HSE documents submitted to AG’s ‘Eyes on Education’ portal

By Elissa Maudlin and Leila Kheiry A handful of Hamilton County school districts, including Hamilton Southeastern Schools, are among 14 in the SCHOOLS state whose educational materials have been submitted for review on Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita’s “Eyes on Education” portal.

The portal contains submitted material that involves “objectionable curricula, policies or programs affecting children,” according to the attorney general’s office.

The HSE documents on the portal consist of screenshots of the district’s gender support plan, Black Lives Matter material for teachers and tweets regarding “whiteness and white supremacy” from a person who led a presentation to teachers. All the material appears to be from 2021.

an email that the documents are from the district, and date back to the 2020-21 school year. She said they are outdated and no longer in practice.

“We were unaware of Attorney General Todd Rokita’s ‘Eyes on Education’ portal, only learning about it through local media coverage shortly after the site launched,”

she stated, adding that parents are always welcome and encouraged to bring questions and concerns to the district.

Other Hamilton County school districts with material submitted to the portal are Noblesville Schools and Carmel Clay Schools.

The attorney general’s office stated it will follow up on submitted materials that might violate state law using investigative tools, including public records requests, and publish findings on the portal.

Josh DeFonce, media director for the attorney general’s office, said the office will continue to post verified material on the site and if schools respond, their responses also will be posted.

“Transparency is a good thing and parents engaging in the upbringing of their children should be what everyone wants, including schools,” DeFonce stated.

Hamilton Southeastern senior Audrey Crawford, who will swim for Auburn University next season, capped her impressive high school career with four medals. She placed second in the 200 individual medley and third in the 100 butterfly. She was on the third-place medley relay team with sophomore Naomi Haines, senior Julia Kiley and junior Kiley Zoeller. Crawford was on the fourth-place 400 freestyle relay with sophomore Mia Henderson, Kiley and Zoeller.

Zoeller placed eighth in the 50 freestyle.

Larry L. Savage Jr. said he previously voted to elect Victoria Spartz to represent Indiana’s 5th District in Congress, but POLITICS he doesn’t believe she’s done enough to hold the nation’s executive branch accountable or delivered tangible results for her constituents.

So, the Anderson resident decided to run for the seat himself, in part “to try to fix her mistakes.” He joins Savage a crowded field of 10 other candidates as of Feb. 7 — including Spartz, who recently reversed her decision not to seek reelection — in the May 7 Republican primary.

“I’m a MAGA candidate, and I believe in the values of the 45th president of the United States, (such as) energy independence and border security,” he said.

Savage worked as a correctional officer for 26 years before retiring from that occupation and transitioning to a job in property management. His second career gave him insight into how difficult it has become in recent years for many people to pay rent or afford other basic necessities, he said.

“I feel the pain of the average person, because that’s what I am,” he said. “If I get elected to Congress, I’ll go up there and represent the people of this district with all of my heart.”

Savage is married and has three adult children. He has spent time working with children with special needs and people with traumatic brain injuries. He is also a member of the Anderson Redevelopment Commission.

Fishers offers Spring Break Camp

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com With spring break coming up, the City of Fishers Parks Department has resurrected its Spring Break Arts Camp, which was put on pause when the COVID-19 ACTIVITIES pandemic hit.

“We are really excited to bring back our spring break camp, which we haven’t done since 2019,” Parks Director Marissa Deckert said.

The camp offerings coincide with the Hamilton Southeastern Schools spring break, scheduled for April 1-5. Deckert said the department will bring in local artist Jeanette P. Parssi for morning art sessions.

“It’s a really cool program,” Deckert said.

“Her theme is ‘travel around the world,’ so she’s going to take a bunch of cultural experiences from around the world and infuse them into her art camp, which will be the first half of the day.”

The morning sessions’ activity schedule is: • April 1 — Africa (Namibian eggshell paintings and Senufo mud paintings) • April 2 — Asia (Chinese dragon watercolors and Samoan bark paintings)

For the daily afternoon sessions, parks staff will provide a more traditional summer camp experience, Deckert said, including STEM activities, outdoor play and music exploration. All camp activities will take place at the Parks Department headquarters at Hub & Spoke, 8100 E. 106th St. The Spring Break Camp is geared toward students ages 8 to 13. Fishers High School swimmer ends on special note in state finals

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Fishers High School senior Avery Stein put a nice finishing touch on her prep career.

