TRY IT Is there a roller girl in you? Find out. Workshops begin July 7, on Tuesdays and Thursdays nights, where you can see if you are cut out for the sport and the time commitment. Weight training, workouts and skating drills prepare future rollers. Tryouts are on August 2.

Do you have an alter ego? Maybe you need one. Take Carmel resident and executive Mary Kinietz. For more information about the league, see Monday through Friday, Mary is a business manager. I used to have two best friends, now I have 30.” After the bouts, skaters and fans go out. “Bad calls and elbows are all forgotten at the after party,” she says. Away games this year included Alabama, North Carolina, Minnesota and Louisville. One fan blogger described the bouts as “…an exciting mix of feminism, punk rock, muscle, chutzpah and moxie.” Jen X (Nicole Guio) of Carmel says skating is a huge time commitment, “…but how often can you do something like this for a couple of years in your life? I’ll have something to tell my grandchildren.” Bloody Mary is proof that athletes and fans alike experience the temporary but empowering mild mannered reporter/super hero shift. Mary and her cheerleading squad did not get woozy watching the campy derby queens whirl around in circles during their bouts. No word if Bloody Mary and her party got dizzy as they circled through countless round-a-bouts all the way back home to Carmel.

It is our opinion that popular social networking Web sites like Facebook are aggressively blurring the line between networking and direct marketing. And we’re not sure this is a good thing. Seeking an update of our friends and family, we are routinely confronted with a notification about the latest must-attend event at some unknown tavern. When do these advertisements become an inhibitor to continued participation? When do they get in the way of the reason we participated in the first place? We believe it is time that Facebook, MySpace and others must clean up the line between marketing and networking.

There is a place for both. And these sites offer a cheap source of advertising for many who can’t otherwise market their products. But we encourage these sites to devise a methodology to keep information flowing without overflowing our e-mail inboxes with unpaid and unsolicited directmarketing appeals. Sadly, as we get more activity from companies wanting our business than friends trying to get in touch, our attention will shift to other methods. And that is the market that should most concern these social networking sites. Take the responsibility now and make sure networking comes before marketing.

EIGHT REASONS TO START INVESTING NOW

The market follows events. Events create trends, and trends are the only truth in the market. Everything else is just opinions. Never in the history of the world have there been so many people with their pockets stuffed with money – and wanting to invest. There are many opportunities in the market but the two I’m suggesting you look at are Bob new defense spendMontgomery ing and opportunities in Canada. Defense spending is huge.

2 3 4

• The war defense budget is 48 percent of the worlds total spending on military defense. • We are motivated by fear, and we are getting ready to defend our interests anywhere in the world. • Defense spending is still behind its own budget. • Defense spending will hire people and pay them well. • The price of defense company stocks are still down, because Obama continues to

vocalize first on defense. • We will not be able to have our Army troops in Iraq come home on schedule. We can not leave Afghanistan defenseless with Iran on one side and Pakistan on the other. • China is busy creating a mysterious alliance under the world’s largest democracy and wants to be ready when the time comes. • We are now the world’s largest manufacturer of military equipment,

China is enjoying a fast recovery from the recession. China has trillions of dollars from many nations and has 30,000 people, well educated and counting on things to buy. New jobs follow new defense weapons construction. New jobs add to the potential of every market and increase the sale of everything. Our banks are loaded with money and need to loan numerous amounts. Canada ... There is more to the great white north than oil. The conservative banking system has been too strong to be ignored. If you want to participate, get involved with companies like Atlantic Power at $7 or $8.

A surprise bonus to the whole deal was how excited we got to start cutting back. Most of you know what I said a few weeks back about giving up my vacations and cleaning help just to save money – no way in any of the nine circles of Hell would that ever happen! – but now with my husband on board, sacrificing his beloved Qdoba and spontaneous tech purchases, I feel totally different. Swimming for the Children By Jim Clark I’m in training to swim the English Channel for some very good reasons. Every day American children die from malnutrition. Every day American children die because they don’t have medical treatment. Every night, regardless of the weather, American children go to sleep hungry Jim under bridges and in alleys. This cannot continue. When President John F. Kennedy challenged Americans to go to the moon we went to the moon, thus proving there is almost nothing the American people can’t accomplish. It is with this rich heritage in mind that I have declared: With the Good Lord’s help, we’re going to feed, clothe, house and educate through college every disadvantaged child in America - without one penny from the government.

