OUR VIEWS
It is our position that the people of Hamilton County must continue to support organizations such as the Entrepreneurship Advancement Center (EAC). EAC’s sole goal is to promote local entrepreneurship and provide the resources to increase the success rate of neophyte entrepreneurs. The EAC offers a variety of programs for those looking to create their own business. First, there is the wildly popular student business competition, which has helped produce four student-run businesses since 2009. There is also the Community Business Plan Competition, which was created in 2010 and gives the winner consulting advice from local business leaders. Other programs include networking events as well as educational happenings. We believe institutions like the EAC are what make Hamilton County one of the most successful counties in the United States. The EAC’s ability to spark the entrepreneurial interest in high school students and provide resources and consultation from experienced business leaders for all is a major asset that everyone should take advantage of. For more information on the Entrepreneurship Advancement Center, go to http://goentrepreneurs.org.
Pooch perks
It is our position that dogs – man’s best friends – are deserving of a few perks in life, such as the opportunity to exercise and socialize in the safe confounds of a fenced-in dog park. Commonly referred to as “bark parks,” these parks provide ample space for dogs to run freely without a leash in the company of fellow canine companions. Some parks even provide ponds for swimming and retrieving. Pierson Bark Park in Fishers is one such park. There is also a dog park in Westfield, and the idea is being explored in Carmel. Safeguards such as requiring the pet’s vaccination records and adhering to a strict set of behavioral and clean-up rules help ensure a safe environment for play. Paid memberships also help offset the cost of operation. Bark parks are especially beneficial for dogs with little land to run or dogs that are just plain lonely. They also serve as great bonding grounds for pet owners. Most humans are happier and healthier when they exercise regularly and have a large social circle. The same holds true for dogs. They supply us with so much joy and unconditional love; isn’t it only right to return the favor?

AU announcement is Ditslear’s doing
Thank you! Center resumes news flow Where we criticize, we also look for opportunities to commend, and this is one such example. Today, we’d like to offer a sincere note of appreciation to the leadership of The Center for the Performing Arts for resuming the flow of news releases to Current. That type of cooperation tells us that the greater Hamilton County community is important to the center, and we believe that is as it should be. So again, thanks, folks. Elsewhere in this issue and online, you will find The Palladium’s summer schedule. There are some American musical institutions, Emmy Lou Harris to name one, which will make this a memorable summer at The Palladium, the center’s gem. What appears to be an aggressive pursuit of touring acts is to be applauded. As we always do, we urge you to call the Center’s box office at 843.3800 or visit tickets@thecenterfortheperformingarts. org. to pack the house. Turn on the lights and turn up the volume! ••• And so Gov. Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg against this, but since blood is thicker than water – or votes and unyielding scrutiny – we begrudgingly understand his answer. Still, we believed (and still do) that Our Man Mitch would have seriously ratcheted up the discourse along the way to Election Day. We believed (and still do) that Daniels would have had something of a forceful, changing effect on President Barack Obama – especially on the fiscal conservancy front. Look at how Daniels made Indiana financially whole again in less than two terms. We’re not suggesting he could accomplish that with our national finances, but he would have made a massive dent in the problem. We’re all poorer for his decision, but that’s life.

READERS’ VIEWS Limits are needed for all positions Editor, In response to Kevin Kane’s column last week on term limits, yes, I definitely think communities need “term limits” for all political positions! This is not only needed to ensure diversity in community thinking and action, but it is a must. If we, as a community or country allow positions to be held longer than two terms, it could cause people not to show up at the poles, ex-
press their concerns to and for a new candidate, and take the attitude that the person who holds the position already will be voted in again. This is already happening in some areas. By limiting the terms of office, we can attract more young people to the poles and give them a voice they don’t know they have or currently aren’t using. Bernadette Snyder 46062

We don’t need career politicians Editor, ABSOLUTELY, there should be term limits. We have far too many politicians serving too many terms. I do not believe that the framers of the Constitution intended for there to be career politicians. Their thinking was to remove the possibility of a person’s being able to rule as a king. With that in mind they imposed term limits on the executive branch. They did not
put in any provision for limiting the terms of legislators or judges. Since the legislative branch makes the laws it doesn’t seem likely that term limits will become a reality but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t. I believe it is time in America for term limits at every level of government. Ron Fleming 46062

