It is our position Conner Prairie Interactive History Park is an important asset for Hamilton County. Named a 2010 National Medal for Museum and Library Science recipient, Conner Prairie draws visitors and attention from around the world. Conner Prairie is a unique quest to bring history alive through immersion in experience, rather than a regurgitation of facts. At Conner Prairie, a visitor can become a recruit ready to battle against “Morgan’s Raids” on Indiana during the Civil War, a fur trader negotiating with the Lenape Indians, or an Indiana farmer in 1836. Residents of Hamilton County who only visit to listen to a “Symphony on the Prairie” are missing all of what the park has to offer. There is something for all ages – from the new “hands-on” play village in Dupont, Indiana (focus on early childhood learners) to the realistic 1859 Balloon Voyage Ride, to Grandparent’s Day Wednesdays. The Apple Store is open selling goodies and products made in the USA. As history education takes a backseat role to Math and English, it is important for parents to “fill the gap” in their children’s education. It is our position the Indiana Economic Development Corporation is acting in the best interests of our fine state and its citizens by touting the advantages Indiana offers to businesses contemplating relocation. Indiana’s record of financial stability, educational opportunities, and low cost of living make relocation to the Hoosier State a very attractive option to businesses currently headquartered in our neighboring states. Success in attracting new business has translated into additional job opportunities, continuation of lower income/corporate taxes, more financially-stable government and an overall better environment for Indiana residents. It is likely that adjacent jurisdictions might not be pleased with Indiana’s often-considered aggressive program to lure errant businesses to consider relocation within our borders. However, as long as the claims made to support these marketing efforts contain verifiable facts about the benefits offered to potential incoming companies there is no foul. A candidate making the sacrifices to be competitive, IEDC has earned the right to contend for companies who could bring value home because of our own government’s ongoing record of financial responsibility.

While it is true that the construction projects have impacted commute time and have created logjams at several junctures, this is the price we pay for growth and development. If the infrastructure doesn’t at least keep up with, or get far enough ahead of, such growth and development, our town will be just another perpetual traffic nightmare. Commentary By Terry Anker Some weeks ago, I was following an email thread surreptitiously. I can, at times, be a little bit of a thought voyeur. Although I enjoy exchanging messages with a number of different folks about topics as varied as the fate and reminiscences of our alma mater to the modern state of the free market, I sometimes simply watch the interactions as they fill my inbox, deciding not to enter the fray. Much like sitting silent at the dinner table as the rest of the family relates stories of their passing day I enjoy the discourse uninterrupted by my own participation. At any rate, the communication garnering my attention pertained to access to higher education. This time, unlike the countless times this commonplace topic struck my ear, I was reminded of my own graduate education in Bloomington many years ago. Although I have no idea if the policy still exists, at the time entering students were required to sign a pledge promising we would not hold a job during our first year of study. Perhaps the intentions were

good enough – working students were more likely to struggle in the vigorous academic environment. But as often is the case with good intentions, there was a more nefarious side to consider. Working class students found themselves mandated to get loans to attend. And for anyone pursuing that education immediately following undergraduate completion, they were likely required to get a parental cosigner exposing mom and dad to the debt obligation. The alternative was to not attend the school – or to lie and get a job anyway. You can guess my choice. Does it make sense to create systems that reward those who chose to become dependent upon institutionally imposed mandates rather than individuals who are willing to work harder to accomplish their goals?

No more pity party COMMENTARY By Danielle Wilson Lately I’ve been having a bit of a pity party for myself. Work has been unbelievably stressful and time-consuming, which has led to both a disgusting house and neglected kids. I’ve felt taken advantage of, unappreciated and have pretty much vented to anyone with ears. All of my other roles of wife, daughter, sister, and friend have been forgotten or temporarily abandoned while I’ve struggled to keep my head above the rough and often treacherous waters of working mom. Well no more. I spent the holiday weekend with family and a couple of good movies. I now have a whole new perspective on my life. So thank you to . . . Soul Surfer. Have you seen this flick yet? It’s based on the true story of a girl from Hawaii who lost an arm in a shark attack but went on to become a professional surfer. It’s not produced well, it doesn’t showcase quality acting and there is a strong Christian bend; however, the film struck a chord with me. This little girl could have quit surfing forever and no one would have judged her in the least. But she chose to try. She chose to not let any obstacle stop her from realizing her dream. And I’m making lame excuses for why I don’t exercise or read to my kids anymore? The Help. This film explores the complicated relationship between Southern white women

