Carmel-based architect Paxton Waters’ reputation as one of the best racetrack designers in the country has caught the attention of filmmakers in Indiana. Movie director and Indiana native Justin Escue said Waters will design and build a full-scale model of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as it was in 1909 through 1911 for Escue’s upcoming movie about the first Indianapolis 500 race. Escue said filmmakers chose Waters to build their set because they were impressed with his extensive resume. “We’re really happy to have him,” Escue said. Waters, who has designed about 14 major racing facilities and has many more on the way, said his experience gives him an advantage in his career field. “I’ve seen a lot, done a lot, and every one of (my projects) is unique,” Waters said. Waters said when he graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1976, he never imagined he would be designing racetracks. He said he started out doing “typical” architecture jobs, such as designing office buildings, until 1994, when Penske Racing owner Roger Penske hired Waters to design the California Speedway. Other racetrack projects, such as the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Pikes Peak International Raceway, followed. “You don’t always decide what you want to do,” he said. “Sometimes you see an opportunity, and you take it.” Planned or not, the self-described “low-key” Waters said he is happy with what he does for a living. “My job is the most fun job I’ve ever heard of,” he said. “A designer is not just making pretty buildings, but solving problems. I just love thinking about all these things at all times.” With each new job, Waters said he has gained more confidence in his abilities and learned to stop secondguessing his instincts so much. “You start doing that, and you’re not creating anything original,” he said. “You’re worrying whether you’re going to be liked or not, and I quit that quite a while ago.” That same can-do attitude has helped Waters get where

Future Projects In addition to the road courses at Prairie Hills Motorsport Club, Paxton Waters is currently designing racing facilities for sites in Aurora, Colo. and Ontario, Canada. In Aurora, Waters is designing an oval racetrack, road courses, hotels and retail buildings. Waters has been working on the project for about two months. The Canadian Motor Speedway, a racetrack Waters is co-designing with racecar driver Jeff Gordon, might be his favorite project. “It’s the perfect site, the perfect location, the perfect client and working with Jeff Gordon is going to be fantastic,” he said. The $150 million facility will include a one-mile speedway, a road course, a go-karting track and approximately 65,000 seats.
he is today, doing something he has never done before: building a movie set. “It’s quite fascinating, making movies is not something I know about,” he said. “I’m starting to learn a lot.” Instead of constructing a replica of the entire Speedway, Waters said he will be building the front straight and turns one and two of the racetrack, as well as all of the original buildings. “In 1911, most of the buildings were in turns one and two,” he said. “Turns three and four were just farmland, so there’s no reason to build that for a movie set.” The set will be built in Newton County, at the future site of Prairie Hills Motorsport Club, a racing facility and country club that Waters said will probably open late 2011. “The goal is to build the set, and then leave it as a permanent tourist attraction so that people will get to see it, (as it was) 100 years ago, forever,” he said. The period-style Speedway set will be incorporated into one of the four road courses Waters is also building at Prairie Hills, along with his co-designer, former racecar driver Derek Daly. Another enterprising Hoosier, Angelo Pizzo, of

“Hoosiers” and “Rudy” fame, will write the script for the movie, tentatively titled “500.” Pizzo, who has been working on the script for about two years, said he considers the film to be the third part of his trilogy of Indiana sports movies. He said 500 will tell the stories of real-life characters Carl Fisher, the visionary responsible for building the Speedway, and Ray Harroun, the driver who won the first Indianapolis 500 race. “I really believe it’s unlike anything else I’ve ever done, and unlike anything that’s been done.” Pizzo said. 500 is scheduled to debut in May 2011, just in time for the Indianapolis 500’s 100th anniversary. Those interested can learn more about the movie and how to get involved at its Web site: thespectaclebegins.com.

Be thorough, don’t be sloppy and don’t make mistakes.
Give people much more than they expect from you, no matter what the task. “I do it every time,” he said. Be honest. “If you’re always honest with people, you can always say what’s on your mind because you can back it up,” he said. “A lot of times, it’s what’s they don’t want to hear, but if you’re honest, they will listen.”

