Family farm remains as Geist grows By Beth Clark • news@geistcurrent.com Tom Flanagan and his wife Mary Beth (Bolander) reside on the Hancock County homestead on Rt. 1000 N. that has been in Mary Beth’s family history for four generations. The farm was the recipient of a Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial award, which means the state recognizes that the property has been in the same family for over 150 years. The original 120-acre property was deeded in 1836, the year Vernon Township was organized. The deed to the property, proudly in Mary Beth’s possession, was signed by then VicePresident Martin van Buren. The farm was handed down over the years to members of the Bolander and Cushman families and some acreage was sold off to relatives; Mary Beth and her sister are the last of the Bolander family to be connected with the remaining 84 acre property. In days past, crops were grown on the farm and livestock raised, including dairy cows (Holstein and Guernsey), horses, and at one time, over 10,000 chickens. The Flanagans graciously consented to an interview to relate stories about the farm, during the course of which Mary Beth revealed that not a single chicken is to be found on the property. Having spent her childhood and a good portion of her adulthood on the farm surrounded by chickens, she no longer has any desire to keep them. Farm fresh eggs are purchased elsewhere. Tom and Mary Beth attended Fortville High School together, and Tom even worked on Mary Beth’s family’s farm when he was a teenager, but the two were introduced at church youth group. They spent a number of years of their married life away from the farm, but when they returned, they built their own house on the property. Very early structures on the property no longer remain; the original farmhouse was destroyed by fire around 1900. The two barns still standing date from the early 20th century, as does the main farmhouse, rebuilt after the fire. The Flanagan’s daughter Kimberly, son-in-law Brendan Hartnett, and two grandchildren now live in the farmhouse, which was recently gutted and renovated to bring it up to code. The property today serves as a hobby farm for both the Flanagans and the Hartnetts who share the land. A couple of horses and cows are kept and some hay is grown. When asked the greatest challenge a small family farm must face, Tom replied,
Cider making in 1800s. (Photos courtesy by Tom Flanagan
Fourth-generation family farm remains as Geist area grows.
“Trying to keep it in the family without it becoming a financial burden. Family farms are disappearing; it’s hard to earn any living at it. Taxes alone are a strain and encroachment carries liabilities.” Legislation that allows small farms tax benefits for things like heritage barn preservation is very important to the Flanagans. Encroachment, new property development near farms, is a familiar occurrence in Vernon Township, especially in McCordsville. The risk it carries is that of complaints against existing family farms for things like the smell and noise of livestock. “New property owners can file complaints and suddenly a farm that raised cattle for 200 years can be forced to get rid of its animals,” Tom explained. Tom and Mary Beth, fully aware of the risks and challenges, are committed to doing all they can to keep their farm in the family.

Winter hot spot Music, parties and weeknight themes keep Bella Vita Lakeside busy during winter months\ By Beth Taylor • beth@youarecurrent.com
Bella Vita Lakeside
With a location overlooking Geist Reservoir, Bella Vita Lakeside is known as the place to be on a Cover story warm summer’s evening. Live music and special events keep the restaurant just as inviting during the cold winter months. “We’re at a central location where everyone wants be. Our guests like to come in and have a cocktail or a beer, and they don’t have to go all the way to 96th Street,” said Tyler Garner, general manager of Bella Vita Lakeside. “We’re not tablecloth fine dining; we’re upscale casual dining.” On Friday and Saturday nights, the restaurant provides live music to entertain guests while they relax and dine. The main floor bar area has ten flat screen TVs--ideal for those interested in viewing sports. “The circular bar is perfect for viewing games,” said Garner. Locals frequent Bella Vita, giving it a neighborhood watering hole appeal. “We get quite a few regulars who come in once or twice each week, so we train our staff to ensure that every server is up to our standards,” said Garner. Bella Vita’s mostly Italian-inspired menu also offers a wide range of traditional favorites such as expertly prepared filet mignon and notable lobster mac and cheese.