and their black maids during the racially-charged 1960s. Maids did everything from the grocery shopping to polishing silver and potty training. The women worked six days a week and earned less than minimum wage. But they took tremendous pride in their work and rarely voiced complaints. And I’m bitchin’ because I’ve had to spend some weekends grading a few more papers than usual? Gimme a break. They had to pee in separate toilets because their bosses thought they’d spread diseases. I can’t even imagine! My cousin. He just started divorce proceedings and he is dealing with all of the sadness, anger and worry that goes along with ending a marriage and splitting up a family. He’ll have to pay alimony, child support and work out a visitation schedule to spend time with his three children. And I’m upset because Doo isn’t putting his empty wineglass in the dishwasher? Geez, Danielle. Life as he knows it is over! And his kids? How will this affect them? So you won’t hear any more silliness from me. I have a job, a husband, four healthy children, and now, a positive outlook. The [pity] party’s over, folks. Time to go home. Peace out. Reconciling despite differences RELATIONSHIPS By Doug Jeschke Having a conflict with someone affects the relationship so much more than simply the topic of the dispute. For example, my wife, and John, a close friend of mine, have had an ongoing fight about politics for just a little longer then we have been married. John is a confirmed conservative, while my wife is more moderate (which to my friend makes her an extreme liberal). It’s not just that they argue politics whenever they see each other, lots of people do that. The problem is that the difference of opinion has really shaded their whole relationship. So, more than just a disagreement about national policy, my wife is irritated by how John brings up the topic around her—as if it is an opportunity to goad her, not a desire to discuss ideas. And although I feel John is trying to be good natured, my wife finds him demeaning and disrespectful. I talk with my wife about how to reconcile the relationship, without necessarily resolving the ideological differences between them. They are not going to come to an agreement (say, on healthcare) anytime soon. The difficulty is they have a hard time separating out the substance of the disagreement, politics, from the real issue: the relationship dynamics

between them. There is something just offputting about the way my friend talks to my wife, which she can’t even pinpoint. As tough as these situations are, this is actually an example of the benefit we receive from being in conflict. My wife is irritated when John talks about politics – but she knows she really should not be. After all, she truly believes that it is beneficial for different ideas to be expounded and pursued. So what she needs to do is spend some time working through why she is so annoyed when John expresses his opinion. It may be that she holds a presumption she is not aware of, or even that John reminds her of someone in her past. Once she has done that work, she will be in a good position to sit down with John to try to reconcile their relationship. If she can be honest about what she has learned about herself, I’m sure that John will be receptive to what he might do differently to improve their relationship. That is, what he can do short of switching to what he sees as the dark side of politics. County remembers Sept. 11 on anniversary By Robert Herrington robert@youarecurrent.com More than 200 residents took the time to honor and remember those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. 10 years ago during the Hamilton County Professional Firefighters 10th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Service. Local 4416 President Tony Murray said that firefighters changed from first responders to front line defenders on Sept. 11, 2001. “Ten years ago our lives changed, as did our world,” he said. “Firefighters knew that day their job and mission changed that day. . .It demonstrated the American spirit for the rest of the world. The New York City firefighter became the image of courage – days, weeks and months after.” Murray added that he was very pleased with the public turnout and it showed “a strong community.” “9/11 really brings us all together with a common purpose no matter where we were at. I’m not surprised at the turnout it’s a great show of support,” he said. Recollecting on 10 years earlier, Murray said he remembers exactly where he was he first heard of the attacks and the eeriness of the day. “There was a real sense of the unknown. I wondered when the attacks were going to stop. Personally, you evaluate what’s important,” he said. The ceremony included speeches from Ham-

Today as Americans we all feel the same way,” said Ditslear. “For each life sacrificed on Sept. 11, thousands will grieve. . . Sept. 11 showed us the absolute worst behavior of any human being and yet it showed the best behavior with compassion, selflessness.” Despite our emotions, Dillinger said it was important to remember the good that came from the terrorist attacks 10 years ago. “Today we are here to remember those who so willingly and unselfishly gave their lives for their fellow Americans,” he said. “We honor and thank them.” Standing in front of a beam from the World Trade Center that will become part of a permanent Hamilton County Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial, Schultze spoke on the importance of memorials for reminiscing and education. “It’s hard to believe it has been 10 years. It seems like yesterday under the same blue sky about 3,000 people died,” he said. It’s a reminder of how precious life is – we learned that lesson that day.” “I believe that a memorial helps us remember the loss. We loss not only lives but a little innocence. HSE receives sixth consecutive â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;exemplaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rating By Jordan Fischer jordan@youarecurrent.com The Hamilton Southeastern School District received a rating of â&#x20AC;&#x153;A-Exemplaryâ&#x20AC;? for the 20102011 school year under Indianaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comprehensive education accountability system. This marks HSEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sixth consecutive year to receive an â&#x20AC;&#x153;exemplaryâ&#x20AC;? rating since the category placements were adopted in the 2005-2006 school year. The 2010-2011 school year was the first that school corporations also received an A-F letter grade. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Communities should have the opportunity to celebrate their â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Aâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; schools and reward their educators for driving academic growth,â&#x20AC;? said Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our best schools are a source of pride that I hope will inspire efforts across the state.â&#x20AC;? HSE received a performance rating of 91.5

