By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township recently released its annual report covering the 2022-23 SCHOOLS school year and highlighting its 95-percent graduation rate, among other accomplishments.

The report stated that enrollment for the school year ending in spring of 2023 was 16,414. The district boasts four accredited early learning centers and six curricular themes for elementary students: STEM, Spanish immersion, communications, environmental studies, inquiry/performing arts and international studies.

The district also reported that it has been recognized by the NAMM Foundation for 12 consecutive years for excellence in music education.

The report stated that MSDLT offers 24 varsity sports opportunities and has accumulated 47 state and five national championships. Among the Class of 2023, 28 student athletes committed to continuing their athletic careers at colleges and universities, according to the report.

The district’s high school marching band, the Marching Pride of Lawrence Township, combines student musicians from Lawrence North and Lawrence Central high schools.

The report stated that the band was recognized in the October 2022 issue of Marching Bands in the USA.

“MPLT is a small community with common goals. LC and LN students learn with and from other students with whom they may not otherwise interact,” the report stated.

“And yet, those different perspectives come together to perform precise choreography and harmonious music. The benefits of the MPLT ecosystem carry over into academics with MPLT students applying the same focus and skills in classroom achievements.”

The report provided an update on various renovation projects throughout the district, noting that a significant portion of its ongoing facilities improvement project was completed by the end of the 2022-23 school year.

“In the last nine years, over $400 million has been invested in renovations and expansions that addressed capacity, safety

and security, enhanced learning environments, IT infrastructure and mechanicals for every facility,” the report stated. “The multiyear $220M simultaneous transformation at both Lawrence Central and Lawrence North, funded by the capital referendum, is in the third year of construction. Many of the major improvements, including the three-story academic wings, are complete.”

Renovations to both high schools are expected to be done this fall.

The annual report included goals set by the MSDLT Board of Education. They are: Equity and anti-racism, student achievement, establishing a strategic plan, valuing people in the district, safety and security for all school facilities, and maintaining fiscal responsibility.

news@geistcurrent.com The annual AARP Tax-Aide program in the City of Lawrence is set to begin Feb. 9 at the Fort Ben Branch of the SERVICES Indianapolis Public Library, 9330 E. 56th St. For the past 10 years, the tax preparation service was offered at the Lawrence Community Park community center, according to an announcement from the city.

“This change in location aims to continue providing accessible and efficient tax preparation services for senior citizens while utilizing a space that is convenient,” the announcement stated.

The AARP Tax-Aide program started in 1968, according to the AARP Foundation website.

The program “has provided free tax help to over 78 million taxpayers, with a focus on older adults with low to moderate income,” the website stated. “Tax-Aide volunteers are located nationwide, and are trained and IRS-certified every year to make sure

they know about and understand the latest changes and additions to the tax code.”

Police offers Citizens Academy news@geistcurrent.com The Lawrence Police Department is accepting applications for its Citizen Academy through Feb. 15.

OPPORTUNITY The program begins March 7 and lasts through May 16.

According to an announcement from the City of Lawrence, the Citizen Academy aims to develop community awareness through education, providing a deeper understanding of the Lawrence Police Department and the role law enforcement plays in the community.

“The Lawrence Police Department Citizen Academy will promote the concept of ‘Together Everyone Achieves More,’” the announcement stated. “This will create better teamwork and cooperation between the Lawrence Police Department and the citizens we serve.”

The 11-week program consists of weekly three-hour classes that include lectures, hands-on learning and role-playing scenarios, according to the application form.

Participants will be required to complete a ride-along with a patrol officer.

Fishers senior basketball player improves with age

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Fishers High School basketball coach Garrett Winegar is convinced the best is yet to come for senior Keenan Garner.

“He is just scratching the surface,” Winegar said.

Garner, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward, doesn’t turn 18 until April.

“Also, with living on a U.S. Army base in Germany for seven years prior to returning to the States last year, Keenan has not played as much basketball as many of the kids in the States have,” Winegar said.

“On top of all that, he works his butt off, is a terrific kid and leader and is going to do what it takes to continue to grow.”

Garner, who moved to Fishers in September 2022, was averaging more than 16 points and eight rebounds as of Jan. 18. The Tigers were 14-0 at the time.

“Keenan has improved the most with his ball handling, passing and finishing and his overall game IQ and feel for the game,” Winegar said. “He has really developed into a true wing/guard who has the ability to also play in the post. Keenan has worked

Garner said everyone has to play a bigger role after Jalen Haralson transferred to La Lumiere, a prep school in LaPorte. Haralson averaged 23.4 points as a sophomore last season.

offseason and really just believing we can win any game we go into,” Garner said. “We have really good team chemistry. We do things on and off the court. Once you have that relationship off the court, it translates to on the court. We’re unselfish and we trust each other in the big moments.”

