CCS officials refute parents’ concerns about critical race theory being promoted in schools By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Several parents of students in Carmel Clay Schools attended the April 26 school board meeting to express EDUCATION concern about the recent creation of a diversity, equity and inclusion officer position and what many said they perceive as critical race theory being promoted in schools. Later in the meeting, CCS officials said many of the concerns were based on misinformation and that the district does not teach critical race theory, which promotes the idea that white supremacy is enabled through the U.S. legal system. Approximately a dozen parents and grandparents shared their thoughts on the matter, with most sharing concerns about the direction of the district. Several ended their comments with “Not my child, not my school!” as others in the crowd cheered and applauded. Two spoke in support of the school’s DEI efforts. Six speakers were not permitted to address the school board, because the time limit for public comment had been reached. Among the speakers was CCS parent Kelly Moulton, who said Carmel High School “has been absolute hell” for her daughter after the then-freshman “stood up for her beliefs” and shared that she disagreed with a policy that allows transgender girls to use the girls restroom. This resulted in the transgender student taking to social media to publicly bully Moulton’s daughter, who was called names and told to kill herself, Moulton said. Moulton said she did not feel the school supported her daughter during the ordeal. “The goal may be to eradicate hate by fighting intolerance, which sounds great and I believe we all want, but who determines what hate and intolerance look like? Who hands down the verdict of hate or bigotry? Are we dividing and destroying our schools with the ill-fated pursuit of equality?” Moulton said. “By not valuing diversity

and all lifestyles and thought, by giving labels and powers to these ideologies, CCS is creating more division and empowering certain groups to terrorize those who don’t think or act like them.” She said children deserve a fact-based education rather than political agendas or indoctrination. “Teachers are here to teach our students to read, write and arithmetic, how to study hard and do their best, no matter their gender, skin color or sexual orientation,” Moulton said. “Children need to be taught to think for themselves, not what to think.” Later in the meeting — before a presentation by the DEI officer and after nearly all of the crowd had left — CCS Supt. Michael Beresford said that many of the parents’ concerns were based on untruths. He said the DEI officer is not involved in selecting or developing curriculum and that critical race theory is not being taught in the classroom. He said he agreed that teachers should teach kids how to think, not what to think. “That’s precisely what our teachers do,” he said. “It’s to build a skill set, a way to weigh and balance information, to be able to have civil discourse to grow and learn as young people who are going to go into a

diverse and global world.” He said he was most troubled by the allegations that CCS is promoting the idea that certain students should feel shame because of their race. “People somehow think DEI work is built on guilt and shame, that it’s to guilt and shame white people or guilt and shame people for some agenda. That’s not going to make a positive difference in anyone’s life,” he said. “We are completely against anything that would promote guilt and shame in white students or white teachers. We wouldn’t wish that on any human being, regardless of race, culture or religion. We want every student to feel welcome and that their identity is safe in their classrooms.” Before giving a report on DEI initiatives, DEI Officer Terri Roberts-Leonard said she believes most of the concerns presented at the meeting were based on misinformation. “The good thing about this evening was that most of what people were upset about is not true, so once we can get the truth out there, maybe some of that rage will subside,” Roberts-Leonard said. “We have no hidden agendas. I’ve never questioned if parents know what’s best for their children.”

The GOAT owner ‘exploring alternatives’ after BZA denial By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youareacurrent.com The GOAT has closed its doors after the Carmel Board of Zoning appeals on April 26 denied a variance request CITY NEWS that would have allowed it to operate in a residentially zoned area. The tavern opened in July 2020 in a building at 220 2nd St. SW that previously housed Bub’s Cafe. The cafe had received a variance to operate in a residentially zoned area if it limited its hours to 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., but city officials said they inadvertently overlooked the conditional variance when they approved plans for the tavern. The site is the only parcel with residential zoning along the Monon Greenway in Carmel’s downtown and Midtown areas. Kevin Paul, owner of The GOAT, did not respond to a request for comment on the BZA decision, but his attorney, Dave Coots, said Paul is “exploring alternatives” for the site. After the use variance was denied, Coots asked the BZA to vote on some of the other variance requests so they could be in place if the property is converted into a residence or other use. The BZA tabled a vote on the other requests. The BZA decision is final at the city level, but Paul could take the matter to court and ask a judge to rule on the BZA’s actions. City officials plan to monitor the site to ensure The GOAT abides by the BZA’s ruling, according to Dept. of Community Services Director Mike Hollibaugh. “The city respect’s the Board of Zoning Appeals decision to deny the use variance for The GOAT,” he stated. “The Dept. of Community Services will monitor the situation and ensure compliance with the decision.” Soon after The GOAT opened, city officials began receiving complaints from neighbors about loud noise late into the night, urination and vomiting on adjacent private property and other issues. In December, the city ordered The GOAT to abide by the previous variance and close by 2 p.m. daily but reversed course two days later, allowing the tavern to operate into the evening if it reduced its hours, provided security to prevent many of the recurring problems and agreed to several other measures. Complaints from neighboring residents sharply decreased in recent months, but the majority of BZA members didn’t feel The

