Democrat to join council; referendum OK’d By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A Democrat will serve on the city council for the first time in Carmel’s history. ELECTION Democrat Miles Nelson defeated Republican Debra Minott to win the West District in the Nov. 5 general election. With all precincts reporting but results not certified, Nelson received 56.04 percent of the vote to Minott’s 43.96 percent. “We are thrilled to Nelson have won. We had an amazing group of volunteers who worked tirelessly, and this victory is the result of their efforts,” Nelson said. “We knocked on over 7,000 doors and spoke to thousands of residents of the West District. My goal is to take what I learned from those conversations and to represent the West District as I promised that I would by being an independent voice on the council.” The race did not have an incumbent because redistricting added a city council district. Carmel voters overwhelmingly approved the school safety referendum, with more than 68 percent of voters casting ballots in favor of a 5 cent increase per $100 of assessed home value. Carmel Clay Schools will receive $40 million during the next eight years to place at least one school resource officer in every school, provide additional mental health programming and provide professional development and training to improve school safety and reduce violence. “Tonight’s results reflect a supportive community that cares deeply about the safety and well-being of all Carmel Clay Schools students,” CCS Supt. Michael Beresford stated in a Nov. 5 press release. “With the passage of this referendum, we can begin adding important layers of school safety to our schools and wrap resources around students who are struggling. Thank you to our Carmel community, as well as to the Carmel SOS parent group, for their support and understanding that a safe school environment is essential for students to learn, grow and thrive.” Republicans who ran unopposed in the general election include incum-

bent Mayor Jim Brainard, Sue Wolfgang for city clerk, incumbent Brian Poindexter for city court judge, Adam Aasen for the city council Southeast District and incumbent Tony Green for the Southwest District. Unopposed at-large city council candidates were Kevin “Woody” Rider, Jeff Worrell and Tim Hannon. In Hamilton County, 15.62 percent of registered voters participated in the general election. Visiting a real ghost town Commentary by Ann Marie Shambaugh It wasn’t quite Halloween yet when I found myself walking through a real ghost town, CHERNOBYL through eerily quiet streets that were full of people and promise not all that long ago. On a stunningly beautiful day in mid-October, I visited the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, a 1,000-square-mile area surrounding the nuclear reactor in the Ukraine that exploded in April 1986, the most devastating nuclear accident in world history. The disaster — which the former Soviet Union initially tried to downplay — led to the horrific radiation poisoning deaths of several first responders and longterm health consequences that many people in the region still face today. Visitors to the Exclusion Zone must pass through checkpoints and wear a device that measures radiation picked up throughout the day. One day in the zone would be harmless, we were told; apparently, we absorbed more radiation on our transatlantic flight. The city of Chernobyl — which is 9 miles from the reactor — was our first stop upon entering the zone. Most of the homes there are caving in, but a few of the houses appeared to be in much better shape. Those are homes where people still live, our guide told us, despite the government’s many attempts to force evacuation. As we drove closer to the nuclear reactor, signs of life continued to vanish. Instead of houses, we saw mounds of buried dwellings, some topped by signs warning of continued high levels of radiation. Soon, the infamous striped cooling tower and New Safe Confinement — completed in 2018 to keep radioactive particles inside — came into view. The area around the power plant was well-maintained in stark contrast to everything around it. That’s because, 33 years after the explosion, people still work there. The final reactor shut down in 2000, but the process of decommissioning a nuclear power plant does not happen quickly. Our next stop was Pripyat, a city founded in 1970 to provide housing

A home crumbles in the city of Chernobyl. See more photos at youarecurrent.com/?p=185216 (Photo by Ann Marie Shambaugh)

for the power plant’s workers and their families. Pripyat, home to nearly 50,000 people at the time of the disaster, is less than 2 miles from the reactor and is completely abandoned. The government evacuated the town approximately 36 hours after the explosion, and its inhabitants believed they’d be able to soon return home. That never happened, and today the town is a monument to Soviet life. Pripyat was a desirable place to live in the 1980s, with multiple swimming pools, a sports stadium and an amusement park that was set to open less than a week after the explosion. Today, those structures still stand, some stronger than others. What stands out most in my mind is walking through one of the many apartment buildings, catching glimpses of normalcy. A dust-covered piano in the corner. A shoe missing its match in the middle of a bedroom. A baby doll resting on a windowsill in the room of a girl who likely was the same age as I when the tragedy occurred. The apartment building, more than anything else, tugged at my heart. Where are these people now? What losses have they suffered beyond homes? What happy memories once occurred within these walls? Visiting Chernobyl gave me insight into the depth of a tragedy that shaped Ukraine and its people into what they are today.

