In the next few weeks, construction will begin on the Proscenium, which should be complete within 24 months. (Submitted rendering)
Construction to begin soon By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com It’s been a nearly a year since the official groundbreaking for The Proscenium, but very little has hapTHE PROSCENIUM pened on the site since then. That’s expected to soon change. Carmel Redevelopment Commission Executive Director Henry Mestetsky said in the next two weeks crews should begin grading and other preliminary work on the $60 million mixed-use development – which was originally announced in 2015 – on the northwest corner of Range Line Road and Carmel Drive. Mestetsky said utility relocation needed to occur before construction could begin. “The CRC and the developer, Anderson Birkla, agreed to terms over a year ago,” Mestetsky said. “The deal contemplated Duke Energy ordering and burying a major transmission line underground on the site, a complicated process that took some time.” Lew Middleton, a spokesperson for Duke
Energy, said the utility company has been on schedule. “Duke Energy believes it is completing its underground transmission line work on this project according to the agreed-upon schedule with the City of Carmel,” Middleton said, adding that delivery of the transmission cable is expected next week with installation beginning soon after. He also said Duke Energy gave approval to the developer in late 2017 to construct the first level of the concrete podium and indicated areas where initial site work could safely begin. The Proscenium, which will be built on the site of the former Party Time Rental and Arby’s restaurant, includes six buildings and a restaurant amenity with a natural green lawn, all built on top of an underground parking garage. “The Proscenium is a game-changer for our southern central core that will provide a perfect location for attracting corporate headquarters,” Mestetsky said. Construction is expected to take 18 to 24 months.
The Carmel Police Dept. responded to an armed robbery at 4:41 a.m. July 25 at the Speedway gas station, 10005 CRIME Michigan Rd. The two suspects are described as black males, and one was armed with a handgun, according to a press release by the CPD. Responding officers have been unable to locate the suspects, and the investigation is ongoing. If anyone has information regarding the case, contact the CPD at 317-571-2551.

BZA continues Lucas estate hearing By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Many Carmel residents filled the Board of Zoning Appeals meeting room for a hearing regarding the July 23 LuCITY NEWS cas Estate Appeal but left shortly thereafter because the topic wasn’t discussed. Although it was the first item on the docket, the BZA agreed to wait another month
before deciding on a solution between the city and the Lucas family. Last fall, the BZA denied a variance request filed by Lucas Oil Co. founder Forrest Lucas for events to be held at Lucas Estate, 1143 E. 116th St. The request was to allow semi-public events at the estate, such as weddings. Although the BZA denied the requests, the City of Carmel has continued to receive complaints from neighbors about parties at the estate.
John Molitor, the BZA’s legal counsel, told the BZA that the family requested a continuance to the hearing to solve the issue with the assistance of a mediator. Molitor asked the board to approve the continuance but to not wait longer than one month to do so. The board agreed to continue the hearing until its Aug. 27 meeting. For more, visit carmel.in.gov.

The Museum of Miniature Houses will celebrate its 25th anniversary in August by bringing an exhibit called “Tiny Treasures” to the Carmel Clay Public MINIATURES Library. “We’ve chosen 10 pieces from our collection to bring in,” said Caitlin Rogers, collection manager at the Museum of Miniature Houses. “The items will focus on children and literature. We’ll have a tiny vignette portraying Cinderella, a toy store with a bunch of different toys and a sweet shop. We want to get kids interested in miniature art and encourage reading.” Kids also will be able to participate in other events throughout August. “To tie in with the exhibit, we will be having some displays in the children’s department with books and DVDs,” said Dawn Boarman, CCPL children’s librarian. “We’ll also be having some scavenger hunts over the course of the month.” There will be an opportunity for kids to create their own miniature vignette. “We have little cut-out furniture pieces,” Rogers said. “The kids can glue them together and make a room box of their own.
A Cinderella miniature scene by Vivian Barnes. (Submitted photo)
We supplied them with the templates and the fabric to create these.” The museum looks forward to celebrating its silver anniversary with Carmel residents and CCPL. Boarman took her Girl Scout troop to visit the museum and knew other children would enjoy it. “My troop loved learning about it, exploring it and doing the scavenger hunts in the museum,” she said. “It’s a gem in the community.” The exhibit and subsequent events are free. Democrats hold event for three candidates By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com