Is divorce sometimes the best thing for your kids? COMMENTARY By Danielle Wilson Do you ever think about what would happen if you and your spouse divorced? It’s been on my mind lately, not because my husband and I are having problems, but because we’ve been hanging out recently with either friends who are divorced or those who may be heading in that direction. I think it’s only natural to wonder how you would handle serious marital issues if they arose and what decisions you would make. For example, Doo asked me the other day what I would do if he ever had an affair. I’d like to think I could forgive him and give our marriage a second chance, because everyone deserves another shot, right? But honestly, I just don’t know how I would feel about it. “What if I cheated on you on several different occasions? What then?” Easy. I’d kick him out on his buttooski. How can you ever trust someone after repeated indiscretions? And how can you have a marriage if there is no trust? Of course, we have children. Four of them, and they are all at the age that they would be acutely aware if Daddy moved out. So I asked Doo, “If I screwed up, but you were never able to forgive me, would you still want to stay together for the kids?” This opened a whole ‘nother can of worms. Because whose happiness should come first? Ours? Theirs? Is it better to tough it out and stay in a miserable relationship so that your kids have a sense of family and se-
curity, even if that sense is based on a lie? Or would it be healthier to part ways amicably and hope to find love again with someone else? After all, children are incredibly perceptive. I once knew an 8-year old who was so stressed out by her parents’ constant fighting that she began pulling out her eyelashes. (They eventually got themselves and her into therapy, and everyone is much better now.)
Because whose happiness should come first? Ours? Theirs? Is it better to tough it out and stay in a miserable relationship so that your kids have a sense of family and security, even if that sense is based on a lie? Even when you think you are being discreet when you argue, kids can always tell when something’s up. So would it even be possible to fool your children into thinking everything was OK? Maybe, but I can’t imagine what that would cost you emotionally. And eventually, they will find out. What then?
Have you seen the movie “Couples Retreat”? One of the couples is just waiting until their teenage daughter goes off to college so that they can divorce. They literally spent 10 years of their lives hating each other but pretending they didn’t so that their daughter would grow up with a positive view of marriage. I’m honestly not sure I could be that unselfish. After all, sometimes marriages aren’t meant to last, for whatever reason. You were married too young, you have a major shift in ideologies, etc. And I guess, sometimes, you just fall out of love. Even if two people commit to counseling and serious work on their marriage, I truly believe some people are better off apart. At least then your kids could have the chance of being in two loving environments rather than one cold or fake one. I don’t know. It’s so easy for me to sit here and hypothesize, because it’s not my marriage on the brink. And it’s even easier to judge other people. I hope to God I never have to make a decision like that for real. Come to think of it, I’d better go find Doo and tell him how much I love him and need him. And that I’ll kill him if he ever put me in that situation. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a Carmel resident and contributing columnist. You may e-mail her at danielle@ currentincarmel.com.

Could recycling reduce our garbage costs? program reverts back to the city to help offset the expenses, and he agreed that if it was posted from time to time to the Noblesville residents it may help with their decision to recycle more. Finchum also stated that while the return of monies helps with the recycle portion of the contract, the overall contract cost outweighs the possibilities of the funds being reduced enough to save a substantial amount, but it does help. Finchum went on to say, “If Noblesville showed that it could recycle to a level exceeding the general trash amounts, then the contract could be written to address this. The contract will be up next year and I will look at the verbiage to possibly address a tonnage comparison of trash and recycling. Anything is possible if enough people support the idea and put forth the effort to see it done. Thank you for your thoughts and positive support that Noblesville residents can make better things happen.” Thanks for your great question, Deb, and for your thoughtful response, Len. And again, rock on, recyclers.

COMMENTARY By Krista Bocko Several readers e-mailed me with comments and questions on the recycling story I wrote a couple of months back, and I wanted to address one in particular. I’d mentioned that 50 percent of the money made through the recycling program comes back to the city to offset cost increases in the contract with Republic and we should all participate as much as possible. Deb Webster wrote to me: “In your article on garbage collection/recycling in Noblesville you mentioned that our recycling actually provides a kick-back of sorts to the city’s bill by Republic. I have never read that anywhere but in your column! This information needs to be posted on our water bills, on a banner in town, the city’s website... Is it possible to get people recycling to the point that it would subsidize our garbage costs sufficiently to stop raising our bills? Dan and I produce more recycling by far than garbage. We always have a full to overflowing recycle bin and one bag of garbage in our big garbage bin. We’re just two people. I would think families would far out strip us in recycling if they were just more aware.” I put the question to Len Finchum, Noblesville’s Street Commissioner, who replied that yes, half of the monies made from our recycle

