hatting it up with some of the world’s top political leaders while investigating hostage crises and drug use is all in a day’s work for Carmel native Tim Padgett. The 1980 Carmel High School grad is the Miami and Latin America bureau chief for Time magazine. In his 11 years with one of the nation’s top news magazines, Padgett has written about such issues as the Elian Gonzalez controversy and the 2000 presidential re-count in Florida. And he’s one of the few United States journalists to have interviewed Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. It’s a far cry from his days as features editor of the high school paper, The Hi-Lite. But Padgett, 45, credits CHS with giving him a solid foundation for his career. “It’s a very goal-oriented school,” he says, giving props to both the journalism and English departments. Padgett points to former English teachers Doug Estell and Michelle Satchwell and to journalism teacher and HiLite adviser Mark Shoup as mentors. “(Shoup) was the best introduction to journalism,” he said. “He had a knack for getting students enthused.” Padgett’s journalism career almost didn’t happen, though. He was a sophomore in 1978 when the high school football team won the state championship. He was the backup quarterback and all set to lead the Greyhounds the following year. But his first game out the next season, Padgett says, he threw two or three interceptions. “I think I spent the rest of the year on the bench.” It was a case of doors closing and windows opening. It allowed Padgett more time for writing. After graduation, he went on to major in English at Wabash College, where he served as editor of the student newspaper, The Bachelor. He earned his master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University in 1985 and, after a summer internship at the Chicago

In Chicago, that meant covering a lot of crime. Padgett says the crime beat was good for “cutting your teeth as a journalist.” He stayed with the Sun-Times three years before joining Newsweek’s Chicago bureau. In 1990, he moved to Mexico City to serve as Newsweek’s bureau chief. OUR TAKE It is our position that the significant investment of time made by scores of Conseco employees in support of the American Red Cross Chapter of Greater Indianapolis is a model to all. The folks at this fine local operation have contributed more than 10,000 man (and woman) hours to the benefit of food banks, disaster relief, education programs, and accounting and other services. Wow. That makes a difference. Interestingly, this company has been mostly private about this significant contribution to central Indiana. In the face of so much publicity that has been often critical of the company, its stock performance

and especially some of its former management, Conseco’s rank and file have been out helping others in need. Quietly serving their neighbors. Quietly making a difference. Thank you. Not unlike our friends at Conseco, Carmel often can be maligned in the larger public press. We have it too good. Our streets are just too clean. And, we don’t feel the pain of others. But the reality of it all is that we, citizens of Carmel, unceremoniously, and with little public relations, support charity and civic efforts across Indiana and wherever people are in need. Keep up the good work.

WE’RE STARTING TO SHOW It is our position that the steel beginning to rise over the Carmel City Center project is a welcome gift to us all this holiday season. Just this past week, passers-by on Range Line Road were greeted with a number of new cranes and welcomed above-grade construction. And even as steel work is reaching towards the heavens, the Performing Arts Center is digging into the cool central Indiana soil. Ground has been broken to set the footings for what will soon take shape as a 1,600 seat state-of-the-art theater – one of the most important in the United

States. Carmel is lucky. We are lucky. Our city is poised to become an important center for arts and music. And this project is only the start of it all. But this blessing merits significant ongoing effort. Mayor Jim Brainard is working to raise additional dollars to endow the Center and to top-off some of the finishes. We wish him luck. It takes significant imagination for donors to hear music coming from a rather frigid hole in the ground. As the structure springs forth, the tune will become clearer – we hope clear enough to elicit generosity and sustain the vision.

CONSIDER ORENTLICHER AS CARSON’S REPLACEMENT

ow that U.S. Rep. Julia Carson’s retirement is inevitable, I’m glad to see state Rep. David Orentlicher’s name bandied about as a possible replacement. Orentlicher has been my favorite state legislator practically from the moment he took office. And I’ve told him so every time I’ve met him. As Indiana’s only Jewish legislator, he rightly took offense when Andy a morning Statehouse prayer, under the direction of then-House Leader Brian Bosma, turned into a Southern gospel sing-a-long, praising Jesus by name, and blatantly violating the constitutional separation of church and state. As a practicing Christian, I can’t imagine how Orentlicher felt during the Bosma Tent Revival, but as a civil libertarian, I certainly share his sentiment. Anyway, rather than bowing to popular sentiment, Orentlicher challenged this constitutional violation, and won a judgment from a judge whose father was once the senior pastor at my church. Orentlicher is not the type to kowtow to popular sentiment when he believes popular sentiment is wrong or overreaching. I was initially disappointed when I learned Orentlicher was not among the legislators favoring an end to Indiana’s property taxes. But then I read his reasoning, and realized he was correct. His