Cherish will conduct its third annual Death by Chocolate event Nov. 21 at The Meeting FUNDRAISER House, 2000 East New Market St., Carmel, offering confections to raise money for the countywide child advocacy group. “We are the child advocacy center that helps coordinate and provide the professional interview and forensic investigations of child abuse,” Cherish Executive Director Wendy Gamble said. Cherish’s work can often be challenging to discuss, which is why the organization decided to conduct a non-traditional fundraiser. “It’s not a topic that people like to talk about,” Gamble said. “So, we decided three years ago that we wanted to have a fundraiser that people had fun coming to because the purpose of a fundraiser is for us to be able to continue doing our work.” The event starts at 7 p.m. Guests can enjoy chocolate and beverage samples from local restaurants and businesses, including Eddie Merlots, Krenolie’s Donuts, Texas Roadhouse, Cooper’s Hawk, divvy, Woodys Library Restaurant, Sun King Brewery, Basket Pizzazz and Cretia Cakes. General admission tickets are $45, VIP tickets are $100 and a four-pack of tickets is $150. For more, visit cherishcac.org/events.

COMPELLING CONVERSATIONS & YOU

RICK STEVES AMERICA’S AUTHORITY ON EUROPEAN TRAVEL

From left, moderator Pete Quinn, Gene Keady and Leroy Keyes Oct. 24 at Carmel High School (Photo by Mark Ambrogi)

Purdue legends share tales By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Retired Purdue men’s basketball coach Gene Keady loves the way Matt Painter coaches FUNDRAISER his former team. Painter is one of Keady’s former players, but Keady said Painter wasn’t always sold on Keady’s coaching methods. “When Matt came to (Purdue), his dad was a lawyer in Muncie. He came home as a freshman and said, ‘Dad, I don’t know if coach Keady knows what the hell he’s doing,’” Keady said. “His dad said, ‘I’m sure he wants to start his worst players. Shut up, get back to campus, go to class and do what he tells you.’ You see, that turned out pretty well for him. He does a great job teaching.” Painter replaced Keady in 2005 when Keady retired after 25 years of coaching. Keady and former Purdue football great Leroy Keyes shared quips and stories Oct. 24 at Carmel High School. The event was a fundraiser for the school’s backpack program, which provides food for students on weekends. Keyes returned to Purdue as running backs coach in 1995 and 1996 under former coach Jim Colletto. Star fullback Mike Alstott was in his senior year in ’95. “(Alstott) told me he was going to pass me in the record books,” Keyes said. “He said, ‘You’ll be a has-been by the time I’m done.’ I said, ‘Let me tell you one thing, young man, you got a chance to play at Purdue for four years.’ I came to Purdue and I couldn’t play as a freshman (per NCAA rules). I had to sit and learn to be a student

first before I could play. Because I played defense for one year, I got just (12) carries as a sophomore, so I said, ‘Mike, don’t talk about your record. If I played offense for four years and carried the ball 600 times at 5.7 yards a carry (Keyes’ career average was 5.9), we would still be talking about Mike Who.’” Alstott is Purdue’s all-time leading rusher with 3,635 yards on 644 carries. Keyes, who played defensive back as a sophomore, rushed for 2,090 yards on 354 attempts.