Garner said his biggest leap from last season has been as a leader.

“I’m teaching everybody everything I can to have a really good senior season,” Garner said. “I’m focusing on all parts of my game, not just scoring but rebounding and assisting. I’m trying to be a more versatile player.

I’m trying to do a lot of everything, not just one thing.”

Garner, who was averaging 63 percent shooting from the field, averaged 7.9 points on 55 percent shooting last season.

“We have a lot of good shooters,” he said.

“I feel like everyone on our team can step up and hit a shot, and that opens up driving lanes.”

In Germany, Garner said his high school played against other schools from military bases. Garner began playing basketball when he was about 11 years old. He was trained and coached by Mario Coursey for approximately five years.

“He helped me fall in love with the game and it grew from there,” he said.

Garner has NCAA Division I offers from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois, in addition to some NAIA offers.

Retired Lawrence utilities superintendent rose through the ranks over 37-year career

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Scott Salsbery’s 37-year career with the City of Lawrence Utilities started because he needed a job, and his parents knew a guy.

“My parents lived next door to the guy who was superintendent of the utilities at that time, Bob Davis, and they were looking for help,” Salsbery said. “They had just started a water main replacement project over in Brookhaven, and I was between jobs at the time.”

So, in 1986, Salsbery started as what he called a “ditch man” — the guy in the hole, making repairs and installing new equipment. Fast-forward to the close of 2023, and he has just retired as the utilities superintendent.

A lot happened in between, though. In an interview at Porter Books in downtown Lawrence, Salsbery recalled that he was part of the work crews through 1993, when he transferred to the newly created city engineer’s office as an assistant. Through that job, he learned about easements, rights of way, surveying, design work and more.

After then-mayor Tom Schneider’s 1999 deal to sell Lawrence’s water utility to the Indianapolis Water Co. fell through, Salsbery said Lawrence Utilities LLC was formed to manage the utility for the city.

“That is when, in the latter part of 2001, I came on board at the LLC as an assistant director of operations,” he said. “Mainly dealing with stuff out in the field — running the crews and whatnot.”

The next mayor, though, made some changes. Salsbery recalled that Mayor Deborah Cantwell campaigned on “taking the utilities back,” because along with the LLC came controversial large rate increases for residents.

“It was almost like a 100-percent rate increase,” he said. “I mean, huge, because they hadn’t adjusted water rates since, like, 1988.”

A lawsuit followed to break the LLC contract, and eventually the utility went back to city management after about seven years under the LLC. But before the lawsuit was resolved, the director of operations — Salbery’s boss at the time — quit his job, leaving Salsbery in charge of that department.

but Salsbery remained. When Steve Collier started his first term as mayor, he appointed Salsbery to the top job with the city’s utilities, where Salsbery remained for his final eight years. That’s when he did some of the work he’s most proud of — rebuilding the city’s water infrastructure, which wasn’t an easy task since the utility was pretty much broke.

“When we took over, the water utility was virtually bankrupt,” he said. “By December of 2017, if we just chose to do nothing, the water utility would have defaulted on its bond.

So, it was a very dire situation. The sewer was in a little better shape, but not much.

And again, a lot of this is just due to our councilors in the past — nobody wanted to raise rates. It was politically unpopular.”

But, he said, the utility needed money to make major emergency repairs. For example, he said, in 2016, before he was appointed superintendent, he received a call that one of the water plants’ aerator units — used to treat raw water pumped up from the aquifer — had collapsed and fallen into the well.

The city’s finances in general weren’t that great, Salsbery said, and he credited then-Controller Jason Fenwick for helping

to turn all that around through planning, management and forward-thinking. Salsbery said the city’s administrators worked well as a team. They also came up with a plan for gradual rate increases to help pay for those needed repairs and improvements.

It wasn’t easy, he said, and it wasn’t unanimous. But they did get a rate increase passed and were able to improve the city’s bond rating to qualify for project funding.

They also secured an $8.5 million state loan, which started the ball rolling. That ball hasn’t stopped, and Salsbery said he hopes it keeps going.

“All of our key water assets right now are basically as good as new,” Salsbery said.

“The important thing now is just to stay on top of that and don’t let them deteriorate — like what happened before — by doing smaller but more frequent rate increases to make sure that you’re keeping up with your routine operation and maintenance.”