The Hamilton County Democratic Central Committee held a fundraiser dinner July 21 featuring three candidates. POLITICS The event, called the 2018 Triple J Dinner, was at the American Legion in Carmel and featured candidates Joselyn Whitticker, John Aguilera and Jim Harper. Each candidate had a few minutes to present their platform. Whitticker, running for state auditor, said trust needs to be put back into government. “We are on fire because we bring something to the table,” she said. “You empower each other, and that empowerment comes because of who you are. I’m running because you know I’m the only African American you’re going to see on that ticket, and I’m the only female you’re going to see on that ticket.” Whitticker said everyone is important and deserves equal protection. “I think we need to be transparent,” she said. “We need to put the trust back in government. Right now, my democracy and your democracy is under attack.” Whitticker is a former Marion Common

Aguilera, who is running for state treasurer, said the local community will become better if quality Democrats are elected in November. “This is an opportunity I do not take lightly,” he said. “There hasn’t been a Democratic
treasurer elected in 39 years, and there hasn’t been a member of the Latino community ever elected.” Aguilera said he plans to invest in resources such as E911, which is support for wireless phone users who dial 911. “It expands the possibility of response in some of the most rural areas in the state,” he said. Aguilera formerly served as a state representative from East Chicago. For more on Aguilera’s campaign, visit John Aguilera for Indiana on Facebook. Harper was not present, so his deputy campaign manager Ali Brown presented on his behalf. Harper is running for secretary of state. “We are honest. We are going to tell you how we feel,” Brown said. “I can tell you right now, he’s mad. He’s mad that Connie Lawson, the current secretary of state, has not taken money from the federal government to secure our elections.” According to Brown’s presentation, Harper plans to end gerrymandering, increase voter accessibility, ensure election security and support small businesses if elected. The City of Indianapolis recently passed an ordinance to regulate shared motorized scooters that reTRANSPORTATION cently popped up around town, and Carmel may soon take a look at the issue, too. Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said the scooters are currently prohibited throughout town on city streets and the Monon Trail. “There’s a whole host of issues we’d need to work through. As of today, they would not be allowed,” Brainard said. “Some people like them, so we’re seeing whether or not there are good compromises available and looking at best practices from all over the country.” One of the issues is whether the city would require docking stations and where they are left when not in use. “It is also important to note that there is also the issue of blocking sidewalks, which would be a violation of the ADA if a person in a wheelchair could not get by,” said Dan McFeely, a spokesman for the City of Carmel. “Our current ordinance prohibits the

Roundabout project to begin By Viktoria Nasteva news@currentincarmel.com The City of Carmel is gearing up for the reconstruction of North Range Line Road from the 8th Street roundabout ROADS to Clay Terrace. Slated to run from Aug. 3 until November, the project will begin with modifications to the 8th St. roundabout that will allow it to better accommodate trucks and the new road structure, resulting in full closure until Aug. 14. During this time, Range Line Road will remain open only to southbound traffic, forcing northbound motorists to go east or west at 8th Street. Relocating utility lines, gaining right-of-
way from property owners and weather may cause delays, but contractors will be working 10-hour weekdays and 8-hour Saturdays to finish by November, said Dan McFeely of the Economic Development Dept. All businesses and the Hagan Burke Trail will remain open. Larry Johnson, the manager of Dairy Queen for 27 years, and Angela Bochan, the owner of Junqtique, a reclaimed furniture shop, are concerned about the financial hit they will take. According to them, the city will not provide assistance, such as rent reduction or advertising, during construction. The city communicates frequently with businesses, but their success will depend on the type of business, their marketing efforts and client base, McFeely said.