percent, as measured by the percentage of students who pass the Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s English and math ISTEP+ (for grades 3-8) and English 10 and Algebra I ECAs (for the class of 2013). The following schools have received individual consecutive exemplary ratings since 2005: Brooks School Elementary; New Britton Elementary School; Fishers Elementary School; Geist Elementary School; Lantern Road Elementary School; Sand Creek Intermediate School; Fall Creek Intermediate School; Hamilton Southeastern Jr. High School; Hamilton Heights Elementary School. Hamilton Southeastern High School and Fishers High School both received a rating of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Academic Progressâ&#x20AC;? in 2011, with 86.7 percent and 88.5 percent of students passing state tests, respectively.

Personal ad: Pronoun wanted GRAMMAR GURU By Brandie Bohney

WANTED: Singular, gender-neutral English pronoun. No sexists. Regular availability is a must. Flexibility and open-mindedness also required. Should have a possessive side. Previous pronoun was complex and difficult, so simplicity is appreciated, as well. Must refer to people rather than objects: it need not apply. English fails a bit when it comes to pronouns. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get me wrong, we have some great pronouns. Awesome pronouns, even. But English doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a good singular pronoun that refers to a person of a nondisclosed gender. Am I losing you? Remember the indefinite pronouns everyone, everybody, someone, somebody, anyone, and anybody? Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all singular, but they sound plural. And worse yet, since theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re gender-neutral, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impossible to use his or her as a pronoun to replace them without risking being labeled as a sexist. Enter their. Now, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not going to advocate use of their as a singular pronoun, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a growing faction of grammar enthusiasts who believe that their should be considered as an alternative to other â&#x20AC;&#x201C; often tremendously awkward or repetitive â&#x20AC;&#x201C; singular, possessive, gender-neutral pronoun options. The other options (his or her, he or she, he/ she, s/he) are difficult to read, become mindnumbingly repetitive when used more than a once or twice, and, in a couple of cases, arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even pronounceable. Some people believe their should be the alternative. There is some historical usage to back up 8 | September 20, 2011

this theory. For hundreds of years, their has been used periodically in written communication as a gender-neutral singular possessive pronoun, and it hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been used solely by the grammatically incompetent. In fact, Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Dickens are a few users of the singular their. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty sure youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll agree that those guys were pretty fair word-wielders. Still, as of today, acceptance of their as a singular in these instances is not widely accepted. It is possible, with time, that it will become standard. An artistic statement, for sure, but an appropriate one for the artist – known professionally as “Sandro,” a shortening of Alexander – whose career as a painter and architect spans three decades and two continents. “Architecture, art, music… it’s everything,” Sandro said. “Everything is connected.” A native of Georgia – known as the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic until its declaration of independence in 1991 shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union – Sandro now makes his home, and his art, in Fishers, where he lives with his wife, Irena Janiashvili.

Basically gin with sparkling lemonade, the Tom Collins cocktail was born of the Great Tom Collins Hoax of 1874. • 3 cups fresh corn (about 3 ears) • 4 scallions, white and green parts thinly sliced separately • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1 teaspoon chili powder • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 2 plum tomatoes, finely diced • 1 fresh chili, finely diced (including seeds) you pick how hot! • 1 (2-pound) trimmed Boneless Sirloin Steak, about 1 1/2 inches thick • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro • Accompaniment: lime wedges

Heat a dry large cast-iron skillet over moderately high heat until hot, then pan-roast corn, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a bowl.

Lightly butter a 13/9 baking dish. Combine flours, cinnamon, baking

These are brownies, Rice Krispie bars or any type of cake eaten by hand and without the necessity of a fork or plate. Here is a great recipe for everybody’s favorite, carrot cake, in a bar.

Process until blended then gradually add the carrots through the feed tube while the motor is running. Process until the carrots are finely chopped. Spread the batter into the prepared dish and bake for 35 minutes, or until the edges pull away from the sides and you can place a tooth pick into the middle and it comes out dry. Cool on a wire rack.