“I enjoy coming here,” said Ed Joliffe, a Bella Vita regular. “It’s great food, and it’s just an enjoyable place to be.” The glass-enclosed atrium has a dramatic open fireplace. “Even in the winter, guests can sit in the atrium and be warm and cozy while looking at the water,” said Garner. The Geist-area hot spot can be reserved for private parties for receptions and special events, with enough space to accommodate 500 people. “The restaurant’s layout allows for a couple of different ways to utilize private space while still enabling customers to enjoy the atmosphere,” said Garner. Guests enjoying a private party on the mezzanine get a view of the restaurant below. Geist resident Jim Shelton enjoyed having his retirement party at Bella Vita. “This is a great place to be, so I thought it was a good location for a party,” Shelton said. Shelton was celebrating passing on his
business, Shelton Machinery, which he founded in 1988, to his son Nick Shelton and his son-in-law Jeff Tucker. Garner enjoys accommodating patrons’ requests. “We had a marriage proposal here a couple of weeks ago,” he said. “We spelled out Will You Marry Me on a table with rose petals. She said, ‘yes’,” Garner said. “The couple came here when they first started dating, so it was a special connection. I was happy to help arrange it.” The restaurant erupted in applause for the couple as patrons watched the event unfold. “People were taking photos with their cellphones. It was a memorable night for the couple.” To keep customers coming in, each weeknight has a special offering. When an adult entrée is purchased, kids eat free on Mondays and Tuesdays--typically the slowest nights of the week. Five dollar martinis on Wednesdays and half off the price of selected wines on Thursdays fill out the week. On Sundays, Bella Vita offers brunch accompanied by live jazz. “From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., we offer an amazing brunch. Our buffet includes all the favorites as well as some specialty items,” said Garner. Garner was hired as Bella Vita’s general manager three months ago. He’s planning exterior updates to the building this spring. “When the warmer weather returns, we have new events planned to utilize our outdoor space,” he said.

