Neighborhood watch Here are five that we found interesting. There’s no typical Carmel neighborhood. That’s what we discovered when Current in Carmel set out to ﬁnd unusual or special neighborhoods in the city. Here are the ﬁve we chose to feature, for absolutely subjec-

Cool Creek Estates When Fiona O’Connor and her husband were looking to move their family to Carmel, he found the perfect home on the Internet. It was in Cool Creek Estates, an older neighborhood with lots of beautiful trees. It was a real homecoming for Fiona O’Connor, who grew up in Cool Creek Estates, which is north of 126th Street just east of Keystone Avenue. Her parents live one street away. And the name isn’t just the ﬁgment of some builder’s imagination – Cool Creek actually runs through the area. The woods and water attract wildlife, such as foxes and owls, O’Connor says. It’s a family-oriented neighborhood, which has a Fourth of July parade, Easter egg hunt and Christmas decorating contests.

Thornhurst Addition This small addition, consisting of one road and a small cul-de-sac features homes designed by Avriel Shull, a Carmel resident and architect. The California-style ranches were unlike the other homes being built in Carmel in the 1950s and ’60s. Shull also was a builder and an interior decorator. Turnover is slow in the neighborhood. Old Town/Arts & Design District After her older daughter went to college, Judy Erner and her younger daughter were left with too large a home, so the family moved to Old Town in 1995. Old Town offered Erner, events manager at the Hamilton County Convention and Visitors Bureau, what she needed – an affordable home (prices are in the low $100,000s) in the Carmel School District. Other perks of the area include the Monon Trail and shops and restaurants of the Arts & Design District. Another housing choice are the new condos on Main Street, such as the Carmel Arts Residences and Monon & Main. Condo prices are $200,000 up to $800,000. – Compiled by Liz Juranek and Jim Lindgren. Attracting not only joggers and bikers, but a multitude of wildlife not often seen in the Indianapolis area, Estancia is a neighborhood of just seven homes off 106th Street and Spring Mill Road. The houses, which sit on ﬁve acres or more, are situated near Williams Creek and a wooded area. Coyotes, foxes and turkey vultures are some of the animals seen, Estancia Neighborhood Association President Janet Nine said. There is a half-mile drive to get into the non-gated neighborhood, which about 30 years ago used to be an airstrip. “When I was ﬁrst shown the neighborhood, I thought, ‘Good God, where am I going?’ ” Nine said. But the narrow, tree-lined road is “quite lovely,” she said. She said the architecture is “all over the place,” describing her home as “pseudo Tudor” while the home adjacent to hers is “probably the most glorious home in the neighborhood,” designed after an English manor. However, despite the large homes and secluded area, the English manor was recently listed for $3.4 million, but sold for $2.4 million because of “the sensitive market and overbuilding,” Nine said. “These homes don’t have

The entry to Estancia . big theater rooms and wine cellars,” she said. However, she said they are well-constructed and the large amount of land dwarfs the “postage stamp” size lots of newer developments which sell for similar prices. Estancia homes are “lovely but not ostentatious,” Nine said.

Rosemeade Commons Sixteen turn-of-thecentury-style homes line a cul-de-sac in the Rosemeade Commons neighborhood. Homeowners Association President John Sommerkamp said the neighborhood is active and friendly. “It’s the ﬁrst place I ever lived where I knew everybody,” Sommerkamp said. “It’s as close-knit a neighborhood as you can get. We talk all the time, and there are social gatherings a couple times a year.” He attributes this to the sidewalks and porches that encourage people to go outside and talk. An architectural committee and the homeowners association must approve exterior changes, so the homes keep the Victorian appearance. Most of the homes were built about 10 years

ago; Sommerkamp moved to the neighborhood in 1999. The look of the neighborhood drew him to it, as did it being within walking distance to downtown Carmel and now the Monon Trail and Monon Center. The houses average 3,800 to 4,000 square feet, and most run in the $450,000 to $650,000 price range. The unique appearance attracts buyers, and homes are sold less than a month after being on the market, Sommerkamp said.

