BUILDING ON SUCCESS Carmel’s Arts & Design District played host this summer to three of the biggest events in the city’s history: CarmelFest, Rock the District and the Carmel International Arts Festival. The corner of Main Street and Range Line would be transformed into a three-story building resembling the Old Town Shops across the street, below.

Northeast corner of Range Line Road and Main Street The site is occupied by a National City Bank branch and a street-front parking lot. City leaders and bank officials have been discussing ways to transform the area into something resembling the Old Town Shops across Main to the south, although no agreements have been signed. An artist’s rendering of one possible look was presented to bank officials by the city, although the eventual project might be quite different, as long as it fits with the city’s guidelines for the Arts & Design District. The rendering shows an L-shaped building along North Range Line and East Main Street, with

parking in the back, just as seen at the Old Town Shops. The city’s involvement would deal primarily with the parking and the streetscape, and funds would come from the Carmel Redevelopment Commission budget. The bank would spearhead the project, including the choice of contractors. The bank would occupy the street level and would still have a drive-up window. Ofﬁces or arts-related businesses such as galleries would be on the upper ﬂoors of the three-story building. One item the city wants is an outdoor sculpture area, right on the corner. A National City spokesman said it’s premature to comment on any plans for the branch.

But the city and private business have even more in store for the district in the coming months, and here’s an update on what to expect. If it comes to fruition. Carmel Arts Condos Dozens of festival-goers took advantage of the Carmel International Arts Festival Sept. 22-23 for a free tour of the Carmel Arts Condos at 30 W. Main St. Developed by the Stenz Corp., the four units are atop the Lurie Building. Work is proceeding on the model condo, which occupies the third and fourth floors at the northwest corner of the building. It should be completed in about six weeks and will have hardwood floors on the third floor and carpeting on the second. The other two units will be left somewhat unfinished so the buyers can customize their homes. The prices range from $675,000 to $800,000. If you are keeping score, the condos also have a new name. Formerly the Renaissance Condos, their name was changed to reflect their location in the Arts & Design District. (For information on the condos, call Stenz Corp. at 262-4999.)

Tuesday Morning Hearthview Residential and the city have purchased the property and building, which has been determined to be structurally unsound, according to a city ofﬁcial. One factor in the project is discovering what lies under the building. When utility crews go digging, unforeseen problems sometimes are discovered. This is what happened with the Lurie Building at 30 W. Main St., where a foundation to an old water tower was discovered. In that project, they were able to pour a new foundation around the old one.

City ofﬁcials are moving ahead with plans to create a pedestrian corridor that will link the City Center project with the Arts & Design District. Rezoning of about 60 parcels of land along Third Avenue SW from City Center drive north to Main

Street has been proposed. Seven of them are already owned by the city. The properties currently are zoned for business or residential use, and the city wants them zoned for any use, to be deﬁned by the Carmel Redevelopment Commission.

OUR TAKES Our position is presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) needs to shed her flip-flops. Last week at a Democratic debate, she stood firm against any notion of torturing terrorists. Nearly a year ago, she said torture would be A-OK, especially if there was “something imminent.” OK, so which is it? The bigger question, we suppose, is what is the next track-jump for Slick Willie’s boss? Hillaried, again. Clearly, this latest flip-flop endears her to the people from whom she is attempting to entice votes. After reportedly meeting with U.S. defense brass, though, her “ah-ha” moment appears to be imperfect. She is overdue in signing a pledge

with the American Freedom Campaign, which has demanded those seeking to move into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to oppose all torture. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) joins Hillary as the only laggards among the Democratic aspirants in signing the petition. Of course, the petition was begun in August, long after she conferred with the military leaders. This is mild, certainly, when stacked up against one of the most potent hot sauces of all time: socialized medicine. Put her in ofﬁce, America, and you’ll get EXACTLY that for which you will have paid. Also, did you hear President Bush saying last week he cares about the budget and out-ofcontrol spending? Are you still laughing, too?