YES, IT WAS OFFENSIVE

Editor: Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Absolutely yes, I am offended by Victoria’s Secret’s window displays. As a woman, mother, daughter, I am offended by the constant degradation of women portrayed as sex symbols only. I have boycotted them for a long time because of this. I long ago stopped walking my children past their store. I am so grateful to you for bringing this scandal out in public. I will contact Victoria’s Secret also. MORE TO WORRY ABOUT

Editor: If Lori Baxter and the other members of Concerned Mothers in Carmel have problems with what their children seeing in the Victoria’s Secret window displays, then there are a whole lot more things they should be protesting: clothing catalogs, public swimming pools, public beaches, day-time soap operas, even some prime-time sitcoms show the same or more. Why is it that they think their opinions,

thoughtful and careful reasoning had trumped my reactionary opinion. Following a presentation he gave at a meeting of the Hamilton County Democrat Club, he stated offhand that he was on his way to campaign door-to-door in Home Place. On the way home that night, I mentioned to my wife that I was glad I was not an elected official, as I would hate the campaigning element. But then I thought how lucky the residents of Home Place Ray were to have a representative who cares enough to actually meet them face-to-face. Julia Carson has served her constituents well. She certainly carries the persona of “one of us,” whereas Orentlicher comes across as more of a college professor, which of course he is. He is also a doctor and a lawyer, making him our state’s most degreed member. While I certainly respect former Congressman Andy Jacob’s endorsement of Julia Carson’s grandson, Andre, as her heir apparent, I don’t believe he is experienced enough yet to serve as a U.S. congressman. I believe the citizens of Indianapolis deserve a thoughtful, intelligent, caring legislator, such as David Orentlicher. Andy Ray is a manufacturer’s representative in Carmel. You can reach him at andy46032@mail. inct.net.

beliefs and “rights” outweigh anyone else’s? The window displays are not “pornography” and there is nothing “obscene, lewd, indecent or lascivious” about the window displays. It they think it is, then they should exercise their rights to shop someplace else and quit trying to rule the world and everyone around them. I haven’t shopped there in the past, but if that’s what it takes to shut down Baxter’s personal brand of censorship, I’ll shop there in the future. Verlin Abbott 46032

DISAGREES WITH COLUMN

Editor: As a current member of the Carmel Clay Schools redistricting committee, I feel compelled to respond to the comments printed in Danielle Wilson’s column. I would like to go on record by saying that the views of that one anonymous committee member do not, in any way, reflect my feelings. From the beginning, communication by the school administration was very clear about the purpose of this committee ... redistricting. I never believed that this committee would be responsible for debating the need for redistricting. Dr. Under-

FROM THE BACKSHOP BUSHED AND HILLARIED AT ONCE! OK, seriously. We’re not making this up. Our president unwittingly gave a boost to this nation being Hillaried, when he told a talking head, “No question. There is no question that Sen. Clinton understands pressure better than any of the candidates, you know, in the race because she lived in the White House and sees it first — could see it first-hand.” The genius also went on to say Hillary “understands the klieg lights,” Could we say the same thing about Socks, Hil and Bill’s kitty? Is Socks equipped to be Secretary of State, given the feline’s exposure to “the klieg lights?” Perhaps political pundit Dick Morris put it best, writing, “Bush lent credence to Hillary’s campaign assertion that she could ‘hit the ground running’ if she were elected president.” Please, tell us this didn’t happen. Just when our great nation seems to be figuring out her synthetic, equivocal and unnatural (or, is it?) campaigning, our chief executive runs off at the mouth. *** Yet another way the government is attempting to get into our pockets: The Indiana Department of Natural Resources first announced fees for Indiana State Parks and Reservoirs would be going up, effective Jan. 1. Of course! Then, two days later, a reversal sailed across the transom: “The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of State Parks and Reservoirs says it will not implement three minor fee increases as previously announced. Officials say it was determined that several of the increases were not necessary.” Why

