Surviving the Holidays When All is Not Merry By Tracy Line For Current In Carmel

Cousin Ralph drinks too much. For some, the word party is taken just a little too literally. No one wants a bad situation; as a party host it’s a good idea to be conscious of how much liquor is being consumed by your guests. Even more important is to know what you are liable for should anything happen. John D. Walls, of J.D. Walls and Associates, states that social host liability varies from state to state. “Indiana does have a statute that would impart liability on a social host in certain circumstances” says Walls. Walls says if a host serves alcohol to someone who is intoxicated, they can be held responsible for that person’s actions once they leave the home. In the case of an accident, a claim of negligence can be brought forth and a jury would decide liability. The best defense is to avoid any chance for trouble. Call a cab or offer to drive a guest home if he’s overdone it.

‘Tis the season: not only for making merry but also for fighting traffic, hosting ho-hum parties and celebrating with none other than family; the people we love, but don’t always love to be with. Ho, Ho, Ho… Relax. There’s a reason some people actually enjoy the holiday season. It’s all about having good strategy. Knowing what to do when faced with those not-sopleasant situations can make for happier holiday memories. We’ve polled some local experts, and have the answers you need to make your holiday season shine.

What to do when…

A family falling-out divides your dinner table. Hosting the holiday is one thing; doing so when the family is at odds is another. What’s the best way to maintain the peace at your next gathering? “Think about how you might talk to family members ahead of time” says Dr. Donna Lazarick, a local psychologist. Lazarick suggests letting relatives know in advance what you expect of them. Gently reminding your guests that the day is meant to be a joyous one may go a long way toward preventing an ugly outburst. You can also prepare yourself. Often times, says Lazarick, family upsets are about the same old thing. Your sister-in-law makes jabs about your parenting. Uncle Ed makes offcolor comments that offend Grandma Rose. Think ahead about what you’ll do when such scenarios happen. Spend a moment planning the seating arrangements for the dinner table. Figure out how you’ll redirect the conversation should things become tense. Your best response, says Betty Jo Trakimas, a Carmel-based etiquette consultant, is one with a little compassion. “In our stress-filled society we all tend to walk around with our defenses on our shoulders” says Trakimas. We’re much better off to respond with understand-

ing instead of reacting with anger. Trakimas urges everyone to be patient with their families. And if conflict arises, stay out of it. “Do not feed into a potentially volatile situation.”

You need gifts, and fast! We’ve all been there: Just when you think you’re done shopping, you discover yet another distant relative will be at your holiday celebration. Worse yet, finding a gift will be difficult as you know more about your neighbor’s dog than you do him. What’s your best last-minute shopping strategy? Heather Pirowski, coowner of Lucky Lou in Carmel, suggests giving a gift that is personalized. “Anything with their name [or initial] on it, like stationary or note cards, definitely makes a different and unique gift,” says Pirowski. A monogrammed gift shows you care

and can be done for just about anyone. Another idea, adds Pirowski, is to “buy in multiples” when you shop. If you see something you like, buy an extra for those last-minute situations that almost always come up. Pirowski recommends staying away from seasonal items, “This way, if you don’t use it during the holidays, you can give it away later in the year, on another occasion.” With a few gifts such as candles, note cards or a bottle of wine stored away, you’ll always be ready for the last minute guest. If you do find yourself empty-handed when receiving a gift, don’t sweat it, says Trakimis. Instead, be gracious. Look your giver straight in the eye and thank them. Sincerity (not fumbling around with lame explanations) is the key, says Trakimas. Later you can send a note or make a phone call to further express your gratitude.

It’s late but nobody’s leaving. There’s nothing like a little holiday party to make your season sparkle. But when it’s over, it’s over; but not everyone gets this. How can you get guests to leave without being rude? “Be direct” says Lazarick; kindly let people know it’s time to go. Trakimas agrees, noting that many people just haven’t been taught proper etiquette. Both suggest a party host stand up, thank their guests for coming and suggest everyone get together again soon. That’s a message everybody will get.