The first step is to feed disadvantaged American children. As with anything else, it takes money. That’s where the Children’s Champion International Championship comes in. With it, we can raise a potentially unlimited amount of money. A Children’s Champion is a person who makes a donation. The Children’s Champion International Championship is a competition between Children’s Champions who encourage other people to make a donation. When one million donations have been raised, the 10 Champions who raised the highest number of donations each will receive $100,000 cash and their choice of a new Cadillac or Corvette. The next 5,000 Champions who raised the highest number of donations each will receive a new iPhone. Participation is easy. All you have to do is e-mail or hand your Champion ID and Web link to a person and encourage them to make a donation. Using the money raised is the next step. That’s where Uncle Jim’s Chuck Wagon comes in. Instead of a covered wagon like those found in the wild, wild, west, Uncle Jims Chuck Wagon will be an airport-type shuttle. It will have dropdown trays behind each

seat and a galley like the ones found on airplanes. The chuck wagons will cruise the neighborhoods where disadvantaged children are, just like ice cream trucks cruise the neighborhoods where advantaged children are, and will make frequent stops as the children come out. Any child who is hungry will be able to board Clark the chuck wagon and enjoy a hot meal and a bottle of cold water with no strings attached. Many folks already do a lot for charity. Everest than have swum the English Channel, and there’s a reason as few as 10 percent of those who try to swim the English Channel succeed; it’s a difficult and sometimes dangerous task. The water is cold enough to cause fatal hypothermia, currents are strong enough to drag even the strongest swimmer out to sea, fog is thick enough to get a swimmer lost, darkness, sharks; giant jellyfish capable of stinging a swimmer to death, sea snakes loaded with lethal venom, blood sucking lamprey, and more than 800 ships a day passing through the area are a few of the impediments encountered by those who make the attempt. At best, swimming the English Channel is tough duty. About the swimmer Jim Clark is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Jim Clark and Associates, a leading retirement planning firm based in Carmel. He is an athlete, published author, business consultant, radio and television producer, talk show host, and nationally recognized public speaker. He is the creator of Swimming for the Children, an international project dedicated to ending the pain and suffering of disadvantaged children.

merchants’ fest ready to kick off Merchants’ Fest, beginning Friday evening, will feature events for the entire family, giveaways and live music to increase awareness for Merchants’ Square. The shopping plaza on 116th Street and Keystone Parkway has come together to let the Carmel community know that even with the Keystone construction project, the shops and restaurants in the area are very much alive. Beginning at 6 p.m. July 17, merchants in the area plan to hold sidewalk sales, and restaurants will have booths with free and discounted food. Festivities will continue July 18 beginning at noon and lasting until 9 p.m. with drawings including a grand prize of VIP Brickyard 400 tickets, live music from the Carmel City Singers and other local bands and the Arthur Murray Professional dance competition. Brent Edstrom, a member of the city’s Business Advancement Committee put together to combat revenue loss due to the construction, has been working on the event for almost 18 months.

“Even though a few businesses have left the area, including Old Navy and Finish Line, we want to make sure people know that there is a lot of viable retail here,” Edstrom said. Charles Braswell, owner of local eatery Mellow Mushroom and also a member of the committee, organized food vendors such as Longhorn Steakhouse, MCL Cafeteria and Baskin Robbins to participate. “This is a chance for local restaurants to participate in a community event,” Braswell said. “It’s also a chance for the community to hear music, sample great food and revisit the area if they’ve missed it because of construction.” “Dancing with the Carmel Stars” will showcase the boogieing prowess of local celebrities like County Commissioner Christine Altman, Asst. Police Chief Tim Green and co-host of Connecting with Carmel Jeff Worrell. Events for the whole family include a children’s activity area, live local bands and NASCAR show cars. FULL SATISFACTION – Have you heard the rumor that ice cream is more satisfying if you lick it off the cone than if you eat it with a spoon? Guess what? It’s true, according to Kay McMath, a food technologist for New Zealand’s Massey University. “Flavor in ice cream is released when the fat—which carries the flavor—is warmed to at least body temperature,” says McMath. When you lick ice cream it coats the tongue