The old-fashioned way is to snail mail it wood and Mr. Dillon were very clear about the duties of the committee from the earliest communications. I also disagree that the group is “in chaos.” That simply is not true. We have spent time debating the pros and cons of shifting certain neighborhoods in order to allow growth in schools, which are facing overcrowding and more fully utilize the schools which have declining enrollment. Words cannot express how disappointed I am that a committee member has chosen to share this very preliminary information when as a group we agreed not to do so. In addition to causing concern and anxiety where it may be completely unnecessary, this individual has also made the job of the rest of the committee that much more difficult. I worry that publicity stunts such as this will jeopardize the use of parent committees in the future. ... Dr. Underwood has stated her continued support

Steve Greenberg & Brian Kelly did they try to put it on us in the first place? Fellow citizens, this is a reminder to fight ridiculous government encroachment on your finances at every turn. *** The response to our invitation to comment on the Victoria’s Secret dustup has been overwhelming. The hundreds of phone calls and emails (some of which are on this page; the rest of which are on our Web site, currentincarmel. com) have been thought-provoking and, in many cases, downright passionate. Regardless of which side you’re on, know this: Carmel cares. We care, too. While the poses “created” for the mannequins made even us blush, the move to put them in PJs was a marketing gaffe. As we understand it, from a legal standpoint, V.S. can do within reason what it wants to do. Which is good. But sometimes it comes down to being a good corporate citizen. Is it worth the effort? Perhaps. Who are we to say what offends one group and not another? And above all else, as you’ve read here before, let the free market reign.

COMMUNITY FOR THE RECORD

Four members of the Carmel Clay Public Library Board of Trustees recently received Level One recognition through their participation in the Indiana Library Trustee Association’s LINK Recognition Program. James Garretson, James Hehner, Jack Stafford and William Wiebenga earned the required number of points to reach this level. Along with this recognition, the library board has qualiďŹ ed as an Outstanding Board because the majority of its members has reached Level One. Board member Jane Herndon earned Level One status in 2006. The LINK program is designed to encour-

age individual board members and entire library boards to participate in continuing education to enhance their effectiveness. Through conference programs and online learning opportunities in areas such as policy governance, laws and liability, effective director and staff relationships, budgeting, strategic planning, and local and state-level advocacy, trustees broaden their knowledge base and enhance their leadership skills. “I am proud of our board for the dedicated effort that led to this well deserved recognition, said Library Director Wendy Phillips. “It demonstrates their commitment to service on behalf of the library and the community.

DEBATER QUALIFIES: Clay Middle School eighth-grader Maggie Zhang has qualified for membership in the National Junior Forensics League. Speech coach Sylvia Hyde, who teaches French at the school, said Zhang is the first student to earn this honor at Clay. This is the first year the school has fielded a competitive team. This lifelong membership, Zhang Hyde said, allows students to accumulate points for speaking in public and entering speech and debate competitions. Members earn ranks of merit through high school, college and their professional careers.

kids, but I have to say that the motivation to raise decent sons was not as much a priority as raising decent, ambitious sons. Therein lies the contradiction. Somehow our society allows for dads to sit on the back burner without even a hope of them ever hearing their children sing. I was fortunate. My dad decided he would participate effectively, emotionally and enthusiastically in the lives of his children, and he knew he had to come equipped with his own song book. So dads, this column is dedicated to you! Work on not cheating yourself out of a glorious symphony. Realize how important

hen I was a little girl, Mom told me a story of the father bird and how it made her sad. She compared all dads with father birds. She went on to explain that the father bird seldom hears his babies sing. When the birds are singing, father bird is away from the nest gathering food; and when the father is in the nest, they are being fed, unable to sing. Having full tummies, they would go to sleep without as much as a chirp for the father bird to hear. To tell you the truth, it made me Becky Kapsalis Ask YiaYia a little sad, too. It saddens me to think that, perhaps, dads seldom hear their children singing Understandably, dads are busy providing for their families. In fact, dads are raised to believe they need to be breadwinners, successful, strong, intelligent and confident. In retrospect, I know my husband and I raised our sons differently than we raised our daughter. My husband is a great dad to all his