Budget cuts have limited PrimeLife Enrichment’s transportation service to primarily medical reasons. “We had funding cuts from SENIORS corporate sources we had relied on year after year,” PrimeLife Executive Director Sheri Oor said. “With the funding cuts, grocery trips were one of those things we determined we could no longer do, along with hair appointments, going to the bank or library or visiting an attorney.” The transportation cuts were effective July 16. Oor said PrimeLife will maintain transportation to physicians, physical therapy, dialysis, lab tests, rehab, prescription pick-ups and Roudabush VA Medical Center visits. “We’ll still bring clients for fitness at our center in Carmel,” Oor said. PrimeLife provides services throughout Hamilton County for people 50 and older. For those who are 60 and older, the trips are free, with occasional exceptions. For those who are 50 to 59, the trip fee varies between $5 to $8 per one-way trip. Oor said a list of grocery stores that deliver or would be ready for pick-up was CD:

Westfield resident Marilyn Frey, 74, was concerned about the news that grocery trips were discontinued. “I was devastated,” Frey said when she learned of the transportation cuts. Frey, who describes herself on a low fixed income, was able to get help by contacting the Central Indiana Council on Aging so she can get to grocery stores twice a month. Effective Aug. 1, PrimeLife will trim seven fitness classes to save some instructors’ fees.

The O’Connor House aims to break cycle of poverty for pregnant women By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com The O’Connor House has provided a home in Carmel for more than 225 single, pregnant, homeless women and their toddler children for nearly two decades. COVER STORY The nonprofit seeks to improve life for a segment of the area population its founders saw as underserved when it launched in 2005. “We were in a different home then,” co-founder Kris Bussick said. “We were there for about 5 1/2 years. During that time we learned a lot. It took us about two years to get started.” The current house was built specifically for the charity through a grant. “In 2010 we applied for a grant through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indiana for $500,000, so we were able to build this home specifically to our needs,” Bussick said. “One of the things we really wanted to have was a chapel in the home that we could call the anchor.” The facility can house up to eight women, plus two children per woman, at a time. “When a toddler is born while the mother is living here, that creates a generational change,” Bussick said. “It’s going to get the family out of poverty. It really helps the toddlers to be around the moms and volunteers. The kids that come here are loved on by all different people — moms, some men that volunteer and some students. They’re loved by so many people, so they tend to be very open to that and that’s different than those who haven’t had that experience.” The O’Connor House seeks to offer a hand-up rather than a handout. Women have weekly goals they are encouraged to meet. “They have at least three goals they’re working on, and they have to take steps toward their goal,” Bussick said. When women start working on their the goals, they can visit a donation closet and select needed items. “We don’t just give them things,” Bussick said. The O’Connor House also offers therapy and mentorship services to help break the cycle of poverty. “We have a counselor that meets with the women individually once a week, and they have a group counseling session once a week,” Bussick said. “A lot of these women haven’t had a parenting role model to grow up watching.” Women are allowed to stay 18 to 24 months and are assisted by the staff, volunteers and mentors during their stay. “We have over 180 volunteers. They do anything from offering support to babysitting to transportation, sorting donations and inputting info into our database,” Director Susan Barrett said. Kari Disney is a former resident. She found herself at The O’Connor House in 2009 with the help of an adoption agency.

“I knew absolutely no one there but the baby in my belly, myself and my 4-year-old at the time,” Disney said. “I was nervous, but they welcomed me. During that time I met a lot of people. I realized those people who I thought were going to judge me just wanted to love me and appreciate me. They showed me I was strong and that I could do anything I put my mind to. It was a great experience.” She credits the house with changing her life. “I like to thank my walk with God to The O’Connor House,” Disney said. “I had a lot of people who saw my potential and helped me. I didn’t see it in myself at the time. I had people who gave me time, attention and resources. I’m completely 180 from what I was when I first moved to the house. If it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be where I am today.” The O’Connor house is always looking for volunteers and accepts donations for the women and children. For more, visit theoconnorhouse.org.
GETTING ACCEPTED To be accepted to live at The O’Connor House, a woman: • Must be at least 18 years of age • Must be pregnant • Must not be fleeing any serious domestic violence situation • Must be drug- and alcohol-free • May have up to two additional children (4 years of age or younger) • Must agree to follow the rules, policies and procedures for living at The O’Connor House, which are discussed in the initial intake meeting