OUR TAKES It is our position that the June 3 return of the Carmel Gazebo Concert Series is a win/win for the city of Carmel and all of us. The series offers numerous benefits to the citizens and businesses of our fair home. Nothing projects the image of a family-friendly hometown quite like a concert in the park. Heralding the return of summer is the timeless tradition of listening to live music under an open sky and sharing a picnic dinner while lying on a blanket with friends, family and neighbors. Folks can enjoy a wide range of music – pop to country, rock to jazz. Happily, taxpayers are not footing the bill on this one, as funding is provided by the non-profit Carmel Fountain Square Committee. Carmel businesses benefit from the influx of people into the City Center area. Visit the city of Carmel Web site (ci.carmel. in.us) for a list of concerts. FROM THE BACKSHOP we’re hastening to tell you about our haste It’s no joke. We were given a tip by a (previously) tremendously reliable source – right on deadline for last week’s edition – about a software firm slated to move into the Indiana Design Center. Right up against press time, we did the wrong thing and didn’t confirm it, and so we only got half the facts correct. When we err, we admit it, and we apologize. Software Engineering Professionals is planning to move its 73-person team to a space in the structure that will be built adjacent to the Regional Performing Arts Center at City Center. Last week, we had the firm ticketed for the Indiana Design Center. Clearly, we were incorrect and, sincerely, we apologize. ••• Bad idea - Congress is considering sending $108 billion in assistance to the International Monetary Fund. Doing so would be a horrible move. We need to get out of the business of providing what amounts to welfare for developing countries. CARMEL GRAD WINS FEINSTEIN COMPETITION By Kim Puckett Current in Carmel
Recent Carmel High School graduate Julia Bonnett sang her way to the top prize of the Great American Songbook High School Competition and Showcase held by the Michael Feinstein Foundation May 31. By winning the BONNETT competition, held at Butler University, Bonnett, 18, earned the opportunity to perform with six-time Grammy nominee Michael Feinstein at Loews Regency in New York City on June 11. She performed “From This Moment On” by Cole Porter and “The Nearness of You” by Hoagy Carmichael and Ned Washington. The contest also fell on the day of her high school graduation. “I just got my diploma and kept on walking straight back to the contest,” Bonnett said. “As Michael (Feinstein) said, ‘It was a very auspicious day.’ Overall, it was one of the best days of my life.” Bonnett, who has been singing since she was in sixth grade, will attend Indiana University in the fall to study business. Although music will not be her major, she said she will continue training with her
vocal coach, Tamara Wagoner. Judges selected Bonnett as one of 10 finalists from a pool of students from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky and Michigan. According to the foundation’s Web site (michaelfeinsteinfoundation.org), its mission is to “preserve and gain appreciation for the great American music, lyrics, culture, history and artists created during the 20th century for present and future generations.” “Many children are never exposed to the wonderful and uniquely American music that constitutes the Great American Songbook,” Feinstein said in a news release. “Through this competition, we are reaching a new generation to teach this music and the American history that inspired and influenced these composers.” The Michael Feinstein Foundation selected the Regional Performing Arts Center in Carmel as its headquarters, which is slated for completion in fall 2010. Mayor Jim Brainard approved the addition of the Feinstein Foundation. “Locating the collections and programs of the Great American Songbook here makes a profound and lasting contribution to the cultural resources already located in Indianapolis, helping to attract new tourist and visitor dollars to the region,” Brainard said in a news release.

When it comes to technology, children are on the leading edge. And now a Carmel-based company is helping thousands of preschoolers across the country with everything from how to use a mouse to explaining parts of the keyboard. “We want them to have a better understanding and respect for technology and computers and learn it as a tool; not just a way to play games,” said Julie Standish. Standish and her husband are franchisers for the company, CompuChild, which has 64 franchise territories in 28 different states. “We were looking for a business that we thought we could put our mark on and put improvements in place, as well as be strong in the industry,” Standish said. “We know technology is not going away, and we will adapt as it changes.” Standish, a former commercial realtor, is a firm believer that technology education needs to start at a young age. “I was at a conference last year talking with people hiring kids right out of college, and they said the people they were hiring didn’t know technology as they had expected they would,” she said. “They know how to text and download music,
but when you put work in front of them, they don’t know how to use a spreadsheet.” CompuChild is normally used as an enrichment program in daycares and preschools. Recently, the company partnered with Kidzui, which offers a free web browser for kids. “It’s designed for kids from 3 to 12 and it creates a fun, safe, engaging on line experience,” she said. “So even kids that can’t read yet can still maneuver around on their site because of the interface they have. And it’s all approved by parents and educators so we know it’s appropriate material for kids.” For more information, log on to www. compuchild.com.