PLANNING A BABY? – When couples begin trying to get pregnant, generally women are more concerned about the condition of their bodies than the would-be daddies. But if conception is your goal, Dad may need a weight-loss plan first. Heavy men produce less semen and have more sperm abnormalities, both of which lower the odds of conceiving. -Good Housekeeping

In addition to following commonsense guidelines, consumers have some resources available. USP review is voluntary, and although available to manufacturers worldwide for a fee, not all companies are willing to pay for testing. Visit usp.org for more information. how to avoid mediocrity

I

t’s mid-2009, and America continues its spiral toward abject mediocrity. It’s a national epidemic. Our country is becoming mediocre because its citizens are willing to tolerate mediocrity in their lives. An increasing number, it appears, celebrate it. Andrew Carnegie said, “People who are unable to motivate themselves must be content with mediocrity, no matter how impressive their other talents.” OUCH. Are you an underachievKent Burns er, allowing yourself On Success to be content with mediocrity? If you need a swift kick in the pants, here are some ideas to get you moving in the right direction once again:

• Provide yourself more structure. Keeping a tighter calendar doesn’t necessarily mean more appointments. It means continually protecting your time for its highest and best use – including rest, fun and family time. If at all possible, go to bed and awake at roughly the same time daily. Stop skipping meals. • Be the best-mannered person others will encounter all day. Enjoy the show as people are routinely blown away. • Give a full day’s work for a day’s wage. Spend less time on your favorite Web sites; don’t waste time forwarding joke and chain e-mails. You won’t get hit by a bus if you don’t forward this to ten people. • Encourage others continuously Most of us are painfully aware of our shortcomings; but when is the last time you were sincerely praised for your strengths?

Try a few of these this week and watch what happens. You’ll suddenly feel less mediocre. Kent Burns is a Carmel resident, investor and cofounder of CrossConfirm. He is also a professional speaker and author of What’s Your Why? He can be reached at kent@currentincarmel.com.

• Keep your eye on the prize. You know the old saying, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.” Most of us spend way too much time in the weeds. Tell somebody your objective(s), and give them permission to hold you accountable. Don’t hide. Put yourself out there with

upholstry fabric makes the grade

lease don’t be offended if I wad up the sofa fabric you have selected. It is nothing personal. Really. Upholstery fabric involves so much more than a pretty pattern and a nice color, so I just might wad it up, dig at it, pull at fibers and drop water on it. Abusing it now is a “fast-forward” glimpse at how a textile will endure the test of wear. Upholstery fabrics typically range from “A” on the less Vicky Earley expensive end and Design can go as far as the “should be made of spun gold” grade Z. Keep in mind that a higher grade does not indicate durability. Grades vary from one upholstery manufacturer to another and are based on variables like intricacy of the weave, fiber content and construction – all factors that impact cost. Cotton and cotton blend provide decent resistance to wear, fading and pilling, but are less resistant to soiling and wrinkling. Surface treatments and blend-

ing with other fibers often compensate for these weaknesses. Durability and use depend on the weave and finish Leather is, perhaps, the best all-around upholstery “fabric” ever! This tough material comes in a variety of colors and finishes and develops more character and softness with age. Scratches are considered patina, so this upholstery option is forgiving and easy to clean. Linen provides a clean, fresh look, unless you are going to sit on it. This textile is best suited for formal living rooms or adult areas, because it soils and wrinkles easily While it won’t withstand heavy wear, linen does resist pilling and fading. Linen must be professionally cleaned to avoid shrinking. Silk is a beautiful, delicate fabric that is suitable for formal or low-use areas. It should be backed with a reinforcing material to make it durable enough for upholstery use. Silk must be professionally cleaned if soiled. Wool and wool blends are sturdy and durable and offer good resistance to pill-