GOAT had proven to be a good fit in the area. “This is a whole mess. This should’ve never been allowed to happen. They never should have been allowed to open, and we’re being asked to legitimize a bad situation,” BZA President Alan Potasnik said during the meeting. In its staff report to the BZA, the city’s Dept. of Community Services recommended approval of the use variance for a six-month trial period as long as The GOAT ownership agreed to an updated set of commitments. After six months, the BZA would meet again to review the situation and determine next steps. The updated commitments stated that The GOAT would be shut down if it violated a commitment and didn’t remedy it within 24 hours, and that if the occupancy limit was exceeded on more than one occasion, the tavern would be required to close immediately. It also stated that The GOAT must pay $5,000 per violation. Paul told the BZA that he had agreed to the updated commitments. He said he had already gone to great lengths to address the problem and would take additional action if needed. “If we think there’s something that will help, we’ll certainly invest the time, money and energy in accomplishing it, without question,” Paul said. BZA member Leo Dierckman cast the lone vote in favor of the use variance. He said if The GOAT could prove it could follow the strict list of commitments for six months, it deserved to remain open. “I don’t know if Kevin Paul will be back here in six months, because he may have elected at that point to already close the business,” Dierckman said. “(The commitments) are very serious, but they’re proper given the set of circumstances.”

State urges vaccination as demand decreases By Jarred Meeks jarred@youarecurrent.com Indiana state health officials urge Hoosiers to get vaccinated for COVID-19 as demand for immunizations PANDEMIC decreases and COVID-19 variants increase. During an April 28 virtual briefing, Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box said demand for vaccines has declined in the weeks following the state’s move to open eligibility to all residents 16 and older. Because supply is beginning to outpace demand, the Indiana State Dept. of Health is directing vaccination clinics with openings not to require appointments and accept walk-ins, although appointments are still encouraged. The dwindling demand for vaccinations comes after approximately one-third of eligible Indiana residents have been fully vaccinated. As of April 28, a total of 4,114,426 doses had been administered in Indiana, including 2,315,568 first doses. A total of 1,798,858 individuals were fully vaccinated. State health officials also said variants of COVID-19 have increased across the state and account for 31.7 percent of new cases. Box said the ISDH plans to include the prevalence of variants on its coronavirus dashboard, coronavirus.in.gov. State health officials said it’s important for Indiana residents to get vaccinated to slow the spread of new variants, which data suggests are more lethal and spread more easily than original variants. They said data collected from people who have been vaccinated shows residents are significantly more susceptible to the disease if they don’t get vaccinated. “We are seeing the greatest increase in cases right now among people in their 20s and 30s, where our vaccination numbers are significantly lower,” ISDH Chief Medical Officer Lindsay Weaver said. “Since March 1, we saw a 130 percent increase (in cases) in 30- to 39-year-olds and a 93 percent increase in 20- to 29-year-olds.” A statewide hospital census revealed only 2.5 percent of hospitalized COVID-19 patients since March 1 had been fully vaccinated. Amendment would require council OK of land purchases By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youareacurrent.com A proposed $25 million bond to fund land acquisition for future redevelopment, roundabout art, a light show CITY NEWS on the Midtown water tower and other projects is heading back to the Carmel City Council with a favorable recommendation on April 27 from the council’s finance committee. The council was set to vote on the bonds, which will be repaid through tax increment financing, at its May 3 meeting. The largest allocation Aasen — $13.4 million — is to purchase sites being eyed by the Carmel Redevelopment Commission, primarily in the Arts & Design District, Midtown, City Center and Home Place. The bond language doesn’t require the funds to be used to purchase specific properties, but earlier this year city councilors received a list — which was not released publicly — of 26 potential parcels ranging in estimated price from $16,000 to $3.7 million. Because the funds aren’t tied to specific projects, councilor and finance committee member Adam Aasen proposed an amendment that would require land purchases using bond funds to come before the city council for a vote. The committee approved the amendment. “This is not a blank check. This is transparency,” he said April 29. “Everything in this bond has been out and open in the public and thoroughly vetted. Property acquisition is going to be out and open.” Currently, council members are notified when the CRC plans to purchase property, and any councilor can request the purchase come before the council for a final vote. The proposed amendment will make a council vote automatic for properties associated with the bond. Aasen said he may have voted against the bonds if his amendment was not approved. In February, Aasen, whose family owned Donatello’s Italian Restaurant in the Arts & Design District at the time, had strong reservations about some of the proposed sites on the land acquisition list because they included “desirable properties” full of small businesses that might have

trouble finding another affordable place in Carmel if displaced. The buildings that housed Donatello’s and several other small businesses was on the list presented to council, but in February, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said they were no longer on the table. “We’ve made the decision not to proceed with property acquisition (of those buildings) at this time,” Brainard said. “Those are very, very old buildings, and they’re at the end of their useful life. I’d anticipate the owners would want to see them redeveloped at some point in the future, but that is not property that the city Brainard is going to pursue if the property acquisition part of the TIF bond is approved.” Aasen, whose restaurant closed April 3 after more than 10 years in business, said he’s had open and honest conversations with Brainard and CRC Director Henry Mestetsky as councilors reviewed the bonds during the past few months, which led — along with approval of his amendment — to his decision to support the bonds. The process has even led to improved trust with city officials, Aasen said. Shortly after he took office in January 2020, the city announced that Hotel Carmichael, which it developed with Pedcor Companies, was going to cost 46 percent more than estimated when the council approved its funding. Aasen said that led to some lost trust with the Brainard administration. Not so this time around, he said. “I think this process went really well,” he said. “Maybe it’s gone a long way to repair some of the trust from the Hotel Carmichael (issue).”