We have been trying to dehumanize the world market. We organize our businesses to use Bob fewer people – and Montgomery more technology. We are increasing the house of technology. We are producing more people. We need more people to think. We need people to create a better world – for people; not for machines. We live in a world of innovation. Creating patients for life!
Know what to do next
There was a time when in business, the rule was, “If it’s not broke, why fix it?” Do you listen to yourself? The ability to listen to oneself is as important as all the libraries in the world. It’s your life, and you have the intuition to create a direct line to the subconscious mind of the universe. To think creatively you must first “feel” the idea. Make no effort to pinpoint or block the flow of life. Human life is a constant flow of ideas. Your mind must be irritating and agitating. That’s how the creative mind begins. A trip to your imagination is almost like a dream. When we listen to ourselves, when we keep a log of the irritants of every day, when we weave together the irritants of our life, we will find the door to paradise. “People and only people are the luckiest people in the world.” Dr. Robert Montgomery is an occasional contributor to Current Publishing. thinking about hammertoe surgery?
9 ANTI-AGING
By Dr. David Sullivan Current in Carmel
Many people develop what are referred to as hammertoes that are unsightly and often painful. They usually develop because of an imbalance in the muscles of the foot that help flex and extend the toes. The deformity and pain can be worsened with constrictive or ill-fitting shoes. The bony prominence at the joints becomes pronounced and creates an area of increased pressure within the shoe. A bursitis (small, inflamed, fluid-filled sac) may develop over the prominence and be an added source of pain. Conservative treatment options/lifestyle changes include, but are not limited to:
• Wearing appropriate width and depth shoes • Strapping/padding the affected toes • Corticosteroid injection or anti-inflammatory medication for bursitis
Surgeons can shorten the toes strictly for cosmetic reasons, but this is not a widely accepted practice. However, surgical intervention is an option if there is pain. There are several different methods for straightening of the toe. Many of these use wires, screws or other types of implants to maintain the correction of the deformity. Sometimes additional procedures are needed on the joints and bones in the foot where the toes “attach.” A much more simple procedure can be

RABBITS HAVE IT RIGHT – Carrots may help reduce the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, possibly because they are rich in both alpha- and betacarotene. So suggest Dutch researcher after analyzing the diets of almost 6,000 older men as part of the Zutphen Elderly Study. The findings held up even after taking age and lifestyle factors, such as smoking, into consideration. Contrary to previous research, there was no link between vitamin C or E and the risk of cardiovascular death. -Environmental Nutrition

TRIMMER WAIST = HEALTHIER BRAIN – That spare tire around your stomach may spell trouble for your brain. When researchers followed 6,500 members of the Kaiser Permanente managed health care organization for 36 years, the risk of dementia was triple for those who had larger middles in middle age. “It’s not overall obesity, but abdominal adiposity that’s the problem,” notes Mary Haan, professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. COOLING HOT FLASHES – A study from Houston’s Baylor University found that hypnotherapy reduced hot flashes in women who had been treated for breast cancer by almost 70 percent. Benefits included better sleep and decreased depression and anxiety. “Women reported that after therapy, hot flashes interfered less with work and relationships,” says lead investigator Gary Elkins, Ph.D., professor of psychology and neuroscience. -Remedy
performed in the office with only 2-3 bandaids for dressing and splinting. It requires no downtime. When the toe is contracted or hammered, but can be manually corrected during the exam, a simple procedure on the tendon that flexes the toe can be performed. This is done with local anesthesia. No stitches are needed. There is a small amount of loss of muscle strength in the toe, but this is more pronounced in the other types of surgeries mentioned and also typically not that important to the patient that is suffering pain. For the right patient, it is an excellent alternative to a long recovery process. It is also a fraction of the cost when compared to the charges associated with performing surgery.

SCHEDULING DOWNTIME FOR KIDS There might not be a correct number of activities for every child, but ask if your child exhibits some of these warning signs. It might be time to scale back the activity schedule:
• Overanxiousness about getting approval of authority figures • Throws tantrums or “loses” equipment when it’s time to leave for activities
• Can’t fall asleep at bedtime
• Picks fights with siblings or complains you don’t love him or her as much as siblings
• Overeats
• Can’t keep track of activities
• Zones out in front of the TV
• Activity schedule drains you and/or the rest of the family
• Acts grumpy, mopey or irritable
• Complains of stomachaches, headaches or mysterious illnesses

WHAT TO ASK Tracy Stevens, M.D., a cardiologist and medical director of the St. Luke’s Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center in Kansas City, Mo., recommends the following six questions when your doctor opts to order tests and while discussing results: • What will it tell us? • How likely is it to be accurate in my cse?
FREE WHITENING with a complete new patient exam, appropriate cleaning, and xrays.
• Are my results in the normal range? • If not, what do we need to do next? • Are there options for managing this with medication, or will we have to do something more invasive?