To make the frosting beat the cream cheese and conf. sugar until smooth. Add the lemon juice, nutmeg and vanilla. Spread the frosting over the cooled bars and then sprinkle with chopped pecans. Cut into bars. Decorate each with an icing orange carrot with green leaves. Or decorate each with a team “letter” symbol, like the ND for Notre Dame. Grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer inserted horizontally into thickest part of meat registers 130°F, 18 to 20 minutes total for medium-rare. Transfer steak to a grooved cutting board and let stand 5 minutes before slicing. While steak is standing, reheat corn mixture over moderate heat, stirring occasionally. Stir in cilantro and scallion greens if you choose. Spoon corn on top of sliced steak.

DESIGN By Sue Faulstich In recent years, reclaimed wood has steadily grown in popularity for use in the manufacturing of furniture, flooring, and architectural details for the 21st century home. Many present-day home interiors are designed using a mix of styles, making it easier to incorporate some of the rich, unique woods that are salvaged from a number of interesting places. Whether the wood is taken from old buildings or boats, designers and architects take great delight in using this vintage look as a compliment to many modern styles. With an understanding of the history of the timber business, it is easy to appreciate why there is such an appeal for reclaimed wood. When the North American forests were first harvested for wood, the trees were already several hundred years old. These mature trees had the time to develop “heart wood,” the dense, dark wood in the center of the tree, desired for its rich colors and unique textures, characteristics that have since proven non-replicable. Not only was it more beautiful, the wood produced from the hearts of these massive old timbers was harder, stronger and denser than anything gathered since. Beyond beauty and sustainability, there are a number of other advantages to using recycled lumber. Commonly-sighted qualities by manufacturers are stability, durability and hardness. Another practical advantage to reclaimed wood

is the exposure it has had to changes in humidity; unlike freshly cut wood, it has been expanding and contracting for several hundred years. But personally, the most intriguing reason I kept hearing for using reclaimed wood, is that many salvagers of antique lumber find the history fascinating and lean towards its use for that reason alone. Old barn wood is perhaps the most popular form of recycled wood in the United States. Using salvaged barn beams, which have been chopped or sawed by hand, is a popular architectural detail effortlessly incorporated into many great rooms, hearth rooms, and kitchens. Barn boards and beams are easily at home in both sophisticated and rustic settings. Consumers are finally beginning to appreciate the beauty found in recycled lumber taken from structures like old mills and abandoned warehouses. It has become fashionable, as well as environmentally-friendly, to use this reclaimed product in furniture-making and home decor. What we have learned from this eco-friendly generation is that any time we can recycle a product it only helps the overall environment. Using reclaimed wood is steadily becoming as common as throwing a plastic bottle into a recycling bin.

Dr. Jeffrey Blake is a leader in the Indianapolis area at performing laparoscopic hysterectomies, an alternative to traditional hysterectomy that enables a quicker recovery, smaller scars and an outpatient hospital stay.

“Most patients go home four to eight hours after surgery, and recovery is usually one to three weeks, not six to eight,” he said. “Unfortunately, the majority of hysterectomies are still performed abdominally, and that’s what results in the most pain and longest delay getting back to normal activity post-surgery.”

For many years, women have been led to believe that ovarian cancer is the undetectable, silent killer. While the disease has a reputation of being harder to detect than other forms of cancer, there are several warning signs women should watch out for that can lead to early discovery, giving those affected a better chance at remission. Symptoms that may indicate ovarian cancer include: bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or suppressed appetite and urinary difficulties – usually a feeling of having to urinate too often. If you have experienced any of these symptoms, don’t worry; most everyone does at some point. If any of these symptoms lasts for more than two weeks, however, you should contact your primary care provider about a pelvic exam and ultrasound. Early detection always means better odds at survival, so if any of these symptoms sound all too familiar, don’t wait. Is it time to turn the cellphone off? COMMENTARY By CJ McClanahan Imagine that you own a business and every Monday at 10 am you ask your senior staff members to meet for one hour. During this meeting you lay out plans for the week and discuss progress towards your goals. Do you allow your team to bring their cell phones to the meeting? If yes, are they allowed to respond to texts/emails while others are talking? Now, fast forward to lunch and see yourself sitting at a table with a prospect/client/close friend and your phone vibrates. Do you pick it up to see who is calling/texting/emailing? Over the last 8 years, I have been conducting a non-scientific experiment in human behavior. My research indicates that 97.5% of leaders allow their staff to play on their phones during meetings and 99.8% of individuals check to see who is calling when they hear/feel the vibration at lunch. There was actually a time when we didn’t carry a phone to every meeting, little league game or lunch appointment. And guess what? People were OK with the fact that we couldn’t be reached every minute of every day. In fact, I would argue that our productivity was higher when we paid attention to the current moment. So, why do we do it? Why have we allowed interruptions into every facet of our lives? The unfortunate truth is that we have become so addicted to immediate gratification that we