Stein helped the Tigers place third Feb. 10 at the girls swimming and diving state finals at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI. She placed third in the 200-yard individual Stein medley and fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

Stein also was on the second-place 400 freestyle and third-place 200 freestyle relay teams.

“This final meet was special,” Stein said.

“This year, my team has really stepped up, and we lost a lot of seniors from last year’s team. We showed we can be strong.”

Stein was named the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award winner, which is presented to a senior girls swimmer competing in the state finals.

“It was a surprise,” she said. “I was extremely grateful to even be nominated.

Stein said the team excelled in mental attitude, “The grit we show and the excellence that we achieve really shows our work ethic, and our coaches really set us up for the achievements,” Stein said. “They really lead us through swimming and through life.”

Fishers coach Joe Keller said Stein’s leadership helped guide the special group.

“She’s led this team in such a way and learned so much from the people before,” Keller said.

Stein, who ranks academically in the top 10 percent of her senior class of 907 students, is a member of National Honor

Society, the Student Athletic Team and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also is a two-time USA Swimming All-American. She will study pre-professional dental in college.

In 2023, Stein placed fifth in the 200 individual medley and fourth in the 100 breaststroke. As a sophomore, she was third in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

“My favorite memories of my high school career were developing lifelong friendships,” Stein said. “The Fishers High School swim team is so very special, and that includes the coaching staff. I am so grateful to say that every year I have swam for FHS I could honestly call every person on my team a great friend. Also, it was really special to share two high school seasons swimming with my sister (Alexandra).”

Alexandra, who graduated in 2022, swims for the University of Wyoming.

Avery started swimming at age 5.

“Growing up, I played soccer and basketball and ran cross country and track up until high school,” she said. “I committed to swim at the University of Missouri (in February 2023). I really liked the coaching staff and could see and feel how much they care about their athletes.”

No injuries in Fishers house fire news@currentinfishers.com There were no injuries from a fire late Feb. 12 at a large residence that was under construction FIRST RESPONDERS in the Fishers’ Breakwater neighborhood off Brooks School Road, according to the Fishers Fire Department.

A news release from the FFD stated that firefighters responded shortly before 11 p.m. to the unoccupied home, which was engulfed in flames.

“Upon arrival of the first engine, the structure was fully involved with fire,” the release stated. “Over 35 firefighters battled the blaze, as well as the ensuing woods fire located behind the residence. Additional homes beyond the woods were a concern with fire extension. However, firefighters were able to contain the fire without additional spread to other buildings.”

FFD reports that the building was set back from the road and there weren’t fire hydrants nearby. Firefighters had to use multiple engines and handlines to get water to the site. The building was a complete loss, the news release stated.

Beth Sheller appointed to HEPL board

The Hamilton County Council voted Feb. 7 to appoint Beth Sheller to the Hamilton East Public Library Board of LIBRARY Trustees. Sheller replaces Micah Beckwith, who resigned from the board Jan. 10.

Beckwith cited his bid for lieutenant governor as a reason for stepping down. He followed two others who resigned from Sheller the board within the last six months — former board secretary Ray Maddalone, who tendered his resignation Oct. 5, and former board president Tiffanie Ditlevson, who resigned Dec. 4.

Sheller is the election administrator for the Hamilton County Election Office, a board member of the Noblesville GOP club and secretary for the Hamilton County Republican Party.

“I was encouraged to apply by some in Noblesville who know what my values are and what I am passionate about in my community,” Sheller stated. “I will have much to learn about the library board and the responsibilities that come with that position, and I intend to jump into that right away.”

Sheller declined to comment about her position on library policies. She stated that “it would be very foolish of me” to comment without all the information and background.

The Hamilton County Council took applications for Beckwith’s replacement through Jan. 25. Council President Amy Massillamany said the council received 37 applications.

Tim Griffin said the council wanted to appoint someone who represents the majority of Hamilton County. “(An election administrator like Sheller) is somebody that’s going to have to work with kind of everyone,” Griffin said. “You’re going to work with both sides of the table.”

