Carmel mayor, most incumbents win primary By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard won the Republican primary May 7 after going through what he called “the nastiest camELECTION paign” season in which he’s ever been involved. Brainard earned 55.8 percent of the vote in defeating Hamilton County Councilor Fred Glynn, the mayor’s closest margin of victory since his first run for office in 1995. In the months leading up to the election, both campaigns accused each other of bribery and Carmel’s clerk-treasurer claimed that Brainard had harassed her. After the results came in, Brainard thanked his campaign team and supporters as they celebrated the victory at Donatello’s Italian Restaurant on Main Street. “This is a group effort, and we all worked really hard, so thank you,” he said to the crowd. “This means that we can continue to grow the city the way that most people in the city want to see it grow.” He also said he plans to “listen very carefully” to Carmel residents who didn’t vote for him. “There are people who are afraid and scared and concerned about the direction of this city, so we need to all work hard and listen to them to try to answer their questions and make them feel comfortable about where we’re headed in this city,” Brainard said. After learning the results, Glynn thanked his family for supporting him through the journey of a campaign that he said focused on integrity, hard work and a shared vision for the future of Carmel. “I hope that Mayor Jim Brainard will listen to the countless voices that supported my message of fiscal responsibility, bringing our debt under control and considering limiting the number of terms for the office of mayor,” Glynn said. “I will continue to serve Hamilton County as a county councilman, and I will continue to hold this administration accountable as a proud citizen of Carmel.” In other municipal races, every candidate endorsed by Brainard won re-election except Ron Carter, an at-large city councilor who first took office in 1996, the same year as Brainard. In the at-large city council race, political newcomer Tim Hannon — who was not endorsed by Brainard — joined city council incumbents Kevin “Woody” Rider and Jeff Worrell in earning three available seats. Hannon said he thought he had a “good shot” at winning. “We’re just going to take today and be very thankful for all of our supporters and volun-

teers,” he said. “It was very much a grassroots campaign.” Adam Aasen defeated Dave Hommel to win the Southeast District seat, a spot currently held by Worrell. Incumbent Tony Green defeated Matt Milam in the Southwest District, which included votes from Home Place residents for the first time since being annexed by Carmel. Incumbent Bruce Kimball defeated Chauncey Bogan to retain his seat in the Cen-

tral District, and Incumbent City Court Judge Brian Poindexter defeated Angela Swenson. Voter turnout in Carmel was 21.1 percent, with 15,451 of 73,106 registered voters casting ballots. Five of the city council races have Democratic opposition in November’s general election, although the Hamilton County Democratic Party has until June 30 to appoint candidates in uncontested races.

Eight developers submitted plans for the northeast corner of Range Line Road and Main Street. Learn more about each proposal at youarecurrent.com/?p=177833. (Submitted photos)

Plans proposed for Lot One By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com At least eight developers are vying to be selected to transform a historic corner in the heart of REDEVELOPMENT the Arts & Design District. The Carmel Redevelopment Commission received eight responses to its request for proposals for 1.7 acres on the northeast corner of Main Street and Range Line Road. Each proposal includes a public/private parking garage, 37,000 to 110,000 square feet of office or retail space and multifamily dwellings. The new development also will include space for PNC Bank, which is currently on the land and plans to maintain a presence during construction. PNC sold 1.2 acres of the site to the CRC for $2.5 million in December 2018 after Carmel filed a condemnation lawsuit to use eminent domain to acquire the property in August 2018. The city withdrew the lawsuit after the CRC and PNC reached a deal. CRC Director Henry Mestetsky said the number of proposals was higher than the city typically receives for similar projects.

“The large number of responses with office and condo components for this prominent corner is a testament to the vibrancy of the Arts & Design District and the market’s desire to continue investing in Carmel’s downtown generally,” he said. CRC staff, commissioners and other professionals will review the proposals before selecting a developer to move forward with the project. A preliminary recommendation is expected by June 1 with a final recommendation expected to follow at a CRC meeting. Construction is expected to start in 2020. Previous soil testing in the area showed traces of ground contamination, possibly caused by a former dry cleaning business and gas station on the site. The developer will be responsible for remediation during construction of the underground parking garage. The site is called Lot One because a portion of it included the first lots incorporated in the town of Bethlehem in 1837. Bethlehem changed its name to Carmel in 1874. Feedback on the proposals may be directed to Mestetsky at hmestetsky@carmel. in.gov or through a message sent to the Around Carmel Facebook page.