Back to nature Commentary by Terry Anker
Commentary by Danielle Wilson
Brooklyn-born songwriter Vic Mizzy turned his considerable talents from popular music in the 1940s and ‘50s to the emerging medium of television in the 1960s. Therein came some of his most memorable, if not significant, contributions, including the theme songs from “The Addams Family” and “Green Acres.” Thanks to long runs on the networks, followed by generations of re-runs and remakes, these simple tunes have earned a place in our collective memories. In “Green Acres,” Mizzy uses just 76 words to lay out the tension between Eddie Albert’s Oliver Wendell Douglas, New York power attorney who hopes to commune more directly with nature, and Eva Gabor’s Lisa, who exclaims, “New York is where I’d rather stay – I get allergic smelling hay.” Mizzy has outlined a central tenant of our evolving civilization: What is it to be a human in our natural state? While an increasing number of us today seek urban densities, a generation ago the trend was to flee these confines to more suburban locales. Even further back, we had a preference for the rural. Even in our vacations, we further confuse the question. Millions camp, sleeping under the open sky much as our ancestors did for centuries. Others travel great distances to enjoy luxuries. Yet, as our society continues to plod on, we hear echoes of our past. How do we reconcile our desire to contribute to Albert’s the chores and still enjoy Gabor’s the stores? Are we really getting back to nature if we are “glamping” in some Victorian safari tent? Is it a dodge or just a compromise to our conflicted selves?
By the time most of you are reading this, I will have essentially survived Summer 2018. Woo hoo! I return to the classroom Aug. 2, and while that means I HUMOR will soon be subjected to long days with other peoples’ sometimes smelly and usually angsty teenagers, it also means that in a few weeks, a beautiful yellow bus will come to collect my own precious angels. Can I get an amen? Don’t get me wrong. We’ve had a great summer here at chez Wilson. Quality relaxation time, some fantastic vacations and plenty of Netflix binges. But enough already. Enough of the sleeping ‘til noon or three. Enough of the basement Fortnite marathons. Enough of our college kid all up in my grill. I don’t know about your family, but mine functions more smoothly with schedules and routines and expectations of punctuality and productiveness. My pathetic attempt at a chore chart did not cut it. Bottom line? Everyone is fed up with everyone else. The girls have created a biochemical wasteland in their bathroom. The boys have nearly come to blows over the third car. My husband Doo insists that I complete a honey-do list a mile long because “I’m on vacation.” Yes, I’m on vacation, which by definition means “no work.” See what I mean? Even my partner-incrime is driving me bat-poo crazy. The only solution, my friends, is sweet academic imprisonment. We need places to be and things to do. We need homework and practices and bedtimes. We need our lives to return to normal. So though it may be blasphemous to say, I can’t wait for school to begin! Peace out.

READER’S VIEW Alzheimer’s issues must become national priority Editor, One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s disease. It is the costliest disease and the only leading cause of death in the U.S. that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. It is imperative that we have elected officials who are working to make Alzheimer’s a national priority. As an Alzheimer’s Association advocate, I took part in the annual Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C., where I joined more than 1,200 others from across the nation to discuss the staggering impact Alzheimer’s has on our state and the nation. I met with Sen. Joe Donnelly’s legislative assistant, with whom my fellow advocates and I shared our personal experience with this devastating disease. We asked for his support on two policies: The BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s
Act, which will provide resource centers, and PCHETA, assistance with training health care providers as well as additional Alzheimer’s research funding at the National Institutes of Health. We implored Sen. Donnelly to continue to be a champion in Congress for the 110,000 Hoosiers living with Alzheimer’s. My mother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 2016. The Alzheimer’s Association was a significant resource for my family as we served as caregivers for Mom and support for one another. We must slow this disease down and find a cure. My family and I are doing our part. Please join me in asking Sen. Donnelly for his continued support in the fight to end Alzheimer’s. Anita W. Gaillard, Carmel