actually enjoy the disruptions. We get bored easily and look for anything to break the monotony. That’s why one of the most important habits you can develop is the ability to avoid distractions and live in the moment. Research clearly indicates that it’s nearly impossible to multitask on more than one activity that requires your thoughtful attention. As a result, when you allow yourself to be distracted by interruptions you easily lose your train of thought. A handful of texts during a meeting can keep you from grasping an important concept. Answering emails while working on a critical document can stretch a one hour project into an entire afternoon. I’ve been working on living in the moment for the last eight years and one thing I can promise you is that it’s not easy. The world tells you that inviting distractions into your life is the best way to stay connected and be productive. The world is wrong. It’s time to slow down and smell the roses. Custom bath remodel with enlarged walk-in shower COMMENTARY By Larry Greene ORIGINAL MASTER BATH: This home is located in the Feather Cove subdivision in the Geist area. When the homeowners recently purchased their 20-year-old home, they knew the master bath was the first thing on their list to renovate. According to the homeowners, “We had this small fiberglass shower (think telephone booth), carpeting on the floor, very short vanities, poor space utilization and out-of-date fixtures and countertops.” NEW CUSTOM DESIGN: The design team set out to modify the overall floor plan as needed to come up with a functional design to meet the owner’s needs. According to the owner, “The 3-D design experience was excellent. We were able to work in a real-time basis to make changes and immediately see a 3-D rendering of the finished bathroom.” FAVORITE FEATURES: The homeowner commented, “The redesign of our space allowing us to have a full size walk-in shower is our favorite part of the remodel. The features we enjoy include the efficient use of space, walk-in shower, taller counters, new travertine flooring, free standing tub, upgraded fixtures and new coun-

The construction phase lasted about four weeks. The bathroom was sealed with a zippered “air lock” to keep any dust from the remainder of the house. Each day drop cloths were placed over hardwood floors and removed at the end of the day. Carpeting was protected with a self-sticking durable plastic sheet, it survived throughout the construction. SHOWER DETAILS: The walk-in shower includes a frameless glass enclosure with two panels and brushed nickel hardware. The new

Back to school and backpacks HUMOR By Dick Wolfsie I never wore a bike helmet when I was a kid. I have no recollection of using seatbelts. Things were different in those days. My Little League baseball coach instructed us not to drink water when we were practicing because it would give us a stomach ache. Every time my mother bought me a pair of shoes, they X-rayed both my feet for good measure and then I’d also get zapped with a chest X-ray anytime I went to the pediatrician. I’m not into conspiracy theories, but looking back now, this may have been a well-executed plot to prevent Boomers from living into adulthood and bleeding dry all the future Social Security and Medicare funds. I don’t ever remember wearing a backpack when I was a kid. Most of us had three-ring binders and we stacked our algebra and English lit book on top then trotted down the hall to class. A few nerds (or whatever they were called in the ’60s) carried briefcases. This made it tough on bullies because it was hard to get both a seventh grader and an attaché case into a locker. The hottest new thing in backpacks is L.L. Bean’s Turbo Transit II, which is also the highspeed train my sister takes to work from Long Island to Manhattan. The backpack is 2,400 cubic inches, the ideal size, say the Bean counters. Of course, if you told me that 2,400 cubic inches

is the size of my front lawn, I’d have believed that, also. Now, scientists say: “A loaded backpack should not exceed 10 percent of the child’s weight, so a grade-schooler who weighs 100 pounds should only be hauling (wait, wait, don’t tell me)—10 pounds.” This astounding calculation comes to us from the fine folks at AOTA (the American Occupational Therapy Association), who also note: “A backpack worn too low will cause a child’s shoulders to hunch and neck to lean forward.” We didn’t have backpacks in the ’60s, but that’s still a darn good description of my entire high school graduating class parading up to get their diplomas. AOTA researchers roamed the corridors of hundreds of high schools and asked more than 1,000 students if they could weigh them and then weigh their backpacks. About 50 percent did exceed the recommended limit. The other half called school security. Last year there were 29,754 backpack-related injuries reported by emergency rooms across the country. I’m not sure what that means, but this has to be a good thing for today’s aspiring scholars. “The dog ate my homework” just doesn’t cut it anymore.