OUR TAKES It is our position that the city’s decision to pursue a Special Census was a good one. It turns out that the $1 million invested to account for all the citizens of our growing community has generated a threeand-a-half-times return. With the completion of the year 2000 Census, Carmel boasted a population of 37,733. Annexations have brought another 13,000 or so to the mix since then. But at the conclusion of this Special Census, our rolls are up to 68,653 – exceeding the estimates from the mayor’s ofﬁce of 65,000. Excluding numbers gained in annexation, that number pushes our city’s population growth

just above an astonishing 16 percent since 2000. When the mayor took the risk of ﬁnancing the Special Census, most agreed that we’d see some increases – perhaps even enough to cover the cost of the new count. But the surprisingly strong numbers reﬂect the vibrancy of our community. Carmel will receive another $3.5 million back in tax dollars we were previously giving to the state for use in other communities. With the expected annexation of Southwest Clay Township (estimated between 12,000 and 10,000), our community could top 80,000.

BRING THE MONEY HOME It is our position that the Carmel Clay Schools and Carmel Police Department are to be lauded for their good work in securing a matching federal government grant of nearly $200,000 for the installation and upgrade of digital video security equipment in all of our schools. Indiana remains a “donor” state. That means we pay our taxes to the federal government so it can turn around and prop up the failing and ineffective governments in other states – think the city of New Orleans and Boston’s Big Dig. We’d prefer that Massachusetts would lease its own toll road to pay for the

most expensive single road project in U.S. history, but Ted Kennedy thought that hard-earned Hoosier dollars would be easier. While we argue that federal tax cuts would be even better than federal grants, anything that can be done to keep our cash home is a good thing. But given the unlikeliness of any federal tax cuts in the current political environment in Washington, we are all for Hoosiers working to keep our dollars at home. Moreover, ofﬁcials are on target to use the best and most current technologies to keep our kids and their schools safe.

LOTS OF FREE-THINKERS Editor:

The column, “There Aren’t That Many Atheists” by Bob Walters in a recent issue of Current in Carmel (10/2/2007) is so full of misinformation that it is hard to know where to begin. Nearly all scientific discoveries and social reforms throughout history have been initiated and led by “freethinkers.” These are persons who do not accept the doctrine of organized religion or the prevailing opinions and theories of their day whether in physics as with Einstein, in government as with Madison and Jefferson, or religion. Among the members of the National Academy of Sciences and Nobel Laureates, over 90 percent do not believed in a deity. Freethinkers demand evidence and hold religion to the same scrutiny and standard of evidence as they do any other idea or opinion that is advanced. Consequently, they are atheists, agnostics, or at the very minimum, deists who do not believe in a personal God who answers prayers and certainly do not adhere to the doctrine of any organized religion. For readers who want to explore this topic more, I suggest they go to www.ffrf.org to find a very long list of freethinkers who have made great contributions throughout history. I realize that you are only saying that his ideas are not the official editorial stance of your publication. On other topics, your variety of columnists presents a balance, but as far as religion is concerned, you have only the one columnist, Mr. Walters. This accounts for the necessity for the disclaimer. Your disclaimer is therefore the correct thing to do, in my opinion. I have a suggestion, for what it’s worth. I recall Bruce Braden’s letter in the August 28th issue of Current. It was an informative and interesting commentary on a religious topic. Mr. Braden must be a serious student of religions, especially the Judeo-Christian religion. I would like to see a regular column by Bruce Braden. It would provide a balance between his rational discussion of religion and Bob Walters’ fundamentalist sermons. Then you could put disclaimers on both or neither. It would reinforce your journalistic neutrality. Glen E. Bruce’s right to express his viewpoint. I would like to respond to the specific paragraph of his letter that implies that I did not respect the opinions of his wife and she felt degraded and insulted by me. In the spirit of my original column, Cecilia Calabrese, please accept my apology. I am sorry. Jeff Worrell 46033 PRICE OF PROGRESS Editor: Why does Carmel need a change? I believe that Carmel has grown into a beautiful place to live, but at what price? When most of the city’s debt comes due around the year 2011, what will our taxes do at that point? Recently at a Carmel City Council meeting, I heard the District 1 Councilman announce that the council is only responsible for the corporate/city component of our tax bill. Really? Then what was the Monon Center? When the council approved the Monon Center’s $55 million bond it was understood that taxes would increase $50 per every $100,000 of assessed valuation. This is part of our township component. Certainly this was an oversight by this councilman. I find that Carmel needs a change on the council. Not people to change Carmel’s path, but people who truly want Carmel to grow responsibly. We can pay down the debt we have now, then move forward with our plans. What is the rush? What happened to good old conservative politics? I encourage everyone to get out and vote on Nov. 6, 2007. Anne Slamkowski Independent Candidate District 1, Carmel City Council REASONABLE GROWTH Editor: Density. For months I have been talking to local residents about what it means and what effect it could and would have one day on our quality of life. On Oct. 8 the Carmel Clay School Board conducted a hearing on redistricting. Why? Simply because our schools have become overcrowded. With the growth explosion in Carmel comes various side-effects, one of which is increased population and the necessary ancillary services required to support the people. However, so long as the Carmel Council sees fit to go along with developers and approve zoning variances for multi-family housing, then the ultimate effect will result in more people in a compacted area. This creates a denser population thus creating situations leading to increased traffic and, of course, an increase in the number of children attending school, which then ultimately leads to overcrowded classrooms and overworked teachers. Let’s continue to have development in Carmel, but let’s plan for sound, practical and reasonable growth so that we can provide adequate services necessary for our day-to-day well-being. The phrase “damned if you do and damned if you don’t” is quite apt. Most people who run for public office in Carmel either spend their own money or that of friends and business associates who donate to their campaigns. To send out just one mailer to every registered voter in a district costs approximately $1,500 (design, printing and postage). If you’re running city-wide, multiply that by five. Wow! A lot of money to throw that flier in the trash. So the most cost-effective way to get your name out to the public is signs, those colorful little placards on lawns and along roads appearing regularly before May and November elections. It’s the timing, as well as the placement, that is at issue. We all know a sign in front of a citizen’s home is best, especially if they live