Double duty Carmel police force includes veterans, members of military By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com There is a natural correlation between serving in the military and on the police force. COVER STORY Officer Paul Meehan is one of several members of the Carmel Police Dept. who are either active in the military or are veterans. “Being forced into stressful situations in the military and knowing how to deal with that really helped me out for the police world,” said Meehan, a captain in the Army Reserves. CPD officer David Commodore and Meehan have been with CPD since July 2018. Commodore was with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for more than five years. Commodore, 35, was active duty in the U.S. Army for six years and got out of the National Guard in May after six years. “It’s a similar brotherhood and a sense of camaraderie in the police world as in the military,” Commodore said. “In the military, you are doing a lot more together on a daily basis. I think that what draws the military to the police force is the uniform, the sense of camaraderie and the sense of brotherhood.” Meehan, a Westfield resident, was a police officer in Everett, Wash., for nearly seven years. The police departments in Everett and Carmel have been accommodating to his military obligations. “Both chiefs have been supportive, whether it’s training or whatever is extra,” Meehan said. “As I get up there in rank, the military is going to require more and more of my time, because my responsibility is greater.” Meehan, 34, grew up in Huntington. He moved to Everett because his wife,

Paul Meehan, second from left, participates in leader engagement with local nationals and tribal elders in Gardez Region, Afghanistan. (Submitted photo)

From right, Carmel Police Dept. Sgt. Michael Todd Rush, officer David Commodore, Sgt. John Govin and officer Paul Meehan. (Photo by Ben Stout)

Natalie, was then active in the Navy and transferred to Washington. Meehan is an operating officer in a battalion outside of Detroit and does two weeks a year of training. He also serves one weekend a month and does other administrative work through the week. Meehan, who was deployed to Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011 as part of an engineer battalion from Ohio, has been in the Army Reserves for 11 years. During his deployment in Afghanistan, his unit searched for, and disarmed, improvised explosive devices. “I did about 38 combat patrols for IEDs,” he said. “The rest of the time was doing operations work.” Commodore, a Noblesville resident, said this year was a good time to take a break because he is relatively new to CPD. “I’m thinking of going back in to get my 20 years (of service),” Commodore said. “Do another eight years and, voila, retirement.”

Commodore was deployed to Iraq in 2006 and returned in 2007. “I was an intelligence analyst drafting reports when I was deployed,” he said. “Going active duty was a great stepping stone into adulthood. I went in right after high school. It taught me a lot of life skills. It was very beneficial. I got to travel the world with the military, see a lot of different states and countries.”

John Govin CPD Sgt. John Govin, a Carmel resident, has been with the Air Force Air National Guard for 13 years and with CPD for nine years. He is an Air Force technical sergeant, performing aircraft maintenance on computer systems, navigation and flight instruments. Govin was deployed to Afghanistan twice and Kuwait once. “My actual job in the Air Force is not as similar because I work on airplanes,” he said. “It’s a fast-paced environment. It’s demanding if you work

on an aircraft and something goes wrong, because that’s somebody’s life in that airplane that you can’t mess up. It’s the same way in this job. We deal with a lot of situations where, because of the high stakes, there is little room for error.” The two positions give Govin the best of both worlds. “I always wanted to be a police officer, and I’ve always been obsessed with airplanes,” he said. Govin wanted to be a pilot grownig up, but he knew his eyesight wasn’t strong enough to allow that. “Aircraft mechanic was another way to get me involved,” he said.

Michael Todd Rush Sgt. Michael Todd Rush has been with CPD since 2003. He joined the Air Force in 1994, left active duty in 1998 and has been in the Air Force reserves ever since. Rush, who was deployed to Iraq for six months in 2009 and 2010, is in the security forces. He provided law enforcement services to the forward operating base in Iraq. He also has been deployed to other locations in the Persian Gulf region. “It’s a broadening experience,” he said. “It’s slightly different than what I do at the police department. It’s similar enough that some of the skills and experience that are transferrable help make me a better police officer.” Rush supervises one of the night patrol shifts for CPD.

ESSAY

Balancing act

Is Carmel council ‘double dipping’?