While most divorce decrees specify custody arrangements for the holidays, ex-spouses aren’t always cooperative. How to proceed? With care, says Trakimas. Parents need to be considerate of their children’s feelings. If your holiday schedule needs adjusting, try to work it out in advance, and do so without any yelling and screaming. Walls concurs. “The key component to remember is that parental bickering is not helpful, nor is it appropriate for the children.” Be willing to compromise and your ex might be more accommodating. If communicating with an ex is impossible, Lazarick suggests utilizing a Parent Coordinator who can mediate difficult situations. If an ex repeatedly fails to follow the parenting time schedule, Walls notes that you may want to consider filing a request for a contempt hearing. Be kind, put your own grievances aside, and hopefully it will never come to that. However you celebrate, have a strategy in place. Doing so will make those not-so-merry moments that much brighter! OUR TAKE It is our position that City Hall’s announcement of the contracting of 11 more bronze sculptures from American artist J. Seward Johnson is a natural continuation of a plan laid out by city leaders some years ago – namely, to place high quality fine art in the public domain throughout our emerging Arts & Design District. Ostensibly the plan is to build a collection of the highly regarded works to act both as an attraction to visit the district and as an encouragement to all of us to get out of our cars and walk around a bit. We believe that the cost (just under $1

million with discount and customization) will be more than offset by earned media from the collection (like Chicago’s cows, etc.). Some question whether any government entity should be involved in promoting art at all. Since ancient times, governments have used public spaces and art as a way to create a sense of community and place. Even our forefathers planned the use of federal architecture and art to bolster the creation of a fledgling nation. Like all art, take a look and form your own thoughts: (www.SewardJohnson.com). We look forward to the discourse.

IT’S UP TO THE SHOPPERS Editor: Yes, the window is not something that I’d walk my three sons past. I agree with Susan Poe (letter to the editor on Dec. 11) concerning the degradation of women. However, if we looked at the statistics the majority of Victoria’s Secret shoppers are women. It’s those shoppers who’ll make the biggest difference as to how the store markets their products. Dusty Vignes 46032 DISCRETION IS NEEDED Editor: I agree that the retailer should use a bit more discretion in their store displays. Inside the store, out of view of passers-by, sure, do what they would like. In the front window as big as life (literally!) and a Christian, I am speaking to the complaining moms and organizations who oppose the windows of Victoria’s Secret with the barely dressed women (AKA: sexy momma). Maybe they should shop in the store once in a while. It might make their own marriages and, therefore family lives, improved and probably happier for all involved :). Get a life and get over yourselves; make time for sex with your husband instead of complaining. Amen and praise to sexy moms everywhere. Name withheld 46033 WHERE ARE THE VALUES? Editor: I am also very offended by the window displays at Victoria Secrets as well as Hollister’s. My children and I walk on the other side of the street whenever possible and we do look the other way. I do boycott those stores in particular and do not believe that they share the same family values as this community. If Carmel has a law on the books that they cannot enforce, then they may as well repeal the law. It is a shame that we no longer have the liberty to control the moral atmosphere of our community. HIGH-FIVE THE GUV! Stop the presses! Saddam’s teeth must be chattering! Hell actually HAS frozen over! We know this is true, because we’ve learned of a politician’s plan to cut spending. Really! We’re going to state it again, just in case you think you read it wrong: A politician has ordered his state agencies to CUT spending by 5 percent. Lucky for us that politician is Mitch Daniels. Although we don’t agree with everything he’s done — and it’s a shame it took a projected revenue shortfall to spur this decision instead of just admitting spending is out of control — we still admire his willingness to make some tough decisions. To suggest spending cuts, normally anathema to any politician of any party, deserves a vigorous high-ďŹ ve from Carmel’s Best Weekly Newspaper™. As we’ve stated in this space several times before: It’s the spending, stupid. Which reminds us: Adios, Bart! *** Elsewhere in these pages, you’ll read a news account of how Sally Shapiro has been removed from Carmel/Clay Parks & Recreation and Carmel/Clay Planning Commission directorships. We’re excusing Steve from this portion of the Backshop (because he broke

Steve Greenberg & Brian Kelly and wrote the story), so Brian takes over as a solo act here (plug your ears!). It is patented horse hockey that someone who has given more than the last eight years of her life to public service — a lot of it at the expense of family time, because she cares about parks and development — would be Hillaried by her peers (you know who you are), including her successor. Many have suggested, “It’s backroom Carmel politics. Allow me to add: “at it’s most disgusting. Shapiro, who is one smart cookie, is the embodiment of this: No good deed goes unpunished. Shame on the gutless who ganged up on her for asking questions and challenging bids and expenses (read: protecting the taxpayers). And as we’re fond of saying here, Carmel (and Clay Township), we’re getting exactly what we deserve. Sickeningly pathetic.

