Lucas Estate owner defends, continues hosting large parties By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com More than a year after Lucas Estate filed several variance requests to be permitted to use the 70-acre property at 1143 UPDATE W. 116th St. as a meeting or party venue, the Lucas family plans to continue hosting events there that they believe have always been permissible — without a variance. The Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals was set to discuss the matter at its Aug. 27 meeting, but it was pulled from the agenda after Michael Hollibaugh, director of Carmel’s Dept. of Community Services, withdrew a determination letter he wrote to Lucas Estate attorneys in November 2017 outlining restrictions on short-term outdoor special events. Lucas Estate officials had appealed the determination letter, which they believed unfairly singled them out. Hollibaugh stated in an Aug. 22 letter to Lucas Estate attorneys that he was withdrawing the determination letter after attempting mediation. “Throughout the appeal, the City of Carmel attempted to negotiate a settlement agreement with your client,” Hollibaugh stated. “Unfortunately, even after formalized mediation efforts, any attempt to achieve a reasonable resolution failed. Therefore, it now seems prudent to withdraw my Determination and allow the BZA Order to stand on its own merits, without any attempt at further clarification or interpretation by me.” Michael Wukmer, an attorney representing Lucas Estate, said the BZA order has no impact on events at the Lucas Estate because they don’t violate any city ordinances. He said the Lucas family only applied for the variances in April 2017 at the repeated request of the City of Carmel and that they have never been ordered to halt operations. In a statement issued Aug. 27, Lucas Estate owner Forrest Lucas described why he believes events on the property do not violate city code. “Some have asserted that we are a commercial business Lucas because many of our events are catered or offer valet services for their guests, but these activities are common with larger estates or functions and is not prohibited by the zoning laws,” he stated. “The fact that we have a larger piece of property and can invite more guests does not change the

fundamental nature of our events or convert our activities to commercial activities. It does not make our private events into a commercial business.” In September 2017, the BZA narrowly voted against the variance requests, with many west Carmel residents speaking against the parties at the estate because of noise, traffic and other issues. Lucas stated that some of the protests are believed to “be political in nature” and that many remonstrators are not immediate neighbors of the property. “Legally, (the BZA vote) did not change anything,” Lucas stated. “What we were legally doing before the denial we could continue.” In the August letter, Hollibaugh states that failure to comply with the BZA order may result in the city “pursuing enforcement” against Lucas Estate. Dan McFeely, a spokesperson for the City of Carmel, declined to discuss specifics regarding the situation, describing it as a “matter of litigation.” “Neighbors to the estate still have a grave concern about noise, traffic and what they believe is business use of a residential property,” he stated in an email. “Any action to enforce that BZA order by the city will potentially result in litigation. Despite this, both parties continue to discuss a potential resolution. To guarantee the integrity of these discussions, the city has no further comment at this time.” Lucas stated that the estate never had received a citation for violating city code since it began operating in 2011 except for a recent noise ordinance complaint that he is challenging. The estate has put in directional lighting and sound systems, buffering and sound monitoring to ensure all events comply with the city’s noise ordinance. “We have met many times with the neighbors and believe that we have satisfied all but a few protestors,” Lucas stated. “We are not trying to minimize their opinions. We will continue to be sensitive to our neighbors and their legitimate concerns.”

Board president faces challenger By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel Clay Schools board of trustees President Layla Spanenberg is facing a challenger for the District SCHOOL BOARD 1 seat in the Nov. 6 election. Sara Elitriby, a stayat-home mom with three children in CCS, decided to run for the school board shortly before the filing deadline at noon Aug. 24 when she saw that Elitriby Spanenberg was still unopposed. Her family moved to Carmel seven years ago after buying a house as close as they could to Cherry Tree Elementary to avoid redistricting. All three of her children Spanenberg have been part of the CCS high-ability program, and the district’s handling of plans to revamp the program and subsequent reversal earlier this year led her to seek office. “(School board members) are a voice for the people, and I don’t know that that was really the case this past year. It was more smoke and mirrors and curtains where there was not a lot of transparency,” she said. “I want change, and I have to put my money where my mouth is so to speak to be the change that I want to see.” Spanenberg, who was first elected in 2010, said her desire to serve on the school board has only grown as she’s watched her children make their way through CCS. Her oldest child graduated in the spring and

she has two others attending Carmel High School. She believes Carmel voters are especially tuned in to the school board races, as the proposed changes to the high-ability programming and resignation of the superintendent in the past year engaged many people who may have not otherwise been paying close attention, she said. “I don’t know if the average citizen was aware that the school board was responsible for hiring and firing and sometimes releasing the superintendent,” Spanenberg said. “When a majority of the board does not support a current superintendent, we seek other avenues. That’s what we did last year.” With a new superintendent in place, Spanenberg said she hopes to continue working on the “amazing things” happening in Carmel. “I feel like I’m the right person to work with our team of board members to help make that happen,” she said. “My passion and desire to advocate for all students has definitely not changed.”