Commentary by Terry Anker Do you want the good news or the bad? Conventional wisdom teaches us to get the bad out of the way first. Let’s confront the broccoli before we enjoy the dessert. It probably is not a bad idea. If we frame our thinking in terms of the most difficult at the outset, we are better equipped to handle tough challenges when fresh and enjoy the upside after the battle. This approach to life is time-tested to provide superior long-term results, yet much of modern life seems to be predicated on anything but the “long-term.” Companies squeeze reinvestment in favor of executive bonuses. Governments provide generous benefits instantly while knowingly off-laying the responsibility to pay for those programs on future generations. And nonprofits are lauded for meeting today’s needs, not tomorrow’s. Executives and officials are measured on a quarterly (or daily) basis. If we don’t produce right now, there may be no later. Have we developed a culture of urgency at the expense of one that values planning and investment? We prefer immediate returns and satisfaction while shunning the accounting for it all. Can we build a house without a solid foundation? Can we have a stable forest of only fast-growing trees? Can we put the cart before the horse? A bias for action is good, and we often eat too much at dinner to fully enjoy dessert. Still, can’t we find a healthy balance?

Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. You may email him at terry@ youarecurrent.com.

IDs and Jell-O shots Commentary by Danielle Wilson Our oldest turned 21 a few weeks ago. Can you believe it? I know! Based on my photo, you probaHUMOR bly put me at, what, 32? Maybe 33? Alas, I’m much closer to 50 than my still all-natural hair color might suggest. And though I thought I would feel old celebrating with the birthday boy down in Bloomington, or at the very least uncomfortable as I watched him legally throwback Jell-O shots, my concerns were entirely unfounded. I quite enjoyed seeing him as an adult and not feeling the need to “mother him.” His life, his choices. Did I internally debate cleaning his apartment, getting him a jacket, or telling him to eat something to absorb the alcohol? Of course! Once a mommy, always a mommy. But I was able to suppress every maternal instinct I had and marvel at the decent job we did in parenting him. As an added bonus, I was carded not once, but twice,

even as my husband, Doo, was waved through. I still have it, folks! And in some respects, so does Doo. He summoned his college-boy spirit and dove headfirst into the fray, matching his young apprentices drink for drink and crashing on an “if-thisthing-could-talk” couch overnight. At least, I think, that’s what happened. Per my usual, I bailed on the bar scene fairly early, once an intense game of “Sink the Biz” started and a doable plan to get Doo back to Indy was proposed. He has yet to return, by the way. But what could possibly go wrong? So, I guess I’m good with having older kids. And apparently, abandoning Doo at IU. Peace out.

Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. You may email her at info@youarecurrent.com.

Editor, As I read Ann Marie Shambaugh’s article in the Oct. 29 Current in Carmel on the approval of the 2020 Carmel city budget, I realized as taxpayers we should thank Hans Collins. It seems Mr. Collins was fortuitous enough at the Oct. 21 council meeting to question why the 2020 budget still had $2.4 million to pay Hamilton County in 2020 for the use of the county’s 911 dispatch center. Mr. Collins reminded everyone that’s what the 10 percent increase in local income taxes is supposed to cover. In the corporate sector we call this “double dipping.” Evidently the mayor previously stated the funds would be used to fund other public safety initiatives? Not sure what that means, but that doesn’t appear to be sound fiscal planning. That sounds more like a nice gravy train. It appears the 2020 budget would have started with a $2.4 million bonus. If this really is true, then someone needs to explain how precious taxpayer dollars are being managed. Derek Gryna, Carmel

Heavy period could signify bleeding disorder Commentary by Sweta Gupta It’s commonly believed that women and girls can’t have bleeding disorders. People often SCREENING think only boys and men experience compromised clotting (the body’s natural ability to stop bleeding). But women and girls can have bleeding disorders, and their first symptom could be heavier-than-normal menstrual bleeding, which can pose significant issues. If not addressed, an undiagnosed bleeding disorder could present a host of challenges in the event of an accident, surgical procedure, pregnancy or drug interaction. Heavy menstrual bleeding symptoms include: • Period lasting longer than seven days • Passing clots larger than the size of a quarter • Missing days of school or work due to bleeding

Carmel moms’ care packages turn into big business

Imagine your home, totally organized!

By Shelly Gattlieb news@currentincarmel.com

Custom Closets, Garage Cabinets, Home Offices, Pantries Laundries, Wall Beds, Hobby Rooms, Garage Flooring and more....

