Kids being overly and publicly berated, others suffering horrific sexual abuses, still others being targets for physical abuse. In sports alone. It happens in some form or fashion every day the world over. It doesn’t have to be that way, and it won’t be for long if three Carmel businessmen have their way. Local entrepreneurs Terry Anker, Jerrod Carter and Kent Burns recently announced the launch of a company aimed at delivering high-quality online training focused on the care and protection of individuals in occupational and recreational settings. The company, CrossConfirm (www. crossconfirm.com), is a public/private partnership with the American Red Cross and Respect in Sport, a partner of the Canadian Red Cross. Anker, a well-known Carmel businessman and investor, has successfully started, operated and spun-off many enterprises during the past 20 years. Carter comes as a veteran of several early stage and entrepreneurial companies, while Burns just wrapped up a winning eight-year stint as co-owner of one of the top executive recruiting firms in the country. CrossConfirm’s portfolio includes the exciting Respect in Sport USA platform that equips coaches and vol-

unteers in youth sports to recognize and respond to the signs of bullying, harassment, neglect and various forms of abuse that occur on and off the field. Dr. Emily Booth, director of the American Red Cross online training efforts, stated that “approximately 70 percent of all kids who participate in youth sports quit by the age of 13. Many cite the very reasons that this innovative coursework is designed to address.” Respect in Sport was the inspiration of National Hockey League standout Sheldon Kennedy. Aside from his considerable success on the ice, Kennedy is best known for his 1996 revelation of sexual abuse by a longtime former juniors coach. The Sheldon Kennedy Story aired in 1999, and his autobiography, “Why I Didn’t Say Anything - The Sheldon Kennedy Story,” followed in 2006. “We’re extremely excited that our company, based in Carmel, Ind. is bringing such an important program about protecting kids in sports to the United States,” Anker said. The self-paced program is comprised of six 30-minute segments and is completed entirely on line. The technology runs on virtually any computer and does not require a highspeed Internet connection. “The convenience of Respect in Sport is particularly appealing to busy coaches and volunteers”, Carter said. “Statistics show that 92 percent of the coaches who complete Respect in Sport say that they are better prepared to recognize the warning signs and know how to respond.”

Nearly all were male coaches victimizing girls. At least 98 of these coaches continued to coach or teach. - The Seattle Times

LAUNCH EVENT CrossConfirm will host the launch of Respect in Sport USA from 7:30 to 9 AM on Thursday at the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis, 441 East 10th Street. In attendance will be a high-profile audience comprised of leaders in the sports, education, healthcare, political, faith-based and law enforcement communities. Former NFL great Barry Krauss, a Carmel resident and the reigning president of the NFL Alumni Association; Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi; and the aforementioned Kennedy will be among of the featured speakers. “Our aim is to create awareness and equip our audience with basic information to begin evangelizing this program in their spheres of influence. It is also to celebrate the public/private partnership between CrossConfirm and the American Red Cross that has been created as part of this process,” co-founder Kent Burns said.

OUR TAKES It is our position that the Carmel Redevelopment Commission has made the correct move in hiring Hirons & Co. as the marketing agency of record for various CRC efforts, not the least of which is the Arts & Design District. The move comes at a critical time, and could be the fulcrum needed to drive even more traffic – and wallets – to the redeveloped area that has shown itself to be quite popular and equally troubled. In recent weeks, we’ve heard added grumbling from merchants about a perceived lack of “urgent support” from city government. So just in the nick of time, with yet another business,

Companies ranging from these carriers to law firms to risk management consultants all are engaged in unsolicited e-mail marketing blasts and other direct marketing approaches. Although most of these folks are likely above board, profiteers likely are in the mix. Caveat Emptor is the phrase of the day. Make prudent financial decisions about earthquake products and services in careful conjunction with consideration of less exotic and more likely natural events such as tornados, hail and fire.