Thrilled to be a part of this community! Greetings, Geist region! What you’re holding in your hands is what readers and advertisers asked us to provide. We’re only happy to do so. We’re thrilled to be able to deliver Current in Geist to you each Tuesday by mail and free of charge. About that last part: You receive Current for free, because our advertising partners, which we hope you will frequent, make it possible. Needless to say, a debt of gratitude is due to each of them. The newspaper was conceived with you in mind. As was the case with its predecessors – Current in Carmel (October 2006), Current in Westfield (January 2008), Current in Noblesville (September 2009), Current in Fishers (January 2011) and Current in Zionsville (March 2012) - this edition, and those that will follow, is built from the results of independent comprehensive marketplace research. The results told us what you wanted in your local-local, hometown newspaper (and also that which you did not want), and so we’ve done exactly as you asked. Around here, we’re fond of saying, “News is what our readers say it is.” We also walk our talk. Try us out. Send us your news, tips, photographs, calendar items, letters and anything else you believe we should share with your fellow Geist residents. Guest columns? Yes, absolutely. The address: beth@youarecurrent.com; that’s Beth Taylor, our Current in Geist managing editor, who has been on the case since early December, actually. We’re heartened by the warm receptions we’ve experienced across the area, and we’re looking forward to serving you with distinction long into the future. What we ask you to embrace is this notion: Current in Geist is YOUR newspaper; we’re simply its loyal stewards. We invite your feedback at info@youarecurrent.com. You’ll find us to be involved, corporate citizens, and we have a hard time saying “no” to anything that benefits the area. All of us here at Current Publishing are ecstatic to finally be a part of the Geist fabric. Brian Kelly, publisher, and Steve Greenberg, general manager, are co-owners of Current Publishing, LLC. The gap of the gaps
Commentary by Terry Anker
The American founders knew it. Even the modern, liberal French know it. The distinction between a mob and a populist revolution is a narrow one. Contemporary French journalist and politician Jean-Francois Revel illustrates the point beautifully: “A human group transforms itself into a crowd when it suddenly responds to a suggestion rather than to reasoning, to an image rather than to an idea, to an affirmation rather than to proof, to the repetition of a phrase rather than to arguments, to prestige rather than to competence.” Rich! Wealthy! Income disparity! Income divide! If these words are meant to sting, does our leadership hope to foment classism? If so, is it warranted and rightly defined? Who are these “rich” people? President Barack Obama has chosen a combined annual household income of $250,000 to be the metric. He points to the very real gap from the median showing that those higher wage earners eclipse their fellow Americans by almost 6 times. Assuming that the math is cor-
rect, what is the context of this contrast? A Gallup poll in 2013 of median incomes globally places the United States sixth highest at $43,585 with Burundi the lowest at $673. In other words, the median American family expects income 65 times of that in the comparison country. Moreover, this income number excludes the enormous infrastructure, safety-net, education and other advantages found in the U.S. The gap of the gaps is over 11 times. Our own author, Mark Twain, said “Few things are more irritating than when someone who is wrong is also very effective in making his point.” Even as our own misguided Robin Hoods attempt to equalize inequality, are we spending too much time looking at those whom we believe have more and not enough time caring for those whom we know have less? Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. You may e-mail him at terry@currentincarmel. com.
Q U O T E O F T H E W E E K We ourselves feel what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop. – Mother Teresa
I’ve been struggling for topics of late but was holding on to the notion that dance competition season would soon be starting and I’d have a plethora of tacky, delicious stories to relay. But alas, either I’m a seasoned veteran with the super-hero ability to ignore the highpitch antics of several hundred overly-rouged, be-sequenced ‘tweenagers’ and their obnoxious, also-sometimes-sparkling mothers, or, this past weekend was tame when compared to last year’s nearly-traumatic introduction to competitive dance. My youngest started dancing just two years ago. Having myself never been a dancer or anything that required extensive parental involvement and “judging” to determine the winner, I nearly stroked out at her first competition last January. The make-up, the false hair and the myriad of shoes and tights and bandeaus all came as quite a shock, and that was just the moms! You should have seen their daughters! Not to mention the way scores are calculated and awards are bestowed ... a judge doesn’t like your costume so she deducts points? What kind of nonsense is that? And the unfamiliar terminology had my head spinning. Lyrical, contemporary, grand line, production, minis, juniors, adagios … a whole new vocabulary world big-banged into existence as soon as I set foot in that often-terrifying convention space. I saw choreographers yelling at high schoolers, mothers violently applying lipstick to toddlers, and dads stumbling around aimlessly no doubt wondering what they’d done to be cast down into such a low level of female hell. I temporarily lost hearing in one ear after repeated screeches of “Nail it, Kayla!” and almost went blind from over-exposure to under-clothed (but well-endowed) tappers. And I wasted hours upon hours of quality weekend time that could have otherwise been spent binge-watching Downton Abby, waiting for my daughter to perform her three-minute jazz number. When we finally made it home that Sunday, I was ready to pull her from the team and return to the frozen fields of youth soccer. This year, at the same competition in the same hotel, with Maddie actually dancing twice the number of routines, I actually enjoyed myself. I knew to bring a good book, to retreat to my “quiet space” if I felt edgy, and to appreciate the weekend for what it was- a chance for my girl to do what she loves most. I guess I’ve simply mellowed out. Was there dressing-room drama? Absolutely! Did I have a slight ringing in my ears after the third awards ceremony of the day? Indeed I did. But I came away surprisingly rested and of course, feeling extremely proud of my daughter. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. You may e-mail her at danielle@currentincarmel.com.

Five lives intersect at Belfry’s latest show, ‘Bus Stop’
By Robert Herrington • robert@youarecurrent.com
In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning. A nightclub chanteuse is being pursued and kidnapped Theater by a 21-year-old cowboy with romantic intents; the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the cafe also gets her first taste of romance. “It’s a little touch of what life used to be in 1955,” said Connie Murello-Todd, director of “Bus Stop.” “Some of the things they talk about still ring true and some things … life was so much simpler then.” For its 50th season, The Belfry Theatre is reproducing shows from its history. “Bus Stop” was originally produced for the 19831984 season and directed by Jim Bray. This year’s show runs Jan. 30 through Feb. 15. “This was the one that stood out for me,” Murello-Todd said. “Marilyn Monroe starred in the movie and I just thought it was cute. I just enjoyed it when I read it.” Staying true to its timeframe has caused the cast some issues with props. “They didn’t know you had to use opposing thumbs to unlatch the suitcase. They’d never seen a rotary dial telephone and didn’t know how to use the coffee maker,” Murello-Todd said. “It’s been fun to bring them into the ’50s. The first time Rose (Franzen) couldn’t get into the refrigerator because it latched was a hoot.” The cast includes a group of veteran actors like John Whitaker and Ryan Shelton and newcomers to the Belfry stage like Addison D. Ahrendts, Rose Franzen and James Maratea. “It has been one of the easiest shows I’ve directed,” MurelloTodd said. “It’s a very professional group and we’ve been able to dive into character development, nuances and gestures which we normally don’t have time to do.” Returning to the Belfry stage after a long hiatus is Jeff Maess, who last appeared in “Light up the Sky.” “That was about 30 years ago,” Maess said, adding he has acted