Day of Prayer set for May 6 By Grady Michael Gaynor news@currentincarmel.com Members of the community are invited to join and observe the National Day of Prayer from noon to 1 p.m. May 6 at CarFAITH mel City Hall at 1 Civic Square. After being put on hold last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the theme of this year’s observance comes from 2 Corinthians 3:17: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” The National Day of Prayer has been observed nationwide annually since signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1952. In 1988, under President Ronald Reagan, the first Thursday of May was designated for the day of prayer. The event was not observed in Carmel until 1992 under the mayorship of Jane Reiman.

The National Day of Prayer will begin with opening remarks by Mayor Jim Brainard and a rendition of “God Bless America” by Phil Johnston. Following the opening ceremonies, Chairman Dave Forbes will lead attendees in prayer. “The National Day of Prayer is an organized, focused day on praying for all the needs of our country, our state and our city,” Forbes said. “I’m hoping for 50 to 60 or more people from the faith community to gather from backgrounds of different beliefs, but yet still focused on crying out and praying to God that he will bless America and meet her needs.” The COVID-19 protocols set in place by the city will be observed to ensure the gathering is as safe as possible. General information and the locations of other gatherings can be found at nationaldayofprayer.org, including information on a national May 6 broadcast.

The History of Sunflowers — Spring Green Garden Club of Carmel has invited former president of The Garden Club of Indiana and local gardening expert Joyce Bulington to present The History of Sunflowers. Bulington will trace the history of sunflowers from their early uses and cultivation to today’s popularity in modern logos and weddings. The virtual event is set for 6:30 p.m. May 20 on Zoom. To be included, RSVP to SGGC1972@gmail.com by May 15.

Firefighter Renee Butts enjoys working alongside husband, son at CFD By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com

MEET RENEE BUTTS

Firefighters often describe their bond like a family. For Renee Butts, that’s especially true. In 1997 Renee joined the Carmel Fire Dept., where she worked alongside Joe Butts, the man who would become her husband in 2002. Five years ago, her son, Drew, became a CFD firefighter as well. Renee and her son have never been on the same crew, meaning their 24-hour shifts typically weren’t aligned. But when Renee would pick up an overtime shift, she would often request to work with Drew at Station 45. “I never dreamed when I got hired 24 years ago that I would be working on the same piece of equipment as my son. That’s so surreal,” she said. “It’s crazy, and I could not be more proud. It sounds so cheesy when I say it, but I love it. Those are the best days of my career.” In April, Renee became the CFD public education officer, an administrative role that comes with regular office hours. It was tough to leave the firehouse, she said, but she’s excited about her new role of teaching children about fire safety and assisting community members in a new way, especially since her new office is housed in the same building as Station 45.

CFD firefighters Renee Butts and her son, Drew Butts, pause during a shift they worked together. They don’t usually work the same shift, but they take a selfie each time they do. (Submitted photo)

THE ROAD TO CFD

Renee, 52, grew up in Romney, a tiny unincorporated community near Lafayette, the youngest of four daughters. Her father was a volunteer firefighter, and she enjoyed hearing his stories and occasionally going on runs with him. But firefighting wasn’t her first career choice. After graduating from McCutcheon High School and attending Purdue University, she took a job as a control center clerk at St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel, where she worked alongside then-CFD Chief Doug Callahan, who was an overnight security guard. Eventually, she decided she wanted to give firefighting a try and had her heart set on Carmel. So, it was especially painful when she went through the application process and didn’t make the cut. “I just knew this is where I wanted to work and this is where I was going to be

and get hired,” she said. “Then I got a letter saying I didn’t make it, which was crushing.” Soon, however, another firefighter got injured and couldn’t return to duty, and because Butts was already an EMT, she was CFD’s first call. She accepted the job immediately.

ONE OF THE GUYS

Renee, who said she grew up in “a small town full of boys,” wasn’t the first female firefighter in Carmel, but she was among the very few, especially at first. But that’s never been an issue, she said. “I’ve never been mistreated, not one time. I just wouldn’t tolerate that,” she said. “They’ve never treated me any different. I know if somebody doesn’t like me, it’s not because I’m a girl, it’s because our personalities don’t match, and I’m OK with that.” She said all new firefighters — male or female — have to prove themselves able to work on their crew. She recalled one of those moments for her, when she was tasked with helping to carry a very large man down six flights of stairs after a construction accident. “I would’ve let my arms fall out of their sockets before I would’ve let go,” Renee said. “When I got down, I couldn’t un-grip my fingers. (Then a veteran firefighter) gave me one of the best compliments of my career. He said, ‘You can work with me any day.’ It wasn’t because I was a girl, but because I was brand new, and he wants to see what you’re made of.”