Riverview women’s retreat set for this fall By Eric Seaman Current in Noblesville Ladies, are you wanting to get away from your daily grind and into some sand-soaked sandals? Look no further. The Riverview Hospital Foundation is, for the eighth consecutive year, hosting its annual Women’s Retreat at the luxurious Secrets Wild Orchard Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. With your choice of trekking to the Caribbean paradise for from September 28th or 29th to October 2nd. All women are invited to indulge in spas, seminars, and speakers. The popular retreat is the brainchild of Riverview Foundation Executive Director Trish Oman. When asked what the women of this area will get out of this experience, Oman replied, “It’s a way for them to get away and relax and rejuvenate. It takes them out of their day-to-day schedule and gives them an opportunity to pamper, focus, and reflect upon themselves…” Typically, anywhere between 3545 women decide to participate in the trip but an imperative cap of 50 individuals has been set. Individuals range from all walks of life including their relationship, such as mother-daughter couples and aunt-niece, and age, diversifying
from as early as their late 20s to even their late 80s. Regarding the monetary contributions of this retreat Oman said “The proceeds benefit our Women’s Endowment fund, which in turn goes strictly to women’s services, programs, and equipment…over the years we’ve raised a gross of $20,000 to $30,000.” Guest speakers at the Women’s Retreat include two local women, writer Kathy McHugh of Brownsburg and family physician Dr. Amy Banter. McHugh, author of Passing on Hope, will speak of her book and its riveting stories of healing and empowering oneself. Accompanying McHugh is Banter, a physician with Riverview Hospital who will speak of prominent women’s issues including the power of food, optimization of female health, and the concepts of aging well. Prices for the retreat range, from roughly $1,700 per person to just short of $2,400, depending on each guest’s desired length of stay, room size and payment option. Final payment for the retreat has been established on the date of Saturday June, 25th. Call 536-5592 for details or to register. June 1 is the last day to participate.

Communication makes us feel alive COMMENTARY By Brenda Alexander There are two experiences that all of us have in common. We were all born and we will all die. The trouble is, we can’t remember our births and recounting our deaths seems implausible. These shared events are therefore inaccessible to us when relating with each other. They are the crux of our isolation. In fact, our birth is an act that separates us physically from our mothers and, according to many faiths, spiritually from God. Our lives can therefore be described as ongoing attempts to regain the closeness – the community – we felt once, but no longer have. We attempt to regain this intimacy physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Whether it’s a spouse, best friend, or Nature, we are ever

AU’s MBA program to be offered in Noblesville Current in Noblesville The Anderson University Falls School of Business announced last week it will offer the professional MBA program in Noblesville starting this fall. Classes will be offered at City Hall on Tuesday evenings. “We are thrilled to partner with Anderson University for this,” said Mayor John Ditslear in a release. “This program will be a tremendous asset for area residents who would like to earn their MBA but who aren’t able to spend a lot of time on the road driving to and from class.” Public Affairs Manager Cara Culp said this benefit could help the city in the recruitment of new businesses. “From an economic development standpoint, it will be another asset for the city to have a location where employees can pursue an MBA in the same city where they work,” she said. The Noblesville site will be the newest for the Anderson MBA program in which more than 300 MBA students are currently enrolled. Three informational sessions will be held at Noblesville City Hall for those interested in learning more about the Anderson MBA program in Noblesville. attempting to be understood by someone or something else. Perhaps this is why texting, blogs, and Facebook entries are so popular. We get the feeling of intimacy – of communicating with someone – without the work of actually coming into contact with another human being. In the past, I’ve been dismissive of this type of “communication.” I feel strongly that having another human being involved in a communication attempt is a strong indicator of its relevance. Communication without relevance is an oxymoron. Think about our earliest recorded efforts at communication. In the pitch-dark caves in France there are magnificent works of art painted painstakingly by someone who was essentially blinded. Some anthropologists believe that a young man would enter the cave after a ritual that lasted days. Isolated and without food, he would enter into the sacred cave and paint the idealized image of the creature he would soon hunt. It was an effort of communicating with the spirit of the animal whose life he would take in order to sustain his own - a visceral attempt at communing with nature. Contrast this with the story of a young man in Missouri, buried in similar darkness after a tornado destroyed his town. Nature had already sent its message. He needed to commune with rescuers. Technology allowed the slightest movements of his finger to amplify that need to his best friend. His best friend was then able to lead rescue workers to him. So my casting aspersions on new technology has been checked. There are times when nothing else garners the same result. But I don’t think he hugged his smart phone after being pulled from the rubble. Sometimes only direct contact with another human being tells us we are still alive. Brenda Alexander is a freelance writer and resident of Noblesville. How the Hamilton County Metropolitan Child Exploitation Task Force stands between your kids and online predators By Jordan Fischer Current in Noblesville
What Can You Do To Minimize The Chances Of An On-line Exploiter Victimizing Your Child?
T
he face of child explotation may not have changed in the last two decades, but the advent of the Internet certainly has given predators a new level of access to their prey. That’s why the Hamilton County Metropolitan Child Exploitation Task Force was formed in 2007. The team is composed of detectives from the Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville police departments, as well as members of the Hamilton County Prosecutors Office.
• Communicate, and talk to your child about sexual victimization and potential on-line danger. • Spend time with your children on-line. Have them teach you about their favorite on-line destinations. • Keep the computer in a common room in the house, not in your child’s bedroom. • Utilize parental controls provided by your service provider and/or blocking software. • Always maintain access to your child’s on-line account and randomly check his/her e-mail. Be up front with your child about your access and reasons why.
The primary mission of the task force, according to FPD Cpt. Andy Dietz, is to identify, investigate, and prosecute those individuals who utilize computers, digital media and other electronic devices to prey on children for the purpose of sexual gratification or profit. Donning the mask
In order to find child predators and purveyors of child pornography, detectives pose as underage boys and girls in online chat rooms. At that point, according to FPD Sgt. Dave Kimm, they wait for the predators to come to them. “Oftentimes guys will go into a chat room like ‘Dads and Daughters,’ and in the course of the conversation they will divulge information on a link to where this sort of (pornographic) content is available,” Kimm said. Getting access to the larger, password protected sites, however, can be a more difficult process. “The guys that really hoard the mass amounts of child porn are hard to get to, just like drug kingpins,” Kimm said, “because the trust level has to be so high.”
Signs your child might be at risk online: • Your child spends large amounts of time online, especially at night. • Your child receives phone calls from men you don’t know, or is making calls, sometimes long distance, to numbers you don’t recognize. • Your child receives mail, gifts, or packages from someone you don’t know. • Your child turns the computer monitor off or quickly changes the screen on the monitor when you come into the room. • Your child becomes withdrawn from the family.

