger sandwiches. Britain’s top-selling PG Tips black and flavored teas will be served in silver teapots to ladies dressed in garden-party finery. In short, the Carmel Arts Council is sparing no effort to guarantee an entertaining afternoon for everyone attending this year’s English Silver Tea May 1 at the Ritz Charles. “We started this eight years ago as a way to raise some money for scholarships, with no idea how the event would grow,” said Carmel Arts Council’s executive director, Doreen Squire Ficara. “So many people have become involved that we now are about to give scholarships of $1,500 to four local graduating seniors.”

BRINGING LIGHT OUT OF DARKNESS DAKOTA FUND UPDATE As of this writing, over $ 2,458 in cash has been received by Rich Taylor at First Merchants Bank for Dakota’s walker fund. People making a special trip to hand-deliver a check is an act of kindness almost more moving than the money itself. But more poignant than money, are the additional e-mails I received from those willing to help. Offers to purchase the equipment outright, willing donors with existing equipment as well as encouragement and advice from those with experience made the experience even more personal. - Jeff Worrell

Get A jump on finals now For Current in Westfield
With less about a month to go before final exams at Westfield and Carmel high schools, as well as several parochial schools, now is the time to start preparing, experts say. And here are six steps to ensure success at the exam table: Create an environment conducive to studying. Stop trying to convince yourself and your parents that studying with “the girls” at Starbucks is suitable study locale. Students must have no distractions. Procrastinate at your own risk. Cramming for a final is still de rigeur in many places, but cramming is useless as a stand-alone strategy. Begin your preparation seven to 10 days before the exam, especially if you are preparing for multiple exams. Consider your learning style. Auditory learners must utilize audio review tapes and group discussions. Visual learners must prepare charts, diagrams and outlines of the mate-

rial. Tactile learners must seek out models, museums or laboratory environments to reinforce the materials. Match your study strategies to the type of test the teacher administers. If you’re preparing for a multiplechoice exam, you must prepare using repetition and rote memorization with tools like flashcards. If you’re taking an essay exam, you must prepare to compare, contrast, describe and evaluate complicated concepts. Form a study group. You must not pick your social buddies for this group; rather, choose a few conscientious students that rarely missed class. Compare notes, quiz each other and keep one another on task. Freshen up your notes for the final. The notes you took in class are full of extraneous information that distracts you from the essence of the material. Now that you have the benefit of hindsight, you must process the course material as one cohesive unit. Make an outline of each day’s notes to achieve this understanding.

as it ever really sunk in how completely un-famous Jesus Christ was when He was alive on earth? He was the Son of God, yet very few knew Him. His resurrection didn’t make the public records, only private letters. His job wasn’t to tell us He was God. Jesus’ job was to tell us we have eternal life with God if we believe in Him as Bob Walters the Christ. Jesus did Spirituality not have to bluntly say, “I am God.” There is no doubt that He was, and is. He knew we’d figure it out - and believe. We have. Subsequently, Jesus has been very, very famous for a long time. During Jesus’ life on earth, the Caesars were immensely famous and powerful; people thought they were gods. They are all dead now. Jesus died and now lives – so we can live – and the scripture breathes that truth. This brings me to the errant theology of Oprah Winfrey. Bright-eyed and savvy, she, like the Caesars, is immensely famous and powerful.
“
Your paper ROCKS!
There are plenty of preachers around who think they are entertainers. Oprah has become an entertainer who thinks she is a preacher. She says there are a million ways to salvation. Her guru imagines there is nothing after death. She has completely botched the concept of God’s jealousy for us (it is a good thing, folks; not bad). She is preaching about feelings and breathing. She infers that belief is a sucker’s gambit: to wit, God just “is,” therefore we should not believe. Huh? I wonder what the meaning of “is” is, here. Oprah is telling us Jesus was mistaken when He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.” That’s John 14:6. It’s fairly famous. Jesus is famous because lines like that have endured for nearly 2,000 years in a famous place, the Bible. If you want to see a list of Oprah’s scriptural incursions and misinformation, go to www.seriousfaith.com (Brent Riggs’ blog) and search “Pastor Oprah.” My point is this: scriptural canon has survived intact for 1,600 years. I have a hunch it is going to survive Oprah.

As a result, the nation’s mortgage market is quietly undergoing a radical and potentially risky transformation that shifts liability for hundreds of billions of dollars on to the government’s books.