DOCTOR DELIVERS BOOK: Carmel area orthopedic physician David Porter of Methodist Sports Medicine / The Orthopedic Specialists has released a book, “Baxter’s The Foot and Ankle in Sport.” It discusses sports-related injuries of the foot and ankle and how these injuries can Porter be devastating to an athletes’ performance. It provides physicians and their patients with guidance in getting back to peak physical condition. It’s $179, and available at http://www.elsevier.com/wps/ find/bookdescription.print/710268/ description ALLIED MOVES IN: Allied Solutions held a ribbon cutting on Dec. 1 for its new Carmel headquarters at 1320 City Center Drive, after having outgrown its former locations in Westfield and Carmel. The new facility, developed by Panattoni Development Co., has more than 45,000 square feet, the entire third floor of a 138,500-square-foot building on the northeast corner of City Center Drive and Pennsylvania Street in Carmel. TRY THESE ‘LOSERS’: Harry Domash of moneycentral.msn.com gives his Comeback Kids, which are beaten-down stocks likely to recover in the coming year. They are Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearns, Starbucks, Capital One Financial, Kohl’s, Home Depot, Forest Laboratories and Morgan Stanley.

INTERNET IS TAKING THE INTERMEDIARY ROLE

ith another baby on the way, I found myself in need of a new vehicle – something bigger and more accommodating. To begin my purchase process, I decided to do some online research. In a matter of minutes, I had the best recommendations for a vehicle that would fit my demands, including the budget. Knowing that my wife would completely undermine my decision-making prowess, I concluded the only solution was to give her the car as a gift. That would certainly eliminate all the discussion and streamline the David Cain process. With this On Marketing new-found liberation in tow, it was off to the dealer to retrieve my last piece of the buying puzzle. I still needed the details on financing, leasing and purchase options – information on how to fund and acquire the vehicle. And that required the assistance of a real live person. Everything else I already knew – who offered the vehicle locally, options, what color, what year, the approximate cost, and finally what other owners

of the car thought of the vehicle. When I arrived at the dealer, I was greeted by a cheery salesperson not 10 steps into the showroom. He asked me what I was interested in, and I replied with exact precision. I was escorted to a small desk where he began asking me questions that seemed redundant. I interrupted and asked about the missing details I needed to wrap up my decision, and he surprised me with, “When do you plan to buy this car?” “I had hoped today; preferably now,” I replied. And for the biggest surprise, he said, “That’s not possible; you haven’t even driven one.” My new sales friend was an intermediary for the dealership, and he wasn’t offering much value to my current need. Instead of taking a consulting role where he could help me navigate through a series of my questions (helping me buy a car), he wanted to follow his pattern for how to sell me a vehicle. He was an intermediary. An intermediary is a person in the middle – a person who represents one party to the transaction (usually the seller) and talks to the other party (buyer). Sometimes legally defined as agents or brokers, an intermediary is a broader, more generic term. The role of the Internet is shaping up to be the spoiler for that occupation. The Internet provides one of the most con-

venient methods for a buyer to be directly linked to the seller without

the middleman. If you are in the middle, think about your future. You have to be adding value and not just providing information or making buyers go back to the beginning of the process. The days of just representing the information people want to know are ending, because this information is available online. As “disintermediation” continues, it will become more important to provide original thinking that adds value. By John Pacilio, RE/MAX Ability Plus

MY OPINION:

$300K To Buy

• Age: Built in 2006 • Location: Southeast corner of Main Street and Range Line Road. • Type: Commercial retail • Neighborhood: The Arts & Design District • Square footage: 904 • Rooms: Open air concept, stained concrete floors, and tall ceilings in a new, 3-level, all brick building. Good potential for a small café, restaurant, pub or retail shop. • Strengths: Located in the heart of Carmel’s Arts & Design District among premier art galleries, restaurants, boutiques and a diverse variety of specialty retail stores. This is one of the most recognizable and publicized buildings in Carmel.