‘THEY ALL GET IT’

Renee had two school-age children when she joined CFD, and the 24-hour shifts made finding child care a challenge. She knew that her schedule would cause her to miss some birthdays and holidays, but her kids were understanding. “They loved the fact that I was fulfilling my destiny,” she said. “They embraced it.” Drew, 32, a Marine veteran, has fond memories of spending special days with his mom’s co-workers. “Growing up, I looked forward to Thanksgiving or Christmas at the firehouse,” he said. “It’s just one big family.” Joe, a 39-year CFD veteran and the only remaining firefighter to have worked for all of the department’s chiefs, said it’s nice having so many immediate family members who understand the challenges of the job. “When you’re up four times after midnight on runs and you come home and it’s like, ‘I’m dragging,’ they all get it, because they’ve been there,” he said. The Butts family is close-knit outside of the firehouse as well. Renee and Joe live just down the street from Drew and his family in Sheridan, and they operate a landscaping business when they’re not on duty. Because of their different schedules, they make it a priority to be together when they can. “We understand time is limited and we do miss things, but the time we have together, we don’t take for granted,” Renee said. “It is special.”

Compiled by Shelly Gattlieb Besides her job at the Carmel Fire Dept., Renee Butts is president of the CFD Auxiliary, a member of the pension board and a board member for the Chief Swails Education Fund. She also volunteers with the Community Assistance Program and fundraises for the Hoosier Burn Camp. • Inspiration: Renee’s father, a volunteer fireman • Best experience ever: Being a grandparent • Favorite ice cream: Mint chocolate chip • Must always: Pre-wash the dishes • Favorite food: Spaghetti-O’s • Hobby: Traveling • Bucket list destinations: Machu Picchu and Africa • Goal: Run a half-marathon in every state • Award: 2001 softball gold medal from World Police and Fire Games • Fun fact: Learned how to ride a motorcycle at age 6 ON THE COVER: CFD Public Education Officer Renee Butts, center, enjoys working at the same department as her son, Drew Butts, left, and husband, Joe Butts. ESSAY

HUMOR

Old-school vacations

Skipping school

Commentary by Terry Anker

Commentary by Danielle Wilson

It is time to get away from it all. The specter of COVID-19 is waning, and the echo of a very tough year is beginning, for many at least, to fade off into the canyon of history. The sun is shining, and the trees again showcase their foliage. Still, the nagging challenges of our daily ritual cast a shadow over us. We need a vacation. Where will we go? For many of those among us, no kids mean footloose choices. For others, we pack the little ones into the truckster and head to all points of the compass. For those whose nest has emptied, perhaps this is the year for the dream trip — long awaited and much imagined. Or maybe, our plans will take us to visit friends and family, always missed but especially longed for during the lockdowns and travel restrictions. Could we go to the lake again, or is it the summer to visit our college roommate who long ago repaired to some small town out west to pursue her fortune? Whatever the destination, we pack up, pull out and decamp. With each mile, our recollection of the domestic stresses of difficult customers and the slowly leaking toilet in the guest bath blur into the distance. We set out for new territory, with new faces and a new attitude. The rules of ordinary life seem more relaxed at some distance from home. Alas, the phone rings, email dings, and text brings us right back to the office. While we are blessed to enjoy the long tether of the modern age, it is just that, a tether, giving us a prolonged leash but never fully setting us free. And we like it, mostly. In a world where we can increasingly be anywhere at any time, will there be need for an oldschool vacation?

That second COVID-19 vaccine is no joke! I recently received mine, and despite my “I’ll be fine” and “Everyone else is weak” proclamations, it was never a real contest. Moderna 1, me 0. I felt so terrible I actually took a sick day! I know! For you non-educators out there, this is tantamount to publicly admitting defeat to your worst enemy in your underwear. You just don’t do it, ever. It’s too much work preparing for a substitute who probably won’t be able to carry out your instructions, anyway, assuming you’re even feeling well enough to pull those worthless plans together. To give you some perspective, I haven’t called in sick in probably seven years, though I’ve certainly been ill enough to warrant it. It’s simply easier to push through. But I knew about 12 hours after “the shot” that my near-perfect attendance was about to be flushed down the toilet. First, the intense chills and body aches hit, followed by a decent fever and a general sense of awfulness. For a brief moment, I thought maybe I could Zoom from home, but then quickly conceded defeat. If I couldn’t summon the strength to watch Netflix or whisper a thank-you to my husband when he thoughtfully brought me ginger ale, how was I supposed to explain the complexities of Reaganomics? No, I would not be doing any form of teaching in my condition. So, I informed the pedagogical powers-that-be, curled up on the couch, and … endured, reminding my pitiful self that this flu-like misery was still far better than contracting COVID-19. Get vaccinated, friends. Even if that second body blow necessitates a sick day. Peace out.