ing, fading, wrinkling and soil. If you have ever settled into a cozy chair covered in Mohair, you just might be a convert to wool Acrylic is a synthetic that was initially developed as a substitute for wool, and it resists wear, wrinkling, soiling and fading. Low-quality acrylic may tend to pill excessively in high-wear situations. Better-quality acrylics are manufactured to resist pilling. Microfiber is a term used to describe a new category of upholstery fabrics with a velvety, suede-like surface. This introduction to the furniture industry is made from ultra-fine polyester fibers. Microfiber fabrics are durable and soft to the touch. Polyester is used alone in upholstery or blended with other fibers to add wrinkle resistance, eliminate crushing and reduce fading. Poly that is used solo is subject to stretching and is better used in conjunction with other fibers. Vicky Earley is the principal designer for Artichoke Designs in downtown Carmel. MAN HANDS • Smooth the edges. Nail files are just as important as they are embarrassing, but having your nails fully rounded will keep you from picking at them. Don’t try to use the little file on your clippers -- get a real one. • Don’t cut your cuticle, that thin layer of skin that grows over the base of each nail. It’s not sanitary, and it’s not safe. Push it back after you shower, when your skin is softest. • Leave a little bit of white at the tips of your nails. Cutting too close to the nail bed can cause infections and frustration when you find a spare penny. According to the guys at Truman’s, it’s time to trim when you touch the end of your finger and can feel your nail.

BRUSH TO SUIT “Unlike other cosmetics, mascara and its applicator work as a system,” says New York City makeup artist Jessica Liebskind. So what will work best for you? • STRAIGHT wands, which often feature tight, coarse bristles, are best for playing up individual lashes rahter than making one sweeping stroke. • TAPERED (or football-shaped) brushes, which usually have flffy bristles, deliver a light, feathery coat. They are designed to give lashes body rather than provide definition. • CURVED brushes are good for anyone who is not very comfortable applying mascara: they make it easy to coat the lashes in one swoop. • HYBRID brushes can fulfill multiple jobs. A straight, fluffy brush, for example, can giec lashes definition and volume. -Martha Stewart Living

By Christi Thompson If you are anything like me, you are agonizing over how to wear your hair on your big day. After all, it is a very special day, and it is important to look and feel your best! Deciding on the perfect hairstyle requires some thought, so consider these tips when finalizing your ‘do plan. 1 Talk to your stylist. Several months before your big day, get professional tips on what to do to get (and keep) your hair in the best shape possible. If you are thinking about a drastic change in hair color or style, it is best to try it out many months before.

bIgger Is better

By Christi Thompson Most women dream of recreating the voluminous, bombshell hair that can be found on magazine covers and all along the red carpet. Instead of wishing, try these simple steps to help the dream become a reality. To begin, towel dry your hair and mist a leave-in conditioner (such as Biominoil Leave In Treatment) and a volumizer (try Brocato’s Volumizing Tonic). Then begin blow drying your roots while pulling them away from your scalp. When your hair is completely dry, wrap 1-inch sections in Velcro rollers. Once your

It all started when Angela was a guest at Salon 01. “When I was 20, a girl from Salon01 used to do my hair,” said Angela. “This inspired me to take my dream of becoming a special effect makeup artist to another level by going to cosmetology school.” Who knew that Angela’s dream of making it big in this industry would come true here with Salon01! Recently another dream of Angela’s came true, she became Mrs. Bloehs and the Salon01 family couldn’t be happier for her!

2 Plan early. If you have short hair or bangs you would like to grow out, begin the process immediately. It takes short hair many months to reach shoulder length or longer, which is ideal for many up-do styles. 3 Consider your dress style. During the consultation with your stylist, bBring in a picture of your dress if you have one. With careful consideration and open dialogue with a professional stylist, you will ensure that the end result will be one you love! You will gain joy looking back over your wedding photos for years to come.

hair is set, blow dry with a diffuser for another 10 minutes on the hot setting, then 10 minutes on the cool setting. After removing the rollers, combine a drop of shine serum (like Brocato’s Shine Drops) and a light hold gel (Salon 01 brand Flex Hold Gel) in the palms of your hands. Run your hands throughout your hair and move your voluminous locks into place. For added boost, gently tease your roots around the crown of your head. Finish off the process with a blast of moveable hold hairspray to keep your ’do in place.

