Former WWE ‘heel’ now selling homes in Fishers By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com Like other Realtors, Kevin Fertig is dealing with the challenges of guiding clients through a hot real estate SPORTS market. Unlike his peers, Fertig once walked, with entrance music blaring, toward center stage at Detroit’s Ford Field to compete in Wrestlemania 23 as more than 80,000 people cheered and jeered him on. “There’s no cooler feeling in the world knowing that all eyes are on you,” Fertig, 44, said of that walk out. “Unless you’ve ever done it, you’ll never understand it. It’s electrifying.” Fertig, recognized in wrestling circles by the persona of vampire “Kevin Thorn,” wrestled in every U.S. state except Alaska and in most major venues overseas. Locally, he competed in Bankers Life Fieldhouse so many times that he knows the tunnels underneath the stands like the back of his hand. But for the last 3 1/2 years, Fertig, a Fishers resident for approximately 18 years, has been selling real estate. He works for RE/MAX, 5645 Castle Creek Pkwy N. Dr., in Indianapolis. “I love to see what kind of smiles I can put on people’s faces,” Fertig said. “You’re helping someone accomplish something that they might have never thought they could — buying a home.” Fertig, who no longer wrestles professionally (he left the WWE in 2009 but occasionally dons an old persona for an amateur match) had been working at a bar in Noblesville but was looking for a career change. He never had trouble landing job interviews but was often told — after discussing his wrestling career — that his lack of a college degree left him ineligible for the position. He had begun wrestling shortly after high school. But Fertig, a husband and father of a 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter, discovered working in real estate was different. He learned if he could work hard and study, he could earn a license and begin a career as a Realtor. The opportunity to succeed on his own merits appealed to him. “Real estate is a sink or swim thing, and that’s what I’ve always done the best at in my life,” he said. ‘No sense to stop now’ Fertig became interested in professional wrestling as a boy in Memphis, Tenn., by watching the wrestling TV program “USWA” at 10 a.m. every Saturday. “It was a big deal back then,” Fertig said.

Former WWE wrestler Kevin Fertig incorporates his wrestling past in his current career as a realtor. He had a special championship belt made for his customers to wear once they close a deal. (Photo by Jonathan Matthes)

“So many people would come through there, The Rock, (Hulk) Hogan, Ric Flair, Jerry Lawler. Everybody has been through Memphis.” Wrestling was not allowed in his home by his minister father, but Fertig would find ways to sneak peeks as much as he could. Eventually, Fertig, who played football and threw the shot put in high school, worked out in the same gym as professional wrestler Sid Vicious, who invited Fertig to become a workout partner. “I kept telling myself if I kept working out and progressing in this then there is no sense to stop now,” Fertig said. He signed with the WWE in 2002. Loving to be hated During his wrestling days, Fertig knew that fans didn’t watch to discover the outcome of the event but for the entertainment value. And he knew he played a key role in that experience. Most of the time, Fertig played the heel, whose job is to make the possible defeat of the babyface — the protagonist — seem real. “My job was to antagonize the crowd, get the crowd to hate me and then make sure the babyface was the (star),” Fertig said. Fertig would outclass the babyface, or face, have him beaten, then, miraculously, the face would rally to victory. Fertig would lay catatonically on the mat and the referee would dramatically count him out. The crowd would roar. The face would bask in the glow of victory, and Fertig would smile. “I’d be laying there on the mat, and even

though I didn’t win, to hear how crazed the crowd got for the match was just as exciting to me as it was getting praise,” he said. “I knew I was a part of their excitement.” Smiling was not uncommon for Fertig’s foes. Behind the bloviations and threats, most of the men on the tour were friendly with each other and enjoyed the theatrics of the occasion. On one occassion, Fertig, as Kevin Thorn, was wrestling Kane. When Kane — whose real name is Glenn Jacobs and is the Mayor of Knox County in Tennessee — threw a punch that was too real, striking Fertig at full force and knocking him to the mat. Fertig looked up in surprise at Kane, who was giggling. Microphones were too far away to pick it up and no one in attendance could tell he was laughing because Kane wore a mask. Fertig, however, could hear him and couldn’t help but crack a smile, too. The smiles and the enjoyment are all aspects that Fertig sees as a connection from his past in professional wrestling to his full-time job in real estate. “I have this (motto,) ‘The Champ is home.’ It’s not about me becoming the champ, it’s about the buyer becoming the champion,” Fertig said. “I’m doing my part to make sure that (the buyer) is the main event in your own home. I’m going to work my tail off so that on closing day it’s all about the buyer getting their home. And at the end of the day, they are leaving with the biggest smile on their face.”