ON THE BALLOT Filing for the school board race ended at noon Aug. 24. Candidates are: District 1 • Sara Elitriby • Layla N. Spanenberg (incumbent) District 2 • Pamela S. Knowles (incumbent) • Venkata NK Tadikonda District 3 • Cinnamon Bell-Williams • Mike Kerschner (incumbent) • Eric Morris

Ride to benefit MS research By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Mingzhou Nie is an avid runner who took up bicycling two months ago to benefit a good cause. FUNDRAISER A Carmel resident, Nie is one of 300 area cyclists who will ride in the Sept. 8 “Bike MS: Cruisin’ the Crossroads” national fundraiser for people affected by multiple sclerosis. Presented locally by Salesforce, “Cruisin’ the Crossroads” is one of 80 rides across the U.S. hosted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Nie, part of the Salesforce Corporate Team, is among 80,000-plus riders participating in the national event. He has already secured more than $1,000 in pledges. The local ride has a collective goal of $125,000. “I have a bunch of friends who are passionate about helping others and are excited about cycling,” said Nie, who has a friend and neighbor who suffers from MS, a disabling disease of the central nervous system. A member of the Carmel Runners Club, Nie, 46, took up running in 2015 and regularly participates in weekend runs with the group. For the MS ride, he created a cross-

New CCS superintendent’s mantra aims to unite district after difficult year By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com

MEET MICHAEL BERESFORD

It wasn’t difficult for Michael Beresford to come up with a theme for the 2018-19 school year. “Together We’re Better” is his mantra COVER STORY for his first year as superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools. It’s a message he believes students, teachers and the community atlarge need to hear and take to heart after a school year of turmoil. “I just got the impression that we really need to pull our team together, because if we do that, we’re better,” Beresford said. “There are a lot of songs about being better together, and I didn’t want it to sound like a Carpenters song from the ’70s, but it just kind of came clear like it does every year.” Beresford, 58, who served as an assistant superintendent at Hamilton Southeastern Schools prior to taking the top role at CCS, has already become known around Carmel for fist-bump greetings and his relaxed demeanor. The Fishers resident shared his thoughts on his new role and several controversial issues that arose during the last school year.

EARNING TRUST

Beresford’s first day with CCS was July 1, five months after the resignation of his predecessor, Nicholas Wahl, but only one day after Wahl stopped receiving his salary and partial benefits. The school board placed Wahl and former human resources director Corrine Middleton on administrative leave in October 2017 to conduct a review of district leadership. School officials remained tight-lipped on what they called a personnel decision, but many speculated they were involved in a romantic relationship. The school board passed a non-fraternization policy establishing boundaries for employees in personal relationships in March. Beresford consistently has declined to comment on the circumstances that led to the top job becoming available at CCS and said he’d be working to build rapport as a new superintendent no matter the situation. “I’d have to earn my trust if nothing had happened,” he said. “If you had a 25-year veteran (I’d replaced) with names all over buildings and benches all over the district, I’d still come in with, ‘Who’s the new guy? What’s he all about?’” Before Beresford arrived, CCS Associate Supt. for Business Affairs Roger McMichael and Assistant Supt. of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Amy Dudley served as co-interim superintendents in addition to their regular duties. With everyone back in their normal roles, Beresford expects the “bumpy ride” of the 2017-18 school year to naturally smooth out. “Whenever you take people who have full-time jobs and

on top of that are serving as co-interim superintendents, that’s a lot of work. I’ve been in that position when we’ve had interim superintendents. It adds a level of stress to the system,” he said. “Let’s calm everything down, let’s get our processes back in place, let’s get the stakeholders involved and let’s take a good look and try to balance out the best way moving forward.”