My problems started after I disconnected my cable in the basement. I watch television downstairs while riding HUMOR my exercise bike, but if the plot gets exciting, I sometimes forget to pedal and by the time the show is over, I’ve only “traveled” about 28 feet — not even a first down. It was time to get rid of the distraction. When the cable company got my receiver box back in the mail, they thought I wanted to discontinue my entire service package, and the next day all my televisions displayed the message, CUSTOMER DISABLED, which is a very unfortunate way to phrase my predicament. To fix this problem, they needed to know all the numbers on the backs of all the cable boxes on all five TVs. I have a great photo of my wife scrunched behind our big-screen TV, nudged in between a giant fern and a china cabinet, trying to read the tiny numbers and talk on her cellphone at the same time. We were told by the customer service rep that the soonest they could come out to fix this was five days. No cable television for five days was scary. Mary Ellen and I love
each other; we just weren’t sure how we’d fill all that time. While on the phone with our cable rep, I asked if she had any suggestions to reduce my cable bill. This is not what she really said, but how it sounded to me: “If you switch to Direct TV, it will lower your bill, but it’s only a short-term promotional rate … or you can just stream your shows, but then you can’t use your DVR. Or you can buy an Apple TV box but you have to buy them for all the TVs, unless your TVs are smart … or you could subscribe to Hulu, or get a dish, assuming we can get service there. You could also watch TV over the internet, but you may not get any local stations without an antenna.” Finally, she told me: “We also have a website where you can diagnose your specific problem and find a solution all by yourself. “ By the way, I think that’s also the future of medicine.

Bier Brewery to move to Carmel By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Bier Brewery has been a staple on Indianapolis’ northeast side since November 2010, but in the fall the brewGROWTH ery will open a new Carmel taproom. Co-owner Jerry Connor said he’s worked on obtaining the location at 13720 N. Meridian St. for more than a year. “Why that space has been so intriguing to me was the parking availability and the exposure to (U.S.) 31 and the accessibility from just about anywhere on 136th Street and 146th Street,” said Connor, a Westfield resident. Connor said he wants to offer events that appeal to the nearby neighborhoods with the new taproom. “We like to do things in the parking lot to bring people together. That was extremely interesting to me,” he said. The 3,500-square-foot taproom will double the size of the brewery on 65th Street. Bier Brewery is working on partnering with Puccini’s and BoomBozz to offer carry-in options for food at the new taproom. “From that standpoint, the accessibility of having food there is always much greater

Connor said the location has the ability to offer guest taps if the brewery decides to do so. “We are trying to take the relaxed, eclectic atmosphere and comfortable atmosphere and duplicate that up there in Carmel,” Connor said. A portion of the walk-in cooler will be exposed and feature artistic designs created by the Bier Brewery’s graphic designer, Sarah Buschmann.

The Push Up Machine promotes a nocheat, full range of movement push-up using sliding handles that isolate the chest, shoulders, triceps and core. “I wanted to create Shade something whether you are a younger athlete or a beginner, something that would enable you to get into proper form and teach proper mechanics of the push-up,” Shade said. Blake’s Smiles supports autism causes By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Blake Dauby is an accomplished singer, a skilled musician and an avid creator of music videos. GIVING BACK In addition, he is a dancer, video editor and a gifted craftsman who loves nothing more than making people smile — literally — through his art. His signature items are handmade puzzle-piece smiles, forged in his pottery studio. He gifts them to anyone in need of a smile. “You keep it as long as you need it or pass it on to someone else who needs it,” said Dauby, a 20-year-old Carmel resident whose varied talents and eclectic tastes belie a lifelong condition that doesn’t deter him. Dauby has autism. “Blake has never let this disorder slow him down,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father. “He is very active in his community, school and various clubs. He has participated in show choir, orchestra, Best Buddies, student government, dance marathon and Carmel High School Television, just to name a few things.” Of all things, Blake is probably best known for his ceramics work, a skill he developed at Carmel High School — and one that led to his recent founding of Blake’s Smiles, a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds for groups that support autism causes. Blake, who has already donated $200