The next Hamilton County Council meeting is at 7 p.m. March 6 at 1 Hamilton County Square. The next HEPL board meeting is at 6:15 p.m. Feb. 22 at 1 Library Plaza in Noblesville.

Fishers police investigate fatal crash — A 40-year-old Indianapolis man was killed in a car crash that took place in Fishers just after midnight Feb. 9 on E. 96th Street near the Ind. 69 South entrance. Police report that a 2014 Ford Mustang and a 2009 GMC Yukon were the only two vehicles involved.

Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital, where Christopher Brown, the GMC driver, died from his injuries. According to a news release from the Fishers Police Department, the driver of the Mustang may have been driving under the influence and speeding. Police are withholding that driver’s identity pending toxicology screening results and a review by the Hamilton County prosecutor. Fishers Police continue to investigate the crash. Witnesses are asked to call Lt. Kevin Kobli at 317-595-3300.

SPRINGBOARD TO SUCCESS Fishers High School graduate ready to dive into U.S. Olympic Trials

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com To say IUPUI diver Sebastian Otero dominated his first year in the Horizon League would be an understatement.

Otero, now a sophomore, was a six-time Horizon League Men’s Diver of the Week during the 2022-23 season. The 2022 Fishers High School graduate was a Horizon League Freshman of the Year and Championship Diver of the Meet at the 2023 Horizon League championships. He was named IUPUI’s Male Freshman of the Year in 2023.

“I’ve improved the most in just the confidence in myself,” Otero said.

That showed as Otero qualified for the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials, winning the 3-meter event with a score of 398.85 at the USA Diving Winter National Championships Nov. 29 in Knoxville, Tenn. The U.S. Olympic Diving Trials are set for June 17-23 in Knoxville.

“Honestly, I just want to do my best and have fun,” Otero said. “I don’t want to get too starstruck by the competition. I want to enjoy the experience. The Trials are going to be something different. There is a lot on the line. People’s dreams are going to come true. I feel it will be a good competitive atmosphere. I don’t think I’ve ever been in an atmosphere quite like that.”

Otero has continued his success this season — he was named Horizon League Diver of the week four times. He has set his sights on continuing that success at the NCAA Championships.

“He’s made the most improvement in his overall degree of difficulty and his confidence in performing those highly difficult dives,” IUPUI coach Eric Barnes said.

Otero started diving at age 11.

“I played every sport, and diving was one that I found myself pretty decent at, so I just stuck with it,” Otero said. “Eric provided me the opportunity to dive at the (NCAA Division I) level.”

Otero played soccer until he was 13.

“Going into high school, I was focused on diving,” he said.

Otero improved each year at the IHSAA boys swimming and diving state finals at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI. He was seventh as a sophomore in the 1-meter diving state finals, sixth as a junior and seventh as a sophomore.

“I thought any competition experience would be good, so if it was the 1-meter for high school, I found it beneficial to get extra reps in,” said Otero, who also was a member

Kudos to him, because he figured a few things out. From that point forward, it’s just like building blocks, and then you see how far it can go. He’s experienced in his time here substantial growth and he’s handling all of that extremely well. Camp Cathedral offers variety of enrichment, sports sessions

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Camp Cathedral’s Anthony Ernst is convinced there is a reason many of its 80-plus summer camps sell out quickly.

“Our camps are in high demand, and we sell out a number of them,” said Ernst, the director of summer programs. “One of the reasons the enrichment camps are in high demand is that people know the quality of our camps. They love the idea that their child is not stuffed into a room with 30 or 40 other kids. They are in a camp with 12 to 15 kids in it. There is plenty of counselor supervision and interaction with their children. The kids have a great time and get to know their counselors well.

The kids get to know the smaller group of kids they attend the camp with, and I think that’s one of the major benefits of Camp Cathedral is we are small on purpose.”

Camps are broken down by age groups from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Although many camps have sold out, Ernst said there are still several middle school camps remaining, including competitive speech camp, Minecraft, show choir, creative and drama.

Ernst said two new middle school camps, fifth through eighth grade, with room are the media, podcast and broadcasting camp and exploring the world of dance camp.

Another popular camp with openings is aviation and flight engineering.

“They go out and learn at the Mt. Comfort Airport,” Ernst said. “They get to get inside a plane. They don’t fly but they learn what goes on with a flight and the maintenance of flight and engineering of flight. They build rockets and models. They take a tour of a jet. It’s sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol.”