in five other shows at different theaters since that time. “I’ve been interested in coming back. I saw their schedule and was interested in this show and next one, ‘Noises Off.’” Maess said the script for “Bus Stop” is one reason he auditioned and enjoys the show. “The thing that stands out for me is how well written it is,” he said. “I’ve been in different shows and learning lines, a well written show makes it that much easier.” For his role as Virgil Blessing, Maess had to learn how to play the guitar. “All the other guys in the case can play the guitar except for me,” he said. “They’ve been helpful.”

Ice fishing tips By Melissa Hicks Enjoy an outdoor winter past-time on frozen Geist Reservoir. If you are on the reservoir fishing, follow these Department of National Resource tips: 1. Drill your own test hole near shore. Your test hole should show at least a four-inch thickness of clear ice like you get from your freezer. 2. Wear a life jacket for extra warmth. 3. Be aware of various ice strengths and
qualities. One area of a pond may be a foot thick while another spot of ice may only be an inch thick. 4. Ice strength can also change. Thick ice is rotten after rain. Old honey-combed ice, slush ice or ice with current under it is also dangerous. New ice is almost always stronger that old ice. Wind, waterfowl and beavers can also keep areas of ice thin. 5. Indiana law limits ice fishing holes to a diameter of twelve inches. 6. Fishing shanties must have reflectors on each side so snowmobiles won’t crash into them at dusk or during snowstorms.

Avoiding the tax deferral dilemma Commentary by Joseph Clark In the present moment, an individual’s decision to elect deferring taxes via a 401k or traditional IRA plan seems approprisavings ate. Tax-deferred savings reduce taxable income in the current year. However, predicting and understanding the impact of that tax deferral during retirement becomes more complex. Deposits into tax-deferred accounts occur during an individual’s working years. Typically, savers are married and filing a joint tax return. In contrast, the largest required minimum distributions occur when individuals are older, and often widowed. Consequently, money can be deferred at lower marginal tax rates and withdrawn at higher rates. Pundits disagree, arguing that both spouses previously had higher incomes, may still be working and tax deferral makes sense. Such perspective may have been true in an era when the largest source of an investor’s retirement income was a pension and the benefit was reduced or remained the same upon the death of a spouse. However, that is not the case today with a defined contribution plan or IRA. As we age, the required minimum distribution increases. For more than 25 years I have witnessed families save diligently, planning to use their tax-
deferred resources to fund an enjoyable life after work. The account often becomes a safety net rather than an opportunity for enhanced retirement. Fear and frustration set in whenever the account value drops, regardless of the reason. The drive to protect the account balance keeps most individuals from touching their tax-deferred plans until they reach the required minimum distribution age. At age 70.5, people begin taking small distributions that increase annually as the percentage of the account withdrawn grows. Sadly, one spouse will pass away and the surviving spouse generally inherits the entire account. The amount of the withdrawal required on a percentage basis will continue to change each year just as it would have if the spouse were still alive. But the tax bracket may change dramatically. In the present moment, tax deferral will usually feel better. However, when considering the journey of life, the decision to defer or not demands thoughtful discussion. Taxes do matter! By Holly Kline • news@currentinfishers.com
Dottie Couture Boutique has moved into downtown Fishers and offers a new place to shop for women’s clothing now open and accessories. Located at 8594 East 116th St. on the ground floor of the new Depot building, Dottie Couture Boutique is likely to be one of the main draws to the expanding downtown area. Dottie Couture Boutique, or DCB, is owned by Fishers resident Brooke Magdzinski. The business started in 2010 with a store in Greenwood and a successful website. The Indianapolis DCB opened two years ago, and the Fishers location opened on Jan. 17. “I think Dottie Couture has the small boutique feel, but a fashion forward style that you cannot find anywhere else,” said Magdzinski. “Women like to shop, and by making things affordable, they are able to do it often at DCB. Customers love our private shopping parties where women shop at a discount with a group of friends,” she continued. Dottie Couture has already enjoyed a warm welcome in Fishers with a successful opening day and customers that are excited for the new store at The Depot building. “I love this store! Dottie purchases are taking up my whole closet,” stated Fishers resident Jenny Schermerhorn. “It’s my ‘go to’ place when shopping. I’m thrilled their new location in Fishers just opened.”