So when your neighbor throws his, or her, hat into the ring, celebrate the strength of our democracy, the variety of our choices and allow these “signs of democracy” to flourish freely for three weeks before an election, as long as they all disappear within 48 hours after. My husband is led into a stuffy office to discuss “the procedure” with a so-called “doctor” he’s never met. How can he entrust his most prized possessions to someone nicknamed “the butcher”? But before he can really ponder this, he finds himself flat on his back, halfnaked, with smoke rising from his nether-regions. “Is something on fire?” he asks. “Of course it is, son,” the masked man replies with a big Texas drawl, “But don’t you worry, I haven’t lost one yet! Not this week, anyway.” After all the crap women must deal with — periods, cramps, pap smears, LEAP’s, infertility treatments, pregnancy, labor, episiotomies, C-sections — and you can’t step up to the plate on this one? Come on! Be a man! It’s a minor outpatient “surgery,” which — in most cases — is covered by insurance. And while there is some risk of infection, if you follow the pre- and post-op instructions, you’ll be fine. (Unlike a friend of ours who decided to forego the weekend rest-and-recovery period for a wild night of debauchery and ended up on two-months of bed rest. Love ya, M.H!) Furthermore, vasectomies do not affect sexual desire or performance, contrary to locker room lore. In other words, you’ll lose your ability to father a child, but not your mojo.

What do you believe Carmel will look like in ﬁve to 10 years?

How can you help improve the quality of life for Carmel residents?

If there were something you could change about Carmel, what would it be?

Managing growth as the city moves into the future. As a member of the council, I will objectively analyze issues by looking at more than a piece of paper. I will push for full public disclosure so citizens can be involved in the process. I will look at actions in the macro sense to ensure that our infrastructure can support our growth, and that we have revenue streams to pay for it.

A thriving, ﬁscally responsible, residential city with great schools, low taxes, little congestion, and an infrastructure that supports both residents and businesses.

I can improve the quality of life of Carmel residents by representing their interests on the city council, rather than other politicians or interests. This is why we call representative government.

I would like to see a larger percentage of the population vote. Many brave men and women have given their lives to defend our country and our right to vote. Therefore, I encourage all registered voter to exercise that right on Nov. 6.

The city has taken over Keystone and is considering an enormous renovation project. The state is planning to turn Meridian into an interstate. These projects can be complementary, or they could conﬂict and bring Carmel to a grinding halt. The manner in which those projects proceed will mean a great deal to the survival of our local businesses and the tax revenue they generate, and the quality of life of our residents.

I was born and raised in Carmel, and I am proud to have chosen to return to raise my family here. I believe in progress and sustainable growth. Carmel is bigger than ever, and if we maintain our infrastructure and carefully manage our debt we will continue to attract residents and businesses. With careful stewardship, Carmel will remain the destination city for business and families.

By assuring them that the city is answering to them, rather than one person or one party. With one-party rule we can never really be conﬁdent that we are hearing truth, hashed out in open debate, not rubber-stamped by private agreement. Furthermore, my interest is not short-term. My husband and I are business owners and will raise our children here. Decisions made today will affect my family for decades.