A cross country distance camp and a hurdlers camp for middle school students have replaced the track and field camp, Ernst said.

There is a new exploring the world of dance camp.

“Last year, we added a couple new sessions of our science camp,” Ernst said. “We added an early child introduction to science camp. We offered an additional arts camp.”

Ernst said the safari camp for little kids always seems to sell out along with filmmakers camp for middle school students.

“The robotics and Minecraft camps are always popular,” Ernst said.

Another popular camp is American Girl for kindergarten through third grade.

“The girls bring their doll along and they design accessories throughout the week,” Ernst said. “Each day has a theme based on one of the historical American Girl dolls.

They interact with our counselors and they create these accessories, clothing and other crafted items.”

A new camp added last year was pirates, ninjas and wizards for younger ages.

“It’s a new adventure every day and using imagination,” Ernst said. “Kids get to be creative and do crafts, everything from a physical fitness obstacle course to making magic potions to creating a disguise.”

Ernst said Cathedral High School has a strong reputation in sports and Camp Cathedral offers sessions in every IHSAA sport.

Noblesville actress takes challenge of playing ‘Violet’ in CCP production

The Noblesville resident MUSICAL plays the title role in Carmel Community Players’ production of “Violet” March 1-10 at The Switch Theatre, 10029 E. 126th St., Suite D, Fishers.

“She’s a very deep character,” she said.

“I tend to do a lot of very comedic characters, so it’s it’s a very different play for me to be doing a more serious character and be able to show a little bit more of an emotional range than being somebody who’s just there to kind of make the audience laugh and bring brevity.”

Violet has a huge scar on her face and is traveling to seek a miracle cure from a TV preacher. Set in 1964 during the early days of the Civil Rights Movement, Violet waits for a bus in Spruce Pine, N.C., and encounters two soldiers.

“She’s gone through this very traumatic experience when she was a young girl and has always been kind of trying to figure out, ‘Why me? Why did this happen to me?’ She’s held on to a lot of anger throughout her life,” Marone-Sowers said.

“She’s trying to get herself healed from what she thinks physically healing will kind of solve all of her troubles and it’s her emotional journey of going through and just kind of figuring out what’s her place in life. That’s more than just the girl with the scar.”

Violet was hit in the face with an ax blade.

“It’s kind of left up to the imagination of the audience for their own interpretation on what they view would be this disfiguring scar to them because it varies from person to person on what they would view,” said Marone-Sowers, a 2007 Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate.

“I actually had a very minor scar on my cheek when I was about 8 years old, but when I was young, it was all I could ever see. As I’ve gotten older, it’s gotten smaller, it’s diminished, it’s healed. It’s not as

big a deal but when I was young, that’s all I used to be able to see on my face.”

One challenge is there is a lot of music in her role and Marone-Sowers said she has worked to be strong enough vocally to sing through the whole show.

Marone-Sowers, who is on the stage for all but about three minutes, said there are a couple of emotional scenes that will be challenging Marone-Sowers is making her CCP debut.

“I’ve worked with (director) Kathleen Horrigan before at Footlight numerous times and I saw she was directing ‘Violet,’” she said. “I wanted the opportunity to work with her again because she’s just so amazing.”

Marone-Sowers had never seen the musical, but when she researched it, she wanted to play Violet.

“It’s interesting to play what I would say is a Benny Hinn-type character,” Fleshood said. “Somebody who is there to what she thinks will provide hope, but ends up being more of a sham.”

Horrigan, who retired as a Lawrence Central High School theater teacher in May 2023, directed CCP’s “Tick, Tick …Boom!” In 2022.

The Fishers resident said “Violet’ was a musical she wanted to direct.

“You know how hard it is to look at someone that is scarred or disabled physically, but also the scars inside that we carry with us,” Horrigan said. “And, of course, that scar was inside of her as well as she thought she was extremely ugly when she was really a beautiful person inside. She felt that no one would see that because her father didn’t really recognize that and nor to the community. Her whole life, she’s never felt like she was attractive to anyone until she gets on this bus.

These two soldiers both kind of vie for her.”

One of the soldiers is Black, which creates another issue in a era when interracial marriage wasn’t legal in all states until 1967.