Angela really likes doing total make-overs. “I love being a part of the beauty and fashion world,” said Angela. She can look at the overall picture, and can help others create a totally new look from hair to makeup and fashion. “There are lots of things to consider when giving someone a new look. This includes knowing how to pair a great haircut with the right face shapes. If the haircut does not complement the face shape, the whole look can be off.” Book an appointment with Angela today! Get your shine on Lip gloss is one of the most popular makeup products on the market. It has the ability to transform lips instantly into a reflecting pout, and is a staple for women of all ages. Lip gloss is easy to use and provides quick results. It is easy to apply, even without a mirror. While lip gloss is a coveted makeup bag essential, it often lacks the staying power of lipstick. But, if you brush on powder or use a matte lipstick

before applying the gloss, you will find that it lasts a lot longer. Spring is the perfect time to try a new, glistening lip shade. Whether you enjoy a berry gloss, or something more natural like peach or nude, the makeup artists at Salon 01 can help you choose a shade that is perfect for your skin tone.

say what you mean; mean what you say By Brandie Bohney Current in Carmel

When most people think of diction, they think of clarity when speaking or singing. Diction has another meaning, though: word choice. In addition to meaning speaking and pronouncing words in a way that is easy to understand, diction also refers to choosing words in a way that fits their context. One of the reasons it is tremendously important to pay attention to the words you choose is that by being lazy with your diction, you may be unintentionally misunderstood or say something you don’t really mean. For example, I’m a jogger. I don’t run; I jog. Running has the connotation of a certain speed and grace, neither of which describe me accurately. If you look only at denotation (the literal meaning of a word), I guess I could be a runner, but connotation (inferred or implied additional meaning of a word or phrase) indicates that a runner would be fast. On the other hand, call a real runner a jogger, and you may wind up with running-shoe tread marks on your head. And it’ll happen fast. Here’s another example: When you get a really terrific bargain on something you purchase, do you refer to the item as cheap? Probably not. Cheap tends to

R

connote an item of low quality in addition to low price. Cheap does not generally make a person think of a good deal. In fact, it often means just the opposite: While the purchaser didn’t pay much for the cheap item, he or she also didn’t get much for the money. The killer antique end table you scored at an estate sale might be a bargain, a deal, a steal, or one of a dozen other terms, but it’s not cheap. Diction is especially important in critical documents such as resumes and cover letters, presentations, letters of recommendation, and so on. Even the difference between very similar words can be less subtle than you think in certain contexts. Consider the difference between large, enormous, massive and hulking. Each says something a little different. And how about great, excellent and exemplary? Also more different than you may initially think. Pay attention to your word choice so your diction doesn’t create fiction. LOBSTER TIPS – Prepare lobster yourself at home in three easy steps: cook, drain, eat. Hold the lobster behind the head and gently drop it into boiling water. Time in the water will depend on size. When it’s finished boiling, snip the tips of the claws over the pot to drain the liquid so it doesn’t wind up on the plate. Remove the tail meat by running a fork along the inside edge of the shell and then lifting the meat out in one piece. -Martha Stewart Living

WALKER

He might be known for writing Jamie Foxx’s hit hip-hop single “Blame It on the Alcohol,” but 21-year-old Nate Walker is blaming his success on Carmel. While Carmel might not seem like the center of the hip-hop and rap industries, the songwriter and music artist said the city gave him the boost he needed to pursue a career in the music business. “I definitely look at Carmel as the reason I’m doing what I’m doing right now,” Walker said. Walker, originally from Nashville, Tenn., lived in Carmel with his sister for two years after high school as he attempted to launch a music career. Working at the Hollister clothing store in Castleton Mall, he found a friend in another music-business hopeful, Stefan Burrows. At the time, Burrows was a senior at Carmel High School. Walker and Burrows built a working relationship by writing a fight song for Carmel High School called “Crank Dat Blue and Gold.” The song played as part of halftime shows for the Carmel football team the rest of the year. “We had been doing music on the side for awhile,” Burrows said, “but (Carmel) is kind of where everything came together.” After their fight song success, the two spent as much time as they could promoting their work, including handing out CDs in Broad Ripple. Hollister offered Walker a full-time career with the company, which he turned down promptly. “It was financial security,” Walker said, “but my whole life was on paper, and it was definitely not the way I wanted it to be.” Walker moved to Atlanta and finally to Los Angeles to pursue his music dreams. “Blame It…,” performed by Jamie Foxx and featuring T-Pain, has sold more than 1 million downloads and peaked at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 list. Walker said he is currently working on his own album and hopes to release his first single this month. “I want to become a big deal,” Walker said. “Carmel deserves a big deal.”