to charities by selling and auctioning his ceramic pieces, discovered his artistic gift after taking a ceramics class at Carmel High School, where he graduated in 2017. “We reluctantly signed him up thinking he might not make it past his first day,” Steve Dauby said. “Four years later, with the help of his special aides and patient art teacher Ms. (Sarah) Wolff, he has made incredible clay pieces and has been privileged to have several of his pieces exhibited in annual art fairs.” Buoyed by Blake’s affinity for ceramics, his parents, Steve and Barbara, set up a studio for him in the basement of the family home. There, he creates everything from vessel vases to pots to Sgraffito drape molds to, of course, smiles. “(I) took an art class in high school and made some cool stuff,” Blake said. “(I enjoy) shaping stuff, bowls and cups, on the wheel.” Besides creating ceramic art, Blake also paints, plays guitar, violin and piano and sings the national anthem at CHS basketball and lacrosse games and at autism events. He also works 12 to 15 hours per week at Walgreens on Michigan Road and dedicates time to establishing Blake’s Smiles, which derives its name from his early childhood habit of asking people who weren’t smiling the same question: “Is it fun?” “Since the early age of 3, Blake has been

a visual learner and struggled socially,” Steve said. “He would famously ask anyone he would see without a smile on their face, ‘Is it fun?’ Most people had no clue what or why he was asking this, but it was his way to calm himself that everything was OK if people did not have a smile on their face.” On Aug. 3, Blake will participate in the DOZ Charitable Foundation’s outreach program, which in the past five years has donated more than $100,000 to local charities. Dauby O’Connor & Zaleski is an accounting firm in Carmel, where Steve Dauby is a partner. During the program, part of a DOZ recruiting event for accounting students, Blake will speak about and share his art pieces. Everyone will literally leave with a smile. “The students will actually go home with one that Blake has already made,” said Nicole Wright, assistant controller for DOZ. “They can take them back with them and share the smiles.” Dealing with sensory issues Diagnosed with autism as a young child, Blake Dauby — and his family — endured many of the trials and tribulations associated with the disorder. “Like most kids on the autism spectrum, growing up Blake had numerous sensory issues,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father. “Many of these issues can be crippling and alter not only the child but loved ones and care givers. Most refer to the child as being on sensory overload. One of Blake’s many sensory issues was smell and taste. He would not allow his hands, face or lips to touch anything with an odor, different smell or wasn’t clear in appearance.” In time, Blake became involved in multiple activities, including music, clubs, student government and art. He looks forward to a future that includes his job at Walgreens, making and editing music videos, overseeing his nonprofit Blake’s Smiles and refining his art. Oh, and one other thing. “Having fun,” said Blake, who has three sisters Stephanie, Amanda and Samantha, and a brother, Matt. His mother is Barbara Dauby.

Artists feature landscapes By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Randall Scott Harden draws on his travels for a variety of landscapes. The longtime Noblesville PAINTING resident specializes in oil paintings of landscapes in the United States and Europe. “I’ve been painting about 40 years, fulltime for about 20 years,” Harden said. Harden, 52, and Carol Wagner, a Carmel resident, will hold a meet-the-artists session at Art on Main, 111 W. Main St., Suite 140, Carmel, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 2. Light refreshments will be served. Harden and Wagner are the gallery’s featured artists for August. “We’ll talk about travels and voyages all over the world,” said Harden, who has been associated with Art on Main since it opened in September 2017. “We’ll have paintings from the Midwest and wine country. I’ll have about 20 pieces up and Carol will have 10 to 15.” Harden, who has a home studio in Noblesville, also has his work displayed in a gallery in Fort Wayne. Wagner is retiring from the gallery after this month.

“I’ll still be painting but more or less for pleasure,” said Wagner, who has been painting with oils for 10 years. Wagner’s specialty is still life paintings, but this show will feature landscapes. “Mine are primarily around water. That will be the big difference in this show (from Harden’s paintings),” Wagner said. “The paintings are either from my travels or my friends’ travels. I really love rivers, and probably three or four of my pictures are rivers and streams.”

Pianist Lorie Line to perform By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Pianist Lorie Line prides herself on a strong ear. That comes in handy on CONCERT the concert stage. “I’m most known for doing a medley of requests,” Line said. “People shout out requests and I write it down. Then I play about 15 minutes of all 20 to 25 songs that people love. It’s all off-the-cuff by ear. It’s something I’m known for doing.” Line will perform at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Her tour is called “The Lorie Line Simply Grand Solo Piano Tour.” “When I do the holiday tour, I bring a pop chamber orchestra and a special featured vocalist,” Line said. “When I do this tour, this is for diehard fans that really just love me. They love it because there is nobody else on the stage, it’s just me.” Line performs 90 minutes with no intermission. Traditionally, Line said she comes to the Indianapolis area for her holiday show. She had been doing the holiday show for 29 years. Line has a vast catalog to draw from. She