When Karen Melbert’s daughters left for college, her natural instinct was to help ENTREPRENEURS them destress with diversions and favorite snacks during final exam weeks and special holidays. Soon, multiple students were excited to see what would arrive in the next “Karen package.” That’s when Melbert realized she could turn the concept into a new business. Longtime friend and fellow Carmel resident Karen Lafnitzegger was the immediate choice for a partner. As soon as the idea was described, Lafnitzegger was on board. “You already know (your friends’) work ethic,” Lafnitzegger said. “They’re smart and creative and so you trust them, and that’s huge.” Working out of Melbert’s basement, the partners created HappyPak for college students and soon realized there was a larger customer base. Repeat customers, mostly women, began requesting boxes for different occasions with the same customized feel. No matter the circumstance, Melbert and Lafnitzegger wanted their products to fit the recipient’s preferences and inject humor. “When you take a theme, then your brain just explodes and you can come up with all of this fun, gimmicky stuff to put with it,” Melbert said.

The women started following trends in gifting, conducted a pilot study and increased their inventory. The business picked up online customers and grew organically. Although other boxed gift services are available, Melbert and Lafnitzegger aim for their detail-oriented appeal and thoughtful personalization to set HappyPak apart from the competition. Working with other area small businesses for products and printing services, they offer local items on a national scale. Customized boxes vary in price and have been given to a variety of people, from chemotherapy patients to transferring priests to new parents. Melbert and Lafnitzegger are collaboratively designing HappyPaks for the holidays, including hostess favors and corporate gifts. Learn more at HappyPak.com.

Carmel thespians tackle new play: ‘Cheerleaders vs. Aliens’ Nov. 14-16 By Mark Ambrogi mark@yoaurecurrent.com Carmel High School theater teacher Jim Peterson was looking for a different kind of play THEATER and found it. His students will perform “Cheerleaders vs. Aliens” by Rachel Bublitz Nov. 14 to 16 at CHS’s Studio Theater. Peterson, the director, said it’s not to be confused with “Aliens vs. Cheerleaders,” a completely different play. “I found this on an unpublished playwright site,” Peterson said. “When I contacted the playwright (Rachel Bublitz) and I told her I was interested in it, she sent me a copy of it, and I read through it. I was surprised at how well-written it was. It’s a good story. It sounds cheesy as heck, but we are having a lot of fun with it.” The play was originally written for and performed at a theater camp in Utah. Two groups staged it in Utah. The play was published by Pioneer Drama Service in September. “We are the first to do it anywhere else. It’s the Midwest premiere,” Peterson said. “I really like that it’s contemporary and it’s high school students. They are going through high school things that are universal. The kids recognize themselves in their characters. There is typecasting going on with some of them.” Peterson said the premise is aliens invade Earth to steal football players’ brain jelly. “The cheerleaders are the only ones with guts enough to step up to the aliens and defeat them,” Peterson said. “It’s with the help of an outsider named Gilda, who likes science fiction.”

Carmel High School’s “Cheerleaders vs. Aliens” has a cast of 20. (Submitted photo)

Senior Kelsey McShay plays the lead role of cheerleader Ali. “What I really like about the production is the use of all the technical elements and the fact that it is based in a school, so all of the actors can relate to it,” McShay said. “What I really like about my character is that she both fits the typical cheerleader stereotype but defies it as well.” McShay likes that she is able to shape her role. “It is incredibly fun to do a role that not many have performed before because it allows you as an actor to really play around with the character and develop it how I want to,” McShay said. “The biggest challenge to this role is being able to develop Ali’s character while playing off of the other cheerleaders to make sure they all have different personalities and quirks.” Junior Muriel Schafer plays Bea, a new girl in school who helps Gilda. “She seems a lot like me in her personality, so it’s easy to relate to her,” Schafer said. “She is very practical and straight-forward. She doesn’t

get easily freaked out by all the sci-fi stuff like the cheerleaders do.” Schafer said the character descriptions are minimal. “Every person can shape the character the way they want it to be, so that’s kind of cool,” said Schafer, who said it’s one of the larger roles she has had at CHS. Senior Hannah Smith plays the lead alien. “It’s a fun show to do because you are not restricted to reality,” Smith said. “Being the leader of the aliens is really fun. I’m able to create my own character based on clues from the script. It’s very reminiscent of the ‘80s sci-fi films.” The role is Smith’s first high school performance. Smith, who usually works with the technical crew for CHS plays and musicals, appeared in “Fools” with Carmel Apprentice Theatre in March. “It was wild, and now I want to go into acting,” she said. The performances are at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 and 15 and 2 and 7 p.m. Nov. 16. Tickets are available at ticketracker.com.