TRANSPARENCY

Throughout the previous school year, several issues led some CCS parents and other stakeholders to accuse CCS of lacking transparency. Beresford said his philosophy is to offer as much information as he can without violating privacy laws. “There’s been a trend in schools to just put out a lot of what I would call meaningless information,” he said. “There’s such a lack of detail it just makes parents’ eyes roll, so I try to be as forthcoming as possible.” He said he’s had many tough conversations where he’s had to relay news that parents didn’t want to hear but that they often thank him for being straightforward. “The more communication you put out, the less anger you have about the process,” he said. “A lot of times people are more upset about the process than they are the actual outcome.”

Favorite pastime: Hiking and biking. Also enjoys music, especially acoustic guitar Favorite local restaurant: Woody’s Library Restaurant, of course, as a former English/journalism teacher Favorite color: Carmel blue and gold Birthplace: Danville, Ill. (home of Dick Van Dyke) Favorite vacation location: Anywhere there are trails and breathtaking scenery and adventure Family: Wife, Lori, and kids, Katie, Keagan and Collin Most DVR’d TV show: College football Favorite subject in school: English Motto to live by: “Do not think that love in order to be genuine has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired. Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.” – Mother Teresa

HIGH-ABILITY PROGRAM

In March, CCS announced a plan to place students in the high-ability Challenge program in classrooms with general education students as part of a two-year comprehensive review of elementary programming. The decision didn’t sit well with many parents of highability students, who openly criticized the plan. A month later, the district put all changes to the Challenge program on hold. Beresford said he plans to make a decision on changes to the high-ability program and other issues that affect elementary students — such as school start times — this year. But first he wants to gather feedback from anyone who’d like to offer it. “One of the complaints I’ve heard in a couple instances is (parents) felt that they didn’t have time or the opportunity to give their input before a decision was proposed,” Beresford said. “That’s something we can do better.”

CLOSING ORCHARD PARK

Another issue that troubled many families was the decision to close Orchard Park Elementary and build a new elementary school 5 miles away. The school board voted 4-1 Continued on Page 15

COMMUNITY Continued from Page 14 to approve the plan less than a week before Beresford’s first day with CCS. Although he was not part of the discussion, Beresford said he understands why it was such a heart-wrenching decision. “Orchard Park has been a real gem of the district, so people should be sad,” he said. “It’s a special place, but at the same time we have a responsibility to give a 21st-century education to everybody in the district.” Beresford said he’s focused on ensuring the new school and rebuilt Carmel Elementary School are “inspiring educational facilities” and that the transition for students into new campuses goes smoothly.

SCHOOL SAFETY

One of Beresford’s first focus areas is

Current in Carmel

school safety, a topic brought to the forefront in Hamilton County after a shooting in May at Noblesville West Middle School. Beresford praised the protocols already in place at CCS and said he’s working to build consistency across the district. Planned upgrades include changes to school entryways and a two-way communication program for leaving anonymous tips. CCS has acquired 30 metal-detecting wands through a state program offering them for free, but Beresford said the district will take its time in implementing procedures for using them to make sure it’s done right. “There’s a tendency when something happens to do something fast and visible,” he said. “We’re not going to do that. We’re going to be very methodical and work best practices in school safety.”

FIRST IMPRESSIONS “As a board we have been very highly focused on the safety of our students. When we sought to hire a superintendent there was very specific criteria we were seeking. We couldn’t be more excited to be working with our new superintendent. His depth and breadth of knowledge in safety and his collaborate leadership style can’t be disputed.” –Layla Spanenberg, school board president “(Dr. Beresford) is very genuine and insightful, and he really understands the loss of Orchard Park Elementary school and the positive impact that school and the educators have made for those students and the community as a whole. He understands all of the factors and implications in this school closing. I have no doubt he will strive to ensure the best holistic education for those students and be mindful of the needs of the community as well.” –Shelly Wood, Orchard Park Presbyterian Church senior pastor and mother of three children in CCS “It is exciting to be working with Dr. Beresford. He has demonstrated a willingness to listen and cooperate with teachers. He is quickly building trust with all stakeholders in the district. It is evident that we are continuing to build upon the foundation of cooperation and trust created last year.” –Pete O’Hara, Carmel Teachers’ Association president and Carmel High School teacher

“From our conversation, I felt that Dr. Beresford cares about involving high-ability students’ parents in decision-making that affects high-ability and gifted programing, and I hope that this will translate into preserving high-ability classrooms for elementary school students who require those environments to reach their academic potential.” –Jennifer Zivoin, parent of a high-ability student at Forest Dale Elementary