from your husband’s, and then creating a new one unique to you and your kids. For example, we’ve kept my husband’s reading of “The Night Before Christmas” and my crazy way of tearing open presents. We haven’t figured out one just for us yet, but we’re dabbling with the idea of an annual FFHO (Forced Family Holiday Outing) to see “A Christmas Carol” or “The Polar Express.” Now if you’re both being stubborn, immature crybabies (like I was as a newlywed), you can always alternate years that you practice certain traditions. One year he can pick the expensive Frasier fir, the next year you get the cheapo “Charlie Brown” white pine. That’s the only solution we’ve found that solves our ongoing tinsel debate. Remember that just as your family will grow and change, so will your holiday traditions. And that’s OK. (I’m giving my kids two more years and then I expect some highquality Christmas Eve theater!). The important thing is being with your loved ones and making memories your children will cherish (and fight for) once they’re on their own. Have a safe and happy holiday! Peace out. KESTNER IS CARMEL’S MOST VALUABLE VOLUNTEER

I

have fond memories of taking the Worrell family to the Carmel Schwinn store to pick out new bikes so we could ride around Carmel together. It was like stepping back in time, as the proprietor of the local institution was also the person making sure I understood every detail about brakes, frame construction and dirt vs. road tires. Little did I know at the time, that the man helping me load my shiny new bikes in the back of my mini-van would turn out to be one of the key people responsible for the luxury I feel lucky Jeff Worrell to enjoy called the CarmelCan! Monon Trail. Last week, the Carmel Chamber of Commerce recognized Nick Kestner as the Most Valuable Volunteer in

our community at their annual awards luncheon. The MV2 award celebrates outstanding volunteer contributions in our community. Nick Kestner’s celebraNick Kestner tion should last a very long time, because his list of accomplishments is extensive. A man known for avoiding the credit, he graciously accepted the award with all in attendance standing on their feet, hands vigorously clapping. True to his character, just 15 minutes after the luncheon concluded, he was back to volunteering, giving his expertise to a committee working on another project that citizens will appreciate, but most likely will never know Nick had a hand in guiding. In the audience that day were not only his peers from the business community, but a crowd of Carmel Rotarians beaming with pride that one of their own was humbly accepting recognition long overdue. Last year’s winner, Ron Carter, a Carmel Rotarian himself,

properly showed his genuine admiration as he passed the traveling trophy to the 7th recipient to have his name engraved with honor. Many groups and organizations have benefitted from the wisdom, time and energy of Nick Kestner. Although Nick will always point to others for the magnificent park system we enjoy today, he was on the founding board that got things started. He was president of the Central Park Building Corporation and helped start the movement promoting multi-use paths. In my opinion, his most famous legacy is the 10-person bike he built, seen annually in the July Fourth parade. From his many simple efforts to the very complicated and visionary plans of action that he has implemented, the Kestner catalog of community gifts will never go out of print. I am thankful Nick Kestner made a difference in the place he calls home. Jeff Worrell is a local business owner. He recognizes volunteers on “Connecting with Carmel” on Cable Channel 16. My husband’s Christmas was slightly different, which I quickly discovered the year we were married. Though I didn’t think it would bother me being away from my parents and sisters, by the end of Christmas Eve night, I was bawling in an upstairs bedroom and blaming the Wilsons for the worst Christmas ever. They’d done everything wrong! Roast beef instead of turkey; chocolate peau-decrèmes instead of English Christmas fruit cake; no presents at all; and to my horror, no family skit! Just a stupid reading of “The Night Before Christmas” while everyone sipped pretentious brandy Alexanders. The next morning? Even worse. Nobody arose until after 10 and the presents took five hours to open! What was the matter with these people? Who had I married? I want my mommy! (Unfortunately, that’s exactly how I acted too. So embarrassing!) If they hadn’t had a live tree with the Chernobyl lights just like the ones I’d grown up with, I’m certain we’d be divorced. (Of course, if I hadn’t birthed them four grandbabies, they may have never forgiven me!) So how do you meld two beloved traditions into one that suits your own family? Very carefully, to be sure, and with as much understanding and patience as you can muster. It’s all about compromise. Try maintaining one thing from your past and one