Students get ‘Footloose’ By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Joseph Sandy sees some of himself in Rev. Shaw Moore. The eighth-grader MUSICAL plays Moore in Camel Middle School’s production of “Getting to Know...Footloose the Musical” at 7 p.m. Nov. 15-16. “One thing that resonates with me is I’m a very stubborn individual and I’m really stuck in my ways, and that’s almost exactly like Shaw,” Sandy said. “I feel I fit the part very well. The best thing I like about Shaw is he is the one that changes the most throughout the story. In the beginning, he despises dancing. But in the end, he allows it.” Sam Tiek plays Ren McCormack, who moves to Utah from Chicago and wants to bring dancing to the town. “I like how he grows during the show,” Tiek said. “By the end of the show, he’s matured and knows what he wants in life.”

From left, Joseph Sandy, Ella Glowacki and Sam Tiek appear in the Carmel Middle School production of “Getting to Know... Footloose the Musical.” (Photo by Mark Ambrogi)

Ella Glowacki said her character supports the dancing and rebels against her father, Rev. Shaw Moore. “Ariel Moore is such a deep person,” Glowacki said. “She likes to act really confident. She knows what she is doing on the outside, but on the inside, she is having a hard time grieving the death of her brother, so she is really sad inside but doesn’t let anyone see that.” Tickets can be ordered online at carmelms.booktix.com.

The Shore Temple near Chennai, Indian (Photo by Don Knebel)

Shore Temple of India Commentary by Don Knebel The Shore Temple is one of the most visited sites in southern India. It may once have been TRAVEL a part of a much larger religious complex, now lost to the sea. In the first millennium A.D., Mamallapuram, about 40 miles south of the modern city of Chennai (once known as Madras), was one of two important ports along the Bay of Bengal. Beginning in the seventh century, the powerful and creative Pallava Dynasty, which conducted trade and diplomatic missions from Mamallapuram, began constructing a series of imposing religious structures near the port, the most famous being the Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots), carved from a single outcropping of granite. To the east of the Pancha Rathas, almost at water’s edge, is the so-called “Shore Temple,” built between 700 and 728 A.D. The Shore Temple is actually three temples erected on a single platform. All three are in the shape of a pyramid, erected from blocks of granite, making them among the oldest such structures in southern India. Two of

Of course, they were gonna try and kill me. Do not try and bend the spoon. Thor, GRAMMAR GUY you gotta try and bottleneck that portal. I could have used more than a thousand other movie quotes to illustrate the fact that the phrase “try and” is a fixture of popular usage. This begs the question: Does that make “try and” OK? We certainly live in a post-proper society. No longer do we dine in the parlor or take tea on a doily on a regular basis. Does that mean rules don’t apply anymore? Let’s pump the brakes for a second and examine “try and” and “try to.” Usually, people say “try and” when they should technically say “try to.” I’m going to try to fix my turntable. I’m going to try and fix my turntable. In these two examples, “try to” is considered standard usage, while “try and” is informal or idiomatic usage that means “try

to.” However, upon further examination, “try and” may communicate something different. If I “try and” fix my turntable, it implies that I will be successful in fixing it. In other contexts, “try and” implies irony and suggests certain failure. “I’d like to see you try and stop me, Batman!” I’ll go ahead and insert my caveat refrain: It’s best to avoid using “try and” in a formal context, unless you intend to use it in a literal sense. While filling out the form to nominate my writing on grammar usage for the Pulitzer Prize, opt for “try to,” as in: “Honeycutt will try to make grammar palatable through his use of attempted humor; whether he succeeds or not is up to what each reader finds chuckle-worthy.”

Pumpkin stain removal — A jack-o’-lantern set outside on a wood stool will most likely leave behind a moldy stain as it decomposes. To remove it, dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water and a squirt of toothpaste, then rub it on the stain in small circles until it lifts. Once the stain is gone, reapply wood polish.