Holocaust survivor shares story at ceremony By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Before making public speaking engagements, Esther Davidson claims she can’t eat or sleep. REMEMBRANCE “I’m a basket case,” Davidson said. And as many times as she tells her story of surviving the Holocaust, it just gets harder for the Geist resident. “It’s like opening a wound and pouring salt on it each time I tell it,” Davidson said. Davidson, however, knows it was important to tell her story again May 3 at the City of Carmel’s Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts. “I lived in Europe when the Nazis tried to kill all Jewish people as well as others they found unworthy,” Davidson said. Davidson was born in February 1941 in Poland. The Nazis invaded Poland in September 1939. “In 1933, there were approximately 3 million Jews in Poland,” Davidson said. “Today, there are less than 5,000.” Davidson showed a picture of her mother and 10 brothers and sisters. “Several of her brothers and sisters

were married and had children when the war started. My mother was the only one who survived,” Davidson said. “My mother changed her name to Nellie to sound less Jewish, wore a cross and passed for Christian during the war.” After Davidson was born, her mother protected her by giving her to an older Christian woman named Reba, who claimed her as a grandchild. “I wore a crucifix and I went to church with Reba every Sunday,” Davidson said. “She gave me to Reba so if she was caught,

I might remain safe. Understand that Reba was taking her life in her hands when she took me in. The Nazis didn’t treat people that helped Jews any better than they treated the Jews themselves.” Davidson’s father was one of seven children. Some were married with children. Her father, his brother and one cousin were the only survivors on his side. “My father survived by hiding in the forest and living the best he could off the land,” Davidson said. “He told me one day he had to steal food and clothes when he was hiding. Other than that it’s not a period of time he discussed.” Her parents came to get Davidson, then 4 years old, following the war. She was crying and didn’t want to go because they were strangers. Davidson and her parents ended up in a Displaced Persons Camp in Germany. Davidson’s daughter, Carmel resident Sharie Fields, described her mother as a model of “open-mindedness, selflessness, bravery, stoicism and humility.” Fields’ daughter, Naomi Fields, a Clay Middle School seventh-grader, said it will one day be her responsibility to share her grandmother’s story.

The Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation will present Kristy Woodson Harvey at 2:30 p.m. May 19 as part of LIBRARY its visiting author series. The award-winning author will discuss her latest book, “The Southern Side of Paradise.” “I think our audience will love her,” said Liz Hamilton, CCPL foundation director. “She is excellent at character development and draws you in immediately. You can’t wait to find out what’s going to happen in these people’s lives. She has a knack for being able to do that.” The book is the third in Harvey’s Peachtree Bluff series and focuses on a long-kept family secret. She has previously authored “Slightly South of Simple” and “The Secret to Southern Charm.” Her books, although part of a series, also are considered stand-alone reads. “If you haven’t read her first two books in the series, you won’t be lost,” Hamilton said. “We will have all three at the library for sale during the event, though.” Harvey blogs with her mother, Beth Woodson, on their blog “Design Chic,” de-

Wrestlers from New Zealand visit Carmel

11

CBD SOURCED WISELY™

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel High School sophomore wrestler Jake Shafer saw the cultural exchange with New Zealand from both EXCHANGE ends. In the summer of 2018, Shafer was one of several Carmel USA Wrestling Club wrestlers who visited New Zealand as part of an Indiana State Wrestling Association contingent. Then, Shafer and his family played host to four wrestlers out of a group of 10 wrestlers and two coaches who visited Carmel from April 15 to 23. The Shafer family played host to two girls and two boys. “When we first arrived after the long plane trip last summer, they greeted us with their haka, which is their traditional dance,” Shafer said. “We had to sing a song back to show trust. When they came here, they also did the haka at the wrestling tournament.” Shafer said he observed that people from New Zealand have a more laid-back attitude. “They see the people in America more focused on jobs and a little more angry,” Shafer said. The New Zealand wrestlers competed in

an open wrestling tournament at Southport High School. All 10 New Zealand wrestlers, six males and four females, and two coaches joined nine Carmel wrestlers and coaches in attending the April 21 Indiana Pacers’ playoff game against Boston. The New Zealand contingent also visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “When the kids get to interact together, those things are pretty special,” CHS coach