It’s called ‘No Worries,’ and it’s going to be coming out in August, so I’m going to be playing brand new songs. It’s a pop project, and I haven’t done a pop project in about 10 years. It’s all the crazy stuff that’s (been) really popular the last 10 years, everything from Sam Smith to Ed Sheeran to Adele to even some fun things like ‘Game of Thrones.’” Tickets are $57. Blueprint for Improvement: Family basement in West Carmel Commentary by Larry Greene
AFTER SOLUTIONS
After
Before
The goal was to better utilize all the space in the basement to create a comfortable area for the family to unwind and relax. 1. The first major change came from finishing the entire basement and dividing it into several rooms – a living space, a bedroom and a home gym. 2. Additionally, new luxury vinyl tile flooring was added to the space. This is a perfect flooring option for any basement because of its durability. 3. A wet bar was created in the living space, making it a great area to entertain and host guests. 4. Also, a projector and projection screen were added in the living space, creating a comfortable home theater. 5. A large barn door was added dividing the living space from the home gym, making both rooms feel more open while also adding a decorative element.
Background info: This early 2000s home in the Aberdeen neighborhood of West Carmel belongs to a young family. Overall, the home functioned perfectly for the family but lacked a recreational space for the homeowners and their children to workout, watch movies and entertain guests.
BEFORE PROBLEMS The original basement was only partially finished, so there was plenty of square footage that was not being used. The finished side of the basement lacked design elements that would make it a more comfortable and functional space for the entire family.

Harod Spring in northern Israel. (Photo by Don Knebel)
Harod Spring’s drinking test Commentary by Don Knebel Harod Spring lies at the foot of Mount Gilboa, about 15 miles south of Nazareth in northern Israel. The victorious TRAVEL soldiers for a decisive Biblical battle in the nearby Jezreel Valley were chosen by how they drank from the spring. According to the Book of Judges, nomadic Midianites from the east had repeatedly invaded Israel on camels, killing Israelites and stealing their crops and animals. On one occasion, a large contingent of Midianites was encamped in the Jezreel Valley, preparing for another raid. Gideon, a local leader, assembled 32,000 men at the base of Mount Gilboa, planning a direct attack. God appeared to Gideon, telling him to send home 22,000 men who were afraid to fight the better equipped and more numerous Midianites. God then told Gideon to observe the remaining troops as they drank from Harod Spring, which flows from Mount Gilboa through a cavern opening. Three hundred of Gideon’s men, apparently prone, lapped water from the spring like dogs, using their
cupped hands. The rest of the 10,000 men knelt to drink. At God’s instruction, Gideon sent the kneelers back to their homes and trained the lappers for a daring raid on the Midianites. One night, the 300 raiders, divided into groups of 100, surrounded and then entered the Midianite camp, carrying torches and blowing horns. The startled Midianites scurried from their camp in all directions, killing each other in the ensuing melee. The men Gideon had sent home, joined by other Israelites, eventually annihilated the lost and widely dispersed Midianites. Gideon himself killed two captured Midianite kings whose earlier victims had included his brothers. Today, Harod Spring is within Ma’ayan Harod National Park. A park sign tells about Gideon’s famous drinking test, but a fence in front of the cavern opening prevents visitors from trying out alternative techniques. Don Knebel is a local resident who works for Barnes & Thornburg LLP. For the full column visit donknebel.com. You may contact him at news@currentzionsville. com.
Hiding valuables — The most common places thieves look for hidden valuables are dresser drawers, nightstands and medicine cabinets. They rarely look in kids’ rooms, so valuables can be hidden there. Also, a good place to store emergency cash is inside a photo album. No thief is going to take time to peruse your family albums. Source: FamilyHandyman.com
Cutting mangoes — Mangoes can be a pesky fruit to prep but there’s a speedy way to do it without fuss or waste. Cut the mango in half (on each side of the stone), slice grids into each half then invert the fruit. Mango cubes pop up and can then be sliced off. Source: MSN.com