Background checks are nothing more than a false sense of security Editor, In response to (the April 27 letter to the editor by) Mr. Weingarten of Fishers: Background checks for firearms are not what you think. Background checks consist of employment, education, criminal, credit, motor vehicle and license records. None of the criteria highlights whether a customer has good or bad intentions when purchasing a firearm. It is a common misconception that a background check is a huge CIA investigation that combs through social media. It does not. This check is usually completed in about 30 seconds. According to the FBI Criminal Justice Division, between 1998 and 2014, more 200 million background checks for gun purchases were processed through the FBI’s background check system. Of these, only 0.6 percent were denied. Background checks do not work and are nothing more than a false sense of security. Danny Niederberger, Carmel

Campbell should walk the talk Editor, I got a kick out of the Tim Campbell cartoon in the April 27 Current in Carmel. He shows the stimulus checks as “pork.” It would be good to see Campbell publicly walk the talk and send his stimulus check back to the U.S. Treasury, set an example. I’m guessing he won’t. Many of us sneer at the stimulus, but still pocket the checks; deride “socialized” medicine, but still take Medicare. It’s “government overreach,” but we take our safe water for granted. In the 19th century, the great American writer Ralph Waldo Emerson reminded us about hypocrisy: “What you do speaks so loud I cannot hear what you say.” Beverly Thornburg, Carmel

For four friends spread across central Indiana, it was the perfect reason to take a day off work and spend RESTAURANT most of it waiting together on concrete. The women arrived at Wahlburgers in Carmel around 9 a.m. April 26, approximately seven hours before it would open its doors for the first time. Clad in matching, custom-made “New Burger on the Block” T-shirts, they soaked in the beautiful spring weather as they waited — second in line — for dinner time. “We would’ve been here rain or shine,” said Alison Isenhour, a Brownsburg resident. The friends, who have attended New Kids on the Block concerts together, said it made sense to turn the opening of the first Wahlburgers in Indiana into a girls day out. “You bond over this stuff over the years, and when you have a connection like we’ve had all these years to the band (New Kids on the Block), and they have an endeavor like a restaurant and it’s a really good, fun environment and a new thing coming to

the city, we wanted to be a part of it,” said Sable Stewart, an Indianapolis resident and only one among the friends to have tried Wahlburgers previously. The 4,000-square-foot restaurant at 1200 S. Range Line Rd. in The Proscenium mixeduse development was founded by chef Paul Whalberg, who co-owns the chain with two of his eight siblings: actors and musicians Mark Wahlberg and Donnie Wahlberg, who was also a founding member of New Kids on

the Block. The restaurant and family were featured in the reality-TV show, “Wahlburgers,” which aired on A&E from 2014 to 2019. The Wahlberg family wasn’t present on opening day in Carmel, but Paul Whalberg said he plans to visit the restaurant soon. The Carmel Wahlburgers, which is franchised, is the company’s first in Indiana and the 50th in the nation. It also has restaurants in Canada and Germany. Paul Wahlberg said much of the menu was inspired by recipes he and his siblings enjoyed growing up in Boston, Mass. “Getting that time to be together was huge for us. That’s the best part of our time now is when we have an opportunity for everybody to get together,” he said. “So having families be able to come in and share that experience together and find something they like and something they want to come back for, that’s our goal.” The menu features a variety of burgers, appetizers, salads, crispy onion rings and a full-service bar. Wahlburgers is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Learn more at Wahlburgers.com.

Terry Lee Cares Program awards $500 monthly to nonprofits By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Terry Lee Hyundai and Genesis is approached by a lot of sports teams and organizations with GIVING BACK requests for donations, and Internet Marketing Manager Julie Janssen said it’s difficult for a single-point dealership to award multiple sponsorships. “(We don’t have multiple locations), so it’s really hard and you really want to give in your community as much as you can,” Janssen said. “We brainstormed, ‘What can we do to try to bring awareness to different not-for-profits? Unfortunately, we can’t give to all of them.’” The brainstorming led to the establishment of the Terry Lee Cares Program in January 2020. “We decided we would set up a program where at the beginning of the month, you can nominate a nonprofit. We post the

winner on our Facebook, tell about the nonprofit, what it does, where it’s located, who it benefits, and the winner receives $500,” Janssen said. Last month’s winner was Janus Developmental Services in Noblesville. Janssen said there’s no requirement on where the nonprofit must be located to win, but many are in Hamilton County. Typically, there are six to eight nominations a month. “We’ve been really excited about the awareness it’s brought,” Janssen said. “We have people who say, ‘We didn’t even know that organization existed.’ That’s gotten to be the exciting part to us. Even if we can’t give everybody money every month, we are still bringing a lot of awareness to each of the charities every month.” If an organization doesn’t win when it is nominated, it can reapply. Each organization can win once a year. For more, visit terryleehyundai.com/ terry-lee-cares-program/.