Ed Pendoski said. “The coaches took a picture of me putting peanut butter on a banana every morning. It was the most unusual thing. They would take pictures of fire hydrants because they never see them (in New Zealand).” Pendoski said he has built relationships around the world through the cultural exchanges. “Wrestling is what binds us together,” he said.

DI team heading to globals By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com A group of second-, third- and fourthgrade students from elementary schools in Carmel and Noblesville ACHIEVEMENT will participate in the Destination Imagination Global Finals May 22 to 25 in Kansas City, Mo. DI is a nonprofit that promotes hands-on learning through challenges that test kids’ creativity, problem-solving and project-management skills. The DI Tectives formed in September 2018. Members are Asia Wofford, Julia Herstein, Prudence Peng, Irina Balaban, Sofia Balaban, Liza Folkin and Raya Stennis. In February and March, the team participated in the Destination Imagination regional and state tournaments in the Scientific: Medical Mystery Challenge. “They had to choose a disease to research,” said Tatyana Komarova, Liza Folkin’s mother. “Then they had to come up with a script where they explained the disease and explained a cure or how to deal with it. It has to be very scientific, so they chose polio.” During the competition, each team is given an instant challenge with a problem to solve. In four to six minutes, the team must come up with a solution and present it to the judges. DI Tectives won first place in the challenge.

“As a younger team, we didn’t expect that. It’s a big deal,” Komarova said. The group was formed by the International Talent Academy, a liberal arts school for young children. “I thought that this is one of the most important programs for kids,” said Komarova, who also is the founder of International Talent Academy. “It teaches kids many different skills, including serious research evaluation of what you’re reading.” International Talent Academy will play host to a summer camp called Creative Tech for students ages 9 to 15 who are interested in learning more about DI and STEAM programs. Creekside students win contest By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The grand-prize and second-place winners of the Sertoma National Heritage Essay Award had quite a bit SERTOMA CLUB in common. Grace Barnes and Beatriz Lacerda are Creekside Middle School sixth-graders and had the same teacher in different classes at the Carmel school. And then there is this: “Me and Bea are best friends,” Barnes said. Barnes was named the grand-prize winner by Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple and Lacerda placed second for their essays on what “freedom means to me.” “The three most important privileges that help me appreciate my freedom are my education, my security, and my freedom of expression,” Barnes wrote. Nineteen schools with 84 classrooms submitted essays to the contest. The three top places and honorable mention winner read their essays May 1 at the Knights of Columbus in Indianapolis. “I was very shocked. I did not expect to win,” Barnes said. Barnes and Lacerda were taught in different classes by language arts teacher Amy

Stuck. “I feel like a proud mom, forget teacher,” Stuck said. Lacerda’s essay touched on the many freedoms Americans have that her parents didn’t have in Brazil. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was a year old. “We cherished the safety, security and dependability,” Lacerda read from her essay. “We still cherish them just like when we were newcomers. Freedom means being yourself without fear.” Claire Wilmore, a Carmel resident who attends The Orchard School, earned honorable mention.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 22ND 11:30AM - 1PM EMBASSY SUITES

With 10 years of CarmelFest experience, Bec Hunter is taking on a new role as the 2019 parade director in addition to her position as CarmelFest meCARMELFEST dia/PR director. Hunter previously served as parade co-director with Barbara Ellis, who stepped down after the 2018 event. Hunter leads a parade committee of more than 15 members. “We are a team,” she said. “Team together, everyone achieves more. That’s kind of how I work.” CarmelFest is the city’s July 4 festival, complete with entertainment, food, games, rides, a parade and a fireworks display. Hunter initially joined CarmelFest as a participant with a parade float entry that recognized Vietnam War veterans. Since 2007, when Hunter joined the festival’s organizing committee, the float has grown from 10 members in uniform to 250 to 300 veterans leading the float. “That’s why we have the grand finale for