Locally made Ambre Blends roll-on-oils, $8 fleece-lined leggings and tops and dresses in the $18-$45 range are some of the most popular items with customers. “We receive new arrivals every day to keep the boutique fresh, unique and new; after all, that is the fun of boutique shopping.” Magdzinski said. The famous Sparta warriors of ancient Greece based their training on discipline for military warfare, SPARTA Sports Training and fitness Fitness Facility bases theirs on speed, performance, agility and reaction at their Fisher’s training academy. “To go along with our name SPARTA, we have developed the 300 Fit program,” Brian Griffitts, one of the owners and trainers said. “Each class will have 300 repetitions as a part of the workout and may consist of multiple routines within the 60 minute session.” According to Griffitts “the 300 workouts are high intensity, low impact workouts designed to build muscle, increase endurance and strip fat FAST. Workouts may consist of kettle bells, dumb bells, battling ropes, sled pushes, core work and much more.” SPARTA has designed the 300 Fit workouts for their customers by rotating the type of workout
each day. “The adult workout has it all, low density, meaning low impact, high intensity that is easy on joints, in all areas of sports. We use a variety of tools, such as suspension training, kettle bells, weights, battling ropes, so every workout is different, keeping people engaged and excited about their training,” said Griffitts. Erin Wagner, a 300 Fit instructor, mostly hears how great this class is and unintimidating it is. “The thing I hear most from our clients is how encouraging everyone in the class is,” Wagner said. Her clients said to her that they all have fitness goals, whether they are to lose weight or to improve our overall fitness and 300 Fit is a challenging class, that’s why they love it. “When you are surrounded by people who are all working towards pushing themselves to do their best it makes you want to push yourself even harder.” For more information go to www.spartaindy. com.
Bottom line: Don’t hibernate
Commentary by Kathleen Connelly
In Fishers we have had two snow days off of school already. The first the kids and I hibernated like bears due to the cold temperatures but the second day was warm enough to fitness send my kiddos outdoors. Yay! It got me thinking about what I am going to do with these kids all winter to keep them active? They are participating in sports like gymnastics and basketball. If you are like me though you don’t let your kids spend the remaining hours of the day playing Madden 15, despite my son’s pleas, or watching movies. I am also aware of many adults that made the New Year’s resolution to lose weight. I don’t like that resolution but that is a topic for a different day. I do think adults can improve their own activity while finding activities for their kids, too. Recreation Unlimited has open hours to play on their swing set equipment, basketball goals and trampolines. Adults play for free when you pay for a child to play. What about indoor rock
climbing? Adults and children can learn and have fun climbing indoor walls at Climb Time Indy or Hoosier Heights in Indianapolis. My 9-year-old son has started to enjoy laser tag and this is another activity that the whole family can play together. Skyzone in Fishers offers open jump hours all week for adults and kids. Even if you have toddlers, an adult can jump with a purchased toddler ticket on Friday mornings The bottom line, we don’t have to hibernate during these winter months and the chosen activity doesn’t have to be just for the kids. One of my favorite quotes is by Charles Shaefer, “We are never more fully, more completely ourselves or more deeply engrossed in anything, than when we are at play.” Kathleen M. New Flourish Yoga + Wellbeing owner helps clients find balance By Beth Taylor • beth@youarecurrent.com
Erin Smith found a yoga community at Flourish Yoga + Wellbeing on the southeast side of Fishers worth the drive from fitness her Noblesville home. Instructor and owner Amy Lin Thomas’ open-hearted nature helped to create a yoga studio where clients became extended family members. When Thomas decided to move to Hawaii to be closer to her mom, she looked to sell to someone who would love the community as much as she did. With an interest in business ownership and a passion for yoga, Smith knew that this opportunity was the right fit. Thomas embraced the ideas for growth that Smith envisioned for Flourish; transitioning the business between friends was easy. “I discovered yoga in 2000, and there weren’t as many studios as there are now, said Smith. I didn’t grow up in the yoga culture, but I felt like it was calling me. I started practicing Ashtanga and loved it,” said Erin Smith. Learning yoga lead to finding balance for Smith. “It just allows me to have the foundation of health to participate in my life to the fullest, whether that be playing with my kids, jumping on a trampoline or running with my dog,” she said. Smith explained that she feels calm and relaxed yet invigorated after practicing yoga. “I had so much energy that I felt that I could jump on top of a building,” said Smith. After years as a three-sport athlete, she enjoys the fresh feeling of a yoga workout without the abuse on the body. “On a physical level, yoga is a blend of cardiovascular training, strength training and stretching. Yoga is low to no impact, and