If you believe statistics are for losers, stop reading. The facts: The Mortgage Bankers Association’s 2007 fourth-quarter survey reports that foreclosures came to 2.04 percent of all mortgages. Many of those were speculators seeking flip profits rather than homeowners losing a dream house. During the quarter, only 0.83 percent of homes entered the foreclosure process. It may get worse; in March, “foreclosure filings, default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions rose 5 percent,” Reuters reports. But let’s keep all this in perspective: Ninety-eight percent of borrowers are not in foreclosure. Only a small percentage of them are even late on payments. This so-called crisis, we believe, is one way for the candidates to justify making government even more gargantuan. We’ll not have it. The divorce rate is already at 50%. So though most of us are past this stage in our lives, marriage is just around the corner for some of our kids. Maybe we need to start rethinking the taboo of living together before marriage and look at it as a healthy, positive, first step toward a long-term commitment. Young Entrepreneur’s Website: Hamilton County Entrepreneurship Education (HCEE) has launched a website for high school students interested in entrepreneurship and business. The website was made possible by a grant from the AT & T Foundation and provides a unique opportunity for Hamilton County high school students. The site features a Forum where students can interact with guest entrepreneurs and hold discussions with each other. A Resource section on the site includes information about entrepreneurship in Indiana and information that can assist students in developing business plans. An Events Calendar lists upcoming events of interest that are related to entrepreneurship. The Gallery will feature photos of Hamilton County High School students that participate in HCEE sponsored activities and events. Membership is free. ne of “Carmel’s own” is soon to receive a prestigious award from the American Liver Foundation for her tireless efforts to spread her Gospel:” BE AN ORGAN DONOR!” Ila Badger will be honored at the American Liver Foundation’s SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE on May 3 at the Westin Hotel. She’s the first “non doctor” to be so honored. The event is being co-chaired by two other longtime Carmelites, Alan and Sue Potasnik (it was Alan Danny who first tipped me off about this). O’Malia Ila and her husband, Jack, 40year Carmel residents, have been spreading their Gospel together since Ila received a long-awaited liver transplant in June of 2001. Diagnosed

in 1991 with primary sclerosing cholangitis, an autoimmune disease that gradually destroys the liver, Ila waited eight years to be put on the waiting list for a transplant. From there it took two more years to actually undergo the procedure. She’s being honored because, with Jack, she has spoken to three to four organizations per month about the urgency of the organ donor program. Ila marvels at the progress that’s been made with liver transplants in the seven years since hers. “I was on the waiting list two years; today it’s about 40 days. The surgery was nine hours. Today it’s three to four. I received 28 units of blood. Now it’s down to about three.” The O’Malia and Badger families are connected in a very intimate and typically Carmel way. In 1979, the Badgers lost their 10- year old son, Mark, to cancer. The Carmel Dads’ Club had bought a large tract it was going to develop for athletic fields just off 131st Street east of Gray Road. The CDC board of directors voted to name the park after Mark. And Jack oversaw

the development of the park and soccer fields from that point on. In 1985, my brother, David, and his wife, Cindy, lost their 3-year-old old son, Matt, to an aneurysm. In 1987, our cousin, Bill Weghorst, then coach of the Carmel Legion Baseball team, spearheaded an effort to build a baseball field in the park for the Legion (and at the time for Carmel High School’s team) and BADGER name it after Matt O’Malia. The Badgers were very supportive of that effort as well. Vintage Carmel! I plan to be at the event and expect to see many fellow Carmel citizens there. Interested? Profit Plunges: Bank of America Corp.’s quarterly profits plunged 77 percent as the bank set aside more cash for bad loans and took another write-down on its mortgage-related portfolio, the company spokespersons said Monday. The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank managed to stay in the black: Net income fell to $1.21 billion, or 23 cents a share, from $5.26 billion, or $1.16 a share, a year ago. The first-quarter results, however, were worse than expected, as analysts surveyed by earnings tracker Thomson Financial had forecast profits of 41 cents a share. - Money Magazine