How aware are you of what your child is doing online? In March of 2010, the task force arrested Samuel Hasler, 50, an Anderson, attorney, on charges of two counts of distributing child pornography, and one count of possessing child pornography. Through the investigation, it was determined that viewing child pornography had grown to become his main pastime. “They determined that he was spending a minimum of six hours a day looking at or trading child pornography,” Kimm said. And, Kimm said, Hasler was not an unusual case for the task force. “We’ve had more clergymen than anyone,” Kimm said, “but we’ve had police officers, attorneys, truck drivers, ex-military men… really all walks of life.” Still, Kimm said, there is a typical profile for child predators. “I don’t think we’ve ever arrested someone who wasn’t a white male, usually 30 or older,” Kimm said. “In fact, usually over 50.” Closing the net
Some investigations with particularly guarded predators can take weeks, Kimm said. Others are willing to meet up with detectives posing as underage children after only 30 minutes of conversation. “Sometimes we’ve only been talking to the guy for 30 minutes beforehand, and the guy was local and agreed to come up immediately,” Kimm said. The task force arrested a man in just such an scenario on April 11, after Greenwood resident Satnam Singh Thind allegedly

agreed to meet a detective posing as a 14-year-old girl for sex in Fishers. In 2008, the task force arrested a Carmel man, Andrew McGrath, on 24 counts of sexual exploitation of children, or producing child pornography, after an investigation determined he had produced images of minor females engaged in sexually explicit conduct. McGrath received 370 years in federal prison. “When I was a kid,” Kimm said, “if you were a pedophile, you would drive around and find a kid you liked, talk them for a while, learn their habits, then eventually abduct them. Now, you can just sit in the safety of your own home and browse to your heart’s content.” “The Internet is a pedophile’s dream,” he added. Keeping your children safe
“The hardest thing in Hamilton County is getting people aware of these types of crimes,” Kimm said. Beyond that, both Kimm and Dietz stressed that parental awareness is key. “Just for parents to be aware of what their kids are doing is huge,” Kimm said. “Oftentimes we get cell phones with hundreds of naked pictures of the owner of that cell phone. And once you send that picture out, it’s like a bullet. You never know where it’s going to go.” The task force offers an outreach program to public schools, churches, and any group that can muster an audience of at least 15 people to raise awareness about child predators. “The thing people don’t realize is, once those children are victimized, they’re victimized for life,” Kimm said. “They can never get the image of that abuse out of their head.” Information about registered sex offenders in your area is available online at www.icrimewatch.net. To report a suspected child sex crime, dial 911 to reach your local emergency operator, the Fishers Police Department anonymous tip line at 317-595-3305, or contact The Indiana Department of Child Services through its toll-free hotline at 1-800-800-5556.

Twenty-two percent of adults in the study who claimed they suffered from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder tried to skew test results to make their symptoms look worse, according to a new report based on the medical records of 268 patients and published in the journal The Clinical Neuropsychologist. Some actually had ADHD but embellished their reports to ensure they got diagnosed. Others didn’t have the disorder at all but were having a tough time dealing with their workloads and lives. -www.msnbc.com