DISPATCHES Vaccine cancellation hotline — The Hamilton County Health Dept. has noticed a sharp increase in the number of people not showing up for their COVID-19 vaccinations. As more clinics open, people are finding ways to get their vaccine sooner. Unfortunately, the only way to cancel an appointment is by calling 2-1-1, which can lead to long wait times. As a result, volunteers for the health department have taken to calling those on the schedule each day to confirm their appointments, but that has proven time consuming. Clients should expect a call from

Carmel actors get another shot at ‘A Few Good Men’ By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com A few hours before opening night of Civic Theatre’s production of “A Few Good Men” on March 13, 2020, DRAMA the curtain dropped on the play because of a shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, more than a year later, the play returns with Carmel resident Matt Kraft in a leading role of Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a Navy lawyer. “A Few Good Men” runs May 7-22 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “I think one of the biggest challenges of this role is just memorizing the sheer amount of dialogue my character has, but that’s the best problem I could ever ask for,” said Kraft, a 2009 Carmel High School graduate. “(Playwright) Aaron Sorkin writes incredibly sharp dialogue, so it’s a ton of fun to get to use it in this play. I started going over the script and the lines again about three weeks before rehearsal. It’s actually cool coming back to this story a year later because I see pieces now that I missed the first time.” The play is about the trial of two Marines charged with complicity in the death of a fellow Marine. The play was made into a 1992 movie. “I am so glad to have the chance to finish what we started with this show,” Kraft said. “Everyone at the theater is so fun to hang out with at rehearsal every day, and I can’t wait for audiences to finally see this.” Kraft performed in “Pride and Prejudice” at Civic Theatre in February. Kraft is confident “A Few Good Men” can succeed because of all the challenges involved with juggling that show. “It’s like, ‘Hey, if we can do a Jane Austen adaptation with English accents, masks and basically no live audience, we can definitely do ‘A Few Good Men,’” Kraft said. Jonathan Scoble, a Carmel resident, returns in his role as Lt. Jonathan James Kendrick.

From left, Jonathan Scoble and Matt Kraft perform in “A Few Good Men.” (Submitted photo)

“We were given about a month to rehearse, and with a few new faces in the cast, there was some work to do,” Scoble said. “For me, personally, it took about a week to get my lines back. My character, however, never really went away. He rattled around my subconscious for over a year, hopeful that we would get another chance to perform, and here we are.” Scoble said there are some new considerations as a result of the pandemic. “Mostly in terms of spacing and distancing and such, but we are working through them, almost effortlessly, without diminishing the integrity of the story,” Scoble said. “I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge and commend Civic leadership and our director, John Goodson, for how they’ve handled these circumstances.” Scoble’s character is that of a military tough guy. “On the surface, he seems very one-dimensional,” Scoble said. “To some degree, his tough-guy persona is simply an ex-

tension of his commanding officer, Col. Jessup. I believe there is a bit more to him than just that — a bright, articulate, commanding leader with more than a handful of misappropriated, God-fearing tendencies. I have found him to be a relatively dynamic character to portray.” Scoble performed in the summer of 2020 in a lighthearted Shakespeare abridged show for Indy Bard Fest. “With the cancellation of all indoor events, the concept was to bring theater to the community in outdoor spaces, which at the time was deemed safe,” Scoble said. “We managed to book 15 shows all over the state of Indiana from August to October, and although a bit non-traditional, it was very well received and considered a huge success. We were even able to stream the show live online in October, which was then still a novel concept in the community theater space — a production I won’t soon forget.” For more, visit civictheatre.org.

Starlite Lounge to perform By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The band members of Starlite Lounge have been playing together for more than five years. CONCERT However, the band will have a new sound when it performs at 7:30 p.m. May 6 in the “Live at the Center” series in a free livestream from the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. All four members previously performed under the name of Carmichael, named after band member Eric Carmichael, before officially changing the band’s name in February. “There is already an artist with that name, and Hoagy Carmichael,” said Nick Christie, who plays guitar and sings. “Licensing became kind of a nightmare. We were performing under Carmichael for five years, so it came to a point where we had to rebrand for business material and all new music. So Starlite Lounge, this is all new material. The music is Americana, indie rock that references a lot of the sounds of the ’60s and ’70s.” The band will play all original and all new music.

Starlite Lounge members are, from left, Eric Carmichael (bass/vocals), Nick Christie (guitar/ vocals), Costin Ritter (drums) and Jamie Mahan (keyboards). (Submitted photo)

Carmichael plays bass and is the other vocalist. Costin Ritter plays drums and Jamie Mahan plays keyboards. All four members live in Indianapolis. Carmichael and Christie met when they were students at Marion High School and began playing together. “We’re obviously thrilled at the opportunity to play at the Center. It’s a huge opportunity for us,” Carmichael said. “We’re glad the show is going to be livestreamed for people to view. It’s definitely an opportunity to reach more people that we might not otherwise connect with.” To register for the free livestream, visit thecenterpresents.org.