• Challenges: Tenants here will be held to a fairly small footprint in an area that is in the beginning stage of a commercial boom. • The lease on this property would be $2,000 a month.

GO FOR THE GUAC: When stress has you wanting a highfat, creamy treat, try some homemade guacamole. The thick, rich texture can satisfy your craving and reduce those frantic feelings. Plus, the monounsaturated fat and potassium can lower blood pressure. Just half an avocado offers 487 mgs of potassium, more than you’ll get from a medium-size banana. vitamin A, which your efficient Holy Temple coverts into beta-carotene. A study published in the September 2003 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, reviewed lifestyle data from 63,257 adults in Shanghi, China. Those eating the most yellow-orange foods were found to have a 37 percent lower risk of lung cancer. Kansas State researchers made a surprise discovery: a common carcinogen in ciggy butt smoke, benzo (a) pyrene, actually encourages vitamin A deficiency. Next growing season, politely accept your neighbor’s generous gift of health and, just like grandma, store them in the cool root cellar, along with the pickles, onions, pumpkins, small potatoes and sweet yams. Nothing’s more satisfying in the late, gray, winter than a sweet, steaming bowl of properly prepared squash; unless, of course, it’s two tickets to the Caribbean.

PUSH THE PUSHUPS: To build core musculature and upper-body strength, do more pushups. are relatives of the melon, pumpkin and the cucumber. My wife, Sandi, loves her squash baked with Smart Balance and maple syrup. I prefer to steam peeled and cubed butternut squash, mash them like potatoes and add orange juice, a pinch of sea salt, cracked pepper, and Madras curry. Some of you make squash soup, but don’t bastardize it with heavy cream. Spices that go well with squash are coriander, allspice, and curry. It tastes sweet when eaten raw. The name “squash” comes from the Algonquin word “askutasquash,” which means “eaten raw.” Squash is different than a peel-and-eat banana. Perhaps that’s why so many avoid it. It’s not easy to handle the sometime bulky, awkward, football or convoluted shape. Deal with it, Chiquita, because the benefits of eating nutrient-dense squash far outweigh the effort. STOP TURKEY NECK: To aid in your fight against aging, treat the skin of your neck and chest as carefully as you do your face. Every day, apply creams with antioxidants like vitamins A and C. RICKETS MAKES COMEBACK: Too little milk, sunshine and exercise among children are leading to rickets, the soft-bone scourge of the 19th century. Even worse, bone specialists say millions of healthy children in the U.S. are not building as much strong bone as they should, leaving them more vulnerable to osteoporosis. HEALTH WATCH GETTING UP TO SPEED: They say that slow and steady wins the race. But the cardiovascular key to fat burning is using interval training workouts — workouts that alternate high-intensity levels with lower-intensity effort. That formula keeps your body burning calories long after you’ve stopped working out. Interval training mimics sports — startand-stop motions with periods of sprinting or close-to-sprinting speeds followed by light jogging or rest. You can use interval training workouts any way you want — running, cycling, swimming, on elliptical trainers, even walking if you alternate a speed walk and slow walk. You can also vary the intensity levels in different combinations. — menshealth.com

or sagging at the seams, chances are slapping a little yoga on it will help make it right. In fact, there’s a burgeoning movement called Yoga Therapy, in which teachers “prescribe” different poses, modifications of the standard poses, and customized sequences for clients with specific ailments and injuries. Recent studies have shown that yoga can increase lung capacity and reduce asthma attacks, help manage diabetes, and relieve lower back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. Of course you still need your doctor; if you have injuries, or are menstruating or pregnant, be sure to do your yoga with a qualified teacher.