DVDs By Chris Lloyd While it’s not a film for everyone, “Biutiful” has rich rewards for those who appreciate sad foreign films with elliptical storylines. I admit I’m not usually a fan of these types of movies, but this moving drama from writer/ director Alejandro González Iñárritu (“Babel,” “21 Grams”) stars Javier Bardem in an Oscarnominated performance as a man caught between worlds. It’s a heartbreaking film that is a joy to watch. Bardem plays Uxbal, a conflicted man working the back alleys and sweatshops of Barcelona. He tries to find jobs and homes for illegal immigrants from Asia and Africa. Uxbal genuinely cares about these people, but he makes sure to get his cut of the action. Meanwhile, he’s faced with the certainty
that his terminal-stage cancer will soon claim his life, and he struggles to secure a future for his two children in the face of his ex-wife’s erratic mental state. One of the immigrants, a woman named Ige, comes to live with his family after her own is torn apart despite Uxbal’s interventions. The only element that doesn’t really fit into this strange but wonderful mix is Uxbal’s supernatural ability to speak with dead spirits. It’s the one piece of this sad, sweet gumbo that doesn’t fit. Shortly after that declaration, Brahms heard Beethoven’s Ninth for the first time and came away from it ready to write the next great symphony. But Brahms struggled and that symphony took decades to finish. Brahms instead completed his First Piano Concerto, which shows the influence of Beethoven’s Ninth.

The truth behind ‘Lifestyle Lifts’ COMMENTARY By Barry Epply The development of a droopy neck and saggy jowls is loved by few...and is the bane of many women and some older men. Much can be found that promises to improve it from creams, exercises, laser and light therapies, and even the occasional clothespin approach. While surgery is the only effective option for that loose neck and jowl skin, everyone would like to have as little surgery as possible and avoid hearing that dreaded word...facelift. While the fears surrounding a facelift are largely unfounded, people would certainly like to avoid that consideration if possible. This facelift phobia has led to the emergence of the concept of the branded selling of facelift surgery. The most well-known current example is that of the Lifestyle Lift. Through their national magazine and television ads, this is a franchise approach to getting a facelift…or some version of it. Interestingly, nowhere in their advertising does the company suggest it is actual surgery. Somehow the concepts of surgery and lifestyle are incongruous. I have seen numerous patients who have visited their facilities and were surprised to learn that it was actually an operation that requires some recovery and a temporary change in their lifestyle. In reality, the Lifestyle Lift is an
operation that is decades old and is practiced by most plastic surgeons. This ‘mini-facelift’ operation has now cloned many spinoffs including the Quicklift, Swiftlift and Weekend Lift to name just a few. Often touted as being innovative and original by the advertising surgeon, the names suggest that getting a fresh, younger look is really easy...or at least is quick for the surgeon to do. Like many things that are heavily marketed, the Lifestyle Lift has its share of proponents and critics. An internet search will quickly bare that out. As an operation, however, limited types of facelifts do have a valuable role in facial rejuvenation. Not every patient needs or wants a fuller or more complete type of facelift. Facelifting is not, nor should be, an operation that is performed the same on everyone. ‘Mini-facelifts’ are best reserved for patients with earlier signs of aging, not advanced problems such as turkey necks. A catchy name does not necessarily make the procedure novel or unique. Many plastic surgeons offer similar type facelift procedures that just don’t have a branded name, but that doesn’t make them any less effective or useful. Dr. Eppley is an Indianapolis boardcertified plastic surgeon. Comments can be sent to info@ eppleyplasticsurgery. com
It’s never too late for ‘clean’ eating FITNESS By April Conard It is the end of May, and you are kicking yourself for the healthy eating plan you did not begin. Never fear! It‘s not too late to start, and with all this rain, it looks like it will be a while until you will be poolside anyway. Have you ever heard the term eating “clean”? Clean eating is not a diet; it’s a lifestyle. The commitment to this way of eating is full time. It’s not about denying yourself or going hungry. It is about eating with thought and planning. There is one simple rule. Jillian Michaels from the Biggest Loser said it best: “If it doesn’t come from the earth, and if it doesn’t have a mother, don’t eat it.” (Vegetarians, disregard last part) Not to say that all fruit, vegetables and meat are created equal. Try to go organic whenever possible. I know it can be pricey, but I believe you are worth it, don’t you? If you must pick and choose, buy organic when you consume the skin or outer layer. When grocery shopping, think outside of the box; this means shop only in the outer part of the store, where the food is not processed. The most important feature of clean eating is what it isn’t. Clean eating is not a diet you follow for a few agonizing months,
denying yourself certain foods. Have you ever wondered why fad diets worked while you were on them? It’s simple mathematics really. If you usually eat proteins, and fats and carbohydrates (as you should), and you remove one of those food groups, you’ll lose weight, but only while you’re on the plan. Once you reintroduce these banished foods … BAM! You gain weight all over again, and usually a great deal more. With all the fresh fruits and vegetables at your disposal right now, it has never been a better time to start. Support local famers by shopping at the farmers market on Saturday mornings. Make it a family affair and go to one of the “you pick” farms and learn together the importance of eating fresh and clean. Don’t be surprised at how “clean” your body feels after a few weeks of cutting out the junk! Your energy will soar, pounds will be shed, and your taste buds will learn once again how REAL food tastes!