MY OPINION:
$162K Type: Traditional Two-Story Age: Built in 1999 Location: Near Fall Creek and Brooks School Road in Fishers Neighborhood: Brookston Place Square footage: 2401 square feet Rooms: This four bedroom home has a sizable loft, newly installed custom kitchen complete with planning desk, open kitchen and family room combination with breakfast room, covered front porch, and two-car garage with a four foot bump-out. Strengths: The price per square foot for this home is significantly less than comparable homes in Carmel. This home has been upgraded with a new kitchen, granite tile floors, a solid surface sink, maple hardwoods, and fresh paint. A similar home in Carmel would cost

common wine myths

Wine can be extremely confusing. With over 10,000 grape types being grown in more than 70 countries, it comes as no surprise that so many people are intimidated by the
headaches. A good example of this is when people typically complain of this malady, they tell me that they cannot drink RED wine because of it, and have to drink white instead. I have always found this odd, as white wines almost always contain more added sulfites than red wine.
I hope this shines a little light in a couple foggy areas for you. If you ever have any questions, feel free to stop by Vine & Table at 313 E. Carmel Dr. in Carmel. Cin Cin!

subject. Even among the world’s experts there are still many vague and uncertain answers. With so much information and innovation spanning so many languages, centuries, and cultures, it is only inevitable that a few basic truths manage to become rather widely misinterpreted over time.
1.) For a wine to be considered good, it must age.
This is simply false. The vast majority of wine (90+%) is not meant to age much longer than five years after release, and most of that will not actually improve with time. A small percentage of wine can sit five to twelve years and improve, while a minute portion of the world’s wine can age for decades (typically the most expensive bottles); some examples of these are Bordeaux Premier Crus, Burgundy Grand Crus, a small number of California Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage, some Italian super Tuscans, high end Australian shiraz and a select few Spanish gems.
2.) I’m allergic to sulfites! They give me headaches!
The fact is, sulfites (or sulfur dioxide) have never been proven to cause headaches. Several studies have been done on the subject and no correlation has ever been made. While sulfite sensitivity is an actual allergy (that less than 1% of the population suffers from), true sufferers of this experience have allergic reactions, not

By Joe Husar When preparing a cheeseboard, I select six different cheeses. If this seems like a lot of cheese, select smaller pieces rather then less cheeses. This will allow you to experiment and make comparisons as well as find new and unique pairings. During the last 10 years I have tasted over 500 cheeses and this has allowed me to taste, pair, and compare many cheeses. I still have over 50 favorites – this list does not seem to be shrinking it just continues to grow with more tasting. Tips for planning a cheeseboard: 1 When selecting cheese, vary & balance textures, color, and/or milk types. a Types of cheese: soft, semi-soft, semifirm, hard, washed rind, flavored cheese, and blue cheeses. b Color: yellow, white, colored cheeses. c Milk types: cow’s milk, goat’s milk, and sheep’s milk. 2 Select multiple versions of the same type of cheese, such as: brie-style, Swiss cheeses, goudas, blue cheeses, and cheddars. 3 When selecting cheeses, either select by milk types and styles, then pair with wine or visa versa – choose cheeses that pair well with your wines. Cheeseboard partners: 1 Fresh fruits: grapes, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and dates
2 Nuts: mixed nuts, such as cashews, almonds, and peanuts (non-flavored) 3 Crackers: assorted water crackers, flatbreads, and flavored crackers (this is not best for cheese tasting and comparison, since it will hamper your taste buds) 4 Quince Paste 5 Cheese Partners, such as Les Folies Fromage, Fruit Spreads for Cheeses (List Price: $6.99 V&T Price: $4.99) • To complement sheep’s milk cheeses, their black cherry and licorice variety adds a touch of both sweet and spice. • For Cheddar lovers out there, their blueberry spread is enhanced with wild thyme, apple pectin, and lemon juice to play off the full flavors of aged cow’s milk cheeses. • Finally, they have created a spread to enhance young, creamy goat cheeses. They have combined white fig with bay leaf and raisins. Your chevres will reach their full potential with these complementary flavors. Ingredients
Directions
For the Lobster Mac • 28 oz Dried Figs • 5 Cups Water • ½ Cup Fresh Lemon Juice • 3 Cups Sugar • 1 t. Cardamom Seeds (Ground) • 1 T. Dark Rum • 8 oz. Lingonberry Jam (Available from Vine & Table)

eat enough vegetables and fruits. You cannot expect food to last the whole day and neither will vitamins. Make sure you’re taking a vitamin that is easily digestible. Capsules, liquids and powders are generally the easiest to digest. Vitamins that are not whole-food will have more fillers and binders that make it difficult for you to digest. A nutrition store or a natural foods store would be a good source for your shopping.

BLUEPRINT FOR IMPROVEMENT By Larry Greene, Case Handyman & Remodeling Question: What are some of the “Hot” Kitchen trends you are seeing in Carmel?
Answer: Despite the trends in our overall national economy, local homeowners are still focusing on their kitchens. Kitchens have become the new central hub of the home and the first area homeowners want to remodel and expand. Consider the following trends in kitchen remodeling: 1. Customization and Upgrading Materials: Homeowners want more high-end features and customization. They are looking for a wider range of materials and upgrades above standard builder-grade materials. Backsplash tile has become more elaborate in terms of design and now typically includes a wider variety of materials and contrasting colors. Cabinets now include more trim and molding details and more decorative stained and glazed finishes. Cabinet hardware is being upgraded to include decorative knobs, pulls and hinges. 2. Opening Up and Expanding the Kitchen: Many older homes were
designed with the kitchen largely closed off from the rest of the home. Homeowners want the kitchen enlarged and opened up to the surrounding family room, dining room or living room. Many times this includes integrating the dining room by removing the doors and walls that separate it from the kitchen. Homeowners are moving away from separate formal dining rooms. Remember to use an experienced kitchen designer to help you design the space for how your family lives. 3. Island Focus: Homeowners are focusing on adding and expanding their kitchen islands. The trend is to expand the island to create a large island or peninsula to serve multiple purposes. This ranges from creating a social gathering place, a breakfast bar, a work space or a family eating area. The kitchen island has become the central area for entertaining and a place for people to sit and gather. Have a remodeling question? Ask Larry Greene, owner of Case Handyman & Remodeling. You may e-mail him at lgreene@caseremodeling.com or call 846.2600.