LOOKING FOR A SIGN TO BUILD?

Sam Bachman, center front, surrounded by family, friends and teammates when his name was announced during the Major League baseball draft. (Photo courtesy of Miami University Athletics)

Fishers resident drafted ninth overall in MLB Draft By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com On July 11, Sam Bachman, a Fishers resident and former Hamilton Southeastern High School baseball standout, SPORTS became an Angel. A pitcher who recently completed his junior season at Miami (Ohio) University, Bachman was selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Los Angeles Angels. The 2018 HSE graduate was the ninth-overall selection in the draft. Bachman, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound righthander, watched the draft on a projector screen on campus with family and friends. As the draft unfolded, he went into a conference room and eavesdropped on a phone call between his Houston-based advisory team and the Angels’ front office as the two sides negotiated to make sure monetary compensation lined up with Bachman’s draft slot. Bachman then left the conference room in time to hear his name announced as the ninth-overall pick by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. The moment was emotional for Bachman, the first player in Miami history selected that high in the MLB Draft. “I didn’t think I was going to tear up. I didn’t ever tear up, I cried,” Bachman said. “It was awesome to share that (moment)

with my parents next to me and with everyone behind me. There were a lot of mentors, teammates, coaches, friends, family, people that have really made sacrifices to help me along the way.” At the end of the 2020 college baseball season, Bachman said he was not a projected first-round player. He was told by his coach, Dan Hayden, to expect to go somewhere between the seventh and 10th round. But Bachman, who is coming off a stellar junior season, had higher expectations for himself. “I knew the plan I had to execute, and I knew what it would take, and that’s a whole lot of sacrifice and doing things the right way, and 100 percent buy-in,” Bachman said. Coming off a career-best season, Bachman ranked in the top 10 in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (4.37), earned run average (1.81) and hits allowed per nine innings (3.93). He led the Mid-American Conference in nine categories and earned firstteam all-conference honors. His fastball exceeds 100 mph and has hit 91 mph with his slider. “I don’t want to short-change how talented Sam is, but his separator is his discipline and his work ethic,” Hayden said. “That’s why he’s at where he’s at. Sam didn’t take the easy path to get here. He went through adversity over and over again to (be drafted so high).”

Humane Society brings back annual fundraiser By Haley Miller news@geistcurrent.com Wine, Wags & Whiskers, an annual fundraiser put on by the Humane Society for Hamilton County, will be July 31 at PETS Embassy Suites in Noblesville. The evening of wine tasting benefits the organization’s daily operations and the Survivor Program, a lifesaving medical care fund, according to a press release from the Humane Society. The fundraiser is from 6 to 9 p.m. and includes a raffle, silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and drink-tasting options. “There’s going to be something for everyone,” said Megan Davis, HSHC senior communications manager. The fundraiser spotlights many individual animals at the shelter. Dog and cat lovers will have the opportunity to interact with some of the adoptable animals, and bottles of donated wine will have labels with adoptable animals and their backstories.

Attendees can mingle with adoptable pets at the annual July 31 Wine, Wags & Whiskers event. (Submitted photo)

Last year, the Humane Society canceled the fundraiser because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so the staff is eager to host it again, Davis said. “Everyone in the office is very excited for it,” Davis said. Davis said the event typically sells out. Single tickets are $85 and sponsorship opportunities are available. All net proceeds directly support the animals. Indiana provides big boost for law enforcement Commentary by State Rep. Todd Huston The vast majority of us don’t worry whether we’ll make it home for dinner, let alone whether we’ll make it home at STATEHOUSE all. That’s not the case for thousands of Indiana’s law enforcement officers who work hard to protect all Hoosiers. This year, legislators stepped up in a big way to recognize the sacrifices of the men and women in uniform by making strong investments in law enforcement training programs and facilities and providing better hiring and crime-fighting tools. This session, Republican efforts resulted in $70 million being directed to modernize law enforcement training facilities and programs. The Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield is an expansive campus preparing law enforcement professionals for service through rigorous training. While ILEA offers many state-of-the-art training programs, some areas have not been updated since the 1970s. Our investment will help ILEA make much-needed improvements and enhance their top-notch training programs. We’re also providing salary increases for state police, conservation and excise officers and funding to construct a new Indiana State Police