stablishing holiday traditions is one of those frustrating processes that can often push the limits of marital compromise. Christmas in particular can be a nasty experience when both parties have different expectations of what the holiday should (and should not) entail. For example, my family always celebrated Christmas Eve at our house with my father’s side, complete with gifts and a “show” put on by me and my sisters (Mom made us perform the nativity or sing carols when we were young, but Danielle eventually it evolved Wilson into each of us reenacting our favorite movie scenes, complete with costumes and musical scores. 1992’s “Silence of the Lambs” number has yet to be topped!) We had a live tree covered in silver tinsel and those enormous, fire-starting colored lights. Christmas morning was just sheer chaos. Five girls all unwrapping gifts simultaneously at 6:05 a.m. followed by the inevitable “She got prettier clothes”; “This doesn’t fit me!”; “I hate this dress!” (No wonder my parents dragged us to the early Mass — free wine!) We loved it! Around noon we’d head to my grandmother’s house and celebrate with my mom’s side. More food, more presents, more booze. Priceless!

EX-TRUSTEE’S APPOINTMENT TO PARKS BOARD STIRS CONTROVERSY By Steve Greenberg Current in Carmel

Judy Hagan’s hiatus from government is turning out to be short-lived. The former Clay Township trustee has been appointed to the Carmel/Clay Board of Parks & Recreation by her successor of one year, Trustee Doug Callahan. She supplants a stunned and saddened Sally Shapiro, an eight-year veteran who helped bring the $49 million Central Park to life, among other successes. Shapiro’s term expires Dec. 31, although she said she has ceased work on the board and on the Carmel Clay Planning Commission, of which she was a member for a year. That appointment was and is made from among parks board members. It’s the way Shapiro was replaced as much as the move itself that has Carmel buzzing. Some have said the move resembles a chess match, with Shapiro in the role of a pawn. Callahan says he turned to his predecessor, Hagan, a noted strong supporter of all parks initiatives. “This has nothing to do with Sally,” Callahan said. “As a matter of fact, I might consider putting Sally back on (the board) next year. I did talk to Judy to see if she was interested. She said she was. Judy is sharp. She

is very, very, very committed to the parks. ... I didn’t realize the planning commission seat came from the parks board, and I do feel bad about that.” That Shapiro learned of her displacement through the grapevine has become a bone of contention to many, including incoming Carmel City Council Sally Shapiro woman Luci Snyder, who said, “It’s an insensitive thing to appoint someone before you have spoken to the person who would be replaced. ... For someone who donated eight years of inherently volunteer time – often until midnight – they deserve the courtesy of a phone call.” Callahan since has spoken with Shapiro. “Doug was extremely apologetic,” Shapiro said. “I just don’t think he understood his role.”

Hagan, who appointed Shapiro to two that I don’t want to play politics; I just want to terms, said it all comes down to “whom the build parks. I’m not afraid to state my opinion, trustee wishes to appoint. Doug had asked and this is my payback. Still, I’m happy to step if I would be willing to go back on the parks down and let Judy fill my shoes.” board, and I said, ‘Why not?’... If something Shapiro shared her thoughts on why she is ‘backroom’ is going on (as some have privately being replaced. suggested), I’m not aware of it.” “It is still my perspective that Sue (Dillon, Shapiro said her final park board meeting president of the board), Mark ( Westermeier, last week was a debasing experience. parks director) and Judy were the bigger “I was instigators humili“I voted for what was in the best interest to get rid ated at the of me, of Carmel, not Carmel politics.” meeting. because I Maybe — Sally Shapiro asked too that was many questheir goal,” she said. “A comment was made tions. ... But I’m very proud of what I’ve left about how fiscally responsible Judy is. even going to get a chance to interview for the (position) in order to get reappointed. ... I think this happened because someone (else) wants to be on the planning commission more than they want to serve on the parks board. It is my belief that Sally Shapiro not getting reappointed has more to do with the planning commission (seat) than the parks board (directorship).â€? City Council member Rick Sharp said he was tremendously troubled by the handling of the situation. “While I will never argue that it is the trustee’s sole decision as to whom he or she appoints to the various positions, it seems to me only common courtesy that if a replacement is to be made you inform the outgoing member personally and ďŹ rst,â€? he said. “The fact that Sally Shapiro heard from a third party that she was not going to be

re-appointed to the parks board is appalling. I have seen several examples, over the years, of the insight and perspective that she brought to the parks board, and I always thought she asked just the sort of hard questions that a board member of a public body should ask, Sharp said. “Sally ... did not deserve being cast aside like an old shoe. It is hard enough to attract citizens willing to offer their time to city and township boards; such treatment of our current volunteers will make the job only harder. I think Sally deserves an apology, at the very least, for the shoddy treatment. “I’ve always treated people the way I want to be treated, Shapiro said. “That’s why this behavior is so shocking. It’s sad and underhanded by people beyond Doug. Hagan begins her term Jan. 1.