n summer, it’s easy to fall into the daily grind, full of stress and gore. This stress is compounded by parents’ responsibility to provide three square meals daily, instead of the one-and-a-half. We want to reduce the stress that weighs heavy on our minds, bodies and spirits. By improving our choices and eating habits, we can affect the top four concerns of doctors: nutrition, fitness, stress reduction and renewal. Chef Michael As a chef dealing Vlasich with the public, Culinary Explorer it has become apparent to me that the average person is confused and unsure of the basics of stress control and reduction. The following are some basic reasons we may eat those foods that give us false gratification. Carbohydrates increase serotonin, which is a calming chemical that counters irritability and depression. Science shows that when we consume, the result in digestion takes 90 minutes from raw carbs to the amino acid tryptophan that positively modifies the serotonin levels that can last up to three hours. Other foods can act as a “high,” just like a runner might experience after a run, because of the endorphins, which are pleasure enhancers. year, or 42,000 calories. Generally, most folks’ weaknesses hit in the afternoon, paralleling other studies showing this is the most stressful time of the day. To really top it off, we probably want it again after dinner while the brain drone occurs in front of the TV. If even a simple mind like mine can understand and identify this phenomenon, why am I still 30-plus pounds on the plus side? Since all of us fail to consume the usual celery sticks, rice crackers or yogurtcoated fruit, maybe it’s time to try a new angle, like thinking in combination categories such as warm and sweet, crunchy and salty, smooth and fruity or crispy and crunchy. The following is my version of “Gorp.” It is quick and easy, yet satisfies most the above combination categories. Chef Michael R. BOOK REVIEW The Year of Living Biblically

By A.J. Jacobs A.J. Jacobs attempts to follow the laws and rules of the Bible as literally as possible for one year, but as an agnostic Jew, this is no easy or natural task. With the help of friends and advisors (Jewish, Christian and Amish), he begins his hilarious journey with the Old Testament and a new beard. Jacobs spends the first nine months as an orthodox Jew and the last three months emerged in Christian rituals. Jacobs chronicles his account with humor, history and lore. His very patient and forgiving wife and young son round out a story that is sure to entertain readers of any faith. This is a very witty and clever memoir that begins as an experiment but ends with personal reflection. While the author puts himself into absurd, laugh-out-loud situations, he is serious about his pursuit. It is a tribute to his storytelling ability that he is able to keep the tone light and the story from becoming ridiculous with his insight and biblical history.

DISPATCHES USB HUB FAN – With the variety of USB hubs out there, it’s easy to look past most novelty hubs, but this one from gadget4all catches the eye not only because it’s cute and unique, with the airplane shape, but the propeller doubles as a fan. There are 4 USB ports and an on/off switch for the fan. Another cute feature is the airplane motor noise that plays for a few seconds when you first switch the fan on. So if you’re in the market for a cute USB hub, this might be your pick. -the-gadgeteer.com ECO-SPEAKERS - Pekka Salokannel’s Gramo Speaker concept is an eco -- and aural -- treat. They’ve been specifically designed for a digital music lifestyle. They can cozy up to your laptop, transform into a tabletop speaker, or be taken on a picnic along with your iPod. Oh yeah, and they’re powered completely by three layers of photovoltaic panels. And for any nocturnal booty-shaking you might have planned, the solar panels charge an internal battery pack . But it’s their portability that’s the real win. The speakers can completely unfold so they are flat enough to carry around in your pocket. -www.treehugger.com