post and laboratory. Thanks to the next two-year state budget, local departments can now apply for one-time grants to purchase body-worn cameras. While many departments are already using this technology to increase transparency and accountability, the state is offering matching grants to help departments that may not have the resources to equip all of their officers. House Enrolled Act 1006, authored by State Rep. Greg Steuerwald, is one of the greatest achievements of the legislative session. Referred to by many as “historic” and a “national model,” this robust legislation gives police more tools to vet candidates and hire the best officers. The law requires full-employment record sharing between police departments so they can identify bad actors. I strongly believe that we honor the best by getting rid of the worst. This legislation received bipartisan support, total backing from law enforcement and support from the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus. House Enrolled Act 1558 targets crime in central Indiana by pulling together local resources. Counties will team up to get criminals off the streets with the creation of the Central Indiana Crime Guns Task Force. With the help of a $10 million investment over the next two years, the

DISPATCHES

group will share information, use data-driven methods to link crime guns to unsolved cases and apprehend suspects across county lines. To help solve more crimes across the state, Indiana will expand the use of Hi-Tech Crime Units so prosecutors and law enforcement can work with Indiana’s colleges to gather and process digital evidence in a variety of cases. Through the passage of House Enrolled Act 1082, university students could help find additional evidence or exonerate a person of interest. Overall, Republicans delivered big wins this session for our hardworking law enforcement officers and the communities they protect. Whether investing in training programs and facilities, or providing enhanced hiring and crime-fighting tools, these efforts serve all Hoosiers. We recognize the tremendous efforts of those who wear the badge, and Indiana’s Republican lawmakers stepped up to help provide them the resources they need to do their jobs and come home safe.

House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) represents House District 37, which includes portions of Hamilton County and Fishers.

Fishers intends to purchase portion of HSE Utilities By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com Fishers residents getting their utilities from Hamilton Southeastern Utilities could be receiving UTILITIES services from a new provider beginning Jan. 1, 2022: The City of Fishers. The two entities have come to terms on a $90 million sale of the Fishers portion of HSE Utilities to the City of Fishers, pending approval of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. HSE Utilities will still operate in portions of

Noblesville and in unincorporated areas in Delaware, Fall Creek and Wayne townships. “Through this acquisition, the city can make a strategic investment to provide its community with complete ownership over all sewer assets within Fishers,” Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness stated in a press release. “Due to strategic investments in our municipal utility and the expertise of our staff, the City is well prepared to consolidate the utilities and provide consistent service and support for all Fishers residents. To be able to finance this purchase without a single penny of increased rates while maintain-

ing the level of service is a real win.” According to Fishers Director of Public Relations Ashley Elrod, the current customer rates, combined with money saved in efficiency, will pay for the acquisition. City officials say the acquisition will not affect customers service or rates. The deal is expected to be made official by December and would affect approximately 25,000 customers. Lifelong construction worker finds relief from severe leg pain through vein procedure Credits care team at Ascension St. Vincent for going ‘out of their way’ to answer his questions and concerns Bruce Brosius began noticing varicose veins in his legs about 10 years ago. But he said it wasn’t until recently that they started to cause him severe pain. His wife encouraged him to seek care. Bruce said an ultrasound at Ascension St. Vincent detected clotting in both of his legs. “The clotting was causing me a great deal of pain and swelling,” said Bruce. “The clot was probably the size of a nickel in the side of my right leg, near my knee. It was hard to the touch and very tender.” Bruce said he believes several factors may have led to the varicose veins in his legs, including being a reformed smoker, his genetics and his demanding construction job. “I spend a lot of hours standing on my feet, wearing boots and carrying a tool belt,” Bruce said. “I’m doing high-impact work all day long.” Bruce had a radiofrequency vein ablation procedure on his right leg at Ascension St. Vincent. This minimally invasive procedure uses heat created from radiofrequency waves, delivered through a small catheter, to close off the abnormal superficial veins that cause varicose veins. © Ascension 2021. “Vein problems run a broad spectrum, from unsightly cosmetic issues to significant health issues and disability,” said Richard Chitwood, MD, a vascular surgeon at Ascension St. Vincent. “Our team of vascular surgeons listens to each patient to determine the care plan for their particular issues and provide appropriate treatment.” “If I would have known that this treatment was going to be so painless, and that I was going to meet so many wonderful people involved, I would have done this a long time ago.” — Bruce Brosius Bruce said the procedure was quick and simple, and relieved a large amount of pressure from his leg. He speaks highly of the care he received. “The team at Ascension St. Vincent has gone out of their way to be respectful of my wishes and to listen to all my questions and concerns,” said Bruce. “I cannot say enough good things about them.”