HIGH COURT COURTS DEBATE Our position is the U.S. Supreme Court is sitting on a potential powder keg, given its votes could signiﬁcantly impact next year’s elections. Yesterday, The First Monday in October, the jurists took the bench after having agreed last week to hear foremost cases concerning election law and capital punishment. With respect to election law, the high court decided to two arguments on the state’s voter-identiﬁcation measure, which requires all voters to show a governmentissued picture I.D. at polling places before voting. On the other front, our justices will determine whether the combination of chemicals used often to execute prisoners is constitutional or whether it should be considered cruel and unusual punishment,

which is in contrast to the hallowed Eighth Amendment. It is said that Indiana’s voter-ID law is the most restrictive. We can hear the howling all the way to Chicago. Get over it. While we’re the last to ever suggest additional governmental controls, this one makes sense – and it should be deployed nationally. If elections are to be fair, then you need to “qualify” to cast your vote. It’s really that simple. As for the lethal-injection issue, perhaps if the practice is judged to be cruel and unusual, that just might be enough of a deterrent to end all the senseless fatal activity across this state. Last we checked, murder is cruel and unusual, too.

If you’re in the publishing industry and Hillary is in the middle of a presidential campaign run, don’t dare plan a story about her that contains negative elements or you’ll lose the opportunity to feature Bill in the process. It is good to know that those foreign countries have not forgotten our great pain of 9/11. They left us holding the bag. But you know, we are a free people, the beneficiaries of sacrifices by our countrymen who fought and died for that freedom. I watch in horror as my little origami masters remove the now Silly-Putty-like substance from their mouths (because it’s so much more fun in their hands!) and transform their pieces of watermelon blast into swans and crickets. Amazing, yes, and yet, very, very frightening. So, what to do? For the time being, and since I still have some budding artists in the mix, I think I need to stick with the boring, sugar-free gum. Enduring the complaints of children is far better than cutting clumps of gum-matted hair off a 3-year old any day. Of course, I could also start enforcing the nightly teeth-brushing and be done with bubble gum altogether. But what’s the fun in that? Peace out! It. Tastes. Fine. Now. Bubble gum: you either love it or hate it, and as a Soccer Mom of four, I haven’t yet decided which side I’m on. On the one hand, there are lots of brands that whiten, brighten and freshen without the sugar, which in our house, can really come in handy. Like, say for instance, you’ve forgotten to have your kids brush their teeth for a few days (or weeks). I’m not quite sure why, but when we finally make it to bedtime, my husband and I only have enough energy to get kids into their beds. Forget about baths, stories, even PJ’s. Oral hygiene? Umm no. So by letting my kids chew Trident or some other “healthy” sugarless gum, I delude myself into thinking it’s actually replacing the tooth brush. That’s good, right? On the other hand, allowing children under 10 to chew gum results in situations that are just plain gross [see above]. Besides the inevitable “it was only in the sandbox for a second, Mom,” gum is messy. I can’t count the number of times I’ve discovered gum stuck in air vents, entangled in hair, and of course, enmeshed in the basement sandcolored carpet where it attracts every particle

Three minutes pass. “Hey, Mom, I found my gum!” “Great. Where is it?” “It’s in my nose.” “You put your gum in your nose?” “Yep.” “Can you get it Danielle out?” Wilson “Nope.” He’s starts crying. “Try blowing it out.” (And don’t wake up your sisters!) He blows through his mouth. “It’s stuck, I can’t get it!” Sniffle, sniffle. “Don’t worry. I’ll get it out with tweezers when we get home.” “OK, Mom.” I sense an ER room in our future. And I’d just finished paying off St. V’s for his nineiron-to-the-chin-induced stitches! Two more minutes of silence. I’ve had to switch back to Radio Disney and am now jammin’ to Hillary Duff. “Hey, Mom. I got my gum out!” “Oh, good! Let’s throw it away when we get home. It’s probably got boogers all over it.” “No, it doesn’t. I cleaned it on my shirt. It tastes fine now.”