“
an I paint over wallpaper?” This question arrives in my mailbox once or twice a week, and my answer is always, “No, never, don’t do it, not on your life.” But there is always an exception! Wallpaper that has been applied to unprimed, unpainted wallboard has no chance of coming off without major damage, so painting over it is about the only option. If that is the direction you are headed, keep in Vicky Earley mind that painting Design over wallpaper will leave visible seams. The only way to avoid this tell-tale evidence is to apply a thin layer of wallboard compound to hide them. An oil-based primer should be used to seal the wallpaper, or latex paint could cause the wallpaper paste to soften, causing the paper to “bubble.” Another “hidden” problem is that many wallpapers have texture that is sometimes not noticeable until painted. Hmm … Are those flowers under your new paint job?
should check with the manufacturer of the texture product. Faux finishing will distract the eye enough to erase most of it visually. Paneling can be sanded lightly and painted with alkyd primer and then with either alkyd or latex paint. Heavily damaged and roughly repaired walls must have the repairs sealed and crack free. It is always difficult, and sometimes impossible, to remove painted-over wallpaper without damaging the walls – especially if your walls are wallboard or a similar product. That being said, texture over wallpaper can make the future removal of the texture far easier than sanding. As with all home improvement projects, the tedious prep step is essential!

PEARLS OF WISDOM – The silk or nylon cord that holds your strand of pearls can wear out. The Cultured Pearl Information Center recommends a fine pearl necklace that is worn a few times each week should be restrung every six months. Pearls worn just a couple of times each month should be restrung once a year. -Household Magic
Once wallpaper has been painted, removing it will become far more tedious and difficult. Paint removes any porosity in the paper and stiffens it by adding more thickness to the wall. The more coats of paint, the worse it gets! I asked faux finisher Jan Keller for her thoughts on the application of faux finish over wallpaper, and – in a moment of weakness – she confessed she has done it. Keller explained that the success of the project depends on how well adhered the paper is and the type of texture you plan to apply. First, if the wallpaper is bubbling or peeling, remove those areas. If the peeling areas are abundant, look at this as a head start on removing the wallpaper, and do it right in the first place! If the paper is going to remain, prime it with – you guessed it – an oil-based primer. If the paper is vinyl or shiny, you should scuff sand it first. Your faux finisher

STICKY SITUATION - The bedroom door sticks every time it’s opened or closed, but the idea of repeatedly hanging and planning or sanding what you think are the trouble spots seems like more work than it’s worth. The quick fix: Tape carbon paper or another type of blued paper along the edge that is sticking. Open and close the door, and the bluing will mark the problem areas, allowing you to sand or plane exactly the points that are causing the door to stick. This works on the side, top or bottom. -realestate.msn.com
Anna Lasbury may be the next Carmel student destined to see her name outlined in lights on a Broadway marquee. The fact that she’s only 11 years old and still in middle school hasn’t hampered her showbiz career one bit. From her role as Duffy in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s current production of “Annie” (through July 3), Lasbury heads to New York City for a special two-week workshop hosted by Broadway Artists Alliance for aspiring teen professionals. You might recognize Lasbury from her stints in HH Gregg commercials or in a number of previous roles at Beef & Boards, where she’s played Violet Beauregarde in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and Birgitta in “The Sound of Music.” “I love playing the part of the spoiled, nasty girl, someone with attitude,” says Lasbury. She’s already a seasoned interviewer who insists she’s nothing like the spoiled characters she loves to portray. She may not be spoiled, but her rise in this difficult career has been fairly meteoric. After telling her mother she wanted to try acting professionally a few years ago, she landed representation as a female

She competed against more than 200 other kids for one of the nine roles in “Annie,” for example, and had to audition for a place in the summer workshop, too. At first, Lasbury didn’t think about training for the musical theater, but she recently started singing and dance lessons, which she will continue in New York this summer. In addition, the summer intensive escorts participants backstage at current productions of “Wicked” and “Billy Elliott,” both musicals with large numbers of child actors, singers and dancers in their cast. Lasbury can’t wait to visit the New York City. Does Lasbury see herself on Broadway one day? You bet! “Keep looking out,” she says with the air of someone much older and more seasoned. “I’ll be there.” In the meantime, Lasbury plans to take a break from musicals in the fall to concentrate on her schoolwork, playing soccer and just being a kid before, with a little bit of luck, landing a role in the Beef & Boards Christmas show.