Maserati Spyder and Coupe COMMENTARY By Shawn Miller Well I have finally caved, the editors have wanted me to feature a basically used car for months now and I keep dragging cars out of the 80’s to highlight. That’s probably because we really can’t gauge how a car will age and which ones will be collectible shortly after they are produced-it usually takes some time for them to “mature” so to speak. But this one is a no-brainer. As soon as these came out I was anxiously waiting for the day when they would fall into the $20,000 range, and here we are. That’s right boys, you can now buy a world class Ferrariengined sports car with all the modern bells and whistles for the price of a Camry. The Spyder was first unveiled to the public at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show with the Coupé following at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show. Sales in the U.S. began in 2002. The Spyder heralded Maserati’s return to the North American market after an 11 year hiatus, and was selected by Forbes as the Best GT for 2001. Both were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, who also designed the Maserati Ghibli. Both models utilize the shared platform based Ferrari/ Maserati 4244cc engine (luckily chain driven) which develops 390 horsepower at 7000 RPM. The manual transmission is a six-speed with foot
operated clutch or Cambiocorsa (Italian, meaning “race change”), an electrohydraulic manual transmission that uses an F1-type gearbox with shift paddles behind the steering wheel. More of a Gentleman’s touring car than its Cavalino’ed brethren, these cars are quite comfortable, if not plush. The interior is beautifully finished in keeping with Maserati tradition. While the exterior is a tad benign, it doesn’t attract as much attention from law enforcement, always a plus in an exotic car. Prices will remain stable and move north as time progresses. You could literally drive this car for years and sell it for the same thing you paid for it - a “free car” if you will. Current in Noblesville The mystery shrouding Google’s development of the driverless car slipped a bit earlier this month. Google, it was reported, is quietly lobbying the state of Nevada for legislation that would make it the first state where cars could be legally operated on public roads without someone’s hand on the steering wheel. Does Google (GOOG) plan to extend its digital mastery into the automotive industry as a supplier, partner, or original equipment manufacturer? Could Google Motors become the next GM? It’s more likely than you’d think. By investigating driverless cars, Google is exploring an area that has tantalized automotive engineers for decades. Autonomous cars would reduce highway congestion, cut down on accidents, maximize fuel economy, and free up time for drivers to perform other tasks. They are widely believed to be the way of the future. Self-driving cars could be a once-in-a-generation breakthrough. Google’s automated driver system has the potential to become the operating standard for every car in the world -- the Windows of motor vehicles. Why not? Google has the capability, the ambition, and the resources. With $36 billion in cash in the bank at last count, and more piling up every day, it is hard to imagine a better investment -- both for Google and the future of personal transportation. -Fortune

Cost-effective remodel of a 1970s REMODELING By Larry Greene Original kitchen: This home located in the Woodland Springs subdivision on the east side of Carmel was built in 1973. The kitchen had never been remodeled and the current owner was facing the replacement of the original 27-inch-wide range. Since most current models start at 30 inches wide, this got them thinking about a full-fledged kitchen remodel. The homeowner thought, “Let’s change some other things we don’t like while we’re at it.” Favorite features: The existing cabinets were replaced with new maple stock cabinets with a ginger stain and square raised panel full-overlay doors. The homeowner said, “One of your favorite things is the floor to ceiling cabinets. Also, we love the new location of the dishwasher. The dishwasher is now right next to the sink instead of way over in the peninsula. The refrigerator used to open into the desk and now it doesn’t. The remodel just really opened up the kitchen. Although we did not tear down any walls, we have so much more space than before, and the space is being used more efficiently.” The biggest difference: According to the homeowner, the biggest difference now is the new cabinets. “The cabinets are much more up to date. Removing the old peninsula created a more open feel. I love the pull-out drawers in the pantry. The cast iron
Before sink looks much more stylish than the original sink. This kitchen remodel has changed the main floor of our home tremendously!” Flooring changes: The new flooring also was a favorite. “I really love the hardwood floor refinishing. I didn’t like the way the hardwood floors looked before. During the remodel, we decided to keep the hardwood floors and have them refinished instead. They replaced some boards and sanded them all down before refinishing. They just look beautiful now and I love them. You cannot tell the old boards from the new”