(For) a lot of them, that’s something they never got when they came home.” Professionally, Hunter has worked in radio, television, advertising and public relations. After she met her husband, Hunter transitioned to real estate. She now works for RE/MAX Legends as a Realtor and media/PR director. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. July 4. It is led by the Carmel High School Marching Greyhounds.

Evolve Youth Esports helps kids from Carmel, beyond chase dreams By Chris Bavender news@currentincarmel.com Twelve-year-old Dawson Newman already has a career goal in mind: To become a pro gamer. COVER STORY “I have played video games with my dad since I was really little,” the sixth-grader said. “I started getting into gaming more seriously when I was 8 and saved my money to buy a PlayStation 3.” Although making a career of playing video games might have seemed farfetched not so long ago, thanks to Carmel-based Evolve Youth Esports, Dawson’s dream could become reality. Evolve is the brainchild of Scott Wise, who founded Scotty’s Brewhouse. “After I sold Scotty’s (in 2016) and was figuring out what I wanted to be when I ‘grew up’ and was turning Wise 45, I noticed my kids were always playing Fortnite,” Wise said. “And, like any parent coming from the generation of ‘get outside and play,’ I just wanted them to get out of their room. But, the more I watched, I saw them communicating with all their buddies on the team, and that is where it started.” Wise partnered with Player One Esports and opened Evolve at 13644 N. Meridian St. in Carmel in January. It offers esports leagues for boys and girls ages 9 to 14 of any skill level. The eight-week season has weekly practices at the Player One arena, games on Saturdays and a season championship. Players like Dawson even have the potential to make a career out of gaming. Dawson’s mom, Tracy, saw an ad for Evolve on Facebook. Knowing gaming is her son’s passion, she made the commitment to make the two-hour drive from their southern Indiana home in New Washington

to Carmel. “As a parent, you want to find every opportunity you can to support your child’s goals,” she said. “We get some crazy looks when we tell people what we are driving two hours to do. We traveled just as far for baseball. Why not do it for esports? He has goals to be a pro gamer. We feel Evolve is helping him grow and giving him more opportunities to learn about the world of gaming firsthand.” Evolve also gives Dawson, who is homeschooled, the chance to meet new people, including those in the gaming industry. “Evolve allows the kids to play together in person and work together as a team,” Tracy said. “They have wonderful coaches there to help them when they have questions about the game that maybe mom and dad can’t answer.” Evolve could also help Dawson land a college scholarship.

“As of today, over 125 colleges are offering scholarships for esports, and it’s continuing to grow,” Wise said. “Today’s video games are not yesterday’s Atari. And you don’t have to be a gamer. You could work for a gaming company or create songs for games. I feel there are so many opportunities wrapped around this.” The first season at Evolve drew around 125 youth who concentrated only on Fortnite. The Dawsons aren’t the only family from outside the Carmel area traveling to Evolve, as two families drove from Greenwood twice a week, two other families came from Louisville and one family traveled from Chicago. “And that was without marketing and it told me we need to grow this thing and see it go across the country,” Wise said. “I was a kid who was small and meek, and so because of that, I could try to play sports but was not strong enough or quick enough.