SOME GRILLING TIPS – If you’re looking for a helping hand with grilling this summer, try these tips to get your grill on. • Get the grill screaming hot. For steaks, chops, and burgers, hold your hand three inches above the grill grate and start counting, “One Mississippi, two Mississippi, etc.” If “ouch” comes at two or three Mississippi, your grill is properly preheated. • Keep it clean. Always clean your grate immediately before and after cooking, using a long-handled stiff wire brush. In a pinch, you can scour the grate with a ball of crumpled aluminum foil held in tongs. • Lube up. Use a tightly folded paper towel dipped in vegetable oil or a chunk of bacon fat held at the end of your tongs to oil the grate before you put on the food. Or do as Israeli grill masters do: Impale half an onion on the end of a barbecue fork. Dip the onion in oil and rub it across the bars of the grate. -www.esquire.com

RED HOT AND COOL
W
hen I was a young apprentice – and about 50 pounds lighter – a chef taught me a saying that to this day has stuck with me: “Watermelon is red hot and cool in June and July.” To this day, we think of the heat of summer quenched by eye appealing, red hot watermelon to cool us at the beach, a backyard barbecue, the county fair or at home. From May Chef Michael through October, Vlasich Americans consume Culinary Explorer more than 4 billion of these nutritious treats. Watermelon is 90 percent water, however, it’s full of Vitamins C and A, iron and potassium, with little sodium, no fat and decent amounts of fiber. Today, watermelons are twice as sweet as the older varieties we remember as kids, and they are about twice the size, with two-thirds less seeds. Due to the science of hybrids, we get the best of all worlds. Of the 50 varieties we generally consume, there are five basic types available with red flesh. The following are some basics. • Jubilee is oblong with a dark green rind, weighing 30 to 33 pounds. • Gray is oblong with a light green rind, weighing 22 to 25 pounds. • Red seedless is round with a semigreen rind, weighing 10 to 12 pounds. • Royal sweet is roundish-oblong with a dark green rind, weighing 14 to 18 pounds.
Spiced watermelon honey • 5 pieces of dried ginger root rough chopped • 4 whole cinnamon sticks • 1 tsp. whole cloves rough chopped • Place all ingredients into a spice bag or sealed cheesecloth pouch • 5 pounds of watermelon rind peeled and rough chopped • 2 cups watered down apple juice • 2 heaping quarts of granulated sugar • 1 small seedless lemon sliced into 1/4 inch slices discarding the ends • 1/2 tsp. sea salt Make sure the watermelon rind (green skin) is peeled and free of the pink meat. Puree in a cuisinart until the consistency of a fruit pulp (approximately 3 quarts). Place this into a heavy gauge sauce pan with the apple juice, bring to a boil and then simmer 40 minutes until it is translucent, soft and pale. Add the spice bag, sugar, lemon and salt, simmer an additional hour or longer if needed until thick. Make sure to stir often. When finished, discard the spice bag and store in hot sterilized jars until ready to use. • Crimson sweet is round with a dark green rind, weighing 22 to 25 pounds.
If you really love watermelon and hate waste, you really must try this recipe for “spiced watermelon honey.” Chef Michael R. Vlasich, CEC, AAC, is a Carmel resident and the executive chef at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. You may e-mail him at chefmichael@currentincarmel.com

BOOK REVIEW What’s a Great Library Worth to You? 10 f o r 10 C a m p a i g n
By Lisa Black One morning, forensic scientist Theresa Maclean is working at a murder scene when she is informed that her police detective fiancé and several others have been taken hostage by two men at the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank. She is able to be close at hand as the city’s best hostage negotiator interacts with the two men. However, when her fiancé is shot, she takes it upon herself to get the criminals to take her and release her fiancé. While inside the bank, she tries to determine the psychological motives behind the bank seizure and whether it is possible for her and the other hostages to get out alive. After eight tense hours, the outcome becomes evident. Lisa Black, herself a forensic scientist, has plotted a thriller that is hard to put down. The minute-by-minute action provides a number of surprises. Theresa Maclean is a believable character with natural impulses and self-doubts. While Theresa is on the outside, the reader sees what happens behind the scenes in a hostage situation. Once she is on the inside, the reader vicariously lives through the crisis, awaiting what happens next with baited breath.