Bruce Brosius, who has been a construction worker for over 40 years, had a minimally invasive procedure to relieve his leg pain.

Bruce said he will continue to see his care teams at Ascension St. Vincent for follow-up care and that he is looking forward to working and riding his bike without leg pain getting in the way. “If I would have known that this treatment was going to be so painless, and that I was going to meet so many wonderful people involved, I would have done this a long time ago,” said Bruce. Vascular specialists at Ascension St. Vincent provide a variety of innovative treatment options for men and women needing vascular care, from injection sclerotherapy for spider veins to minimally invasive venous ablation for varicose veins. Ivy Tech launches Ivy+ Commentary by Sue Ellspermann Next to home ownership, the cost of college is one of the biggest investments for Americans. People are EDUCATION either trying to pay for college for their children or they are trying to attend college themselves. It is the crux of why many are questioning the value of a college degree. When calculating the cost of tuition and fees, plus textbooks, along with living expenses, college can be expensive. There are many ways families can reduce the out-of-pocket costs of college. Filing the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, to determine if a student qualifies for federal or state financial aid is one way. Applying for scholarships is another. Students could even consider living at home with a parent or guardian. However, even if students qualify for financial aid, other needs such as food, transportation and housing may take precedence, and research shows that more than 65 percent of college students forego purchasing course materials, including textbooks, in order to save money. To help combat this financial obstacle and ensure Hoosiers can afford a post-secondary education, Ivy Tech Community College has maintained its low-cost tuition model. This year, with the funding support of the Indiana General Assembly, we are pleased to announce that Ivy Tech will freeze tuition for the next two years. This means the cost of tuition will remain with no unexpected increases for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years. Not only that, but beginning this fall semester, Ivy Tech will pay for student textbooks for at least the next academic year, investing nearly $25 million to cover

the costs of required textbooks. This investment will save students hundreds of dollars each year and, most importantly, ensure they have the materials they need to succeed on Day 1. We did not stop there. We also know that full-time students, which describes about 25 percent of our student body, need to complete 30 credit hours per year to be considered “on-time completion” for a two-year degree. Ivy Tech will ensure no full-time student will pay more than $4,500 per year for as many credit hours as they want to take. If a full-time student does not complete 15 credit hours in a semester, Ivy Tech will allow them to take up to six credit hours at no charge with a Summer-Flex Scholarship to reach the 30 credit hours needed. This will help students maintain state financial aid eligibility and qualify for more aid dollars. You may think this sounds too good to be true. We can assure you – it is true! With our new Ivy+ approach to tuition and books, these student-centered initiatives reinforce that Ivy Tech is committed to being your community college, plus remove barriers to student success and completion. Our goal is to ensure Hoosiers succeed in earning a post-secondary credential that either puts them directly into a high-wage, high-demand career, or sets them up for a seamless transfer to a four-year institution where they can complete their bachelor’s degree and beyond. With Ivy+ we are investing in a brighter, more affordable, future for Hoosiers. Sue Ellspermann is the president of Ivy Tech Community College. She previously served as Indiana’s 50th lieutenant governor from 2012 to 2016 under former Gov. Mike Pence.

Family’s desire for country life sows seeds for Wild Blackberry Farms moved to the farm. The only problem was, there was no house on the property. “So, we moved into the barn for 13 months,” Butts said. “While we built the house,” Rhodes said. “It was OK for six months.” “We had a kids bounce house and trampoline. We had a living room set up in here. The kids loved it. Well, I loved it too,” said Butts, who served as the general contractor for the building of the house that was completed in 2018. “It was an adventure.” For more, visit wildblackberryfarms.com.