A good cleanup will get the computer running like it was new. A bad cleanup will typically cost you less money and your data may be gone. The last hint is really more of a plea. Make sure you are backing up your data. If you have data on your computer that you can not afford to loose (pictures, finances, school work) make sure you have a backup drive and are using it. Though we can usually get data back from a crashed drive using a data recovery lab, it is much cheaper and faster to get your data back from a back-up hard drive. Happy Holidays

BLUEPRINT FOR IMPROVEMENT By Larry Greene, Case Handyman & Remodeling Question: We would like to add a wine cellar to the unfinished part of our basement. How hard is this to do on our own? Do we need a specialized contractor? Answer: Wine cellars can be complicated and it’s a good idea to hire a remodeling contractor experienced with wine storage. There are generally three types of wine storage solutions: 1) an under-counter or standalone wine refrigerator, 2) a walk-in wine vault, or 3) a customized wine room. A dedicated wine room needs to be built to withstand the three enemies of wine: heat, light and vibration. 1. Temperature and humidity controls: The room must be completely encapsulated and insulated on the walls and ceilings and must include a vapor barrier. A specialized cooling unit must be installed to keep the temperature at a constant 55 to 60 degrees. The best type of cooling unit depends on the size and location of the room and your budget. 2. Racking and millwork: Wine racking and custom millwork represents one of the largest cost items in a wine room. Wood

wine racks are the most popular and can be custom-made by a carpenter or purchased from a specialty supplier. 3. Room size and design: The size of a wine room is usually determined based on the number of bottles you need to store. This can range from a small closet to a large room housing thousands of bottles. Use an experienced designer. 4. Windows and doors: You will need insulated doors and windows. The options range from a basic exterior door to decorative specialty doors. Windows in the door and a display window let you look at the beauty of the room when it’s finished. 5. Overall room decor: Most wine rooms in basements have tile flooring and stone or wood accents. Functional and decorative display lighting is critical. Make sure the electrician installs an automatic timer on all lights in case you forget to turn them off. As a special touch, consider including a tasting table to uncork a special bottle and enjoy the ambiance of the room. Have a remodeling question? Wear no clothing emblazoned with opinions or exhortations. — esquire.com FASHIONABLY LATE? You don’t want to be early unless you’ve been invited to help prepare for or set up a party. If it’s a sit-down dinner or brunch, good manners require you to show up right on time. If it’s an appetizer or cocktail party planned for two or three hours, it’s fine to arrive any time within the first hour, or later if cleared with the host. — lifestyle.msn.com DON’T GET TOO SEXY: Strappy, see-through, extra-tight or downright sleazy styles won’t ever do your career any favors, regardless of your career path. Many fashion spreads will trumpet high slits, plunging necklines, sheer and a plethora of inappropriate looks in the name of “femininity.” But sexy doesn’t cut it for 9 to 5. Ever. — fashion.about.com

I

A POLITICALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY INCORRECT CHRISTMAS!

love this time of year, when interior design heads for the great outdoors. My hat goes off to my neighbors on Brookshire Parkway who out-do themselves year after year and illuminate my safe and festive passage home throughout the month of December. I set aside the Sunday after Thanksgiving to decorate my store windows with a “designer” tree and white lights buried in our “designer” snow. Home from college for the holiday, my oldest son agreed to tackle the task. He had heard of a fabulous new light and wanted to bring my level of Vicky Earley Christmas decorating Decor awareness into the age of technology. My son introduced me to the Christmas Brilliance Diamond-Cut Crystal Sparkle LED light. The box promised a clean, brilliant white light. Bulbs were cut with facets, hence the Diamond name. There was an environmental bonus of a 90 percent energy savings with this new generation of Christmas lights. These new lights were destined to escort my storefront into the New Year with a progressive techno-

sparkle. My son did a fabulous job positioning the lights in each and every window, thus ensuring their visibility from the street. He puffed up the fiberfill that we use to give a snowy illusion like a veteran holiday decorator. It was still daylight when his decorating efforts were complete and a Colts game beckoned so he missed the moment, at twilight, when the street lights, Christmas lights and all other illuminations came to life. Those of us still busy with tasks at hand realized that darkness had fallen and rushed outside to see the magic of our Christmas lights. Not a word was uttered. No one wanted to go first. There was something wrong ... very, very, very wrong. No one on that dark street corner could put it into words. It really required pondering and a few other trips to the street to reconsider. The problem with the Christmas Brilliance Diamond-Cut Crystal Sparkle lights was that the glow was a steely gray. There was no confusing it with blue or white ... it was gray. LED Christmas bulbs use light emitting diodes rather than the traditional incandescence, so LED light just sits there. It doesn’t do anything.