T
orrents are just another way to engage in file sharing on the Internet, though they are technically more efficient (and complicated) than traditional peer-to-peer networks like KaZaa or Limewire. Torrents are actually small control files with the information needed to get a desired file from multiple sources at the same time. With these instructions, it can download chunks of a larger file from multiple users simultaneously (and even out of sequence), and then reassemble the chunks in the proper order on your computer. Torrents are not illegal just as guns are not illegal. It is what is done with the tool that CAN be illegal. If you use torrents to download copyrighted material such as songs, movies or software programs, Gary Hubbard then your actions are illegal. Technology Another concern when downloading files from the torrent networks is contracting various malware from files that are posing as popular content or have hidden Trojans that can sneak malicious code into your computer while you are running or installing the material. Lots of Web sites offer free downloads that are entirely legal, but you may not want what you can get for free because it won’t be the big-name artists, movies or videos. If you don’t have to actually download the content, there are lots of ways to listen to and view copyrighted material for free without breaking the law. Pandora (http://pandora.com) and Last.fm (http://last. fm) are two very popular sites that allow you to listen to
the vast majority of commercial artists and even create your own radio station based on your tastes. YouTube has a “movie” channel (http://www.youtube. com/movies) that allows you to watch free movies, mostly independent films and older commercial movies that weren’t major hits. WARNING: Many Web sites and ads that you encounter in either search results or banner ads will claim that you can download movies and music for free. If the content they are offering is first-run movies or brand new music, consider it illegal or a scam. Malicious software programmers know they can infect people who are not paying attention, and this is one of the most common ways to get your computer infected. So be vigilant when searching for free content! Gary Hubbard is the owner of Data Doctors Computer Services - www.datadoctors.com. Have a technology question? ROCK STARS!
I recently received a pretty blatant reminder, thanks to Gene and Dorinda Dick, of our sweet spot and how grateful it is to have our passion as our profession. Over a few intense days, our team transformed a previously cramped and sterile space into an edgy backyard retreat for these two lovebirds! Was it the largest project of the year or the most dramatic design Randy ever accomplished? No. But it Sorrell smartly reflected their vision and is a fantastic example of tasteful transformation. We could have completed the project sooner, but the guys were busy enjoying her cookies, posing for pictures of the progress and taking more than a few jabs from Geno. They felt like rock stars!

We included some of our favorite sunny drought tolerant perennials and Karl Forester ornamental grass, which were grown 15 inspiring miles north of Carmel, along with profusely flowering Wine and Rose Wiegela (it’s gotta be good with a name like that). Shockingly, our workmen wore bio-friendly wool clothing sheared under the watchful eyes of PETA from Hamilton County range-fed sheep, using recycled soy dye and manufactured using local labor. So, let this article be a shout out to all the economically stimulating Carmel consumers like the Dicks, who continue to generously support the entrepreneurs who have been fortunate enough to discover their sweet spot. Basil may be the most well-known Italian herb. Basil is an annual warmseason herb that is sensitive to cold weather. While you may be familiar with dried basil, enthusiasts will tell you that nothing compares to a few fresh basil leaves. Basil is relatively easy to grow and makes a great addition to your vegetable garden. Grow basil next to your peppers or tomatoes; basil is said to improve the flavor of its neighboring plants. Basil is also said to repel flies and mosquitoes! When planting basil, pick a site with full sun. Basil prefers warm to hot weather and a pH of 5.57.0. Basil can be planted in pots as well as directly in the ground. It requires low watering and should be propagated by seed. Basil’s most common enemies are the Japanese beetle, slugs and snails. Start seeds inside and transplant when a few inches tall. To avoid an infestation of slugs and snails, line your garden with copper strips or wire mesh. The charge that builds up on the copper surface repels both pests away from your garden as they are unable to move across it. Basil must be pinched back as it begins to flower, as once it flowers it loses flavor. Pruning back the flowers will also encourage it to grow bushier. Leaves should be cut in the morning after the dew has dried. Do not wash basil leaves, as they will lose their flavor. -www.helpfulgardener.com