Salsbery said there are still challenges ahead for the city’s utilities.

“But I like to think that with the tremendous teamwork — everybody kind of doing their part — we definitely leave city utilities in way, way better shape than we found it.

That’s a source of great satisfaction for me, personally.”

A few days into retirement, Salsbery said he had been doing a lot of reading, catching up on home projects and relaxing. His big retirement plans will involve travel — domestic and international. He has family in France, he said, and he and his wife enjoy road trips.

Like the Robert Frost poem, he said they prefer the “road less traveled.”

“We don’t take main roads,” he said. “We try to stay on back roads because we’re firm believers in the fact you find more cool stuff out on the back roads.”

A FRENCH CONNECTION Retired City of Lawrence Utilities Superintendent Scott Salsbery, who served a term in the U.S. Air Force, comes from a military family and grew up moving around from base to base.

“I was actually born on Chanute Air Force Base over in Illinois, just across the state line in Rantoul, Illinois, kind of north of Champaign,” he said. His dad — originally from Kokomo — had his last duty assignment at the recruiting center in downtown Indianapolis. “He still owns the original family farm out there (in) Kokomo.”

Salsbery said his mother is French and his parents met when his father was stationed in Paris.

“My mom was living with her older sister in basically a suburb of Paris,” he said.

“I forget exactly how they met, but I think it was through some people that my dad worked with who lived next door to where my mom’s sister was — kind of a matchmaker type thing.”

The family lived in various places, ending up in Lawrence in 1977, and Salsbery’s been there ever since.

“How do bi-focal contact lenses work?”

That is the million-dollar question we get asked multiple times daily.

In one word, the answer is: magic! It’s actually some pretty complicated physics, but “magic” is a bit easier to comprehend unless you work for NASA or love nerdy optometric ray light diagrams, but I digress.

For the sake of simplicity, the multifocal contact lenses are designed like a bulls-eye target, with alternating zones of distance and near prescriptions. Each zone helps the patient to see clearly at different distances. Simple enough, right? We’re often asked, “But how can I ‘see’ far and up close at the same time?” Well, you can and you can’t.

Multifocal contacts work on the principle of simultaneous vision. Imagine placing a screen door in between you and another person. You can choose to focus on the screen door or the person standing on the other side. You can actually see both at the same time, but you can only focus clearly on one at a time.

The same holds true with the bifocal/ multifocal contact lenses. Your brain is getting simultaneous images from each different zone but needs to choose which one it wants to see clearly at that moment in time.

Again, this sounds a lot more difficult and complicated than in actual practice, which is why “magic” covers a lot of the explanation sans physics. The reality is that most patients adapt very quickly and easily to the above mentioned complex system.

Typically, it will take 48 to 72 hours for a patient to adjust to their new simultaneous vision contact lenses. And once they adapt, they will be able to enjoy clear vision at near, far and computer distances without needing reading glasses or having to suffer from the pitfalls of monovision.

Nutrition shop opens In Lawrence

By Edward Redd edward@youarecurrent.com A new coffee shop specializing in healthy meals has opened in Lawrence. According to the owners, it has RIBBON CUTTING a diverse menu of food and beverages.

On Jan 15, owners Erika Canul and Enrique Martinez celebrated the opening of 2E Lawrence Nutrition Place with a ribbon cutting at the store, 4721 N. Franklin Rd., in Lawrence.

Canul and Martinez said they wanted to start a business that would emphasize nutrition by incorporating Herbalife products into the menu.

According to the Herbalife website, its products support nutrition goals that include weight loss and muscle gain.

Martinez said 2E Lawerence Nutrition Place is committed to nourishing the community and promoting healthy lifestyles.

“My goal is to bring to the (people) around the neighborhood a quality life,” Martinez said. “Better life and more nutrition (are the goals).”

Floor coating business expands

By Edward Redd edward@youarecurrent.com In 2016, Noblesville resident Aaron Reed found a side hustle that would later become an entrepreneurial venture.

BUSINESS It was Garage Force, a national franchise specializing in floor coating installation.

Prior to 2016, Reed and his wife Patti collectively spent 30 years working in the corporate world. Aaron and Patti both worked at McDonald’s, and Patti later worked for Riverview Hospital. When Aaron discovered Garage Force of Indianapolis North, he started working for the company part time when he wasn’t working his first job.

Aaron said after a couple of years, he wanted to start his own business.

“I was getting tired of the corporate world,” Aaron said. “The opportunity came up to open up my own (Garage Force).”