Our debt is nearly $400 million dollars. It is a debt we can sustain when times are good, and if we can trust the projections and promises all coming from the same people. We need independent, professional ﬁnancial managers on the council, who will ensure that our debt level does not rise beyond our capacity to pay for it. We need to objectively review future projects and ensure return on taxpayer investment.

What is the most important issue facing Carmel today? The most important issue facing Carmel today is the city’s debt. It is one thing having “a little debt,” but quite another having a large anticipated debt! We need to pay down on what we have now before we start spending again. There is nothing wrong with the mayor’s vision for Carmel. It is the rate at which it appears he wants it done that I am hearing from the community that they are objecting.

What do you believe Carmel will look like in ﬁve to 10 years?

How can you help improve the quality of life for Carmel residents?

If there were something you could change about Carmel, what would it be?

I believe Carmel in ﬁve years will continue to be a thriving, vibrant community. In 10 years, may I have a crystal ball, anyone?

Not everyone in our community earns the $75,000 average income that has been reported. We need to talk to those members of our community who do not earn that amount. I suspect they would say more affordable rental housing. Last I checked, a decent and safe rental community costs above what I would expect an average person starting out could pay!

If there were something I could change in Carmel it is the thought “newer is better.” I like the quaintness of Main Street, which our mayor has striven to preserve. City Center? I’d have to give it more scrutiny before I could give an answer.

FOUNDATION RAFFLE TICKETS: The Carmel Clay Education Foundation is selling raffle tickets for a $10,000 college scholarship. Foundation director Lorri Brune said the tickets are $50, and only 400 will be sold. The scholarship winner may deposit the funds for a child of any age for higher education. Brune said the raffle will benefit the foundation, which gives scholarships to selected Carmel High School students and grants to Carmel Clay teachers. but I believe everything happens for a reason. Maybe this gives us an opportunity to spend quality time with our children. Or it’s a chance to communicate with them on a level that focuses on our unconditional commitment to their well being. Having dinner together at a reasonable hour can be a welcome change. We, nor our children, are defined by comparison. We are defined by the “path of contentment” we choose to take for ourselves and our families. A habit of comparison can lead us to dissatisfaction with everything we own and everybody we love, and offers our children excuses to compare themselves against others. Whatever the circumstances are, they are not to be compared to anyone or anything. The lessons to be learned may not be recognizable today, but trust me when I tell you that they will be immeasurable down the “road to contentment.” When our young men and woman see us handle adversity and disheartening events with acceptance and gratitude, we will have defined ourselves to our children so they will learn to accept and be grateful for a quality of life that far outweighs the score. DIGITAL NATIVES DIFFER FROM IMMIGRANTS

oday’s youth are growing up digital. Current students from kindergarten to college have grown up digital. Meaning simply, the life-changing technology that abounds today is more natural for this group than older generations — a relatively loose term considering it would apply to anyone older than 30. Called “digital natives” this younger audience is totally comfortable with technology since it was always part of their culture. Compare them to “digital immigrants,” who grew up in an “analog” world. Small children now have laptops and cell phones. They spend countless hours in social communities, like Webkinz World — a world where you “adopt” a virtual version of a stuffed animal — instead of playing outside. In this new world, boys will spend more time gaming than watching television. Text and

instant-messaging are commonplace for those younger than 30, while older generations can’t even seem to work the keypad of their phone to send a “text” or understand how to set up their instant messenger account. As digital natives continue to take a larger stake in the business world, the fundamental shift will continue. There is no going back. Digital is the future, and for those that didn’t grow up digital, you will always be an immigrant. Digital natives generally view communications with a pull strategy as most effective. A pull strategy is one where the information is so compelling that the user “pulls” it to them. Push marketing strategies are those that push information to users. Although considered less