because you use your own body weight, you can easily add or subtract intensity, reducing risk of injury,” she said. Flourish offers several classes, including hot and warm Vinyasa yoga, Ashtanga yoga and gentle Hatha options as well as prenatal classes and yoga classes for kids. “Many people are intrigued by the hot yoga, but it’s best to work up to it,” Smith said. The studio in the warm class is 85 to 90 degrees and is designed to help students get used to heat. For hot yoga, the room is set to 100 degrees. “Heat makes your more body more flexible and also makes you more mentally flexible, as well,” she said. For more information on Flourish Yoga + Wellbeing, go to www.flourishyoga.biz
Erin Smith’s Top 5 things every yogi should have: 1. A good yoga mat: “The Mat” by Lululemon and “Black Mat Pro” by Manduka are among my favorites. Until you are ready to invest, grab a “Yogitoes Towel”. This thin, absorbent towel slides over a mat and the other side has little nubs that help keep the towel in place and is machine washable. 2. Comfortable yoga clothes: The biggest question I am asked by new yogis is, “what should I wear to class?” Comfort is key when practicing yoga and it’s important that your outfit stays put (we are upside down a lot). Some of my favorites lines are Lululemon, Hard Tail and Athletica. 3. An inspirational book: Yoga is a never ending journey of learning. “Yoga, The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness” by Erich Schiffmann, will give you daily inspiration and is our book of the month for the Flourish Book Club. Visit our website for more information. 4. A healthy daily ritual: By doing a daily self massage using Earthly Body’s “Glow Oil” you are receiving multiple health benefits through your largest organ, your skin. Featuring plant
oils like hemp, coconut, and palm; this oil is easy to use and smells amazing. 5. A feel good accessory: The “Vinyasa Scarf” by Lululemon will keep you looking chic and feeling cozy as you make your way to and from the studio. Check out the YouTube video which helps you to master 10 different ways to wear this versatile and functional piece.

Expect more for outdoor living opportunities Commentary by Randy Sorrell
Seal Cove is a throwback horror story with just the right mix of contemporary humor, smarts, and monster gore. It’s an engaging novel that will have enthusiastic readers saying, “Finally, a horror story void of vampires, werewolves, or zombies!” Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Available in paperback at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.

Congratulations and welcome to the inaugural addition of Current in Geist. Get ready for one of the nations leading and most indoors successful community newspapers. Of course, I am biased, having been part of the launch of their first of now six community newspapers as a writer and then advertiser, eight growing years ago. HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM CURRENT: Thoughtful community involvement, relevant community content, delivered weekly to your mailbox, a staff and leadership that cares / listens / responds to your feedback and a very fun read. Still a print newspaper junkie, I dig the morning WSJ and even the Star. But the most anticipated ink of the week arrives Tuesdays from Current. INCREDIBLE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES: So who the heck am I and what is this bi-monthly article about? I’ve been called a landscaper (not), a community activist / leader and a hurried husband of 32 years with three amazing daughters. But for your purposes, I’m the incredibly fortunate founder of SURROUNDINGS by NatureWorks, a serial entrepreneur with over 21 years in the “green industry”. HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT IN THESE ARTICLES: frequent updates on gutsy outdoor living trends, guidance on forward thinking material selection, opinions on outdoor furniture and