FEINSTEIN COLLECTION could land at PAC Editor’s note: This story first was published at 12:45 p.m., Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, at www. currentincarmel.com. By Steve Greenberg Current in Carmel

If the planets align in just the right way, the $80 million Performing Arts Center under construction at Third Avenue Southwest and City Center Drive will become home to the leading collection of George and Ira Gershwin’s music and related memorabilia, as well as that of other noted composers. Doris Anne Sadler of Indianapolis, executive director of the Michael Feinstein Foundation for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook, told Current in Carmel that discussions are ongoing between Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard, Feinstein and his partner Terrence Flannery, formerly of Indiana, and others to bring Feinstein’s Los Angeles-based collection here as the focal point of a museum and library in the PAC. Carmel is one of several cities under consideration by the foundation, Sadler said, preferring to not reveal the others. Feinstein, 51, is a decorated singer, pianist and music revivalist. The Library of Congress elected him to the National Sound Recording Advisory Board, an organization dedicated to safeguarding America’s musical heritage.

Michael Feinstein

“Michael has the largest collection of Gershwin and other composers ... certainly in this country,” Sadler said. “Michael worked for Ira as a young man, and he has collected original scores, autographed opening-night posters and other memorabilia, including movie reels. He has wanted to preserve the collection for all Americans and make it available to children, generally, and young musicians who can be exposed to it and carry it on. That’s why the foundation was born.” Brainard said his trip to New York two weeks ago was invigorating, adding, “Michael is clearly a genius. He is one of the most respected performers and anthropologists. Getting his interest in our project would be a BellaChic_CM5.705x2.469 9/29/07 5:39 wonderful thing for our city.

“With Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael and the band-instrument factories in this state, having Michael’s collection in the (PAC) would be the perfect complement to the perpetuation of the uniquely Indiana cultural heritage. We are in negotiations, and it would be a wonderful addition.” Brainard said the Feinstein foundation would utilize space at the PAC that has yet to be programmed, so there would be no cost to taxpayers to house the effort here. Sadler sees a parallel reason why the collection would be a good fit. “It’s uniquely American and music easily understood by all people,” she said. “You don’t need to know the titles or the lyrics, and even if you’ve never heard it, it’s toe-tapping, very accessible to a lot of people and easily loved. It would attract a lot of people to a performing arts center. The other component is this: Michael has so many celebrities and performers who respect him. He would put this Performing Arts Center and the foundation on the map.” Among the best-known Gershwin compositions are “Rhapsody in Blue,” “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’,” “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” “Embraceable You,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Summertime” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.”

When the value of the dollar tumbles versus foreign currencies, the time-honored advice is to buy shares of the big U.S.based multinationals that do so much business overseas. But there’s another group of stocks that does even better when the dollar is doing badly. Shares of small to midsize U.S. exporters can add big gains in market share overseas when a weak dollar makes their products cheaper for overseas customers. GET ON THE TECHNOLOGY EXPRESS

onnectivity abounds. You can be connected virtually everywhere at any time. Whether it is a city that offers wireless broadband to the masses (like Mountain View, Calif. – home to Google) or you connect via your at-home cable modem, people are online all the time. Studies suggest that people spend more time online than watching television. And television signals will eventually be delivered via the Internet. There’s no arguing that communication has fundamentally changed. It is not uncommon for people with adjacent offices David Cain to e-mail each other On Marketing rather than walk over and talk face to face. In our 20-something office, instant message is the communication vehicle of choice with real-time chats occurring at adjacent workstations regularly. Now the Internet is moving to the sky. Some airlines will now be offering the Internet in the skies. Imagine finishing your holiday shopping at a ground speed of 500 miles per hour?