In 2018, Aaron opened Garage Force of Indianapolis South. In 2021, Garage Force of Indianapolis North was sold to Aaron because the owner wanted to pursue other career opportunities. When the Reeds owned both locations, they decided to merge them into

one, Garage Force of Indianapolis. It provides services for Indianapolis and nearby areas like Fishers and Noblesville.

Patti said the business was so successful that she was able to leave her old job to join Aaron in operating the business in 2021.

Garage Force uses polyurea coating with flooring installation. The coating is highly durable and is often used to coat and seal garage floors and, according to the Reeds, lasts longer than traditional coating, making it ideal for regularly used surfaces like garage floors and places with concrete.

ATI actors get their kicks on ‘Route 66’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Craig Underwood had so much fun with Actors Theatre of Indiana’s presentation of “Route 66” in 2012, he was MUSICAL eager to travel down that road again.

The 2000 Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate, who is based in New York City, returns to play the same character he did in 2012 in the musical about traveling the famous route in ATI’s production set for Feb. 2-18 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“I’m excited to do it again,” Underwood said. “I had such a great time last time.

I’m a little nervous because I am 12 years older, but I think it’ll be really fun.”

Underwood contacted ATI when he learned it was presenting the show again.

“Because it’s four people that have to sing together, it’s very specific,” he said.

“I totally understand if I’m not the right fit this time, but I’d jump at the chance to do it. I love working for ATI.” The four men play different roles in vignettes, but all go by their real first names in each vignette. The music follows the area of the U.S. and the time from the 1950s to the mid-1960s.

“I love when it gets to the Beach Boystype music,” Underwood said. “I think it amps it up and all the fun harmonies, and by that time we as performers are pretty tired because we’re like an hour and 20 minutes into the one-and-a-half-hour show. I think it gets us going again. It’s like a whole breath of fresh air. It just shows kind of how the music shifted from the ‘50s to the ‘60s.”

Cynthia Collins, an ATI co-founder and Carmel resident, is directing and choreographing the musical.

“From start to finish, it’s this high-energy journey on Route 66,” Collins said. “The show goes from Chicago to Los Angeles, and the music follows the journey. It starts out with bebop music from the ’50s.”

The musical concludes with songs such as “Dead Man’s Curve,” “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena” and “GTO.” There are audio commercials from the

Eric Olson, a Fishers resident, wasn’t familiar with the show but saw a video of the previous time ATI performed “Route 66.”

“It’s really fun to hear a mix of songs and you are like, ‘I’ve known that song my whole life,’” said Olson, who works for Indiana Repertory Theatre as institutional giving manager and is in his fourth production with ATI. “Songs like ‘King of the Road’ mixed in with songs you’ve never heard before, but (it’s) a great tune. It’s a lot of work in a little time. These shows have a way of being terrifying in the beginning, thinking, ‘There is no way I can ever do this,’ and then a few days in, it’s ‘Hey, I’m doing this and it feels great.’”

Each performer has a few solo songs.

Brandon Vos, a Camby resident, is the music director.

“It’s a fun show because I think a lot of the tunes are familiar to everybody,” Vos said. “It’s the boogie-boogie surfer rock and Beach Boys-type stuff. It’s just a lot of energy and a lot of fun for us and the

audience, too. There are participation moments a couple times.”

Vos said there are more than 30 songs, mostly between 2 and 4 minutes long.

“I’m in charge of specific parts of the music itself but they all bring their own personalities to it,” Vos said.

Vos has worked with Indianapolis resident Brett Mutter at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. Mutter previously acted in ATI’s “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” “I love tight harmonies and tight quartet singing,” Mutter said.

Cast member Kieran Danaan, a New York City resident, made his ATI debut in “Mr. Confidential” in May 2023.

“The four of us in this cast get to be so versatile,” Danaan said. “We get to explore different sides of ourselves. The four of us are witty, so it’s going to be a good time.”

Danaan said most of the music was new to him.

“The music is very relaxing but it’s also upbeat,” he said. “The music has a good message.”

Commentary by Mark LaFay There is something very remarkable about freezing weather and the way it makes us all state the obvious: COMFORT FOOD “Wow, it’s cold outside.” But, hey, it is cold outside, and it has me thinking about some really good comfort food. Crisp lettuce, tomato, bacon, a smear of mayo — it’s fresh, it’s filling, and it hits the spot without weighing you down.

Last but not least for all you seafood lovers, clam chowder is a must. It’s creamy, hearty and packed with clams. Pair it with a hot and delicious tuna melt. It’s simple, but, boy, does it complement that chowder well.