But now, esports leagues are opening the door for kids like me who got picked last in the playground kickball game, so maybe that kid is the best Fortnite player and now they are playing a video game with the captain of the football team.” Season 2 is expected to draw approximately 200 players who will play not only Fortnite but also NBA2K and Super Smash Brothers. Evolve also is planning a fiveweek summer mini season starting June 17 that includes a $2,000 prize tournament. “We are extending practice times to two hours during this mini season to give parents the opportunity to fill their kids’ schedule during the summer months,” Wise said. “We will be offering four games to choose from: Fortnite, Super Smash Bros., Rocket League and FIFA.” Cost for the mini season is $150. ESSAY Unchartered territory

LETTER Carmel should stay conservative

Commentary by Terry Anker

Editor, Regarding the commentary from Shelly Carey in the April 30 edition (of Current in Carmel), we have to be careful what we wish for. Her desire to move from a “red area” to a “purplish color” is fraught with all kinds of danger signals. I might remind her to look at a map of the United States and see what the result of “purplish” or “blue” policies brings: economic stagnation, high levels of crime, crumbling city infrastructure, vacant buildings, stratospheric taxation and endless corruption in government. Don’t believe me? Who runs Baltimore, Los Angeles, Detroit, San Francisco, Buffalo, Gary, East Chicago, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Newark, Camden and New York? They look pretty purple or blue to me, and they are disasters for their citizens. No wonder people are leaving those cities in droves. The problem is that those that flee don’t leave their failed ideas behind. Hence, that process then begins the destruction of their chosen victim city. Case in point: just look at blue state California. There is little hope of recovery for that entire state. Thank you for the input, but no thanks. This is a conservative city and it should stay that way. James J. Smith, Carmel

From 1791 until 1992, the United States Congress officially recognized a handful of organizations to profit from the official imprimatur of our federal authorities as being legitimate and sanctioned. While the central government does not oversee operations directly, the granting of a congressional charter serves to distinguish these few from the other reported 1,500,000 registered nonprofits operating in our nation. The list is populated with allfamiliar names, including the National Park Foundation, Federal Reserve Bank, National Academy of the Sciences, American Red Cross and youth-serving organizations like Girl Scouts, FFA and Boy Scouts. While the designation is considered largely honorific, each remains endorsed by our national legislative body as unique, in the public interest and supporting appropriate and beneficial activities. For many generations, these institutions had withstood the test of time and proven themselves worthy of broad support. But today these organizations are fighting on a new front. Schools and other government units have, in many cases, reduced these to the lowest common denominator. Scouts compete with every other group that demands attention from school children because the administrators fear those imagining grievance will initiate litigation if equal access is withheld. The harm of this misguided egalitarian impulse is born entirely by our children. Some schools have restricted or eliminated access at the precise time when the youngsters need the support. And all at no cost to the taxpayer. Do congressional charters matter? For our kids, they should. Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. Bracing for a home invasion Commentary by Danielle Wilson It’s May, people, and you know what that means. No, not the race. I’m talking about the life-altering phenomenon that occurs when college kids return home. HUMOR My wonderfully quiet house and relatively full fridge are about to take a beating. We’ve actually already had “the talk.” You know, the one that makes parents sound like Old Man Get-Off-My-Lawn Wilson. “So long as you are under my roof … blah, blah, blah.” Curfews, chores, driveway spot — basic family responsibilities and expectations. But even assuming he abides by all of the rules, his mere presence, while enjoyable in small doses, changes the dynamics of our humble abode. For starters, our younger three kids have adapted to his absence and delight in not having an A-type firstborn steamroll over their ideas and opinions. There is one less sibling in competition for our affection, and

one less human hogging precious bathroom time. One less of everything, really, and when that loud-talking, personal spacechallenged, bratty older brother gets back, one less quickly becomes one more. Particularly in the “One More Mouth to Feed” category. While hitting Meijer in anticipation of the ensuing food shortage, I saw several other moms filling carts with Pop Tarts, Cheeze-Its and various other “luxury goods” that our coeds cannot afford. It’s like a plague of locusts has arrived for the summer and no kitchen is safe from its destructive gastronomical path. How will we survive this temporary home invasion? I’m not sure. And it’s only May. Stupid May. Peace out.