This all begs the question, do you care? Are you wading into the technology revolution or plunging headlong? Here are five signs you aren’t taking full advantage of the fundamental changes underfoot. 1. To you, “wireless” connectivity means you don’t need to plug your appliances into the wall. 2. You think an iPhone is any phone that belongs to you. 3. You think the Net is something you use to catch fish or butterflies. 4. To you, Yahoo is a delicious chocolate drink. 5. You think the Web is a place where Charlotte lives. If you are a technology laggard, why should you care and why should you make an effort to catch up? One reason might be it’s more fun. If that’s not enough, how about the world will only continue to change and create a larger separation between you and reality. Changes are about more than technology, it’s about how the world develops and how relationships are formed. This is one time you don’t want to fall too far behind. So take some time this holiday season and explore technology. You might find that you become addicted. David Cain is president of MediaSauce, a digital media and online marketing company in Carmel. sorbitan monostearate, which chemists call synthetic wax and is sometimes used as a hemorrhoid cream. How charming. This substance keeps Cool Whip from turning to liquid. Next they gently stir in xanthan and guar gums, which are natural thickeners and retard the formation of ice crystals, preserving its seductively deceiving fluffiness. You can wrap up a dog log in pretty wrapping, but it’s still a dog log. I have a suggestion for you. Last night, Sandi and I took a quart of Strawberry Stony Fields Farm Organic yogurt, lined a fine-mesh strainer with a dish towel, and plopped in the yogurt. Then we placed it over a bowl to catch the whey put it in the refrigerator for about an hour (or overnight). When the whey drains off, you are left with a creamy, tasty substitute for cream topping without all the synthetic chemicals. Got it? Bon appetit.

GOT MILK? Milk is one of the best muscle foods on the planet. The protein in milk is about 20 percent whey and 80 percent casein. Both are high-quality proteins, but whey is known as a “fast protein” because it’s quickly broken down into amino acids and absorbed into the bloodstream. That makes it a good protein to consume after your workout. The vitamin D and calcium found in milk are extra benefits. — Menshealth.com

keep your lab rats away from the Cruel Whip. It is fake, full of air, so you are eating mostly water and air for just over twice what it would cost to whip real cream yourself. I don’t care if you have carpal tunnel, it’s still the lesser of two evils in moderation. Of course if you have heart disease and you eat whipped cream, you have a death wish. Wired magazine reports that the next ingredients are real doozies. They are hydrogenated coconut and palm oil, plant saturated fats, which if left alone are good for our hearts, but the process of hydrogenation alters their structure. Restaurants have banned using trans-fats in major cities all over America because of their direct connection to causing heart disease. Why can’t man leave well enough alone? Not sure about you, but I’m crazy over the next ingredient, polysorbate 60, made by taking a precursor to antifreeze and polymerizing it with a fake sugar derivative. The result, says Wired, can be detergent, an emulsifier, or in the case of polysorbate 60, a major condom lubricant. Is this what God wants us to put inside us? Next they add a dollop of delicious

RUN. REPEAT: Running at your maximum aerobic capacity is the best way to improve it. The payoff: You’ll be able to run faster with the same effort. Try 800 repeats, which are hard runs with jogging recoveries: Warm up till you’re sweating. Subtract 10 seconds from your mile-repeat pace and maintain that speed for 800 meters (twice around the track). After each 800-meter run, jog once around the track before repeating. — Menshealth.com

fter giving a speech at Anderson Heart Hospital, a 50-ish woman with serious heart disease approached my podium to ask me if Cool Whip was bad for her heart. “How much do you eat,” I inquired. She struggled to pull an oxygen tank behind her with a tube running into her nose. “Oh, about a half a tub a day,” she softly responded. After picking my jaw up off the floor, I explained that Cool Whip Topping contains man-made ingredients that lead to heart disease. Wired magazine states that water and air are the main ingredients. Next there is the blandness factor. Since blandness is a trade, snicker, secret, Wendell Fowler the company doesn’t have to disclose the specific flavorings. HEALTH WATCH MISPLACED YOUR KEYS? If you are older than 60, it may just be a normal part of aging. A Harvard University study suggests brain structures deteriorate with age in otherwise healthy people, perhaps because of communication problems between regions of the brain. The study, published in the journal Neuron, is part of an effort to understand the difference between normal, age-related declines and clinical impairment due to diseases like Alzheimer’s. — Msnbc.msn.com MUSCLE MIXING: Muscles are like men — they get bored fast. So they, and you, need to be challenged with new exercises and techniques. A general guideline: If an exercise uses more than one joint (for example, the bench press uses the shoulders and elbows; the squat uses the hips and knees), you can do it for 8 weeks before you should switch to another exercise for the same muscles. If it involves a single joint (biceps curl, triceps pushdown, lateral raise), find a substitute after just 4 weeks. — menshealth.com