STOP BITES WITH YIPES - Puppies bite. This is not a form of aggression, but a form of play and communication. It’s important to train a puppy not to bite in play or to communicate, as this behavior can become unacceptable and even dangerous in an adult dog. This is a very important lesson for a puppy to learn. For many puppies, all it takes is the owner “Yiping” when puppy teeth touch human skin for them to stop this behavior. Give a “Yipe!” and stop the game for about 15 minutes after you’ve had to yipe to get pup to take teeth off you. That’s what another puppy would do, and it helps the puppy understand. This sound needs to be what a puppy would do when the idea is “Ouch! That hurts! I don’t like it! Stop it right now!” -www.veterinarypartner.com

is your dog a door-darter? By John Mikesell Current in Carmel

Five things to do when your dog dashes out the door:

1

Catch him. Easier said than done, you may say. An accomplished door darter is often an accomplished keep-away player as well. Don’t chase; you’ll just be playing his game. Play a different game instead – something else fun. Does he love squeaky toys? Grab one, take it outside and squeak it. When he looks, run away, still squeaking. If he chases after you, let him grab one end of the toy. Play a little tug, trade him for a treat, then squeak it and play tug some more. Let him follow you, playing tug the squeaky,

into your fenced yard, and close the gate behind you. Play more squeaky with him. If he loves car rides, run to your car and say, “Wanna go for a ride?!” Open the car door and invite him in. My partner’s favorite trick with her dog was to drive the car down the street. Her dog would just jump in.

2

Reward, don’t punish. You’ve managed to get hold of your cavorting canine. No matter how upset you are, don’t yell at him! Don’t even reprimand him calmly He’ll associate the punishment with returning to you, not with darting out the door. Don’t even take him back inside immediately – that’s punishment, too.

3

Create “airlocks” for your doors. Even if you can’t fence in your yard, you can put up a woven wire barrier around door(s) he darts out of. Whatever kind of barrier you use, insist everyone makes sure he’s behind the barrier before going out the door or greeting a visitor.

4

Teach him to wait at doors. Implement a “say please” program where “sit” makes good things happen, including doors. Teach him to “sit and wait” at doors until he’s given the release.

5

Increase his exercise. If you keep your canine pal busy and tired, he’ll be less inclined to look for opportunities to dash through doors. A tired dog is a well-behaved dog.

pets of the week Katelyn is an 8-month-old female brindle with white plott hound/ pit bull terrier mix. She is a super sweet little girl who is absolutely adorable! She is friendly and outgoing and loves to play games and play with toys and run and romp and play some more … at only 8 months old she still has lots of puppy energy! Katelyn is very well mannered and she already knows the commands “sit” and “down,” and she is gentle when taking treats. Hazel is a 2-year-old female calico DSH. Hazel is a playful and outgoing little girl with gorgeous green eyes. She arrived at the shelter when her previous owners moved and didn’t take her with them. Luckily, Hazel gets along with other cats and her roommate made her feel welcome and helped her deal with the shock of being in the shelter. SIGNS OF ARTHRITIS IN CATS - The symptoms of arthritis will vary as to which joints are involved, the age of the cat and the severity of the disease. In general, the first symptoms may be an altered since the cat will try to put more of her weight on the unaffected limbs. There may be muscle atrophy (reduction in the size of the muscle) in the affected limb because the cat is using it less, or at least putting less weight on it. Many times the cat may find it difficult to get up after lying down and appears stiff. Cats with DJD may be unable to jump up onto a chair or windowsill. Many cats find it difficult to go up or down stairs. There may be changes in appetite and behavior (e.g., the cat may go off by herself more often). The joints are generally not swollen and the pain is the dull aching type, so cats do not often vocalize or cry out in pain. Some cats will lick or bite at the area that is painful. Some will seek out warmth or soft places to sleep. If you suspect arthritis in your cat, speak to your veterinarian. -www.peteducation.com

life after divorce

o you recently went through a divorce. Perhaps you are working through the heartache of being betrayed. Or maybe you are happy, thinking the world will be your “oyster” and you are looking forward to the carefree life of a single person (though as many singles will tell you, it’s way overrated). Many newly divorced people seem to think it’s time for partying seven days a week and Rachael Noble being free from DATING the responsibility of answering to another person. At some point, however, the reality of singleness ends up hitting them like a ton of bricks. No more help with the kids. No more partnership for life. No more help running last-minute errands because you’re running late. Now it’s about attending couples outings alone or with a new potential boyfriend that everyone is critiquing. Or you’re placed in the “divorced and single” category as if you have some sort of disease. Or people feel sorry for you because you are single, so you must not be happy. So once you find yourself in the place where singleness reality has hit, don’t panic. Here’s what you need to do: Keep expectations low. Many newly divorced people think they are going to quickly and magically find their new life partner and pick up where they left off. It takes time – sometimes years – to find what you are looking for. Many singles in this city have been in “the singles scene” for perhaps decades. It’s not impossible to find a new mate, but it certainly is challenging.