pets of the week
Gretchen is a 3-year-old female gray tabby DSH. Gretchen is a quiet and gentle girl who arrived at the shelter when her previous owner no longer wanted her because she wasn’t fond of young children. She enjoys attention, but little ones who are too young to understand they shouldn’t pull on a kitty’s tail are what she wants to avoid. Gretchen is spayed and litter-box trained, and she would love to have a loving home again. For more information on these and other animals at the Humane Society, call 317-7734974 or go to www.hamiltonhumane.com.
why do dogs chew? For Current in Carmel
Chewing actually is not such a bad thing for a dog to do. It is necessary to the physical and mental health of the dog. However, as you might have guessed, the real concern here is not that the dog chews, it’s what the dog chews. For a puppy, one of the most important first survival lessons is the use of its mouth and jaws. Mouthing, by definition, is a puppy’s unending desire to bite at your hands, feet, shoes or hemlines. Because this behavior can be destructive and hurtful, puppy owners usually want it to cease as soon as possible. Yet, one of the biggest mistakes owners make is coming down too hard on a mouthing puppy.
MOUTHING IS LEARNING
During the socialization phase of your pet’s development (approximately the first four to 16 weeks), your puppy is learning what is and what is not appropriate behav-
ior. He will bite constantly at everything that moves, including the tail, ears and legs of his own mother. Because the puppy’s milk teeth are so sharp, it takes very little pressure to bring about a quick and startling response from Mom. After perhaps hundreds of these types of encounters, the puppy finally learns to be gentle when playing with other members of his canine group. With training and a bit of patience, this important lesson will carry over into your puppy’s relationship with people. As a new puppy owner, you should allow your pet to mouth, correcting him repeatedly, but in a mild fashion, when he bites too hard. Reacting in a sharp and startling way with a loud “hey” works with many puppies.
CHEWING RELIEF
During early development, your puppy also uses chewing to constantly sample the taste and texture of many different
things in the environment. During teething, chewing helps relieve the constant dull pain in your pet’s gums. Chewing also strengthens the teeth and gums. But one of the main benefits of chewing is often overlooked: Chewing releases tension. If your pets build up excess tension, and chewing is something that helps release that tension, then your puppy might get into the habit of constantly chewing furniture, clothing and carpeting. To curb this chewing addiction, you should be offering your puppy a variety of appropriate toys to chew, followed by praise for doing so. Under normal conditions, your puppy’s constant need to chew will diminish as it matures. A healthy and well-balanced dog still will enjoy chewing, but it easily can be satisfied with a pet-safe bone or other types of chew toys. Article courtesy of Petland, Carmel. his is not going to be easy to admit. In fact, it’s going to be almost impossible. You see, I have writer’s block. Writer’s block is when, well it’s kind of like, you know, it happens after you … it’s a time when you can’t ... I think you get the picture. I’ve been suffering with it for the last month. As I recall, I woke up with it in the middle of the night toward the end of April. I was sweating, my heart was Dick Wolfsie palpitating, and I Humor had discomfort in my chest. At first, I thought it was a heart attack. No one really knows the origin of writer’s block, but apparently every great writer has had it. Issac Asimov is probably an exception. He wrote 150 books, so he had little time for blockage. But I agree with Truman Capote, who once said of another well-known prolific writer: “That’s not writing, that’s typewriting.” By the way, to make the last line funny, you need to say it like Truman would. I’ll wait while you do that. I have nothing else to do. In order to overcome this writer’s disease, I did consider trying a number of techniques that some of my writer friends have warned against. I got down my huge volumes of Art Buchwald essays, Andy Rooney essays and Dave Barry essays. I mean the books were just filled with great ideas: why sock sizes are silly, the junk you find when you clean out your fridge, when not to tip a waiter, the problem with haircuts, funny street names, weird things airline pilots say, strange things to do with ketchup. I was in heaven. My problem was solved. Except I had a new problem: journalistic integrity. Not that that had ever been a problem for me before. You see, this is the dilemma with coming up with what you think is a unique idea. Basically, you’re always too late. Here’s an example: Several weeks ago I wrote an essay on napping. A few days later I was talking to an old friend who now teaches European history in Washington, DC. I had sent him the column and wanted to know what he thought. “Yes, very funny, Dick. By the way, did you know Leonardo da Vinci wrote a very funny essay on napping?” “You’re kidding. How many years ago was that?” “Oh, about 500.” “Do you think I’m the first since da Vinci?” “I’m sure you are, Dick. I’m sure you