Fantasy showdown

O B S E R V AT I O N Wise old birds Commentary by Terry Anker

Commentary by Danielle Wilson

Among scores of both legitimate and suspect lines, we divide ourselves by race, gender, religion and age. Even more, we are segregated by others — marketing firms, corporations, institutions, politicians and governments — masterful in making us aware, if not obsessed with, our various forms and flavors. So, as we march into a new dawn of interest groups and identity politics, where is the guidebook that will help us know the difference between a sparrow and a swallow? Alas, the notion of human variability is a bit more contested. Lines blur and various constituencies are locked in battle as to which can claim each of the contested subgroups as their own. Labels fly. Aspersions are cast. Still, most of us struggle to rise above the chatter hoping to make sense of it all. Our children stay children much longer than in generations past. Still, they behave more like adults. Working, or not, fails to correspond with possessions. Maturity, or not, fails to correspond with procreation. Intelligence and diligence, or not, fail to correspond with expectation. Have we lost sight of what it means to be an adult? Or, is the onset simply delayed a bit? Yet, even if we can attempt an answer here, do we expect to cherry pick the good and leave behind the bad? The young (or youngish) are not to blame alone. Verified chronological adults abandon their families to “find themselves.” And maturity only loosely corresponds to age. Without the onset of responsibility, can adulthood ever be achieved? Perhaps, we’ll know when we’re older.

As you may recall from last week’s column, my dance mom days are over, or at least on pause. My youngest decided to take a break from competitive HUMOR dance and has left me without an expensive, all-consuming role to fill. I still have another daughter in color guard, but she can drive and so can her friends, reducing me to the occasional French-braider or post-practice DQ financier. Therefore, since work, four teenagers, a bald husband, a perpetually messy kitchen, the dog and the cat are clearly not enough to keep me busy, I am pledging my newly acquired free time to fantasy football domination. That’s right, men of Midnight Madness, you are officially on notice! This will be my fourth season as the sole woman in an all-male league. My “Game of Thrones” shout-out team, “The Girl Has No Name,” has slowly but surely been rising in the ranks and is poised to break into the top four come playoffs. And now that I can completely devote my substantial and uniquely maternal skills to each weekly matchup, I’m confident I will reign supreme. I am, after all, a veteran dance mom. I can easily pinpoint true competition amid a multitude of posers, discern between real injuries and carefully crafted drama, and recognize when the best course of action is simply to walk away from the emotional child in the dressing room. Translation? I know whom to start, whom to bench, and whom to trade (and when to use whom versus who!). Rest assured, I will keep you posted. My fantasy football travails may not be dance theater, but they should prove entertaining. Peace out.

For 18 years, Beth Jenneman worked as the Carmel Clay Public Library’s marketing and public relations manNOW OPEN ager. It was there that she met Krista Arland, who worked for the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation. “We quickly bonded over our shared love of dogs and desire to have our own businesses,” Jenneman said. “We planned to someday own an animal-related business together.” Shortly thereafter, Jenneman became a Certified Professional Groomer and took the plunge into entrepreneurship, launching a mobile pet grooming business called Wags to Whiskers. “After I started Wags to Whiskers, it only took us a couple of weeks to realize that someday was now, and Krista became coowner,” Jenneman said. Wags to Whiskers opened in May. The business travels to clients and grooms pets in a self-contained mobile van. The van features a hydraulic grooming table, bathing tub and heating and cooling system.

“We have quite a few clients with elderly, anxious or disabled pets that don’t do well being away from home for hours around a lot of other animals that they don’t know,” Jenneman said. “The van is quiet. We focus on just that pet for the duration of the time they are in our care.” Above all, Arland said Wags to Whiskers is a business focused on the joy of working with animals. “I am a breast cancer survivor and I wanted to work in an environment that was both mentally and physically healthy for me,” she said. “I truly love getting up every day to go to work.”

Miller celebrates 50 years

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com

Miller Auto Care began in a Union 76 gas station with two bays on Range Line Road in 1968. During the ANNIVERSARY past 50 years, the business has relocated once and changed owners. Owner Keith Stockberger began working at the business in 1983. He knew the original owner, Amos Miller, because they attended the same church. “I remembered he was an elder in our church, so when I got out in my career I came here in ’83,” Stockberger said. “In 1986, (my wife) Debbie and I purchased Miller Auto Care.” In 1970, Miller Auto Care moved from the gas station into the brick building it is in today at 434 S. Range Line Rd. Miller moved the business because of his faith. “What happened was in the ‘60s, nobody was open on Sundays,” Stockberger said. “There was not a lot of restaurants and stuff, so Union 76 came in and told him he had to be open on Sunday. Amos (who died in 2015) being a person who worshipped on Sundays said no and had this building built because he said he wasn’t going to be open on Sunday.”