A tall tale Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I went to my doctor after an episode of lightheadedness. During an MRI, I had a flashback to high school trigoHUMOR nometry class where I also stared at a blank ceiling, listening to strange, indecipherable sounds. At the hospital they give you a buzzer to press if the experience becomes unbearable, a courtesy never extended by my freshman math teacher. After they examined my brain scan, a nurse called to report they didn’t find anything. Obviously, this was good news, but did the test results have to be phrased quite that way? On my license, my passport and all medical questionnaires, I always listed myself as 5-foot-10 — not as tall as my dad (a strapping 6-footer) but taller than my mom, a petite 5-3. I knew I was 5-9 1/2, but I always rounded it up. I mean, who was I hurting? In the follow-up appointment, the nurse measured my vitals. “Blood pressure 123 over 80, height 5-8, weight 165. Now, please step over here and …” “Whoa! How tall did you say I was?” “That would be 5 feet, 8 inches — in your socks, which adds a little.” “Look, first of all, I’m 5-10, maybe 5-9 1/2, and second, these are nylon dress socks, and very thin.” “Whatever you say, Mr. Wolfsie. Please grab one of the blue robes off that hook on the door ... if you can reach it.” When I got home, I asked my wife how tall she thought I was. “Well, I’m 5-7, so I’d say you are 5-8. And you’re still as adorable as can be.” “But when we got married, I told you I was 5-10. “I figured you rounded it up from 5-7.” That’s the end of the story. No illness, but I’m either a pathological liar (misrepresenting my height for 50 years) and need some psychological counseling — or I am (and this is tough to admit) shrinking. I haven’t decided which one it is. I guess it’s going to depend on which one is covered by my medical insurance.

Carmel Steak ‘n Shake among several temporarily closed

Carmel Chocolate Café announced By Maria Cook • news@currentincarmel.com Carmel residents with a sweet tooth may be pleased to hear that South Bend Chocolate Company, COMING SOON a candy store with its most famous location on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, is coming to the Carmel Arts & Design District. The new store will be at 43 West Main St., formerly the home of Carmel Tattoo and a convenience store. Founded in South Bend by company President Mark Tarner, the South Bend Chocolate Company has grown to 16 locations, including its outlet store, franchise locations and out-of-state shops in Ohio and Michigan. Tarner did not provide a projected opening date for the Carmel store. Tarner said the Carmel store will have the same amenities as the famous downtown Indianapolis shop in a smaller, 1,500-square-foot space. He plans to brand the new location specifically to Carmel. “We found a good location to try to make it work,” Tarner said. “We’re going to try to do it all in Carmel on a smaller scale, so there may be some lines, but you’re going

A Steak ‘n Shake in Carmel is among five in the Indianapolis area to be temporarily closed. RESTAURANT The closures include the Carmel restaurant at 635 E. Carmel Dr. and 4105 E. 96th St. in Indianapolis, which is just across the border from Carmel. Other closures are in Indianapolis at 3810 W. Washington St., 5635 W. 38th St. and 5827 E. 71st St. Steak ‘n Shake Senior Vice President of Marketing Judy Kadylak said the restaurants are expected to be re-opened under new franchise leadership, although she did not know when that might happen. The restaurant chain is struggling to find enough workers, like many others on Carmel Drive and throughout the nation. Kadylak confirmed the labor shortage played a factor in the decision to temporarily close the restaurants. “With many of these closures we were struggling with staffing and felt we were

to get everything — ice cream, beverages, the whole nine yards. We’re going to call it Carmel Chocolate Café. We’re going to have a special drink in Carmel that we don’t make at our other stores.” Tarner added that, in addition to the chocolate counter, the café will serve small plates of food, such as sandwiches, and desserts, like cheesecake. Seating will be available for between 12 to 16 people and will include some outdoor tables. “Largely, we’re going to be a great complement to the area restaurants,” Tarner said. “People can go have a hot chocolate or coffee or grab some cheesecake after they’ve had dinner.”

not delivering a guest experience worthy of the Steak ‘n Shake brand,” Kadylak said. “In those cases, we felt it was better to temporarily close the locations until we are confident that we can re-open under franchise ownership and deliver the best guest experience possible.” In the meantime, the company will install new equipment at the closed locations to enhance the speed of service when they reopen, Kadylak said. Steak ‘n Shake restaurants remain open in Hamilton County in Westfield, Noblesville and Fishers.