Times have changed since you met your ex. Each decade presents new challenges, so get ready. Consider waiting before jumping into a relationship. There’s nothing like dating someone who “thinks” they’re ready to date, and they’re not. A lot of heartache can be saved if you just take your time and don’t rush into anything. Don’t sit at home alone. Many singles realize they don’t belong in the couples’ scene anymore and don’t know what to do next. Check out singles events in your area and start making single friends! You’ll find you are not alone. There are many others like you and (unfortunately), many more like you are coming down the “pipeline.” Newly divorced person, I want you to know that everything will be OK. You WILL survive this and you CAN do this! Rachael Noble is a single Carmel resident and contributing columnist. She can be reached at nobleadvice@yahoo.com.

time with her high-maintenance husband. So I decided to test this theory. “Mary Ellen, this Saturday I’ll run all your errands for you as soon as I finish my errands. I’ll be home in just an hour and we can spend the rest of the afternoon together.” “Great! I need a present for a bridal shower. And you’ll also need to get pretty wrapping paper and a bow to go with it. And don’t try to squirm out of this. I know you’re on your way to buy a new lawn mower. Just stop at the gift store for me on the way back.” I could see it all now. I’m speeding

home that morning when I’m pulled over by the police... What’s that in the back seat, Mr. Wolfsie? Well, officer, I don’t want to brag, but it’s a 4.5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton. Wow, you are one lucky guy. I notice you also purchased a lovely chafing dish and some wedding shower paper color-coordinated with a pink bow. Back to reality, I said to my wife, “Look, Mary Ellen, if I do this for you, you have to run a few manly errands for me.” “Like what?” “Let’s see. How about picking up a bottle of Jack Daniels, a copy of Playboy

and a small handgun?” “Dick, this is silly. Whiskey makes you nauseous, Playboy depresses you, and you’re scared to death of firearms.” “Then how about a six-pack of Dr. Pepper and a copy of People magazine?” “Deal. But this is going to take several hours.” “Oh, take your time. I’m going to mow the lawn.” Dick Wolfsie is an author, columnist, and speaker. Contact him at wolfsie@aol.com.

I Dick Wolfsie knew she wouldn’t Humor do anything behind my back. Clearly someone had done something behind her back. Her hair was straighter and had some trendy color streaks throughout. “You were at the hairdresser since you left work at 6?” I asked, a bit incredulous. “Well, I wasn’t there the whole time, silly. I stopped to pick up a prescription at the drug store.” “You’re telling me that the reason you’re four hours late is that you also stopped at CVS?” “Well, the drive-thru was closed.” Unlike Mary Ellen, I approach errands with an organized vengeance. Here’s my list for last Saturday morning. As you will see, my wife was listless. That’s the difference. 1. Pick up dry cleaning 2. Buy new trashcan 3. Get oil change 4. Return DVD 5. Deposit check 6. Return Speedo swimsuit 7. Buy dog food I left the house at 9:30 and was home by noon. I would have been back sooner, but I had a breakfast meeting and stopped for an early lunch. When I do errands, I’m on a mission. Here was my wife’s “to do” list that same morning: 1. Return defective pantyhose 2. Get new pantyhose She also left the house at 9:30. At 4:30 in the afternoon, she called to say she’d be home by 5. “How can it take 6 hours to return pantyhose?” “I also had some books to take back to the library.” “Did you take them back to the Library of Congress?” For the entire 30 years of our marriage, Mary Ellen has run errands every Saturday. I wouldn’t say she’s gone a long time, but the WISH-TV employees’ manual would consider it a leave of absence. Maybe she’s just trying to avoid spending too much