NEW PRINCIPAL FOR COLLEGE WOOD: The Carmel Clay School Board has approved the hiring of Deanna Pitman, 36, as principal of College Wood Elementary School. Pitman is the current assistant principal PITMAN at Creekside Middle School, a position she has held since 2004. Pitman replaces the current College Wood principal, Jon Teuscher, who is retiring at the end of this school year. Twelve members of Carmel High School’s newspaper and yearbook staffs attended the National Scholastic Press Association convention in Anaheim, California. Student journalists who participated were Rosemary Boeglin, Cindy Brentlinger, Jennifer Cannady, Tim Chai, Bennett Fuson, Michelle Hu, Navya Kumar, Lexi Muir, Maris Schiess, Julia Schiffman, Michael Wang and Nate Woeste. Student Earns Perfect ACT Score: Carmel High School junior Kevin Wang, son of Mu Wang and Jirong Lu, was the only student in Indiana, and one of only 56 in the nation, to earn a perfect score of WANG 36 on the February ACT college-admissions test. f you do nothing else, make these life-lengthening habits part of your daily routine:

This is said to reduce the chance for myopia. Try this: Hold up a finger or a pencil in front of you, about six inches away. Choose a prominent object, e.g. a chimney, tree, flag, etc. at least 20 feet away. Alternate your focus between the near and far objects, looking at each for about two seconds at a time. That all ended, however, after I attended a Riedel Crystal tasting. Riedel stemware is the design by which all others are measured. The food at most Mexican restaurants has been extremely Americanized, but in the markets you will find things youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never heard of, foods that can really take you on a culinary trip to Mexico. Some would say it is your civil duty to pay homage to a people, who against monumental odds, stopped the French takeover of the Americas. he Sierra Norte Mountains in the Puebla Region of Mexico, most well known for its fruits and fruit wines, provides some of the most diverse culinary creations in the country. The inhabitants of this area, pride themselves on their time-honored recipes. One of the most common recipes from this region is for Molotes. Molotes are made by stuffing a masa dough, similar to making a tamale or chalupa. They can be filled with a variety of fillings, the most common being: chorizo, sliced potato with epazote, and squash blossoms.

Tequila is one of only two denominations of origin (or D.O.) spirits in North America. Blancoâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Blanco tequilas are the rawest expression of the spirit (as they go directly from the still to the bottle) and for this reason are a favorite of tequila purists. Sometimes they need be cut with a bit of spring or distilled water to bring the proof down to 80. They will always be clear and almost never spend any time maturing in casks.

Reposadoâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Tequilas with this designation must spend a minimum of 60 days or up to one year in oak casks. Aging will always add color and complexity to the spirit, as well as soften it a bit. Most tequilas are aged in old American Bourbon barrels, while a few age in new oak casks.

Anejo & Extra Anejoâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Typically the most expensive and highest quality, Anejo tequila must spend at least one year maturing in oak, but usually sits for 18 months to two years. The best tequilas (Extra Anejo) will be left to age for five or six years, adding depth and complexity to the finished product. Always remember to look for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;100% agaveâ&#x20AC;? on the label (even on the Anejo) and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget that terms like â&#x20AC;&#x153;platinumâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;goldâ&#x20AC;? have zero bearing on a tequilaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quality; these are used as marketing buzzwords only. With such a wide range of exhibitions opening, one is going to be right up your alley. “Eclectic-ism” at the Community Museum Laboratory of Herron School of Art and Design, IUPUI, is about work participants call art “that does not hold rigidly to a single paradigm or a set of assumptions, but instead draws upon multiple theories, styles or ideas.” Fifteen students who feel they don’t fit in with the “ideal” art student population have joined forces for this event. Lorie Lee Andrews, a mother of three from Carmel, grew up in Puerto Rico and taught preschool at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis before returning to college for a fine arts degree. Teresa Murphy, Noblesville, graduated from Hamilton Southeastern High School and moved away until a divorce brought her and her daughter home to Indiana. Since 2005, she’s been studying art education at Herron, “I’m so happy to have a group like NonTraditional Students,” Murphy said. “We encourage each other in so many ways,