stimulating discussions and pictures on incredible outdoor living spaces. Spaces that we have designed and built! Outdoor living spaces often means something different to each person. For some, a simple concrete patio with subtle landscaping is appropriate. Others feel compelled to appreciate a deck or elegant stone patio. Most, however, dream of something more grand…an outdoor living space spiked with amenities like an edgy cedar pergola
offering dappled shade or a formal lanais, colorful landscapes hugging a fire feature that all the family and neighbors can enjoy. Get ready. You are going to love it!! Design statement: Consider a custom range hood?
Commentary by David Decker
Although it’s not always seen as flashy or exciting, a range hood is actually one of the most important appliances found in the kitchen. Range hoods typically consist of two indoors parts. First, there is a canopy or overhang that works to capture the smoke, steam, heat and air pollution caused by cooking. Then, a fan or blower extracts all of those pollutants and pushes them out of the kitchen and through the ventilation system. Many range hoods also feature lighting that can aid with cooking tasks. Without a range hood, cooking in the kitchen becomes a big hassle, as all of the byproducts of your tasty meals, such as heat, steam, smoke and grease, stay trapped in your home. A powerful hood is designed to create a source of fresh air to flow into the kitchen, while also vacuuming up cooking contaminants. They leave your kitchen with improved air quality, and less of that sticky buildup around the cooking area that becomes a pain during cleanup time. But you don’t need to be a professional chef to install a highquality range hood. In fact, many homeowners today are choosing to install custom designed range hoods that function both as an integral part of their day-to-day cooking, while also adding a touch of style or elegance to the overall look of the kitchen. If you’re considering a custom-built range hood, there are literally thousands of designs that you could use as inspirational starting points. Range hoods come in a variety of construction styles. However, it’s important to remember that full-sized hoods often have more suction and power than the smaller models that fit underneath cabinetry. In the case of range hoods, the larger, higher quality models are often well worth the investment. Remember, any oils or cooking debris that is not captured by the hood can

end up on your cabinets, countertops and flooring. Range hoods can be constructed from nearly any material imaginable. That’s where you have the freedom to get creative! Many homeowners choose to design custom hood designs that match the material or style of their kitchen cabinetry. You could also choose a material that really stands out against the rest of your kitchen.

What To Expect: Parenting Coordination A recent, positive trend in Indiana family law cases, as well as several other states, has been the appointment of a parenting coordinator in high conflict situations. Typically a mental health professional or a lawyer, a parenting coordinator or “PC” is an individual appointed by order of court and charged with managing on-going issues between parents (and others) in cases with constant and substantial disputes involving child custody and parenting time issues. Either party may petition the Court to appoint a parenting coordinator or if the concur that their situation would benefit from the involvement of the PC, the parties can submit an agreement to appoint one, including selecting the PC. What is a PC’s role? The Order of the Court will have considerable detail as to the extent and limitations of the duties of the PC. Depending on the level appointed, the PC may have the ability to act as a communication facilitator, an ongoing mediator and even, essentially, an arbitrator. As a general rule, the PC cannot modify the court order. For example, the coordinator may recommend a different weekly parenting time schedule, however, does not have the authority to modify the amount of time each parent has with the child(ren). All recommendations of the PC require approval of the Court to go into effect and each party has the opportunity to contest these before the judge, if desired. As the goal is to help the parties effectively co-parent and address issues which may arise from time to time, the parenting coordinator typically meets with both parties regularly, receives day-to-day questions and complaints about any aspect of a party's conduct, gather information from outside sources (schools, doctors, counselors, etc.) and works with the parties, first looking for a consensus or at least a basic agreement. If this is not successful, the PC may choose to inform the parties of what the PC
believes is in the best interests of the children in the hopes of pushing the parties to an agreement. Last, the PC may submit their recommendations to the Court if no agreement is possible. In Indiana, there are several levels of authority in Indiana for PCs. A Level III Parenting Coordinator is the most frequent choice, holding a high level of authority and may make binding recommendations to the parties on the issues presented for consideration. A binding recommendation may only later be set aside by a Court Order after one party formally objects to the recommendations by filing an objection with the Court. Further, parties should be mindful that the parenting coordinator can later testify in court about the non-compliance or other issues which may arise during the sessions. How much will this cost? Parenting Coordinators are most often attorneys and charge parents for the time involved in addressing the issues presented. The typical Court order will have the parents sharing the costs such that they are both “invested” in the process. As part of their authority, however, the PC may have the ability to reapportion costs if one party’s lack of cooperation is clearly a primary issue and the source of a disproportionate amount of the costs. At Hollingsworth & Zivitz, P.C., our team has the experience, the understanding, and the compassion to assist with your family law needs. If you have questions or concerns regarding divorce, custody, support, or any other family law concerns contact our firm at 317.DIVORCE or visit our website at www.hzlegal.com.