IN PAIN? TRY MUSIC: Simply listening to music for one hour a day can by 20 percent, Cleveland Clinic researchers recently found. It can even reduce the need for pain medication before and after surgery. Music seems to stimulate the release of pain-masking endorphins in the brain, says Cheryl Dileo, a music therapy professor and director of the Arts and Quality of Life Research Center at Temple University. Music can also amplify the effects of a visualization exercise called guided imagery, in which patients focus on a specific image or sensation that evokes the emotions they want to feel, says Ronit Azoulay, a music therapist at the Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. — prevention.com

with the situation. The statistics, according to iSafe.org, are alarming: • 42 percent of kids have been bullied while online. • 35 percent of kids have been threatened online. • 21 percent of kids have received mean or threatening e-mail or other messages. • 58 percent of kids admit someone has said mean or hurtful things to them online. • 53 percent of kids admit having said something mean or hurtful to another person online. • 58 percent have not told their parents or an adult about something mean or hurtful that happened to them online. Parents who are completely out of the loop with their child’s technology usage can find it hard to detect when something of this nature may be occurring, but generally speaking, changes to the child’s behavior will accompany the attacks. Not any of these signs on their own is an indicator, but combined they could warrant a discussion with your child: • Clearing the screen when you enter the room • Getting behind in school work

• Lack of appetite, headaches or stomachaches • Trouble sleeping • Fear of leaving the house, especially to go to school • Appears upset after Internet use. • A marked change in attitude, dress or habits It’s also vital to discuss with your “screenager” the importance of not participating in any online discussion that serves to demean or belittle others. What may seem like a harmless action only serves to amplify the problem for the victim and encourages the instigator to continue. From a technology standpoint, if you feel the need you can install a program that will track all of the activity that occurs on your child’s computer, including what others are sending them via instant messaging. Checkout the various tracking software available from sites such as www.spectorsoft. com and www.spytech-web.com as the activity logs that they generate can come in handy if you need to report the problem to a school or law enforcement.

MAKING VIDEO EASIER: New features in the Firefox and Opera browsers could make it less complex and cheaper for people to incorporate video into their Web sites, representatives of Mozilla and Opera say. Firefox and Opera will support a new HTML tag specifically for embedding video in Web pages. As long as the browsers support a video’s specific codec, or encoding method, the browsers will then be able to play the video without launching third-party enabling software, said Chris Double, a Mozilla engineer. Mozilla and Opera are also working to support the royalty-free video codec Ogg Theora. — pcworld.com

he recent story of the teen in Missouri who committed suicide as a result of being tormented through a MySpace page illuminates the phenomenon of “cyber bullying.” As it turns out, acquaintances allegedly posed as a teenage boy who was interested in the girl, then suddenly turned on her via the MySpace page. While suicide is not commonplace, the incidence of using technology to bully others has been on the rise. Our kids are completely immersed in technology, with a major form of their communication coming through text messaging, instant messaging and social Gary Hubbard networking sites. Technology This constant contact also allows the schoolyard bully to continue to hound his or her victims 24 hours a day and invite others to pile on. This pack mentality combined with the anonymity of the attacks put a lot of stress on young victims who don’t know how to deal

(NOT: What do you want to eat?) Child learns self-confidence. You can pick up your room now or before you go out. You decide. (NOT: Clean up your room or else.) Child learns self-motivation. Do you want to have a party for six or have two friends sleep over? (NOT: How many kids do you want to invite?) Child learns to set limits. When you figure out what you’ll do differently, we can talk about your using the car again. (NOT: You’re grounded from using the car.) Child learns to think skillfully. When you choose not to re-fill the gas tank, you’re telling me you don’t want to drive tomorrow. (NOT: How many times do I have to tell you?) Child learns to share control. Your lying tells me you’re making bad choices. (NOT: Don’t lie to me.)

WALKING FOR FITNESS: Run/Walk Club members, all of whom are fifth-graders, are using pedometers and logging their steps and miles to increase their physical fitness during this school year at Carmel Elementary School. The students meet after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and head for a quarter-mile path that has been marked out on school property. Members hope to log enough total miles this school year to equal walking across America.