If you like piña coladas Warning: Gardening bug DECORATING By Sue Pelley If you love the feel of an island cottage or beach house, you might have a passion for British colonial style. This style descends from the British West Indies, where colonists combined their traditional Victorian furnishings with the surrounding exotic lifestyle. The outcome was a casual elegance of pristine taste. Here are a few tips on how you can achieve this warm, relaxing style in your own home: Walls with a pale, neutral color like sage or butter provide an uncomplicated backdrop for the rich colonial furniture crafted of dark woods. The floors, too, should be simple. Light tile or wood could be the base beneath casual area rugs of rough woven textures or oriental rugs for a more dramatic look. On the windows, wooden blinds are an ideal choice in a tropical environment. They protect furnishings from the sun, while providing the tropical island ambience. If you love tropical patterns, you might try a light scarf valance in an island print. To tie this fabric into the room’s scheme, cover pillows in the same pattern and casually toss them on sofas and chairs. Duck cloth or light canvases are excellent selections in this theme and the bonus here is that they are washable.
www.youarecurrent.com
That brings us to furniture. Picture the dark mahogany furniture against the light neutral background of your floors and walls. A caneseated rocker placed beside a wicker chest, stacked with your reading favorites is a must. Upholstered pieces in natural woven fibers add an air of casual sophistication. Consider an oversized ottoman as an informal coffee table. Refreshments can be served on trays crafted from bamboo. In accessorizing, look to nature. Brass pineapples not only add a tropical flavor, but they also symbolize hospitality. Prints of swaying palms and lush ferns, framed in gold leaf, are magnificent in an island paradise. Add a few potted plants or permanent botanicals and you’ve included another dimension of living beauty to your environment. Take a few pointers from the British colonials, who found a way to combine the rich elegance of traditional style with the airiness of the tropics. GARDENING By Holly Lindzy (I dedicate this column in memory of my aunt, my soulmate, who touched my life like no other. I would always give her a plant for her birthday on June 8 … I miss that. So instead I grow her garden plants in my own garden.) You know, gardening is contagious. I caught it from my aunt and have since spread it to other unsuspecting persons. It started with my mom, who always liked flowers, but never knew the joy of keeping a garden. Now she gushes over billowy blue hydrangeas when we shop together at the nursery. She’s a goner. It doesn’t stop there. My sister is nuts over blanket flower, my dad takes pity on trees with mountains of mulch at their base and my daughter gasps in horror over topped trees. It’s really getting out of control. Maybe you, or someone you love, are dealing with this same situation. Often times, people suffering from the “gardening bug” display such symptoms as compulsively weeding at other people’s houses, hazardous veering onto the shoulder while gawking at magnolias and overwhelming anxiety during the month

of February. Victims of G.B. will obsessively pawn divisions off on neighbors, insist on driving past “the house with the roses” or drag you to a plant sale half way across town. Those afflicted greatly appreciate gifts of mulch on their birthday. If you are a carrier, spread the love! Divide houseplants and give them to co-workers, share daylilies with your next-door neighbors and babble nonsensically about the everimproving selection of annuals at your favorite nursery. Your enthusiasm is bound to spread to at least one person in your circle. But beware – you may lose one if you overwhelm them. We can only hope that someday, G.B. will reach epidemic proportions. Until that time, we must continue on, weeding where we’re not supposed to, pinching back petunias at the strip mall and heckling tree-topping crews. It’s never too late to do your part. Pass it on. What is your love language? RELATIONSHIPS By Kristen Boice Have you ever felt unloved by your partner? Perhaps you are simply speaking two different love languages. There are several great relationship books. One I find extremely helpful when working with couple’s is “The Five Love Languages” by Dr. Gary Chapman. According to Chapman, the way we feel loved is different for everyone. This is how you feel the most loved and how our love tanks are filled. We have a primary and a secondary love language. He broke it down into five following basic love languages: Acts of service: These are doing something for your partner like emptying the dishwasher, doing laundry, cleaning the house, etc. Physical touch: This can be expressing your love by holding hands, a back rub or a touch on the arm. The type of touch varies based on the individual. Words of affirmation: This is when you notice and communicate something you like or appreciation about your partner. For instance, if you notice that your partner vacuumed the living room, you might say, “Thank you so much for taking the time to vacuum the living room. I really appreciate it.” Gifts: This is achieved by giving your mate a “special something.” It can be as simple as a rose out of the garden, or a card from your local card shop. This is an “act of love” to your mate
by taking the time to pick up and find the right gift, which shows to your mate your love. Quality time: Some people feel loved by spending time together, whether they are walking, talking, eating or working out in the yard. It’s about being together without distractions like the television, computer or cell phone. In order to understand your own love language, ask yourself these questions: 1. How do I give and express love? 2. What do I complain about the most? 3. What do I ask for most often? Speaking in your partner’s love language probably won’t be natural for you or how you feel loved. Typically, we tend to give our own love language. For example, if your love language is physical touch, you will offer a lot of affection. However, that may not be your partner’s. Once couples figure out their primary love language, I have seen relationships transform. It seems so simple, yet it can be extremely powerful. Once you become aware of your love language and your partner’s, begin to “speak” their language, and see what happens. Check in with your partner and ask, “What can I do to help fill up your love tank?” Kristen Boice is an individual, couples and family counselor and speaker with Pathways to Healing Counseling & Education. No Internet? No problem GENEAOLOGY By Darla Kinney Scoles Admittedly, most of my genealogy work is done online. It saves time, gas, and did I mention, time? So, a recent blog post caught my attention. The question of what to do genealogy-wise when the Internet or computer itself is not working was the topic there – garnering a wide variety of responses. Some responders recommended heading to the local library or courthouse. Visiting cemeteries and reading a genealogy-oriented book were suggested as well. By a large margin, however, the most popular responses suggested organizing files. Those of you who are far enough along to be nodding your head in agreement with this sentiment have learned what I am quickly realizing. Genealogy requires organization. Yes, much of what we research can be done online and saved there as well, but some things will always (at least for now) be paper. When you start out researching, things seem fairly well controlled and easy to maintain. Get a few generations back, however, and soon you can find yourself buried in papers with no real system for sorting it all out.
18 | May 31, 2011
The FamilySearch guide says it best. “Genealogy is fun when you can find things, but it can be frustrating when you can’t. Therefore, you need a simple system for organizing, so that you can readily find things again when you need them.” It’s easy to move forward for a while simply gathering, but to be successful in truly utilizing all that you have gathered, you need an organizational system that is simple to set up and maintain, is flexible, inexpensive and most of all – safe and understandable for future generations. As ironic as it may seem, a great place to find information on setting up such a system is the Internet. But, should that fail you, there are many books, magazine articles and free library classes to help you out as well. So now you have work whether connected to the World Wide Web – or not. Darla Kinney Scoles is a freelance journalist living in Noblesville. Her most recent work involves the creation of “Stories”, an individualized writing service helping people get their personal histories down on paper. Contact her at darlakinneyscoles@gmail.com.