Directions Cook pasta as directed on package; reserve 1/4 cup cooking water. Heat cooking spray in a large skillet

over medium-low heat. Sauté onion and pepper until tender, about 7 minutes. Raise heat to medium and add turkey; cook until browned, about 8 minutes. Stir in marinara, reduce heat and stir occasionally, until sauce comes to a low simmer, about 6 minutes. Mix 1/2 cup sauce with reserved water in a bowl; toss pasta and sauce; divide among 4 bowls. You have your bags packed and are ready to head out for a week of vacation. Bathing suit? Check. Camera? Check. The right “someone” to care for the dog in your absence? Uh-oh. Finding the right place to board your dog takes research to make sure the dog’s vacation is as fulfilling as yours. All reputable dog boarding facilities will require that your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, including distemper and rabies, and most also require bordetella to prevent canine cough. Your options: 1. Traditional boarding facilities offer a safe environment for your dog, who will spend most of his day in a cage and have little to no interaction with other boarders. Caring staff will feed, water and let your dog out to do his business, but they may charge extra for walks, one-on-one playtime, or administering medications. Floors and all contact surfaces should be swept and mopped frequently with chemicals that are dog-safe yet provide optimal cleaning and prevent unwanted smells. Finally, take your dog to tour the facility and perhaps let him spend a day before you leave him for an extended stay. Yes, Virginia, cats and birds can live together harmoniously in the same house, as long as their owners are willing to take the precautions that are necessary for the safety of both. If you have a cat and want a bird, or vice versa, you should understand that in nature, the two would be enemies - predator and prey. While the natural roles of your pets can be altered, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important that both are kept under close supervision to ensure that no disputes arise. If your cat shows an interest in hunting your bird, try giving it a quick spritz with

a water bottle. Most of the time, this will be enough to curb a catâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s predatory instincts after a while. Likewise, if your bird shows aggression to your cat, discipline is in order. With consistent training, both pets should learn to tolerate each other rather quickly. ou’re probably wondering why a dazzling urban sophisticate such as me drives a vehicle so utilitarian, so rural, so non-dazzling as a Ford pickup truck. OK, so you’re not wondering. Well, I’m going to tell you anyway. I drive a pickup for practical reasons. It’s splendid for hauling the Christmas tree off to be recycled. There’s no better vehicle for driving someplace with your dog. And I drive one Mike Redmond for safety reasons, Humor because this time of year, in Indiana, getting behind the wheel of something large is really the only prudent way to drive. It is in my neighborhood, anyway, where a pickup truck is about the only civilian vehicle that won’t disappear into the waterfilled hole in the alley behind my garage. The hole in the alley is about 15 feet long and in a couple of places, going on six inches deep – although you can’t really tell about the depth. This makes it a small but treacherous pond, and one which generates lots of extra business for the neighborhood Firestone dealer. In fact, I’ve taken to calling it Lake Realignment. Actually, it is not because of the city that the alley goes unpaved. It is because some of my neighbors are those nose-in-the-air types who seem to have no interests other than lecturing the rest of us about preserving the historic character of our neighborhood, including the alleys. Now, you’ll notice I have avoided calling the lake in the alley what I always called such things in the past, namely a chuckhole. I’m still smarting from the last time I used the word chuckhole and got all kinds of mail from people insisting that chuckholes are properly called potholes, and chiding me for such a gooberish locution. It should be noted that about half these letters were from guys named Charles. A few of them were sufficiently insulting as to make the writers seem like holes of another sort. I grew up calling these things chuckholes, so named after the woodchucks that dug big holes directly in the paths of horses. Never mind asking how much wood a woodchuck could chuck. I want to know where he chucked the paving material so I can bring it back to the alley. I have just the truck for the job.