By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com In 2012, when spouses Greg Butts and Jennifer Rhodes bought the property at 10728 S. 700 W. in Fortville that would one day become Wild Blackberry Farms, it contained little more than a corn and soybean field. But the couple had a desire for their kids to get a dose of country life, so they turned the land into something the whole family could enjoy. They have four children: Sam, 16, Nora, 15, Jesse, 11, and Olivia, 9. “We knew we wanted a rural property. We knew we wanted acreage for our kids to run around on outside and not be inside on devices all the time. That’s what led us here,” Rhodes said. “We found the property, fell in love with it and it felt right, and we went with our gut.” Nine years later, a house they built on the property is their full-time home, and the barn and surrounding area will host 30 weddings this year. The multiple rows of blackberry bushes, first planted in 2015, are in their first full season of u-pick, meaning the plants are producing enough berries that the public can visit between 7 and 11 a.m., Monday through Saturday, until at least the end of August to pick their own fruit at $5 per pound. Thousands of blackberry bushes were planted under the August sun in 2015. It wasn’t until 2017 that a decent number of berries popped up on the canes. With the exception of a couple u-picks last year, from 2017 to 2020 all the blackberries were for commercial use. For help picking the thousands of berries, the couple turned to an eclectic group of rotating employees. “We’d hire a variety of people. We’ve had prison labor,” Rhodes said. “We’ve had Venezuelan asylum seekers. Most of them were physicians and engineers normally, but they couldn’t do that here. Another year we had high schoolers on break picking for us.” Because of how Butts and his only, fulltime staff member, Ruben Gonzalez, tend the blackberry plants, the berries are simple to pick. “It’s really easy picking,” Rhodes said. “They are thornless, unlike the ones you’d

pick in the wild.” To make the berries easily accessible and produce a better yield, the blackberry canes (the cane is the stalk the blackberry branches shoot off from) are attached to a trellis that can be straightened out or collapsed, depending on the need. When straightened, the leaves of the canes face the sun, while the blackberries are shaded, protecting them from scalding. The process is labor-intensive. It takes a

full day to raise all of the trellises, another day to mow and tend to the property and a third day to readjust the trellises. Butts works the farm full-time. “It’s three full-time jobs,” Butts said. Butts spent 15 years in financial advising before switching to farm work. He sometimes works 19-hour days. Rhodes, his wife, is a partner at Ice Miller law firm. “After my career and kids, I always say we kind of lost our minds and moved to a farm,” Butts said. “We used to live out on Geist Reservoir, but we decided to find some acreage and raise our kids in the country.” Butts and Rhodes grew up with room to roam. Butts is from Galveston in Cass County, and Rhodes is from Peru, Ind. For nearly two decades, the couple looked for the right piece of land that wasn’t too expensive to purchase and build on. Then they found the field in Fortville that would one day become Wild Blackberry Farms. Nothing was on it. So, they first built the barn. Butts enjoyed playing barn basketball as a kid, so there is room in the loft for basketball and other sports. Initially, the property served as a place to play, as the family continued to live in Geist. The couple got a horse and four-wheelers and would visit, but eventually desired to live there permanently. So, they sold their home and

NAVIGATING THE BLACKBERRY INDUSTRY The vast majority of blackberries consumed by Americans are grown internationally. “Ninety-five percent are imported from South and Central America,” said Greg Butts, Wild Blackberry Farms co-owner. A major portion of American blackberries are grown in the Carolinas, Georgia and California. For Butts, the lack of blackberry producers in the Midwest signaled an opportunity. “(This time of year) the markets in Central and South America are now finished selling, so my bigger buyers are coming to us now saying, ‘Hey, our southern markets are dried up now and are done with berries,’” Butts said. “So, it’s a supply-and-demand thing. They still want berries but there are no berries coming out of Mexico now, but we are just getting started. Even Georgia and South Carolina are wrapping up with their seasons.”