effective for digital natives, it does have merit for digital immigrants. This audience generally prefers to have information fed to them versus having to search for it. And when it comes to marketing, businesses must consider their audience. Don’t always assume that how you want to distribute information is how the customer wants their information packaged. Keep in mind, no matter how hard you try, if you are an immigrant there is no process for you to become a citizen of the digital world — so consider taking some advice from the natives. Carl Franklin Burton, 81, of Carmel, passed away Oct. 1, 2007. He was born Aug. 10, 1926 in Berea, Ky., to the late Horace and Zephry Anna Burton. Mr. Burtin proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a talented brick layer, working with the Geupel Demars Co. before retiring in 1991. Mr. Burton is survived by his wife, Elaine Amory Burton; his children Shelley Lancaster, Jennifer Kelly and Margaret Burton; step-children Robert (Carrie) Amory and Georganne (Sonny) McCord; grandchildren Taylor, Pat, Nick, Scott, Alex, Ian and Brianna. He was preceded in death by his ﬁrst wife and the mother of his children, Jewell Shelley Burton, and grandson Brian Amory. Friends and family gathered Oct. 3 in Leppert Mortuary, Smith Carmel Chapel. Frieda M. Fowler, 90, of Indianapolis, passed away Oct. 1, 2007. She was born Aug. 17, 1917 in Dugger, Ind., to the late Guy O. and Leona E. Rector Shanks. Mrs. Fowler served as the payroll supervisor for the Danner Brothers store in downtown Indianapolis for 27 years, retiring in 1980. After her retirement, she worked as a sales associate with the Lazarus Department Store and lovingly cared for her husband. Mrs. Fowler was known as a very loving person who truly enjoyed her pugs and milkshakes from

On June 29, 1942, she married Glenn Fritzlen, who survives. PROPER STRATEGY INCLUDES MORE THAN BRICKS AND MORTAR

By Larry Greene, Case Handyman & Remodeling Question: I see a trend toward stone and brick being used on the interior of homes. What materials are available? What are some creative ways to use brick or stone when we finish our basement? Answer: Twenty years ago, builders would use full-size stone or brick on the interior of a home. This is labor intensive and requires structural support because of the weight of the material. Today the market has moved away from real stone and brick to using architectural stone veneers and thin-brick. These are artificial products that look like real stone or brick but are much lighter, which allows easier installation. 1. Which product to use? • Thin-brick: Thin-brick looks exactly like real brick, but it’s only about a halfinch thick. It is realistic looking, and is available in “weathered” styles where it is “tumbled” during manufacturing to look 50 to 100 years old. The pieces of thin-brick come in flats or corners. • Cultured stone: Cultured stone is artificial and comes in a variety colors and styles, ranging from a smooth river rock to various kinds of natural stone. Cultured stone is typically 1 ½- to 2-inches thick with a flat backside.

2. Where to install? Think about your design theme. While stone and brick accents add character, too much will create a “cold” feeling in the basement. Some common uses in a basement are: • Fireplace wall or surround: Consider adding stone or brick to the wall surrounding a ﬁreplace. This can range from covering the entire wall, to just installing around the ﬁreplace as a surround. • Columns and beams: Wrapping a column or beam adds a nice architectural touch without overpowering the room with too much of the stone/brick look. • Wet bars: Install the stone/brick on the front of the bar or enhance the backsplash under your wall cabinets. 3. Interior installation issues: Architectural stone/brick veneers are typically installed by either a mason or tile setter. The individual pieces are installed with mortar joints to provide a realistic look. Another option is “dry-stack” installation without mortar joints. Make sure your installer uses the proper type of underlayment, as these materials cannot be installed directly over drywall.

ll that glitters was not just gold at the 2007 High Point Fall Home Furnishing Show. The show, Oct. 1-9 in High Point, N.C., was illuminated with crystal, mirrored furnishings, polished nickel lamps and luminescent glass mosaic. Colors seem to be cleaner with layers of shine. Elegance was a design thread that could not be ignored. Furnishings with a French influence of grace and grandeur were abundant. Crystals that were formerly found in opulent chandeliers were found adorning pillows, suspended from candlesticks Vicky Earley and embedded in Decor mirror frames. It was a welcome return to a celebration of beauty for the sake of beauty. Modern furnishings took a divided stand. Some of the contemporary exhibits were spin-offs from the age of technology. These home furnishings offered sleek lines in blacks and whites accented with crisp greens and magentas. The other modern camp saluted the

opulent Golden Age of Hollywood and was alive with glitz and glamour. The sparkle that illuminated contemporary showrooms strayed into traditional exhibits, as well. Nickel danced with gold, while silver was paired with antique bronze. The combinations were a delightful stretch of all the rules about mixing metals. Some of the most interesting pieces were the ones that refused to be classified. Mirrored consoles were seen in opulent European design showrooms as well as the sleek moderns. Metallics will reign for 2008, with accents in silver, bronze, copper and gold. There is new trend for distressed or antique metallic finish, which will suit the natural interior particularly well. Even the natural interior will have some shimmer — even though it’s bit more pearl-like. Rough, irregular finishes and textures will also be popular. Geometric styling will be the focus of shape in furnishings and accessories. Circles, ovals and swirls will dominate the design in everything from fabric to lighting to furniture.