Don’t forget your shacket Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt It’s that time of year: is it spring yet? Or is it summer? Wait, is it going to get cold again? What? There’s snow in the forecast this week? Maypril GRAMMAR GUY in central Indiana is like a box of chocolates, assuming that box of chocolates was insane and had a personal vendetta against you and your garden. Enter the shacket. While in New England, a shacket is another name for a yellowjacket or hornet, I’m not talking about flying insects with miniature needles on their butts. No, I’m talking about a piece of clothing that is the hybrid of a shirt and a jacket. It’s a shacket. Picture a thick, slightly oversized flannel shirt for which retailers can charge $130 and you’ll get a good idea of what the shacket is. Is it too cold to go out with just your regular shirt on? Grab a shacket. Is it too warm for your hoodie? Shacket time. In case you’re not following the right Instagram influencers, just know that the shacket is blowing up everyone’s feeds, stories and reels these days. Yes, this year

the shacket is just the clothing item that will get you through this tricky time of the season when Mother Nature decides to hit you with a late frost around the time you’re scheduling your Memorial Day plans. What kind of word is “shacket”? If this were the year 2010, we’d call it a “mashup,” but “Glee” is not on the air anymore. First, “shacket” is a neologism, which is a fancy way of saying “a newly coined word.” More specifically, “shacket” is a type of “word blend” or “portmanteau.” Believe it or not, both of these terms mean the same thing. Whether you call them “word blends” or “portmanteaus,” this type of word is everywhere. From “jorts” (jeans + shorts) to “turducken” (turkey + duck + chicken) the novelty of newly coined word blends — especially in the case of the shacket — makes for a great hashtag.

Winding scenic road leads to fascinating little Story Commentary by Don Knebel Many Hoosiers know about the charm of Nashville, Ind. Fewer know about Story, a unique town 13 miles away. TRAVEL In 1851, President Millard Fillmore granted a 173-acre tract of land in southern Brown County to George Story, an Ohio physician attracted to the area by its timber. Dr. Story and his family erected buildings on a cleared site, which became known first as “Storyville,” and then simply as “Story.” Within a few years, the unincorporated village was the largest in the area, including homes, a doctor’s office, a general store, a church, a school, a sawmill, a grist mill, a slaughterhouse and a post office. When the general store, which supplied huckster wagons servicing nearby farms, burned in 1915, the owner replaced it with a larger two-story structure. A second general store was added in the 1920s, the

using the slogan “One inconvenient location since 1851.” The restaurant in the original general store still has Standard Oil crown pumps near the entrance and features stained glass windows, creaky floors, a potbelly stove, rusty farm antiques and the presidential land grant. It is famous for Indiana-inspired gourmet meals. When I ate there last month, the food and service were superb. The five course, prix fixe meal included an egg arpege amuse, featuring poached yolk, trout roe, pickled fennel and matsutake sabayon, and a magnificent caramelized onion soup. For purposes of this Notice of Intent to Sell Bonds, (a) the term “Public” shall mean any person (including an individual, trust, estate, partnership, association, company, or corporation) other than an Underwriter or a related party to an Underwriter, (b) the term “related party” means any two or more persons who have greater than 50 percent common ownership, directly or indirectly, (c) the term “Underwriter” means (i) any person that agrees pursuant to a written contract with the Corporation Legal Notice Carmel Clay Schools is submitting a Notice of Intent to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to comply with the requirements of 327 IAC 15-5 (Rule 5) to discharge storm water from construction activities associated with the Carmel Hartman Field Improvements project located at 5201 East Main Street, Carmel, Indiana. Any underwriter executing and delivering an Official Bid Form with respect to the 2021 Bonds agrees thereby that if its bid is accepted by the Corporation (i) it shall accept such designation and (ii) it shall enter into a contractual relationship with all participating underwriters of the 2021 Bonds for purposes of assuring the receipt of each such participating underwriter of the Official Statement. The Purchaser shall be responsible for providing (i) in writing the initial reoffering prices and other terms, if any, to the Municipal Advisor as and at the time requested and (ii) a certification verifying information as to the bona fide initial offering prices of the 2021 Bonds to the Public and sales of the 2021 Bonds appropriate for determination of the issue price of, and the yield on, the 2021 Bonds under Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, as and at the time requested by the Corporation’s bond counsel. The Deposit will be applied to the purchase price of the 2021 Bonds awarded to the Purchaser. In the event the Purchaser shall fail or refuse to comply with the provisions of the bid and this notice, such Deposit shall become the property of the Corporation and the School Corporation and shall be taken and considered as liquidated damages of the Corporation and the School Corporation on account of such failure or refusal. The Purchaser will be required to make payment for the 2021 Bonds in Federal Reserve or other immediately available funds and accept delivery of the 2021 Bonds within five (5) days after being notified that the 2021 Bonds are ready for delivery, at a bank designated by the Corporation. Any premium bid must be paid in cash at the time of delivery as a part of the purchase price of the 2021 Bonds. The 2021 Bonds will be ready for delivery within sixty (60) days after the date on which the award is made, if not deliverable within that period, the Purchaser will