My lights didn’t radiate. They didn’t twinkle and they didn’t warm the cockles of my holiday heart. The lights in my store windows were cold and gray ... and scary. If you drive by my store windows today, you will see that those LED lights have been replaced by the familiar miniature white lights that have been a holiday decorating mainstay for years. I often fall on the side of “green” in design choices. Christmas 2007, however, is the year that I refuse to be politically, socially or environmentally correct. I might change my mind in future years but for now, my use of the steely LED lights will remain on crossing signs and headlights. The recently renovated World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery, 40 W. Main St., has been showing children’s artwork since January 1998. In the first year, 770 children were represented in the series of month-long exhibitions, according to Doreen Squire Ficara, the museum’s director. “Every elementary school used to be represented once a year, but now they are here once every 13 or 14 months,” Squire Ficara said. “We’re very popular, and we’re already scheduled for exhibitions through 2009.” In 2007, “way over 3,000” children have had their works on display there, partly because there are more elementary schools in

FOR FAMILIES: The family friendly production of “A Year With Frog and Toad,” presented by Actors Theatre of Indiana, will be Friday through Dec. 23 at Pike Performing Arts Center, 6701 Zionsville Road, Indianapolis. Shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and seniors and $10 for children and may be purchased by either calling the Pike Box Office at 216.5455 or online at www.pikepac.org.

Last Sunday’s opening “gala” wasn’t Carmel’s most elegant. But the punch-andcookies affair was certainly one of the city’s most enthusiastically attended art events this season. Works of art in various media by students in Angie Crider’s Smoky Row Elementary School art classes were unveiled at the World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery. The blustery weather didn’t put a damper on the parade of students, their siblings and parents who braved a wet Sunday afternoon in Old Town to celebrate their artistic achievements. The reaction of 11-year-old Hallie Stallings, who has two works in the show, was typical of the talented kids on hand. “I am proud,” Stallings said about her picture of pumpkins and a study of shadows and highlights being selected for the show. “And kind of surprised. This is the first time I’ve been chosen.” Because this is her last year in elementary school, it’s especially meaningful, according to the fifth-grader’s mother, Susan Stallings, who recorded the experience on videotape. Grant Gold, 8, a third-grader in Mrs. Crider’s art class, was equally tickled to have a work on display, though he was an old hand at the proceedings because he contributed a work of art to last year’s exhibit as well. This year’s selection was a folded-paper image of a scary old man.

Carmel and partly due to more open hours at the little gallery, which is staffed by community volunteers. Each student with work on display receives a certificate from the Carmel Arts Council saluting their achievement. The works hanging this month include an Oriental image with a haiku composed by third-grader Chloe Kennedy, 7. Her mother, Karen Kennedy, said that Chloe was especially excited to be selected because her older brother was a participant last year. For Nicole Steinhardt, 10, having her abstract turtle image selected was a thrill. “I love art,” the fourth-grader said, who has also taken art classes at Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI. “Art class stretches your artistic ability and imagination.”

Where he eats: Taste Cafe What he eats there: Their cheddar biscuits and gravy and chocolate pecan torte. They have good omelets and great coffee. What he likes about Taste Cafe: It’s a really cool, upscale cafe with an awesome atmosphere. It’s upscale but affordable. The food is really good. It’s the perfect example of a small, very well-done private restaurant. I’ve never liked biscuits and gravy until I went there and had their biscuits and gravy.

Phone: 580.0087 Hours: Noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. lunch and 4 to 9:30 dinner Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. lunch and 4 to 10:30 p.m. dinner Friday, noon to 10:30 p.m. Saturday

Started in 1991 by Don and Tom Main, there are now six Puccini’s Smiling Teeth locations in the Indianapolis area. The Carmel location has been there at least 14 years, kitchen manager Scott Groves said. There are also five other Puccini’s locations in Indiana and Kentucky. Puccini’s serves pizza and pasta, following recipes developed by the Mains, Groves said. The most popular pizzas are the Ultimate Warrior, which is a supremetype pizza, and the Campfire Pizza, which has onion marmalade. All the food is made from scratch. Groves said Puccini’s is popular because it’s a “family place that doesn’t do ads on TV.” Its business is word-of-mouth, Groves said. The restaurant does an equal amount of both delivery and eat-in business.