Waiting game

Sympathy for a misanthrope

Commentary by Terry Anker “We’d love to offer you a complimentary coffee,” they say. “Sure, two creams and a sugar,” we reply. Returning empty-handed, they report, “The machine is broken, again.” It is not an earth-shattering disappointment. Still, their promises urge that we choose them over other dealers because of their great customer service – and free warm beverages! Then the promised parts did not arrive or were never ordered. It seems that there is a parts shortage. Then there was a delay in completing the work. It seems that there is a labor shortage. Then there was difficulty in using the “handy” online process to approve the invoice and pay the bill. It seems that there is an internet efficiency shortage. After 15 minutes or so of wrangling with a computer and agreeing to all manner of information-probing for reasons that don’t conform with the simple repair work being done, the online transaction is complete. But an unspecified error resets the forms, demanding them to be completed again. This time, the process goes a bit faster because the answers to the odd questions remain in the human mind longer than they do in the computer’s short-term memory. This time, another error. Contemporaneously, the bank is texting to let us know that the charge has been approved, now twice, even as the service provider’s website is telling us that we need to pay again! So, now we call. The automated attendant tells us that they are “experiencing longer than usual wait times.” No answer here. So, we go stand in line, in person, and pay as they dictate. The surly employee behind the counter snorts, “This happens all the time.” So much for customer service. What’s our right to expect from their promise? How patient should we be with grand promise and petite performance?

Sometimes, I really don’t like people. And by people, I mean strangers, family, my children, my husband Doo … pretty much everyone. I hate the way they drive, their stupid conversations, the constant “I need you.” I’m blaming this occasional loathing on hormones and the subsequent lack of restorative sleep, but also on the end of COVID-19 mitigation measures. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m beginning to miss quarantine! Let’s explore. Faithful readers know I am an introvert. Last year’s shutdown and social distancing rules were gifts that kept on giving for me. No large gatherings, no awkward small talk, no one on the roads. It was magical. Now, of course we are basically back to normal. Traffic, long lines, graduations and weddings — humans are emerging from their houses in droves, hell bent, it seems, on aggravating and annoying yours truly. I was purposely cut off twice in zipper merges the other day because I didn’t “get over” 3 miles ahead of the lane closure. I can’t get a moment’s worth of quiet with nieces and nephews literally running around like proverbial decapitated chickens. I’m ready to evict all four of my precious young-adult angels because, well, they are at home. Living. In close proximity to me. And though we just returned from an amazing anniversary vacay to Washington, I wouldn’t balk if Doo told me he had an overnight business trip. Mama wants her space! See what I mean? People in general are driving me nuts. And though I realize the problem is certainly temporary, I can honestly say that I really don’t like anyone right now. Peace out.

Original Broadway cast member returns to roots by directing ‘Saturday Night Fever’ By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com This is a blast from the past for Anne Beck. Beck was cast in the MUSICAL original company of “Saturday Night Fever,” a production close to her heart. “I started as a swing and then played Stephanie Mangano on Broadway, and then on (the) first national tour,” she said. Her husband, Scott, also was part of the original company. “We started dating toward the end of the tour after 3 1/2 years with ’Fever,’” Beck said. “We were on Broadway with it for two years, and the national tour for 18 months.” The Fishers resident is now directing and doing the choreography for Civic Theatre’s Youth Artists Program’s production of “Saturday Night Fever” July 29 to Aug. 1 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “It’s definitely cool to be part of an original show and now to share it with this amazing cast of high school artists,” said Beck, who is Civic’s YAP coordinator. “They are learning original choreography (of Arlene Philips) and learning 1970s styles, history, icons, etc.” Beck and her husband are performing as Tony Manero’s parents, Flo and Frank Manero. Daimon Anderson is playing the character John Travolta played in the movie. “It’s a completely new style and skill set for me — the dancing, the accent, the singing,” said Anderson, who will be a senior at Mt. Vernon High School this fall. “All of it is new to me, and I love it. Tony is such a contrasting character. He is confident and strong. But most of all, he is hurt. I think that kind of character is amazing to play.” Anderson said “Boogie Shoes” is definitely his favorite song and dance in the show. “It just has so much energy,” he said. “It is so much fun to do. Working with her as our director is an amazing experience. said. “My other favorite song to perform is my solo, ‘If I Can’t Have You,’ because I love pouring my heart into this beautiful ballad. I have not seen any other productions of the musical, but I have seen the movie. “Although the soundtrack of the movie is amazing, the script is absolutely awful. It is outdated and is very offensive and inappropriate, which makes me like the stage version that much more.” Chrzanowski said having an original Broadway company member direct and choreograph the show has been a privilege. “It is such an amazing feeling knowing that I am doing the same choreography as the original Broadway cast did,” she said. There are 7 p.m. performances July 29-31 and a 2 p.m. show Aug. 1. For more, visit civictheatre.org.