DISPATCHES SHOP ONLINE EASILY: Web site of the week: smartbargins.com. Instead of scouring the racks for deals in a crowded store, hop online! This site rounds up the best in designer clothing, home furnishings, jewelry and more, and sells the goods for up to 70 percent off retail prices. And if you don’t like what you get in the mail, simply return it within 30 days to get a full refund, no questions asked. — Quick and Simple MASHED POTATO SECRETS: The secret of really good mashed potatoes is in ... the mashing, suggests Julia Moskin in The New York Times (11/14/07). For that, you need the right kind of masher: “The best mashers, available from Oxo, Rosle and others, are those with a flat face, a grid pattern and crisp edges where the potato meets the masher.” As for the mashing itself: “It should take no more than two minutes to reach the fluffy mountains stage. A brief, efficient mashing keeps the potatoes from turning gummy.” You may be best off stopping there because “beating the potatoes into submission does not make them any smoother; they can quickly edge into the dreaded library-paste style.” — coolnews@reveries.com MOISTURIZING FACE MASK: Mix a quarter cup of plain yogurt with two tablespoons of honey. Apply to face; let sit for 10 minutes before washing off. Honey seals in moisture, while yogurt’s lactic acid soothes and softens. — Quick and Simple FOOD FACT: The average American consumes 35,000 cookies in his or her lifetime. — Quick and Simple

THE MEANING OF ONE-, TWO-, AND THREE- BUTTON SUITS Just as single, double, or no vents at the back of a jacket marks you as either an unrepentant Ivy Leaguer, a Euro wannabe, or a husky ex-linebacker, the buttons on the front have a code of their own. One button: The most aristocratic of the styles, one-button is a great look for after dark. “A man wearing this suit jacket probably spends a lot of time in social settings and doesn’t necessarily wear a suit for business on a daily basis,” says Lauren Solomon, president of Strategic i Image Consulting and a former VP at JP Morgan Chase. Two buttons: The Dow Jones was built by men in this can’t-go-wrong look. It’s appropriate for

denim, but the comeback of the business suit is complete in the corporate capitals. There’s still life in the three-button suit, which has reigned for a while, but the two-buttoner is on the rise. Because the top button closes lower on the chest, the lapels form a deeper V than in the three-button style, creating a north-south meridian that makes us all look a little more like Terrell Owens. As for the four-button suit, we never liked them. They made us look like Austin Powers. And now they’re officially outmoded, Babeeey! — menshealth.com

Classic: The Dark Suit 1 all business situations and looks good on every body type. Three buttons: This configuration harks back to ’60s mods, the original trendsetters. It’s for the man “who wants the option to play it 2 traditional or on the edge,” says Solomon. Button either or both of the top two buttons for the current look. Silicon Valley is still stubbornly khaki-and-

The dark suit has been making us look taller and smarter for centuries. You need one (black). No, make that two (blue). Or three (charcoal). Precisely because they appear so plain, dark suits are great canvases on which to splash some personality. Flash nonconformist color with a necktie. Show flair with a pocket square. Its color should refer to your tie, and its fabric should match it, but its pattern never should. — menshealth.com

With the dedication of Congregation Shaarey Tefilla on Dec. 9, Carmel now has its first synagogue, or shul. This mitzvoth, or blessing, came during the Jewish month of miracles, coinciding with the celebration of Hanukkah, the so-called Festival of Lights. Hanukkah, which this year was Dec. 5-12, celebrates a miracle during the rededication of the Second Temple in the second century B.C. Enough lamp oil for a single day burned for eight days. Jews today burn candles for eight nights of the holiday to commemorate the event. So it was fitting that the miracle of the new temple, which replaces the congregation’s former home on Central Avenue in Indianapolis, took place this December. It’s equally appropriate that the congregation marked the occasion by presenting the city of Carmel with a large silver and brass menorah, or candelabra. “Earlier this month, the mayor’s office called to inquire about purchasing a menorah for City Hall, and we decided to present one to the city that has welcomed us so warmly,” Rabbi Arnold Bienstock said. Several hundred members of the congregation, many of whom live in Carmel, were on hand to witness the transfer of the sacred To-

The 225 staff members serve about 13,000 diners each week, for a total of 850,000 to 900,000 guests every year, senior manager Grant Hopkins said. The restaurant does $12 million in sales each year. “Our menu kind of sells us,” Hopkins said, because the restaurant does not advertise. There are 200 menu items, more than 40 desserts and more than 30 signature drinks. The most popular items are the Chicken Madeira and the Cajun Jambalaya, Hopkins said. The white chocolate raspberry truffle, the original with strawberry and the Godiva are the most popular cheesecakes. Hopkins estimates the restaurant sells between 5,000 and 6,000 slices every week. The Fashion Mall location opened seven years ago, and was the 37th Cheesecake Factory; now there are 139 locations nationwide.