Performing arts center announces schedule By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Chances are you are going to find something that appeals to you about the Center for the Performing EVENTS Arts’ 2019-20 season at the Palladium. From Johnny Mathis to Gladys Knight to Steve Martin and Martin Short to Lyle Lovett to the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, the schedule covers many different genres. Great American Songbook Hall of Famer Mathis, known for his songs such as “Chances Are” and “Misty,” will be a romantic treat for fans on Halloween night. He last appeared at the Palladium in June 2013. Martin and Short are a comedy treat early in the season with a Sept. 26 performance. “I was a board member before I became president. I think I can honestly say this is our best season yet,” Center for the Performing Arts CEO/President Jeff McDermott said. “There is as much, if not more, name recognition from (previous seasons). We have some of the wellknown artist as well as vision artists that we brought in. Some of our jazz and classical performers people might not know as well, but I think they are going to be wowed. I’m just excited by the balance of the whole season. “The ones we are really considering the headliners are Steve Martin and Martin Short. It’s the first show after our gala, which really kicks off our season, but obviously there are several that are headline-quality artists.” The Center’s Annual Gala and Songbook Celebration, set for Sept. 21, will feature a performance by 2016 Songbook Hall of Fame inductee Dionne Warwick. Paul Williams and Duke Ellington will be inducted into the Songbook Hall of Fame. McDermott said the Songbook Series is particularly exciting with appearances by Mathis, Rita Moreno and Ben Vereen. Along with acts such as Knight, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Righteous Brothers, the pop/rock series features violinist Damien Escobar Nov. 21.

Johnny Mathis will make a Halloween Night appearance at the Palladium. (Submitted photo)

Two country acts, Lovett and Trish Yearwood, are scheduled so far. McDermott said he expects more. “Country acts tend to announce two or three months before they go on tour, so it’s hard to book a country artist six or eight months out,” McDermott said. “If we get the right country artist, it might be the right fit for our Encore Series.” The Encore Series are acts that will only be sold separately after the performers have been scheduled. “These will probably be artists we can book the second half of the year with great name recognition,” McDermott said. “We know we end each year with a bang.” For instance, Amy Grant and Tony Bennett appeared earlier this month but the concerts were added later. Subscribers to Classical, Songbook, Jazz and Create Your Own Series (four or more) will have first opportunity at purchasing tickets for any concerts listed in the Encore Series. Among the other special events will be “Napoleon Dynamite: A Conversation with Jon Heder & Efren Ramirez” Dec 5. Monty Python’s John Cleese’s appearance Nov. 14 will be another special event, McDermott said. For subscriber and ticket information, visit the thecenterpresents.org.

Prodigy Burger and Bar

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 14490 Clay Terrace Blvd., Carmel What to get: The G.O.A.T Price: $14 Anna’s take: Personally, I think $14 is a bit high for a cheeseburger, but Prodigy Burger and Bar’s burgers are a full halfpound, so I thought I would give The G.O.A.T (greatest of all time) a try. The burger is one of Prodigy’s signature blend patties topped with four slices of

smoked bacon, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and special sauce. It’s all served on a sesame seed bun (which tastes way better than a normal bun, in my opinion) and served with a side of thick-cut fries, which are pretty extraordinary. The G.O.A.T is a good option for someone who’s really hungry and also just wants a traditional burger with some special touches. Suggested pairings: I visited Prodigy for lunch during a work meeting, so no booze. But the bar does have an excellent list of craft beers on tap that would pair well with a burger.

Sam Greene relishes his role as Prince Lemon in Indiana Ballet Conservatory’s upcoming ballet production. BALLET “I like that I can be funny and boss people around that are older than me,” the 12-year-old Greene said. Carmel-based IBC presents “Cipollino: A Fairytale Ballet” at 3 p.m. May 19 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. It is staged by Alyona Yakovleva-Randall and based on choreography by Henrik Mayorov. The story is about fruits and vegetables. Prince Lemon and General Tomato put taxes on water and air for villagers. Carmel resident Ethan Gold is in the title role of Cipollino, who fights the unjust treatment. “He leads the protest against the tax,” Gold said. “They take Cipollino’s father, and Cipollino and Radish try to save him.” Carmel High School freshman Maren Goddard, 15, plays Magnolia, the lead flower. “It’s a challenging ballet because the choreography is so unique,” Goddard said. Amelia Happel, 16, plays Radish.