Burgerhaus The Cozumel Burger features pineapple and guacamole. (Photo by Anna Skinner)

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 89 Veterans Way, Carmel
What to get: The Cozumel burger Price: $13
Anna’s take: To be honest, I was pretty underwhelmed with Burgerhaus. I may be going into this with a bias because I’m not much of a burger gal to begin with, but I had been wanting to try the restaurant since it moved into the building next to my office in downtown Carmel. The chef was very kind, and the restaurant does have quite a variety of burger options – of which I tried the Cozumel, featuring grilled pine-

apple and guacamole. The burger makes for a beautiful presentation and picture, but I thought the guacamole was layered on too thick, making it difficult to eat and easy to fall apart. If you like a messy burger, or if you’re one of those “pineapple-belongs-on-pizza” people, this might be the burger for you. I really wanted to like Burgerhaus, but the poorly lit interior and the messy food are reasons I likely won’t return. If you’ve had a different experience, I would love to hear from you. ATI opens season Sept. 10 By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The Actors Theatre of Indiana will return to its past by opening its 2021-22 season with “Always…Patsy PRODUCTIONS Cline.” Judy Fitzgerald will reprise the role of legendary singer Patsy Cline, and Cynthia Collins plays Louise Segar, a devoted fan. It’s a two-person play with a seven-piece band. “The whole play is based off Louise’s letters from Patsy,” said Collins, an ATI co-founder along with Fitzgerald and Don Farrell. “We did it in 2013. It was supposed to be back last year but then everything was canceled. So, we’re trying to stick with the season we were going to do.” The schedule of four plays was announced July 13 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The first three shows were the same ATI planned for the 2020-21 season before it was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Always…Patsy Cline” is set for Sept. 10 to Oct. 3 at the Studio Theater. “Crazy,” “Sweet

Dreams” and “Walking After Midnight” are just a few of the 27 featured songs in the play. Cline died at age 30 in a 1963 plane crash. The cast on the other three plays, all new productions for ATI, have not yet been determined. The second show is “Lombardi” from Oct. 29 to Nov. 21. The play follows former Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi through a week in the 1965 NFL season as he attempts to lead the team to the championship. The 2022 portion of the schedule begins with “The Big Bang,” from Jan. 28 to Feb. 20. “‘The Big Bang’ is crazy. It’s just two men and a piano on stage,” Collins said. “It’s a wild ride. They’re doing a backers’ audition for a new musical on the history of the world. They act out the whole thing. Everything on the stage is used as a prop. Even though it’s a small show with the cast, it’s a big undertaking.” “Working: The Musical” is set for April 27 to May 22. The play is based on Studs Terkel’s best-selling book of interviews with American workers. For more, visit atistage.org.

Sites in New Harmony, Indiana. (Photos by Don Knebel)

History of Indiana’s ‘utopias’ Commentary by Don Knebel New Harmony, Ind., is famous for two 19th-century idealists who established communities there and for IndiTRAVEL ana’s first beer. In 1803, George Rapp and some followers left Germany to escape regious persecution. Expecting Jesus’ imminent return, these Harmonists established Harmony, Penn., holding property communally and advocating piety, industriousness, celibacy and pacifism. In 1814, after selling Harmony, they acquired 20,000 acres along the east bank of the Wabash River 29 miles from Evansville. In 10 years, about 800 Harmonists cleared 2,000 acres and erected 180 buildings in New Harmony, including log and frame family houses; community houses for unmarried adults; mills; factories; two churches, one in the shape of a cross; a granary; and a brewery. They established an orchard near the river and a hedge labyrinth south of town. In 1825, the Harmonists sold New Harmony for $200,000 (about $4.5 million today) to Robert Owen, a wealthy Welsh industrialist, and returned to Pennsylvania. Although Owen’s plan for a secular utopia failed, his ideas and the people he attracted

had a lasting impact on New Harmony and the nation (more next week). In 1965, the New Harmony Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark. The district includes about 25 buildings from the Harmonist era, including several frame houses and one community house in its original configuration. Another surviving Harmonist community house was converted to an opera house and is now an entertainment venue, as is the granary. The district includes the Harmonist Labryrinth, reconstructed near its original site in 1938. A reconstructed 1822 “Door of Promise,” originally leading to Harmonist churches, now leads to Church Park, featuring a fountain by Don Gummer, a renowned sculptor reared in Indiana. Reflecting the continuing progressive ideals of New Harmony, its visitor’s center is in the award-winning four-story Atheneum, designed by famed architect Richard Meier early in his career.