Riding in cars with dogs COMMENTARY By John Mikesell It is that time of the year, and things are finally beginning to heat up. We must be ever vigilant about our pets (and kids too) and leaving them in the car when the outside temperatures are over 65 degrees. There are also many factors to allowing your dog to ride in the car with you. Consider all the canine passenger safeguards, and select the one that will best suit your dog and your circumstances. Train your dog to behave in the car like you train him to do anything: by setting him up for success, and reinforcing him for the desired calm behavior. Be on the lookout for dogs at risk of heat stroke in cars on warm days. Don’t hesitate to call animal protection authorities or the police department if you see a dog suffering fro the heat. A dog sitting on the driver’s lap can interfere with steering. A dog that gets on or under the accelerator or brake pedals, hits the gear shift, or blocks the driver’s view can cause an accident. When the driver’s attention is taken away from the road to deal with the dog’s behavior, the dog has become a safety hazard. A loose dog can become a flying missile if the car stops abruptly or is hit by another car. If the car windows break or the doors pop open in an accident, a loose dog can escape, get hit on the road, or run off and become lost. An unsecured dog can interfere with the efforts of rescue workers in an emergency. A dog with its head out the window can suffer injury to its eyes from flying debris, or worse, can have its head smashed by objects that pass too close to the car (other vehicle Mirrors, signs,

Things are getting a bit squirrely at my house HUMOR By Mike Redmond When we were kids, my brother and sister and I had a pet squirrel named “Filbert.” Well, “pet” is a bit of an overstatement. He lived in the tree behind our house and came to the back door to get the nuts we left for him. Anyway, I haven’t buddied up to Sciurus niger since Filbert, and this year is no exception. Once again, I find myself at odds with the neighborhood squirrels over a long-standing dispute over who REALLY owns the bird feeder. First, you should understand this is strictly between me and the squirrels. The birds have long since been cut out of the deal. Second, you should understand that anyone who says he has a squirrel-proof bird feeder is a lying sack of sunflower seeds. But back to the feeder. Over the years, I have bought every squirrel-proof bird feeder on the market, and over the years the squirrels have gotten fat at my expense. Out of necessity, I have even taken to “improving” the feeders. For example, I bought a feeder that had a locking door on the top of the bin and a feeder bar that would close the trough if touched by anything heavier than a chickadee. It took one day for the squirrels to figure out how to get seed without touching the bar, two
20 | May 31, 2011
to open the top. I wrapped the lid down tight with not one, not two, but three bungee cords. Two days later the squirrels were bungee jumping off the top of the garage. I bought six feet of stainless steel chain, wrapped it around the bird feeder and secured it with a combination padlock. Three hours later, I went out on the deck with a cup of tea and saw a squirrel twirling the knob with a look of intense concentration on his face and a tiny stethoscope in his ears. Hallucination or not, that’s when I decided to just give up. The squirrels weren’t too happy about it, but they haven’t lost any weight, so I don’t think they’re suffering. Which, in a way, gets me back to Filbert. Oh, he didn’t suffer. But when Dad got cute and tried to hand feed him, Filbert bit him right on the index finger. He had to get stitches and a shot. He suffered. It was anything but a positive interaction. And I think that’s why he never said no when I asked to go squirrel hunting. Mike Redmond is an author, journalist, humorist and speaker. And as the only healthcare system in Indiana to be recognized both nationally and as the top-rated system in metro Indy, you also get the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’ll receive exceptional care when you need it most.