Keith and Debbie Stockberger pause near Miller Auto Care. (Submitted photo)

Today, Miller Auto Care is still closed on Sundays. In 1990, the Stockbergers purchased an acre to the north of the building and expanded it to 12 bays and added a new office. The Stockbergers have transformed Miller Auto Care into a family business. All four of the Stockbergers’ daughters have worked at Miller Auto Care. Some still are employed there. For the 50th anniversary, the couple added signage but isn’t planning a large celebration event.

Joe Schwarz earned the nickname of Fightin’ Joe for his determination through life. IU HEALTH NORTH Schwarz moved with his family from Argentina when he was a youngster in New York City’s Spanish Harlem. He shined shoes, worked in grocery stores and delivered newspapers to help his poor family. Schwarz moved to Indianapolis in the 1960s and became a wealthy hotel and apartment developer, owning the Marriott on the east side of Indianapolis. “He used to describe himself by saying, ‘Not too bad for shoeshine boy,’” said Scott Davison, IU Health board of directors chair. After successfully battling prostate cancer, Schwarz was diagnosed with throat cancer. It was treated, but the throat cancer returned and he succumbed to the battle in March at age 75. To honor his memory, his wife, Shelly Schwarz, who now lives in Longboat Key, Fla., donated $10 million to IU Health North in Carmel to help with the hospital’s new cancer center, which was named the Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center at a groundbreaking announcement

The Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center is expected to open in 2020. (Submitted image)

Aug. 23 on hospital grounds. In a video, Shelly said Joe always said he made his money in Indiana so he “wanted to pay it forward to the people in Indiana.” Davison described it as a truly transformational gift to support the center’s construction and programs and said it’s the largest philanthropic gift ever to IU Health by a living donor. Davison, a Zionsville resident, said it will change the delivery of cancer care in Carmel, other northern suburbs and well beyond. The $55 million investment will be an 88,000-square-foot, two-story facility on the south side of the IU North campus. “This gift will allow IU Health to offer new and expansive programs at the North cancer center that would not be possible otherwise,” Davison said.

Connor Prairie features ‘Black Pioneers’

Dancing with Our Stars to raise money for Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County

editorial@youarecurrent.com

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Julie Booth knows she will have mixed emotions when Dancing with Our Stars arrives. “I am both looking forward and nervous for FUNDRAISER it,” Booth said. “I absolutely love to dance but I know once I am out there with all the eyes watching, my adrenaline and nerves will kick in. I tend to put high expectations on myself and want so badly to do well that it overpowers my ability to relax and have fun. I want to have the mindset of just have fun with it and enjoy the experience and learn from it.” Booth will participate in Dancing with Our Stars from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 6 at Embassy Suites by Hilton in Noblesville. St. Vincent is the presenting sponsor for the event, which benefits Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County. Among the participants are Zionsville resident Kristi Lee, cohost of “The Bob & Tom Show,” and Chris Jensen, Noblesville Common Council member who is running for mayor in 2019. Booth, an owner and managing director of aFit, which is focused on providing information technology, said dance instructor Rob Jenkins has worked with her to incorporate a statement about the evolution of women from mostly being worker bees in the ‘80s to being in leadership positions and owning businesses. “Being someone who has often been the only, or one of very few, women in a room full of men ever since my engineering degree at Purdue to owning my own business, it makes this especially personal to me,” Booth said. “We have come a long way yet still have more to do.” Booth eagerly accepted the challenge to participate. “When I was asked, I thought, ‘Wait, I can help a worthy cause and dance at the same time? I am so in,’” she said. “I love to help others. My mom used to volunteer for Meals on Wheels many years ago. Knowing I am helping people is a big deal. And I just love to dance, so it is the perfect combination.” Booth has danced routines in front of small audiences in Darren’s Ballroom showcases and ballroom competitions. “No one watches ballroom competitions. I do them to challenge myself. And showcases have a very small audience and are not competitive at all,” she said. “So, the amount of people at this venue, having it be a DWOS format, and that I learned a brand new difficult dance in a short amount of time, all makes this much harder than anything I have done before.” Riverview Health Chief Financial Officer Brenda Baker, a Noblesville resident, has attended the event the last couple of years. “It will be great to be a part of it,” Baker Baker said. “I am just a little nervous about the performance. (Dance instructor) Suresh (Nair) is amazing, and I know that he will help me through it.”