Amelia Happel will perform as Radish in the IBC production of “Cipollino.” (Provided by Renzulli Photography)

“Radish is a fun role. A lot of the dances are contemporary-based, and we get sad,” Happel said. “But this one is super happy. The choreography is so different. I’m excited to smile, have fun and act on stage.” Ian Anderson-Conlon, 17, in his first year at IBC, performs as General Tomato. “It’s more challenging and it’s a different role than I’ve ever done,” Anderson-Conlon said. “I’m more like a bad person who is under the rule of Prince Lemon. I do what I’m told and watch the villagers. The acting has been more of a challenge than dancing because it’s a different kind of acting.” For more, visit indianaballetconservatory. org.

Lurie features unique exhibit By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com A year ago, Susan Brewer was hired to be a curator at Evan Lurie Gallery in Carmel. “I’m an artist ART and I’ve had work at the gallery since 2013. Evan wanted to bring more local artists in to get that footprint,” Brewer said. “The shows he does on the road are huge productions. His stable of international artists do amazing arts, but this brings a different facet into the business in Carmel. This is my third exhibit and one that pulls in these different artists that are connected through their collaborations as a means of working and I find it a fascinating new direction for the gallery. “Matthew Aaron is locally based and his background professionally is that of a photographer, musician and songwriter. I think there is a natural progression as an artist due to his background that contributes to a rich visual language.” The exhibit featuring Aaron, an Indianapolis visual artist, and Brooklyn-based artists

Jilly Ballistic and Al Diaz, opens with a reception from 5 to 10 p.m. May 16 at the gallery, 30 W. Main St. The exhibit runs through the end of June. Brewer said Aaron was always fascinated by the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and began collaborating with the Brooklyn artists in this exhibit to develop that process. Aaron also has a collective in London he is working with as well. Aaron begins his collaborations with Ballistic by painting the background and then adds her vintage figures, Brewer said. Diaz published a book last year about 40 years of graffiti and street art. The book, “SAMO(c)... Since 1978…,” documents his beginnings as a street artist with teenage friend Basquiat. Basquiat, who collaborated with Andy Warhol, died at age 27 of a heroin overdose. Lurie said he views the exhibit as an important one for Carmel. “It’s reminiscent of the art that Basquiat and Warhol were doing in the ‘80s,” Lurie said.

Kitchen and bathroom remodeling seems to be everywhere as evidenced by the Neighborhood Dumpster STAY HOME, Index, or NDI. Of course, BE MOVED! the NDI is a facetious index, but the volume of dumpsters in driveways is an amusing indicator of the pervasive nature of interior upgrades happening across our neighborhoods. Our observations inform us that about 60 percent of remodels are for homeowners who have settled in for years versus 40 percent for having recently moved. Adam Gibson, a design professional in the Indiana Design Center and Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer we collaborate with, recently attended the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas and shared these inspirations with us: • The predominance of grays and whites is gradually fading, most notably in appliances. • Ovens, exhaust fans and even farmhouse-style sink fronts offered bursts

Remembering Hare Krishna Commentary by Don Knebel Vrindavan, India, said to have been where Krishna, a revered Hindu deity, spent his childhood, contains many temTRAVEL ples in his honor. One temple also remembers a modern spiritual leader who founded a religious movement as well-known in the United States as it is in India. In 1965, 69-year-old Bhaktivedanta Swami, born Abhay Charan De, arrived in New York from India with $7 and a mission — teach people in the West to live in harmony by dedicating themselves to Krishna, who he believed was the highest form of God and the ultimate source of goodness. In 1966, he founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (“ISKCON”) in New York to promote his beliefs, which soon found their way to San Francisco, where they immediately gained a following among members of the city’s counterculture. Travelers soon encountered Krishna devotees in American airports, dressed in saffron robes and chanting “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare, Hare,” which they believed connected them with the divine. The movement gained worldwide attention