be entitled to rescind the sale and the Deposit will be returned. Any notice of rescission must be in writing. It is anticipated that CUSIP identification numbers will be printed on the 2021 Bonds, but neither the failure to print such numbers on any of the 2021 Bonds nor any error with respect thereto shall constitute cause for a failure or refusal by the Purchaser to accept delivery of and pay for the 2021 Bonds in accordance with the terms of its bid. No CUSIP identification number shall be deemed to be a part of any 2021 Bond or the contract evidenced thereby and no liability shall hereafter attach to the Corporation or any of its officers or agents because of or on account of such numbers. All expenses in relation to the printing or typing of CUSIP numbers on the 2021 Bonds shall be paid by the Corporation; provided, however, it shall be responsibility of the Purchaser to timely obtain the numbers and to pay the CUSIP Service Bureau charge for the assignment of the numbers. The Purchaser will also be responsible for any other fees or expenses it incurs in connection with the resale of the 2021 Bonds. AUTHORITY AND PURPOSE. The 2021 Bonds are being issued under the provisions of the Indiana Code to provide the Corporation with funds sufficient to pay the School Corporation for the Mortgaged Property (as defined in the Indenture). The School Corporation will use the money it receives from the Corporation to pay all or a portion of the costs of the Project as defined and described in the Indenture, as more fully described in the Preliminary Official Statement, together with the expenses necessarily incurred in connection therewith, including the expenses incurred in connection with the issuance of the 2021 Bonds. The principal of and interest on the 2021 Bonds are payable solely from the mortgaged property described under the Indenture and as described in more detail in the Preliminary Official Statement. The 2021 Bonds are not an obligation or indebtedness of the School Corporation. BOND DELIVERY. At the time of delivery of the 2021 Bonds, the approving opinion of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, Indianapolis, Indiana, Bond Counsel, as to the validity of the 2021 Bonds, together with a transcript of the proceedings for the 2021 Bonds, the printed 2021 Bonds and closing certificates in the customary form showing no litigation, will be furnished to the Purchaser for the 2021 Bonds at the expense of the Corporation. In addition, unless bond counsel is able, on the date of delivery, to render an opinion to the effect that (1) under existing laws, regulations, judicial decisions and rulings, interest on the 2021 Bonds is excludable from gross income under Section 103 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, for federal income tax purposes, and (2) the interest on the particular series of 2021 Bonds is exempt from income taxation in the state of Indiana for all purposes except the state financial institutions tax, the Purchaser for the 2021 Bonds shall have the right to rescind the sale, and in such event the good faith deposit will be returned. PRELIMINARY OFFICIAL STATEMENT. A copy of the Preliminary Official Statement prepared at the direction of the Corporation in connection with the 2021 Bonds (the “Preliminary Official Statement”) may be obtained from www.newissuehome.i-deal.com or

in limited quantities prior to submission of a bid by request from the Municipal Advisor at the address set forth above. The Preliminary Official Statement will be in a form deemed final by the Corporation, pursuant to Rule 15c2-12 of the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “Rule”), subject to completion as permitted by the Rule. The Preliminary Official Statement when further supplemented by an addendum or addenda specifying the interest rates of the 2021 Bonds, and any other information referred to in paragraph (b)(1) of the Rule, shall constitute a “Final Official Statement” of the Corporation with respect to the 2021 Bonds, as that term is defined in the Rule. By awarding the 2021 Bonds to the Purchaser that is acting as an underwriter with respect to the 2021 Bonds, the Corporation agrees that, no more than seven (7) business days after the date of such award, it shall provide to such underwriter, if it is the sole Purchaser, or the senior managing underwriter of the syndicate to which the 2021 Bonds are awarded up to ten (10) copies of the Official Statement at the Corporation’s expense, any additional copies to be at the expense of the underwriter or the underwriting syndicate. The Corporation designates the senior managing underwriter of the syndicate to which the 2021 Bonds are awarded as its agent for purposes of distributing copies of the Final Official Statement to each participating underwriter. Any underwriter executing and delivering an Official Bid Form with respect to the 2021 Bonds agrees thereby that if its bid is accepted by the Corporation (i) it shall accept such designation and (ii) it shall enter into a contractual relationship with all participating underwriters of the 2021 Bonds for purposes of assuring the receipt of each such participating underwriter of the Final Official Statement. In order to assist bidders in complying with paragraph (b)(5) of the Rule, the School Corporation will undertake, pursuant to the Continuing Disclosure Contract which shall be delivered to the Purchaser of the 2021 Bonds at the closing on the 2021 Bonds, to provide annual reports, certain financial information, and notices of certain events as required by Section (b)(5) of the Rule. A description of this undertaking is set forth in the Preliminary Official Statement and will also be set forth in the Final Official Statement. If bids for the 2021 Bonds are submitted by mail, they should be addressed to Corporation in care of the Municipal Advisor at the address listed above. The Corporation reserves the right to reject any and all bids for any reason and for no reason at all and to waive any and all informalities, defects or requirements set forth in this notice or any bid submitted in response to this notice.