Dance instructor Rob Jenkins with Julie Booth have been rehearsing since June. (Submitted photo)

Baker served on the board of Meals on Wheels for seven years. “It is an amazing organization that fills a need in our community,” Baker said. “I also occasionally deliver meals and have seen firsthand the impact that Meals on Wheels has on the individual clients.” Derek Burton, a Fishers resident and Meadow Brook director of community relations, is eager to participate. “I was nervous in the beginning, but my partner has helped me get past that feeling,” Burton said. “I am all about trying new things.” Burton Mike Wickham, a loan consultant for Caliber Home Loans, said he is fortunate to help a good cause while having fun. “I am very much looking forward to this event to help the cause for Meals on Wheels along with having some video footage of me dancing for my 4-year-old twin boys to get a good laugh,” said Wickham, who has been a spectator at the Wickham event for a few years. Denise Abshire is another participant from McCordsville. Other dancers from Carmel are Michael Rothenberger and Anne White. Other participants are Tom Ferrara, Fishers, and Indianapolis residents Dani Aleksa and Beth Cook. For more, visit mealsonwheelshc.org/dancing-with-our-stars-2018.

A short play, “Black Pioneers: Roberts Settlement,” along with a supplementary exhibition and live interpretation, will be featured at Conner Prairie in Fishers on Saturdays in September. Visitors can hear the story of free people of color who immigrated to Hamilton County from North Carolina in the 1830s. The pioneers bought land from the federal government and established a thriving settlement among Quaker neighbors. The play is for ages 8 and up and set for Sept. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 inside of Prairietown. Shows are at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Visitors will be able to interact with exhibit elements, including a video with historic images from Roberts Settlement families, interspersed with images from current Roberts Settlement descendants. Visitors also will be able to talk with an interpreter about the Roberts Settlement history and explore maps, timelines and historical papers to learn about the experience of free people of color moving west in the early 19th century. Tyszka makes Indiana debut By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com As the mother of two children younger than 2 years old, Brynn Tyszka had to take time off THEATER from the stage after moving to Carmel from Rochester, N.Y. in 2016. “I’ve been craving it,” Tyszka said. Tyszka is making her Tyszka Indiana debut in the Actors Theatre of Indiana’s “A Comedy of Tenors” Sept. 7 to 30 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Tyszka was directing, choreographing, teaching and acting in Rochester. “Farce is one of my favorite forms because I’m a naturally fast person,” she said. “I love physical comedy. I like the challenge of making exaggerated characters real. In theater, we only tell stories of best and worst days. Farce is that on crack. It’s the best and worst day for people that are highly dramatic.” Tyszka is excited about her character’s Russian accent.

“I love accents, and I have not done this one yet,” Tyszka said. This is the Indiana premiere of the play. Darrin Murrell, from Parker City, directed ATI’s last farce, “Unnecessary Farce,” in 2016. “I’m always drawn to farce and comedy,” Murrell said. “I’ve had a long connection with ‘Lend Me A Tenor,’ which this play is a sequel to it.” Murrell Murrell said he worked with the playwright of both plays, Ken Ludwig, in Chicago in the early 1990s. He also had good friends who were involved in the world premiere of “A Comedy of Tenors” in Cleveland in 2015. Murrell said he is fortunate to have an amazing cast that will carry the production. Westfield resident Don Farrell, one of ATI’s three co-founders, has a dual role of Tito and his doppelganger Beppo. Farrell said it’s a great way to start ATI’s 14th season. “You can lose yourself for two hours in hysteria,” Farrell said.