FRESHEN HOME DÉCOR FOR ‘THE NOW’ For Current in Westfield
Warmer weather calls for a change in your home’s decor. Update your home by bringing in sheer fabrics, pretty florals, and garden elements. Here are ways to make over your décor:
1
Lighten up! Do you have velvet drapes or a heavy corduroy sofa? Spring is the time to change them out for lighter looking alternatives. Remove the drapes and replace them with airy sheers. Slipcover the sofa or chairs with paler tones or florals.
2
Rethink the rugs. Wonderfully cozy area rugs look just right in winter. But when the temperature rises it may be time to roll them up and replace them for summer with sisal or cotton rugs in light, cool colors. (Summer is also be a good time to have heavy rugs cleaned or repaired.)
of a porch inside. Introduce a few garden chairs, accessories, and floral fabrics into a family room, for example.
5
Store the silks. Remove dusty silk flower , and instead, bring in fresh, green plants, flowering pots, or elegant orchids.
6
Re-accessorize. Clean off the shelves and begin to replace objects with an eye toward keeping the look light. Bring out your floral china or white ironstone, set up a collection of pitchers or glass, and include plants and picture frames as well.
7
Think sheer. Curtains, tablecloths, bedskirts, and pillows – all of these say “spring/summer” louder than almost any other element. Look for plain, embroidered, or printed sheer designs that complement your interiors.
3
Orient toward a view. Change the focal point away from the mantel to a view of a garden, placing the conversation grouping to take advantage of the garden scene just outside.
4
Create an inviting porch. Summer living often moves out to a porch or deck, but even if your home does not have these amenities you can get the look and feel

Smart Bag! When you think of statement bags, bold colors, crazy patterns, and exaggerated sizes may come to mind. But rarely do you find a bag that literally makes a statement - and an eco-conscious one at that. Anya Hindmarch’s I’m Not A Plastic Bag makes no qualms about the fact that it does not associate itself with harmful, environmentally unfriendly, wasteful materials. Instead, this tote is proud to be chic, sassy, and 100% reusable. Want to bring the message along with you? –www.shefinds.com Got Ring Around the Collar? Shout it out with Shout! Or use good oldfashioned blueing for whiter whites. Use Bluette brand and put it in the additive compartment of the washing machine. Like bleach, blueing should always be diluted before touching your duds. –www.men.style.com
Power of the Palette: Have a spring fling with color! Spring’s lush palette is saturated with a rich spectrum of splashy blues and greens, blushing pinks, notso-mellow yellows and flashy fuchsias. Heavenly hues stand alone in bold solids, and colors have a play date in brightly patterned tops and frocks. Visit www. myshape.com to find the best colors, patterns and fits for your figure. – www.myshape.com TIE ONE ON – Gents, the skinny-tie trend haa been on the scene for some time, and will be around for quite a bit longer, apparently. We saw them at the Oscars and Golden Globes on the likes of Matt Dillon and Johnathan Rhys-Meyers, on countless runways, and on the hippest guys on the street. They may be challenging to wear, but they have a distinctive look that makes them a favorite. A tiny bit geek, a tiny bit chic, skinny ties have an attitude that’s all their own. These skinny designer ties aren’t just available in black anymore. There is a slight Miami Vice groove going on with colorful ties in florals, stripes, and tiny, dense geometric patterns, and they are complemented by linen suits, deep vnecked sweater separates, lightweight gray jackets, and loose shorts. -mensflair.com

By Barbara E. Cohen Current In Carmel Spring ushers in the new season of art exhibitions all over town. Two shows opening this weekend offer a glimpse into what artists living and working in Hamilton County have been up to during the dark days of winter. In Westfield, Gallery One36 continues to provide an opportunity to see – and buy – paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics and mixed-media art by some of the most engaging and productive artists working in central Indiana today. In “Unaware,” which opens on Saturday, discover artworks by gallery owner Katherine Kemp and guest artists Kyle Ragsdale, Evan Morrow Rogers, Sam Sartorius, Catherine Schlebecker, Shannon McClane and Amy Falstrom. These contemporary painters, sculptors and ceramicists work in abstract, figural, fantasy and three-dimensional forms, which Kemp has chosen to display with a room dedicated to the work of each artist. Join Kemp for an artist’s reception at the gallery (136 E. Main St., Westfield) between 6 and 9 p.m. on Saturday, to meet Falstrom, Ragsdale, McClaine and Schlebecker in person. Visit the gallery’s Web site at www.galleryone36.com or call (317) 867-4139 for more information. At the Stutz Business Center, members

Getting hit by a car is the second leading cause of injury-related deaths among children 5 to 9 years old.