are.” Well, that made me feel a little better. I just hope the da Vinci family doesn’t read any of the newspapers my column appears in. I don’t want to get sued. That’s not the kind of family you want legal problems with. I tried one more thing. I decided not to bathe, shave or eat for several days. The hope was that by adopting this strict,
austere presence, my creative juices would flow as in all starving, destitute writers who are dedicated to the art of the printed word. I forgot that a lot of this starving, destitute stuff is because they can’t think of an idea either. It’s Sunday night and I’ve just about given up. Think I’ll turn on “60 Minutes” and see what Andy Rooney has to say. I hope it’s not a piece about writer’s block. He seems like
such a nice guy. I’d hate to sue him. One final note. You’re probably questioning whether I really have writer’s block. After all, I wrote this column, didn’t I? I sure did. But I actually wrote this nine years ago when I had a very mild case. I’m glad I did. Because this time it’s serious. Dick Wolfsie is an author, columnist, and speaker. Texas Hold ‘Em or trying to stay awake by guessing which classmates are naked under their robes. The speech is about what you’d expect from a guy who is chairman of the widget company with which the aforementioned trustee wants to do business. Not being in the widget business, I have never been asked to give a graduation speech. I’ve always wanted to, though. In fact, I have my speech pretty much put together. It goes like this: Graduates, teachers, administrators, parents, Grandmas: Let’s keep this short. By that I mean let’s

attention (in addition to Mom and Dad and Grandma). The speech is about what you would expect from people who never missed a day and carried their homework in briefcases. Then comes the headliner, the main event, the guest speaker, who is often the gasbag friend of someone on the board of trustees. He will exhort the class to be The Generation That Changes The World By Honoring The Past While Marching Bravely Into The Future, by which time the last 30 rows of graduates will be sleeping. The rest will be making out, playing
skip the bushwa about changing the world and instead just accept the fact that the world so far seems to keep turning despite all we do to it, and if we’re lucky and we wise up about a few things, that will continue to be the case. Now that that’s out of the way, we can turn to more practical matters, such as advice for people who are being turned out into the world with plenty of education but not much in the way of clues. Here it is: Watch the tire pressure. Don’t text when you can talk. If it’s addictive, be careful. You’re probably not the first person to do whatever is you’re contemplating. Think twice about that tattoo. The people in the other cars don’t really care to hear your music. “Reality” shows are for dopes. Do good work. Be nice to each other. Watch your cholesterol. Smile and you’ll feel better. Don’t forget to play. Above all, keep in mind that life is tough, and it does not get easier with experience, but it’s worth it. It really is. Besides, if things get too difficult, you can always go back to school.

t is graduation time again – the time when we march millions upon millions of young people through a ceremony that has gone unchanged since the beginning of time, making them wear ridiculous clothes and waste several hours on a perfectly good afternoon all on the flimsy excuse that Grandma wants to see it. It is a ceremony of completion, a ceremony of advancement, a ceremony of moving into the basement Mike Redmond Humor so you can “figure things out” before going on to Whatever Comes Next, six or seven years from now. And if my own experience is any indication, it is a colossal bore, mostly because of the speakers. The student speakers, of course, are all earnest and serious, exhorting their classmates to be The Generation That Changes The World and assuring the adults that We Will Honor The Past While Marching Bravely Into The Future and acting, for the most part, as if someone is actually paying

RUNNING ON AT THE COLUMN By Brandie Bohney Current in Careml
I usually try not to do “series” columns, but run-on sentences go hand-in-hand with fragments, so it seemed like a logical follow-up to last week’s column. Unlike fragments, run-on sentences really don’t have any rhetorical purpose. Even a skilled writer isn’t going to intentionally use run-ons for any kind of emphasis or flourish. For that reason, it’s especially important to be able to recognize and correct run-on sentences. A run-on sentence is two or more independent clauses connected by improper punctuation (or no punctuation at all). See if you can identify the run-on sentences below: Marcus was homesick and he wanted to leave camp. Draft horses are very large, however most are very gentle.
If you said both are run-on sentences, you are correct. The first is a run-on because it lacks a comma. It has two independent clauses: Marcus was homesick and he wanted to leave camp. The clauses are combined with a coordinating conjunction (and), so a
comma after homesick is the only necessary punctuation to correct the error. The second is tricky because most people think conjunctive adverbs – in this case however – are interchangeable with coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, for, nor, so, yet). They aren’t. I’ve pounded away at this misconception before: To connect two independent clauses with only a comma, you must use a coordinating conjunction. Otherwise, you wind up with a special kind of run-on sentence: the dreaded comma splice. Use of a conjunctive adverb requires two separate sentences or a semicolon and a comma: Draft horses are very large. However, most are gentle. Draft horses are very large; however, most are gentle.
I prefer the latter example in most cases (perhaps because of my affinity for the semicolon), but both are correct.