CCA Gallery to celebrate 40 years By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Westfield artist Elaine Wolfe takes great pride in her long association with the Center for Creative Art Gallery. ART “For any business to last 40 years means you have to be doing something well,” said Wolfe, who does acrylic and watercolor paintings. “We’ve always had a group of artists who were willing to work together for the betterment of the good. There have always been enough of the older (members) around that we can mentor the younger artists. It’s always been a nice atmosphere at CCA. We’re happy when we sell, but we’re happy when a fellow artist sells something.” Wolfe, 78, joined the gallery two years after it opened in Broad Ripple. CCA Gallery, which moved to Carmel Arts & Design District in 2015 after 13 years in Zionsville, will celebrate its 40th anniversary from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 15 at the gallery, 111 Main St. Wolfe has been in charge of collecting former members’ artwork for what is called a Hall of Fame display. co-op. Their membership fees pay the rent. “In Zionsville, we typically had 25 artists,” said Indianapolis resident Gail Wiener, who is in her third year as CCA president. “This is a bigger space, so we are able to fit more in.” Indianapolis resident Carol Clendening won the gallery artist contest, which was voted on by more than 250 visitors. Her painting, “Backwoods Secrets,” was made into a poster to commemorate the anniversary and is now on sale.

Pi’s Figgy Piggy pizza exudes sweet notes from the goat cheese and fig jam toppings. (Photo by Anna Skinner)

Pi

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: Inside Sun King Spirits taproom and distillery, 351 Monon Blvd., Carmel What to get: Figgy Piggy Price: $12 Anna’s take: Pi is one of four restaurants inside Sun King Spirits, a taproom and distillery that features the emerging concept of food halls, where multiple eateries — each with different menus — are housed in one establishment. Upon entering the distillery, guests can be seated and browse menus from all four restaurants before choosing one. Guests also have the opportunity to sit upstairs or at the bar. From Pi, I chose the Figgy Piggy. Pi’s pizzas are personal-sized that also can be shared. The Figgy Piggy consists of mozzarel-

la, goat cheese, fig jam, mushrooms and prosciutto with a heap of arugula in the center of the pie, all atop a thin, crunchy crust. The pizza is baked in a wood-fired oven, which creates a lightly charred crust. The goat cheese brings forth sweet notes that mellow the pizza and complements the fig jam and saltiness of the prosciutto. The arugula provides a fresh, nutty flavor that tops off the pizza. The crackle of the crust complemented the richness of the overall dish. Because the dish is so rich, with a hint of

tartness from the jam, I recommend sharing it with another person and ordering one of the other pizzas, such as the Pineapple Express, which includes pineapple, ham and sea salt, and a meat lover’s pizza, among other varieties. Suggested pairings: A pint of Osiris Pale Ale ($5). The beer makes a good pairing because it it’s a paler, hoppy beverage with a slight acidity that cuts the richness of the prosciutto on the pizza and harmonizes with the greens.

Throwing shade at the searing sun

APPRECIATION DAY -11 a.m.

Commentary by Randy Sorrell

FIRST RESPONDERS APPRECIATION DAY

Shade structures are becoming more prominent as we recognize our need to escape the relentless pounding of the sun. We expect the demand to only increase as baby boomers continue to boom and the OUTDOOR LIVING subsequent generations follow their/our lead. Shade escapes can take many forms. Pergolas are certainly the most prevalent, followed closely by cantilever umbrellas and even the forward-thinking shade sails. When the budget allows and total shade is necessary, nothing is more compelling than a simple roof structure or lanais. This roof addition blends seamlessly into the pictured mid-’80s Carmel home and provides a great escape from the sun and from life’s stresses. Notice the brick-and-mortar columns, roofing shingles, gutters and trim-style which confidently match the existing home and lends credibility to the structure. For privacy and to fuel the courtyard feel, we constructed brick-and-mortar columns with a connecting wall capped with custom-steel fence panels that are now covered in climbing hydrangea. Limestone slab steppers carry you to the brick patio underfoot and is nicely surrounded by maturing oak leaf hydrangeas and native sweetspire that scream four seasons of low-maintenance interest. Expect more innovative shade structures to hit the market as the demand continues to escalate.

Tibet has a parliament without a country role in the exile government, leaving control entirely to the elected representatives. The single-chamber Tibetan Parliament in Exile is the legislative branch of the Central Tibet Administration. Although claiming authority over the entire lands and people of Tibet, the exile government focuses most of its attention on the needs of the approximately 125,000 Tibetan exiles, 100,000 of them in India, who pay voluntary taxes and receive in exchange a green book similar to a passport. Holders of the green book can then receive health, education and similar services provided by the Central Tibet Administration. In 2014, the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, with between 43 and 47 members, moved into a newly refurbished home in McLeod Ganj featuring a large portrait of the Dalai Lama.