We really don’t have a mud room, just a small closet and a hallway with a laundry room as you come in from the garage. What are some ideas for creating a mud room and adding storage? Answer: One of the trends in home building is a mudroom with built-in storage. A mudroom is a small room or entryway in a house where wet or muddy footwear and clothing/belongings can be removed. Here are some issues to consider regarding mud rooms: 1. Define your needs: Decide what you need first. In which sports or activities do your children participate? What items do the adults in the home need to store? Consider how your family will use this entryway from the garage. 2. How do you create the space? First look at eliminating the closet. Also look at the feasibility of moving walls. Perhaps you can reconfigure the laundry room and hallway space to provide more space for a mudroom. 3. Storage options: Storage options can range from the very simple to elaborate depending on your budget and the space

available. A good ﬁnish carpenter can build custom built-ins. A locker with beadboard on the back with hooks is nice for storing book bags and jackets. Open cubbies above the lockers ﬁt storage baskets for smaller, loose items. A bench is helpful for donning shoes. Open shelving below the bench may work well for storing footwear. Cabinets can range from stock cabinets to custom-built. Also consider whether you want storage cubbies to be open or have doors. 4. Furniture storage options: Retailers such as Pottery Barn and Target sell pre-made storage lockers. Evan Lurie has been looking forward to this week for four years. In 2003, he uprooted his family to move his art gallery from California to Carmel. This week, the curtain rises on the new Evan Lurie Gallery at 30 W. Main St., Carmel. Back in May, when the opening date was uncertain due to construction delays on the eponymous building, Lurie anticipated the excitement of today. “When I closed the Glass Garage, my gallery in West Hollywood, I decided to come here,” he said. “I Evan Lurie met (Carmel Mayor) Jim Brainard in 2003, and he was looking for someone to spearhead the Arts & Design District development at a time I was looking to make a change.” Working behind the scenes for the last four years, Lurie has wooed many other galleries to the district. He hosted a festive invitation-only opening party on Saturday evening and allowed visitors to the Carmel International Arts Festival to wander through the uncompleted space a week before. Now, it’s time for the public to get a look inside as the glass doors — adorned by massive sculptural handles — of the Evan Lurie Fine Art Gallery ofﬁcially open today.

Instructions: Dump all the ingredients into a large resealable bag, seal and shake until the chicken is evenly coated. Refrigerate the bag for 1 to 2 hours. In the meantime, tear off four 15-inch-long pieces of foil.

Bar Louie, a new neighborhood bar and grill aiming to be a real-life “Cheers” (where everyone knows your name), opened Sept. 14 in Clay Terrace. “Everyone who walks in the door is a member of the family,” said Jeff Lloyd, director of operations. Lloyd said 95 percent of its food is made from scratch. Also, it has an extensive bar menu with 31 specialty drinks. In a few weeks, Bar Louie will begin its Dollar Burger Night, where its regular burgers will each cost only $1. This is the 36th Bar Louie restaurant; the other nearest location is in Fort Wayne. Despite being a chain restaurant, Lloyd said each restaurant is able to keeps its individuality and uniqueness and adapt to its location. “We spend a lot of time concentrating on our staff, and through our staff, our customers,” Lloyd said. “You can come to Bar Louie and have a good time.”

Sgt. Gerald Joseph Cassidy II passed away Sept. 21, 2007 at Fort Knox, Ky. He was on medical holdover, having been injured while serving for 11 months in Iraq and was still considered by the Army to be on active duty. Sgt. Cassidy had been a member of Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 150th Field Artillery in Lebanon. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1992 and joined the Indiana National Guard in 2003. As a guardsman, he was previously assigned to a unit of the 152nd Mechanized Infantry and served with fellow Hoosiers in Bosnia-

Alexus. He has many loving wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins from his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side of the family. Services were September 30 at Leppert Mortuary, Smith Carmel Chapel. Burial was Hamilton Memorial Park on State Road 32, east of Westfield. In lieu of flowers, Sgt.
